I love when your mom is with you , she’s so funny ! The way you encourage her but respectfully and kindly is why I enjoy your decluttering videos more than most . Some others are so cold and demeaning concerning others belongings . They hold a lifetime of memories for some . You and your mom have a lovely relationship! 🥰👏 So great to see !
When I gathered all our photos (not including those in albums) I had a stack of boxes that was over 5’ tall - crazy! I came up with a plan: 1) get rid of all duplicates, 2) select a specific number to remember each trip/vacation/event (i.e. 5, 10, 20) and toss all the others 3) get rid of all pictures with people/friends that your children wouldn’t know or care about, 4) keep a small amount (must fit in a small album or box) you might want to keep for personal reasons/memories that can be tossed when you die. 5) Label and date pictures kept. Get rid of those you can’t label and/or date. Even though I have a plan, I haven’t decluttered them. I need to get busy! 😅
Photos are the worst! It took me a week, and I threw out several full trash bags worth! Save the best (in an album), toss the rest. And label them. Ten years from now, my kids won't remember what any of these are! I admire your stamina in this difficult job!
My grandmother lived to 89. Everytime I visited her she would want to buy a new photo book. After her funeral, my aunt invited the family to my grandma's house. She opened the closet and there were all the photo books. They were labeled with each person's name. The book contained the family history pages with everyone and then personal photos relevant to just the person of the book. My aunt explained all the hours grandma had spent. It was such a special parting gift. She had 8 children and 32 grandchildren. She also had a closet full of her beautiful handmade quilts with labels of each family member. She always said that she didn't want any arguments after she was gone.
As always, when these two get together, I grinned all the way through. Last year I went through all my photo's so I know how tough and yet easy it is. I came to a stage where I asked myself, "How many photo's of the Nile do I need, to remind myself that a sailed down the Nile?" The answer was, "Just one. Not half an album's worth."
This helped me so much when I was decluttering photos; I realized I never got the photo albums out and looked at them. I also realized that looking at old photos made me sad. I went through my boxes with a vengeance I only have a small amount of photos left. I still don’t even look at those! 😆
Hi Sherry, you mentioning that looking at photos makes you sad is something I can related to. I think most people think saving all the photos equals saving the memories, but sometimes photos do make us sad and why would we want to look through and feel that. This is why it's so hard to go through photos.
I get sad looking at old photos too. I have three big bins of family photos from throughout my life and I'm 72 now. Where does one start sorting through them? They are all mixed up in bins-no organization except for a few albums. Can you give me advice?
I have a good storage tip for all those water bottles (gleaned from another decluttering channel) - go to the Dollar Store and get some magazine racks, then you can "file" them vertically and it takes up less space (that and decluttering extra water bottles - you only need 1 per person, or if you live alone you may keep two max!)
This was so interesting and ‘funny’. I helped my Mom declutter photos starting during our second CoVid lockdown…it took us an entire year though not working on it every day. It was 80 years worth plus 3 previous generations worth and so many of her trips. She did so well and we got rid of so many photos. She also compiled 1 ‘life album’ where she took only the absolute most precious and iconic photos and put them all in one album. It would also be easy so if there was a fire she could just grab one album and it would be ok if all others were lost.
Love your Mum. She has been willing to embrace a new way of thinking about her stuff. Not many older people will even consider that a younger person may have a better idea. I am a similar age as your Mum & I love having a more simplified home, it makes everything so much easier to deal with.
Your mom is a treasure!🪙 Thanks for sharing your mom with us! My mom passed from cancer over three years ago. I inherited her home & moved in during Covid. Unfortunately, I still have her clothes in my now bedroom drawers. I feel like I'm getting closer to finally getting her clothes donated to a local churches "free closet." I'm still saving family photos to declutter later.
“You have a photo of a cloud. You do!” LOL! So true! I helped my parents go through their photos and kept only photos with people in them. Quality over quantity!!
