Double card slots is a must as there's no going back and redoing stuff. It's amazing how the A7IV remains a firm choice despite so many cameras coming out after it.

Your videos are comfort food for a gear head like myself. Super appreciate the content. We use the Sony a7 iv full time on our secondary stage. Experienced overheating on it for the first time recently. But it was shooting nonstop for an absurd amount of time. I don't think that it's good enough for casual work either. They come so close to perfection with all these cameras but somehow, they purposefully choose to mess it up. Overheating is the biggest flaw of this camera. They could've added a fan but they didn't. -_-

My a7iv is the first camera that feels like an extension of my body (get your mind out of the gutter). Selling my a7c for the ZV. I doubt overheating will be an issue as there’s no logic in shooting 4k 120 for more than 30 seconds….unless you want to be the first filmmaker that makes a feature film that’s 90 minutes of slow motion. You should do that actually, lol. We’d all watch it.

I think the A74 the easy choice to someone who does both video and photography. Sensor alone warrants. The new Sony is definitely more for beginner creators (albeit expensive, but much less than so than say FX3 and above) needing a video focused tool, with some great features for non pro video use. I quite like it for what it is. The review by DP review is one of the best…but you have to watch it before April 10th! Another great video Mark…you are a powerhouse of video production! My suggestion: a video using little Dougie vs ZVE1 Suspect the video quality almost exactly the same at a fraction of the price..maybe not in really low light, and suspect some of the new tools on the EV1 May be cool, but overall video quality the same (on social media platforms at least). Update: also thought CameraLabs review was great as well!

Thank You!!! Very clear and concise comparison that pretty much answered my questions and concerns.
I am REALLY starting to hate SONY, why do they pull this crap?!? The ZV is ALMOST worth buying over the a7iv, but not?
Sony is doing what all of the big brands do to us, offer a new camera that's slightly better in some specs, but lacking in other specs and features - but within their own brand?!
I have been ready to buy a new body ($2-3k range)/lens/accessories since 2018, but this holding back crap has kept my money in my wallet -
which I think says A LOT about the state of the mid-range market. It's like,

a lot of it is limitations of software, trade-offs between features, price, and portability- targeting different users, etc. I don’t think Sony is actively trying to hold back features, but not everything can be included in every camera for a myriad of reasons. After watching this video, I went for Sony α7 IV as it has video capability and also photo capability. It took me a single day to make a decision and went straight for it. Mark, as usual, you are right on target. Presenting the facts, looking at the pros and cons for what you are looking at and being realistic with expectations. I have a Sony A7IV as my main camera and I shoot some photos and videos (no professionally, just for myself). I have been thinking about another camera, primarily to focus on a bit more on video. Have considered the Sony ZV-E10 but APS-C, smaller battery, etc. ---- could be okay inside in the office studio, but I don't know that I would like it for travel. Then I saw the FX30, and thought that could be it, with picking up a few APS-C lenses (the only lens I have for A7IV is 24mm f1.4 GM with the 50mm f1.4 GM on order). Now this is released and full frame, all lenses I have and will get will work, but $2200???? I am an educational discount person so can get another Sony A7IV for $2248 or a Sony A7C (same size as the Sony ZV-E1) for $1618. For a second camera, though I would like "lighter" for travel, I don't know that I would get value over another Sony A7IV?!?!?!

For me, the ZV-E1. I've had the A7iv. And it is a fantastic camera. But, the ZV-E1 has the same sensor as the FX3 and A7Siii. Which means the low light capability of the ZV-E1 surpasses the A7iv. Plus, the 12MP sensor of the ZV-E1 also has better rolling shutter. And the creative features of the ZV-E1 with the faux anamorphic framing and color presets can be fun.
The single card slot isn't a big deal. I think the card quality itself is more important. I've never had issues with SanDisk Extreme, Sony Tough or ProGrade cards. Avoid Lexar is what I've always heard. Yes, the smaller HDMI port can be a hassle. But, you can get HDMI mounts that attach to most cages, which can help secure the cable.
In the end, I think the price and the 12MP sensor and the other features do it for me.

Mark, I was just thinking. Sony is one firmware away from destroying the camera market. Can you imagine a FX6 with Dynamic Stabilizastion? it's the same sensor after all. Leading in autofocus, leading in lens availability, leading in Stabilization.. crazy thought

The should add everything they can - although people using the fx6 are probably using their own stabilization methods - this digital stab still has those little jitters and artifacts, especially if you don't up your shutter speed

Sony should have just either released an update for the A7SIII, FX3, A1 or perhaps but for some unknown reason, their engineers and marketing department thought that it would be a great idea to release a weird ZV camera. I might be wrong so lets see how this goes

So, E1 is smaller and have all that I need (or want) so it may be a alternative? Never used a ZV line before so I don’t know, really like the FX3 and FX30s form factor. What do you guys think in the comments? 😊

I already have the A7IV, and was tempted to sell it and get an A7RV, but after using it a bit decided my A7iv is pretty perfect. But I do want a second body for video, and I’m torn between getting a used fx3 for around $3k or getting a zve1 and an fx30. I have a lot of g master glass, i want that full frame 12mp sensor to put my glass to proper use. I’m mosty concerned with the zve1 over heating issues. I’d have an fx30 for long form video situations, like filming a podcast or various events I get into, like I unexpectedly filmed comics doing stand up at a club from a last minute call I got 3 weeks ago.

As a FX30 user I am glad the ZV-EV1 exists but it does not appeal to me because. 1) lens prices 2) XLR inputs/4 audio inputs 3) Full size HDMI 4) Dual Cards ( Slot 1: small expensive card for high frame rate aprox 1 Hour ; slot 2: 8hours of HD). It would be nice to have the dynamic stabe but, as Mark mentions you always use catalyst browse. 5) Riggin the FX30 is so much fun and addicting. These are my 2 cents

Better screens doesn't mean crappy batter life. Yes it will use up more but not terrible. A7R series are not known for crappy batter life. Also to note, camera LCDs are way worse, even considered jurassic compared to modern day smartphones, which have excellent screens, which will be beneficial to composing/reviewing photos.
