- CNN's Nadia Romero speaks to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis about the timing of the evacuation orders in Lee County, as officials are facing mounting questions about why the first mandatory evacuations weren't ordered until a day before Hurricane Ian's landfall. #CNN #News
The response to this hurricane was the best I've seen in my lifetime. I live in North Port FL
As a Floridian who lives in Alva right outside of Fort Myers we got hit HARD but man did DeSantis do a AMAZING job prepping for this Hurricane and also he has been working non stop around the clock giving Instagram updates and more. He is a amazing governor do NOT listen to liars who plays politics and talks smack about DeSantis he has been a GIFT to Florida. Also this CNN reporter tried SOOOOOO hard to trip him up but he handled it flawlessly! THANK YOU DESANTIS! GOT MY POWER ON FASTER THEN WHEN IRMA HIT!
As a Floridian who’s been through many hurricanes Ron desantis did a great job with his prep and reaction. I even thought he called a state of emergency too early but after it hit I realized it was a great decision. It’s sad to see them politicize a natural disaster and try to attack his decisions when he did a great job. Real people were affected and they just think about the polls.
I wholeheartedly agree! I, too, live in Florida and thought Ron DeSantis did an excellent job!!
Comment by Carmencita: He did what he was supposed to do, an excellent job.
That's CNN
He did the same with Covid!!!!
@@andreaobrien6408 and he would have gotten nowhere had FEMA not been called in as early as it was. Joe Biden stated several days before the hurricane was to hit Florida that all the resources of the federal government were going to be available to the state of florida.
The fact that only 74 people are dead shows you that these guys did as good a job as you can expect.
This was no Katrina.
It would have been a lot fewer if people would have heeded evacuation orders or, at least, realized that they live on an island.
Never thought I'd see Ron DeSantis talk to a CNN reporter lol.
Practicing not ripping someone’s head off. But, seething with animosity, eh!?
He has to pop his head out of MAGA safe spaces once in a while
Everyone should give to charity occasionally
If he would lay off the culture wars he wouldn’t be that bad honestly
He wouldn’t be if he wasn’t running for president in 2024.
How dare he campaign for no federal aid relief for New York and other states, but beg for it now!
And a GoFundMe too
Probably will misuse the money 🤑
Amazingly dumb argument on your part.
Leftist trait of coarse.
Senator Rand Paul pulled the same sh-t.
Maybe because it wasn't about the federal relief for those states, but all the extra crap that couldn't pass on it's own merit that was attached to those relief bills... Oh, but you libtards have forgotten about THAT part haven't you?
@Товарищ Андрей ☭ Go luck with that 😇😇😇😇
Why is it that when they do actual reporting, they then instantly spend more time commenting and telling you their opinion about their own reporting than just letting the audience use their brain?
Well yeah...CNN has been doing that to Republican politicians for decades
It’s not the government’s fault to tell people to evacuate.
Use your own judgment, and stop trying to lay blame for your problems.
Only one question need be asked. Why did he seek to deny aid to New York, but beg for it for Florida?
Because it was “financially irresponsible”, which I take to mean it helped Blue States.
He's a total hypocrite!
He didn't have to beg. The funds are federal funds. Don't be petty.
This
Yet he wanted to deny aid for NY lol
Please interview all the people who complained they didn’t get notice….I really want to hear their story.
It was all over the news so as far as I’m concerned they don’t watch tv or listen to the radio. Their fault for being blasé about a hurricane barreling your way. 🙄
There weren’t any, no one to interview.
I’m just trying to understand why one would need to wait until the government tells them to evacuate. If I see a hurricane coming my way and I lived on the beach somehow, I’m not waiting for anyone to tell me to evacuate. I’m outta there!
Cnn lying as usual. Probably 1 critic who had some kind of mental problem to not know enough to LEAVE after watching news!!!
@@dimi3391 because its a lot more complicated than that. Hurricanes change direction all the time. So evacuation orders must be precise and decisive not just there is one but the new possible paths it will take and what the local government has setup for an effective evacuation plan. People's frustration is that some were later than others which means people can't evacuate without causing traffic problems and even more loss of life.
Now THAT is a govenor.

Did the reporters from CNN ever have questions like this for Governor Kathleen Blanco after hurricane Katrina?
We want Florida to get the federal aid they need but we also remember that Florida votes for people who would deny that same aid to other states going through similar catastrophes.
Don't blame all of Florida for the gerrymandering Republicans have done over the last couple decades to make sure its a red atate

@@grannyqute2273 Unfortunately, it won't. They are what they are and that is horrible people who lack empathy for anybody else.
They will still vote against any type of aid for Americans. They want that money in THEIR pockets, not ours.
The same aid? People from Sandy got the same aid as people from hurricane Ian.
Sandy happened in 2012 and the bill (HR 41) that he voted against happened in 2013. The bill was to provide extra funds for flood insurance and was use for people who didn’t have flood insurance. That bill also included other things such as money for a fishery disaster in Alaska (which I don’t think had anything to do with Sandy, but I could be completely wrong).
Same applies here…if you have flood insurance, then you should be good to go. If you don’t, I don’t believe the government should bail you out considering the option is there and you failed to properly insure your assets.
So as far as I’m aware, people of Sandy and Ian have received the same type of assistance (thus far). Is there something that I’m missing?
Ron DeSatan... the level of ignorance is atrocious
Did anyone else catch the part about house insurance? “I’ve been willing to fix it but the legislature is NOT, but I’m sure they will be AFTER THE ELECTION” no the hell they won’t, if they wanted to fix it, it would’ve been done NOW
Big Business will always have the ears of GOP politicians and the ppl that keep supporting him, got exactly what they deserved!! I just hate that my damn insurance is gonna go up because of this crap.
Helping people is not what he is about, his political career is. Maybe he could have charted a few more private jets and flown some of the residents to Martha's vineyard.
I wonder if someone will ask him if he wishes he to save some of those Millions he just got done using trying to make the lives of immigrant families difficult looks like they could have used a couple of those million dollars now
Go I weather underground to hurricanes and tropical cyclones and look at the forecast and order evacuations of every possible impact zone this was plotted 24 hours prior to it hitting. I
Two things, 1 if you live on the coast and you don't understand the flood risk maybe you should move to he mountains and I doubt flood insurance is in anyway affordable.