I recently tried to put all our photos in one place . After 53 years of marriage, 2 kids and now grandkids it was a huge project. Tubs were everywhere. I got rid of duplicates and tried to put in broad categories. Then I find more boxes. I’ll start again next month.
I relate so much to both of you. I’m at your mom’s stage of life and these motivate me to follow her lead and get rid of stuff! But I’m also helping my mother declutter and Shannon, you inspire me with how you work with your mom! Thank you both!!
Hi Jill, we try to laugh through everything and I always think if you don't declutter it now then probably on the next round it will be easier to let the item go.
Mom did well! The first round of decluttering is the obvious. The second is the reality. The third is fine tuning. After that it is maintenance. Well done, you two!!
In 50 yrs of housekeeping I decluttered one crockpot at about 25 yrs. Then bought another at 35 yrs which was decluttered at 40 yrs. Whew, took me that long to realize I could just use my dutch oven in my regular oven!!! Easy to convert any crockpot recipe.
I have that same Tupperware cake holder. I still use mine when I store Christmas cookies. I used to use it a lot more, I would not get rid of mine at my present stage of life.
I just moved my photos from albums to photo boxes a few months ago. I was so happy to see those old heavy albums go! My only problem is I can not yet throw away any photos that have my kiddos in them...no matter how bad the pboto! But I still went from a large moving box full of albums to 4 photo boxes and another small box for the larger size photos. 🙂
I know exactly what you are saying! It feels like I’m discarding my kids’ childhoods if I throw out any pictures of them. I was impressed with how well Shannon’s mom did paring down her photos.
Hi Cowgirl here, your Mother is a beautiful woman 💕 It's a job for sure,. You both have really motivated me to want to get busy doing this in our Retirement Ranch. You two make me laugh so hard, fun times and great memories.
Been married over 45 years and the pictures!!!!!! This will be my next big declutter. Sharing the extra with family members is less of a blow when sifting through. You 2 work so well together!
I recently did my first pass through all of my photo albums. I was someone who kept all pictures, even if they weren’t clear. 🤷♀️ I gave a lot to my sisters and nieces. I think I’m ready to do a second pass now are reorganize. Love seeing your Mom in videos with the cute interactions!
OMG, you guys motivate me and crack me up with your interactions. Your mom is so fun, comical, and I admire her for being willing to declutter. Wish more families did that, would make it easier on their grown kids.
This was meant for me, I was trying to wrap my head around how to declutter the photo albums😅Now I hv motivation, wish my daughter also joined me just like u two, would be easier & fun.
Thank you so much for the inspiration and the laughs. Photos are a great challenge, especially for us of an age before digital. Empty nester here. I have a very large bin with photos from my childhood, my husband's childhood, and photos of my kids. I always meant to put them in photobooks, but now of an age I just don't have the energy, A couple of summers ago, I went through them slowly at first and separated photos for each adult child. I purchased photo boxes (acid free) and placed their photos in their box. Reorganized and had more space, still haven't completed the job but its not a huge mountain anymore.
Cake container: use as cake holder, (cakes of all sizes,) carrying things to other peoples houses, salad / fruit salad bowl, marinating large things, large doggie water bowl, storing small toys eg Legos, bowl for all fruit when you have lots of grandkids or friends over, soaking clothes in bleach overnight. Lots of other uses. So keep especially if lid closes securely. Also can store little used items inside like extra napkins, small mixer, etc ( Christmas silverware, napkins, decor, strings of lights) IF you find you are having to unpack those things too frequently then take them out OR if only once a year, then you really DON'T need the cake dish so then donate. You can often buy such things at the dollar store or thrift store.
Your Mom is so lucky to have you to help her let go stuff. I find it gets easier every time I go through things - like your Mom you realize you still haven't used things since the last declutter. I scrapbooked for many years so am currently scanning ALL my albums so I can get rid of them and just have digital copies - which I'm making into videos. I now do photobooks for new photos (and I take a lot) because I love to look at them in that format.
