You can donit safer by using plates larger than the length of your arm. So you don't smack them at the bottom. If you get the size right, it's like benching without the need for a spotter. Much safer.
just assembled my own flat floor bench press (using car support columns max 2 tons, 37 cm max height) plus a bar with 80kg total weights ;) Also nice to see the Bulgarian flag in the video ;)
Just a personal anecdote. I used this for two pretty long training blocks because I moved abroad and had to wait a while to get a bench. So no bench or much space available at the time. I made rapid enough progress on it, but when I did get a bench and started benching again I found that my benching was actually somewhat reduced. I'd become accustomed to the different range of motion. Now I know you say bench is somewhat more of an arm strength exercise, and I'd say floor press had a good effect on my triceps strength, but when benching I immediately felt the need to employ chest and shoulders in everything up to the 2/3 point. So it doubtless helped with lockout strength, but seemed to have little to no effect for the first part of a benching movement.
@@WenningStrength Maybe, maybe not. Off the chest part of BP is a matter of chest/shoulder (back) for raw lifting. I like floor press and I still do it (have used it for 30 years), but I find it's better for upper mid-range problems and lockout issues. I'm not saying anyone is wrong, just noting what happened for me.
Gotta rep the best in the game, also we shoot a few videos in one sessions so that's why the shirt stays the same every few videos when we don't have other options.

One other huge benefit not mentioned, and the main reason why I use the floor press, is to strengthen the actual pressing movement. Your legs need to be straight on the floor. This prevents you from using the legs as leverage and teaches you to focus strictly on pushing through your back and tri’s. Doing this was a huge improvement on my bench. I’ll do my set-up as if I’m on a bench: kness up, dig my scaps and traps in the floor, unrack then put my legs out. The eccentric & concentric is strictly relying on your back & arms, and delts to an extent.
Some people say that one of the benefits of exercises like this and the box squat is that they "break up the concentric and eccentric chains." What does this mean?
I don’t know why but I feel a bone in my back digging into the floor which is very uncomfortable when doing this don’t get that doing bench press though I think it’s because the unrack gets me out of position
drive.google.com/a/ualberta.ca/file/d/143SB6xfj20Buwdv548YSwrE52JESCAbp/view?usp=drivesdk See if that link works; that is what my floor press setup with bands looks like.
so i get tight shoulders from bench press even tho i bench correctly. can this be lack of muscle mass? like my arms have to travel way back my body to touch my chest if so then i have to use boards right?
@@kodiknott7418 yeah thats what i meant with benching correctly. i have monkey arms (while relaxed they almost touch my kness) so i think maybe im moving my elbows too far away
Doubt muscle mass will make a big difference. I have put on nearly 90 lbs body weight since I started lifting and it maybe took 1/2 inch from my bench ROM. When I was as having shoulder issues I only did decline bench. That helps with the ROM. Also dumbbells are good. Only reason you need to be married to traditional bb bench is if you compete.
William Hendrix it can still be used effectively. You can switch your grips around so it doesn’t touch your chest but the added difficult of the pause and lack of leg drive would still be there
Rob Alder cool, it seems to work well for starting strength for me, also takes some strain off the hips if they are taking a beating from constant arching, etc
Matt - I LOVE your stuff...but RIGHT before I watched this I watched some vids of you at Westside doing Floor Press...and it looked like you were bouncing it off the floor...definitely no pausing..which is exact opposite of what you are teaching here.....so would you say that your approach to it has changed to incorporate the pause...and if so...why?
The floor press saved my shoulders and rotators when they are jacked up and needs rest.

Floor pressing today. Love Matt’s videos!

Great exercise, the use and the narrow grip are all things I do on this exercise. I agree with everything here.

What do you do if youve got no floor?
Go Israel! Hey Matt, when I do these the bar touches my chest. Is this still a useful excercise if this is happening?

I get the theory behind floor presses but when I do them for some strange reason the bar is almost on my chest. That's why I never do them.

How do you set up bands for the floor press?
Hang them from above! Invert the effects of the bands to change the motor pattern and environment the muscle is in.
I’ll show on another video
To add resistance? Get some of the Rogue mini bands; perfect for the floor press and also good for deadlifts as well.