Hurricanes are unpredictable. You can never tell "exactly" where they are going to land.
Born and raised in Florida. Lived in Sarasota/Charlotte counties for 40 years. Been through every storm since 1983. Stayed through them all. Every Floridian knows the score. We don't need to be told that we should leave. We know staying is a gamble. It's like smoking, nobody is ignorant to the risks.
The reason people stay is because 49 times out of 50, nothing happens. It costs money to leave for a few days. If you have kids and pets, leaving for two or three days could cost over a grand by the time you pay for gas, food, lodging, etc.
Again, when it's going to cost you $1,000 that you may not have and then 49 times out of 50, the storm shifts, veers away, weakens, etc., a lot of people roll the dice and take the calculated risk.
Even as someone who has always stayed, you know you are playing with fire and it's only a matter of time before you get burned.
Very well explained. Anything in life is about taking a calculated risk. Sometimes you have to have faith, that the people calculated correctly. That being said, If I lived in Florida, I would take advantage of being close to the water, knowing that it is a risk.
Life is more important than worrying about a few bucks to evacuate. Now your family will be left with the expensive burden of your poor misguided decisions or you put first responders at risk to save you because Eureka! you finally agree the experts were right about the dangers of the storm. That's the problem you freedumb thinkers. It's extremely selfish and inconsiderate.
and there were so many who had no help with evacuations. Maybe that shithead should have spent the money he's used on cheap political stunts with asylum seekers to evacuate and house the most vulnerable.
Rob you're spot on... I've been in Palm Beach County 38 years and also know the routine very well.. A lot of folks who don't live here really do not understand this.. They also don't understand while it is our Governor who declares a state of emergency -- -he does not order mandatory evacuations... This is done on the County level..
Also true, just because an evacuation is mandatory, large numbers of people choose not to leave, and police cannot knock down every door and physically drag people to shelters.. Along with the reasons you mentioned, a number of people refuse to leave because they are afraid to abandon their property or business.. When I was younger, we stayed for the thrill of it and had roaring Hurricane parties as we rode the weather out.
There's also been many occasions where folks in my area evacuated to Northern parts of the State because of a Hurricane's path predicted it would hit us, only to have the storm miss us and hit the area they drove up to..
Finally a good comment here.

As a genuinely independent Florida voter, I'm happy with his response. Yes, if you knew exactly when and how a hurricane would hit, you could do things perfectly. Then you have the issue of evacuations jamming up the roads.( the last place you want to be stuck during a hurricane... in your car traveling at 5 mph)
Leave it to the Democrat Party’s Mefia Apparatchiks to dance on people’s graves from a Cat4 Hurricane by blaming Guv DeSantis for the “failed” evacuation… but the Guv ain’t no dummy, as he points out the FEMA predicted that landfall would be in the North, closer to Tampa Florida - where the entire media stationed all their assets - so IF the Washington Compost now teases that there are “growing questions” we must assume that the Media had up-to-the-minute MORE accurate forecasting and - deliberately - withheld that information to score - deadly - political points 🤔
*Governor of Lies,Spin, Marketing, REPEAT*
And of course you would've done a way better job . And what exactly did he lie about ?
Yep. Only the panhandle made plans to potentially evacuate. He didn't say a peep when the hurricane changed directions. Most people didn't realize it was coming their way until hours before Ian made landfall.
This is the best example of DeSatans's toxic narcissism. So full of himself and his Ego, he wanted to avoid criticism by telling Floridians that he got it wrong, and it wasn't heading north, but took a hard right. Then he waits until the last minute to announce it and that people should leave, when winds were already clocking over 60mph with a downpour. Smh...

@@williamtell5365 I’m not going to get shitty like the other people, but independents are the fastest growing political demographic in the country. While there may be more registered democrats than there are republicans, this has been the trend for a while. What is important to both parties is what those in the middle think. Currently? Polling puts independents as right leaning over left in a 2:1 ratio. The Biden administration has not done well for the democrat reputation and even during COVID, people started polling away from democrats who would enact legislation they themselves wouldn’t follow. It’s not exclusive to the left or right, but there has been a lot of attention drawn to the left’s transgressions lately. That’s why midterms are looking like they’re going to swing red. Our son (who moved to FL for work after his job was lost during the pandemic) went to bed in Orlando after the tornado watch ended and woke up unexpectedly in water. Within hours when safe the neighborhood was being evacuated by first responders in rubber rafts. Thank you.
Stop with the blame game. People had plenty of time to evacuate and chose not to. It is ludicrous to assert that the order should have been issued on Sunday, days before a storm, forecast, at that time, to be 60 miles offshore as it passed Lee County.

Pretty much. Unless you want to take them to court.
Insurance companies won't be insuring homes in hurricane prone areas much longer, unless home owners intend to pay a ridiculous amount in HOI. They'll be charging $5000/year soon for a 1600sqft home, and not many can afford that. For those who are filing claims in Florida, most probably will receive half of what their home is worth.