Awful thing to say but I wish my in laws would do a Swedish death clean. They have sooo much stuff the house fills me with anxiety. Also, my partner is a hoarder. Anything they give us he takes and keeps. Would be worse if they pass away. He's already wasted loads of money 💵 on storage for years before we moved. It's so refreshing for both parties. My mum couldn't bring herself to throw anything before she passed (as she knew she was sadly dying). I'm pleased I never said anything as I preferred to spend quality time with her and not decluttering. It took us all a long time to declutter house after as we all are sentimental. Bless her x
Waow I'm so impressed how your mother downsizes the photos from those albums!! I am so stuck in that area but at least have taken my childhood photos out of albums and put them in boxes. I threw away maybe 2500 photos already but it takes so much energy. Haha that cutting the boyfriend out was funny. 😆
I just love your mom. We could be sisters. I have so many pictures and it will probably be the last thing I declutter. You said your mom is organized because you didn't know she had that many pictures, I've always said I was an organized hoarder.
I love watching you and your Mom declutter. I also had my parents and my 100 page photo albums. I scanned the pics I really wanted and put them on my computer and an external hard drive. What I’m excited about is that I also put those pics on 2 USB drives that holds my 13,000 pics. The USB drives, takes up no space at all. Also I put one USB drive with the pics in my safety deposit box at the bank. So that my kids can have them one day. Thanks for your videos, I learn so much from you.
It gets easier as you go. I have a holding area now. Example Crockpot and cake container…put in holding area. If needed within X timeframe, good. If not used, within X timeframe gone.
Great timing I'm off to my daughters tomorrow to declutter and reorganise her kitchen, last week we did her bedroom , 5 black bags decluttered, some rehomed, some rubbish, her kitchen is my favourite place to declutter and reorganise, my kids love my visits as I'm ruthless, as they say mam says if not used it in last 30 minutes it can go haha x
I love seeing your mom!!! Seriously, I'm taking mental note about making "temporary additions" to the family, stand on the outside of group photos lol!!!
I used to love taking pictures on all of my foreign trips and my work abroad what I did is I chose 50 pictures that best defined that trip as if I was putting together a photographic book.
Hi Shannon. Greetings from the uk. I went through my photos during lockdown and decluttered I would say about 10.000 and loads of albums which were taking up so much space. It did take me a few weeks and I felt exhausted by the time I had finished. Most were duplicates when we would always take a few just just in case they didn’t turn out right. Some were of someone looking away from the camera or had their eyes closed. Out of those photos I just kept the best. Strangely enough I decided at the weekend that I was going to go through them again to reduce them even more. I can’t see future generations looking through mountains of photos. I bought a photo box which has separate compartments which you can label. They don’t have to be in order which is really good because you can add photos as and when you find them to that particular category. l find with photo albums if you find a photo later on, you need to move all the photos just to put them in order. I throughly enjoyed your video today as I always do and always even more when you are with your mother. My very best wishes to you as always. Pamela.
Wow Pamela it sounds like you have done a lot of work and I agree I don't see future generations going through thousands of photos. Thank you for sharing your motivating story!
There should be a service that scans your photos for you. I have taken my iphone and took pictures of some really old photos to keep forever on the cloud.
You two are hilarious! Thanks for keeping it "really real". You make it fun & love how you show us that it is a process over years. And yes, never ever (ever) tackle the photos first on your decluttering journey. It will leave you exhausted and swearing off decluttering forever! Do some easier, smaller areas first with quick results that will motivate you to keep going. 🤩😍
WOW!!! Boy did I need to see this photo declutter. At the beginning of COVID I began to he photo decluttering. Unfortunately I started with a tremendously sentimental box….fast forward 3 years…..NO PROGRESS. So today may be the day! Thank you.
I LOVE the videos with your mom! My sweet mama and I had a relationship like that. She was truly my best friend. She was killed in September 2021, but seeing you two makes me smile thinking of the wonderful laughs we had together. ❤
I did the Swedish Death Cleaning. Momentos from all years past that were of interest to me; I let go of. My kids would not want concert ticket stubs from the 60's. I reduced the photo volumne by getting rid of all the large albums and putting photos into shoe box size photo boxes I got at Ikea. Always fun to watch you and your Mom working on a project.
I've a lot nice antique bowls etc but I don't have the time to sell them individually on eBay so I'm looking to donate to a place that they make their money also from running their own auctions on eBay that way they can get the optimum price for the goods but I've also been able to donate them to where they cause. Makes passing things on a lot easier. While I am about three years away from downsizing I really want everything ready as much as possible so that I have the least stress.
De-cluttering/getting rid of pots and pans not a promble but pictures can be really hard. Ive been getting rid of things right and left now i need the truck to come take it to the mission store, i even have som Furniture pieces that will go when they come that is why i need a truck. It is really hard to let go of some things that were my moms come next month she will have been with Jesus 3 years im not ready to let go yet. Now her china im thinking about letting it go except for 4 of each thing familys are so much smaller now and so many familys rather go out to eat then eat at home and just be together. Great job mom you rock!!👏 i would keep the crockpot 😊 God bless you and your familys
😂😂😂OMG my mother in law had my sister in laws boyfriend AIRBRUSHED out of our family wedding picture!!!!! They had to recreate her arm in the photo!!😂😂
Awwww this is the hard part. It took me about a week to go through 33 photo albums....my parents have been gone for many years now, so I have theirs as well. My kids are all grown, so I sat and did this by myself...so hard, but so needed. Mentally draining, but a relief. I told my boys, after we are gone, they can do whatever they want. I combined and got rid of so much. Thanks for sharing; you encourage us.
It really is mentally draining with the photos! Because there are so many memories that are brought up and as someone else commented that it can be sad. Seeing fun moments with people that are gone... anyways it is definitely the hard part.
I know decluttering and keeping less is important but look at how much you two laughed and had a good time together reminiscing. Photos are important. Make digital photo books so you can go back and enjoy these pictures again in the future and share them with your kids some day.
That was so funny thanks so much for the laugh this morning the part about cutting off the boyfriend and having them stand at the side so you could still keep the good people made me litteraly laugh out loud! And great job with the decluttering you both did great! From a subscriber in Canada first time commentator
That technique did not work for my sister’s wedding photos - the bride and groom usually go in the middle. It would have been strange having the family photo with the groom on the far end. Honestly we did have one family photo without the groom. Save!
Do you know I never considered letting any photos go!!!! Wow this was some deep exhausting sorting... 😳 Kitchen cupboards and photos on the same day 😳 You went in hard.... great job 👍🏻Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉
Oh geez! You two had me laughing out loud. So just this week I went thru my ‘85 thru ‘91 photos so this hit home. But what had me laughing is Shannon, you being ‘exhausted.’ Oh so real! However, darn. You’re saving a handful, getting rid of an armful. Me: I’m saving the armful, got rid of a handful. 😖
I love it so much when your mom joins you in videos! I have a wonderful close relationship with my mom and we have so much fun together and I can see that in your videos with your mom too. My mom is such a blessing and I know you feel the same about yours! Bless you both! ❤❤
Photos are the toughest! I worked on mine for just 15 minutes a day since decision fatigue would set in. I made multiple passes, and it was like peeling an onion. With each pass, I tossed more. I found that the best storage for me was a three ring binder that made it easy to move photos.
Love the videos of you and your mom.🥰 its so important to go through photos- nowadays, we have SO many. Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance before my dad and mom passed, and I have no idea who the people are, where the photos were taken, and why it was important. Now I'm going through my photos so my kids won't have that problem. (Anyone else have 50 pictures from cub camp excursions - and none of your own child? And why are there so many bad pictures of the scenery rather than a few good ones of the people we went with? 😆)
👏👏👏👍💞 I Luv when U guys do videos together! U 2 r the sweetest most fun Mother n Daughter team! U guys Always bring great Joy 2 my Heart! ❤️ Blessing 2 Both of U! 😘😘

Thanks so much Laurie!
Agree 💯
Yep 🤗💟
awesome! Your mom is a rock star... just keeps plugging away and getting to each and every corner a little bit at a time!
Hey there, yes we are just working on one space at a time over and over. I am always surprised with how much we end up giving away.
I really like that plan! It makes it a lot easier when you do have a plan because then it will be less overwhelming. You are on your way =)
Photos are the worst! It took me a week, and I threw out several full trash bags worth! Save the best (in an album), toss the rest. And label them. Ten years from now, my kids won't remember what any of these are! I admire your stamina in this difficult job!

Love that!
Yes! I have been to 22 countries and am saving about 5 from each.
Yup, I’m grinning too!
My in-laws had boxes and boxes of scenery photos from their travels.
@@labradorite8256 and most likely you just want photos on them in front of the scenery!
This helped me so much when I was decluttering photos; I realized I never got the photo albums out and looked at them. I also realized that looking at old photos made me sad. I went through my boxes with a vengeance I only have a small amount of photos left. I still don’t even look at those! 😆

Sort them by years and pick a set number for each year.
Sentimental stuff is overwhelming, indeed, but small steps get us to our main purpose: simplifying our life. 😊
That’s it. I’m getting rid of my crockpotS. Yes. Two that are never used. Thank you!
Getting to the photos means you have gotten close to the end of a very long process. Congratulations!
Love the relationship between you and your mom! So fun to watch.
I love when you are with your Mom...She is so fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great ideas, my mom actually has those extra ones for when my boys come and stay with her =)
Love this video! You are a great team. I laughed so hard at the photo tip to put the boyfriend/girlfriend on the end of a group photo.
Thank you so much!!
My parents had photos in shoe boxes and several photo albums...Took a while to declutter and put it in chronological order but so worth it in the end.

Thanks, I will.keep that in mind as I declutter mine.
"a blurry turtle -- a blurtle!" 😂love it! greaat video + well done!!!
Thank you! 😁

I plan to buy a scanner and scan all the keepsake photos. The pricier ones can scan faster.
This is a timely video. I am currently going through the photos!
OMG, you guys motivate me and crack me up with your interactions. Your mom is so fun, comical, and I admire her for being willing to declutter. Wish more families did that, would make it easier on their grown kids.

That rack is very important to keep. I have one, and use it --all the time---to convection bake in my microwave

wow, when you face photos, you are brave! those who have only digital will never have to do that.
I really love that idea, I think the minimal mom talks about this too. =)
Haha 😂 you sound like me - a ruthless declutterer. Love it!
I love seeing your mom!!! Seriously, I'm taking mental note about making "temporary additions" to the family, stand on the outside of group photos lol!!!
Love your Mom!!! Jeff Gordon… you go girl!!
I used to love taking pictures on all of my foreign trips and my work abroad what I did is I chose 50 pictures that best defined that trip as if I was putting together a photographic book.
The boyfriends on the photos 😂😂😂 Your mom is so funny! 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Kathy is always a nice surprise! Great co-star ☺️⭐💖
There should be a service that scans your photos for you. I have taken my iphone and took pictures of some really old photos to keep forever on the cloud.
Fantastic job congratulations photos sometimes hard
Don't know what video gram is help lol
You two are hilarious! Thanks for keeping it "really real". You make it fun & love how you show us that it is a process over years. And yes, never ever (ever) tackle the photos first on your decluttering journey. It will leave you exhausted and swearing off decluttering forever! Do some easier, smaller areas first with quick results that will motivate you to keep going. 🤩😍
Being able to declutter with someone who is practical AND can laugh is such a wonderful experience.
Yes! Life is about having fun =)
WOW!!!
Boy did I need to see this photo declutter. At the beginning of COVID I began to he photo decluttering. Unfortunately I started with a tremendously sentimental box….fast forward 3 years…..NO PROGRESS. So today may be the day! Thank you.
Hi Beth! I am so happy to hear that you are going to start trying again. Decluttering can be really hard sometimes.
It's hilarious how you pep talk your mom. You both make me laugh. 🙂
Hi Janet, this day was a little more difficult to let go of some things and she ended up keeping the cake holder lol.
@@shannontorrens1 progress not perfection 😅
I LOVE the videos with your mom! My sweet mama and I had a relationship like that. She was truly my best friend. She was killed in September 2021, but seeing you two makes me smile thinking of the wonderful laughs we had together. ❤
Yea, it's you and your mom again 🥰🥰🥰.
Your mom is a gem! I love it! I love her comment about having the boyfriend on the end so he can be cut out of the photos! This was so awesome!
Your mom has a lot of stuff! I’m glad she keeps on making progress!
Your mom is so precious ❤
I did the Swedish Death Cleaning. Momentos from all years past that were of interest to me; I let go of. My kids would not want concert ticket stubs from the 60's. I reduced the photo volumne by getting rid of all the large albums and putting photos into shoe box size photo boxes I got at Ikea. Always fun to watch you and your Mom working on a project.
Hi Jan, the albums do add so much bulk! I hope you are doing well.
Your mom is so much fun. Love your videos with her.
I love watching you two declutter together . It's the best!
Watching you and your mom makes me smile and laugh so much. You guys are so funny and adorable. Thank you for sharing!
It’s fun watching you two work together. Reminds me of me and my Mom a long, long time ago. You’re inspiring me to go through my stuff yet again.
"Decluttering IS painful..." - Kathy. 🤣❤️
Love your video. I laughed so much. Your mom is so cute. Loved the photo section!
You two together 🥰🥰🥰🥰🇨🇦
Shannon I just LOVE your Mum ! ❤
I just love your mom 🤩
You two are brillant together!
Inspirational!!! Go Forth And Conquer...now where did I put my copy of Swedish Death Cleaning🤔?
😂😂😂OMG my mother in law had my sister in laws boyfriend AIRBRUSHED out of our family wedding picture!!!!! They had to recreate her arm in the photo!!😂😂
haha that is so funny!
Omg! My husband has trouble parting with pictures. Baby steps 😂
I know decluttering and keeping less is important but look at how much you two laughed and had a good time together reminiscing. Photos are important. Make digital photo books so you can go back and enjoy these pictures again in the future and share them with your kids some day.
Love, love, love it when you and your Mom are working together! So much fun. 💕💕💕
That was so funny thanks so much for the laugh this morning the part about cutting off the boyfriend and having them stand at the side so you could still keep the good people made me litteraly laugh out loud! And great job with the decluttering you both did great! From a subscriber in Canada first time commentator
Thank you Chrisula, happy to have you here.
Kitchen cupboards and photos on the same day 😳
You went in hard.... great job 👍🏻Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉
You have inspired me from Australia 🇦🇺
I love it so much when your mom joins you in videos! I have a wonderful close relationship with my mom and we have so much fun together and I can see that in your videos with your mom too. My mom is such a blessing and I know you feel the same about yours! Bless you both! ❤❤
That was great fun to watch.😀 I am impressed how many photos you sorted out. It makes me wonder about my own...🤔🙄
You are tonic for the day
You all make decluttering fun! You make me feel normal!
Photos are the toughest! I worked on mine for just 15 minutes a day since decision fatigue would set in. I made multiple passes, and it was like peeling an onion. With each pass, I tossed more. I found that the best storage for me was a three ring binder that made it easy to move photos.
Wow, I am so proud of your mom-- she did an amazing job of decluttering. She is so funny!
That is great you are going through your photos while you can =) I am trying to keep up with my photos too because it's so easy to have them pile up.
Love you two! So relatable and fun, as the kids say, you are mother daughter goals.💕
I wish I had someone to help me declutter like this! You guys are having so much fun too!
👏👏👏👍💞
I Luv when U guys do videos together! U 2 r the sweetest most fun Mother n Daughter team! U guys Always bring great Joy 2 my Heart! ❤️
