      Shannon,
My family is Scandinavian as well (Norwegians) and Swedes. I've never heard the tradition nor title but it's fascinating.
I was just thinking: wouldn't it be fun to take it to the next level and once you go thru what you don't want to have a family gathering where they could have what they want as a remembrance of that person, then donate what's left or not needed
Just a thought from a person who didn't get a thing from my husband's belongings when he suddenly passed after my sister in law discarded everything as she didn't like the memories. Then told everyone after the fact.

Is Swedish death cleaning the book that you would suggest someone listen to first? Or would there be a different book that would be good to start out with. I’ve been following Dawn for years but I’m just not in the mindset yet. But I need to get there really quick I’m not getting any younger.

I am Swedish. And I would like to suggest we rename this Swedish life cleaning. I do this not to help my children after my death but to improve my quality of life right now. It does serve both purposes ;-)

Hi Laura, I agree the title is very scary sounding. But I get the process and the reasoning behind it. =)

    • @judylloyd7901
      @judylloyd7901 2 года назад

Well, if you do it to improve your quality of life right now, it's known as decluttering, or divesting.
I do it to improve my quality of life right now, but also to spare my daughters from the burden of it after I die.
I started doing this before I knew that Swedish death cleaning was a "thing," but when I first heard of it, I knew pretty much immediately what the idea was.
I don't have a problem with calling it death cleaning. When you think about the idea that you start at about 65 years of age, it's understandable that it's linked with making life easier for the loved ones you leave behind.
Hope you enjoy clutter free living.
      😊😊👍👍

I’m nearly 70, and love the Swedish death cleaning, it’s my go to job for rainy days. I had a small bag of old gold jewellery from my Grandmother , Mother and Auntie. Non of it was my style, but obviously sentimental, I took it to a jeweller who bought the gold from me and I had a platinum diamond ring made which I love. My house is so much easier to look after too. Great video ladies. Xxx

Our local elementary school takes jewelry donations (any kind) and before Mother's Day they put it all out on tables and let the little kids come in and pick a piece for their moms as a gift on Mother's Day. It was the sweetest idea in the world. I'm just putting it out there that maybe some readers will have such programs in their local schools.

My sister died suddenly in 2012 and I had to go through all her things and decide what to do with it all. It made me realise that things don't matter at all and I started going through my things and got rid of more than half my stuff. I learned about Swedish Death Cleaning a few years later and realised that is what I had already been doing. My mum died last year and I am still going through her things. She didn't like to get rid of things as much as I did, so I feel guilty for not wanting to keep everything she had. I need to get over that, but it is hard. I love your mum, she is so lovely. Great video. Hugs from Australia

Omg..similar here..10 boxes of china and silver...I have calculated it goes back5 generations..and it's been in boxes for last two.
Also photos...going back to late 1800s...it is such a debilitating chore...but am not going to leave for others to deal with. Will sort organise and keep some and get rid of lots .

@@rosalynne8792 Please don't throw out old photos! Digitize them first, scan or take good high res pics of them first. As someone who does some family Ancestry genealogy, old photos are rare and precious, they add so much. Sadly, they get tossed because no one labels them with names, and two generations later, no one knows who they are. Use an acid free, photo-safe pen. If you must get rid of them, first ask the extended family if anyone is doing genealogy, or donate to a local historical society.

@@micheleolson9914 yes..."why did noone label them with names"? is a question I frequently ask myself! Sigh. Fortunately, I do know a lot of them...so I will do that..and yes thnx for the tip on type of pen to use. Actually, the ones I throw away will be mostly the ones from the 70s/80s that are mine.. when we took several similar ..in case someone blinked. My nephews seem to have no interest in anything older than themselves. My son is slightly more interested. However, I do intend to organise, label etc My dad bought a "box brownie" in the 30s.. pics in album...but no labels..I know a lot of who's who though. The huge framed ones are more difficult to "store" ..about a dozen of those. I actually have most on stairwell wall..mixed with more recent ones. It is a (huge)work in progress. Digitise is not a word in my vocabulary..prefer something I can hold and see easily ...in just my lifetime photos have changed so many times... slides ( omg!.. 50s/60s) tiny black/white pics,, movies, videos, dvds. It's only a matter of time and they will change again!!! But, I will organise them...hopefully before I'm gone!!! ..then someone else can digitise( or whatever!?) them.
I am going to reorganise lots into those small containers within a bigger container...photo boxes. Especially the ones from mid 20th century.
      Thanks for the tips!

@@rosalynne8792 The interest in former generations often comes when people get older. Or maybe your nephews' kids or a cousin... might develop that interest. A whole lot of fotos would be an incredible treasure then, especially with names and relations on them. I have just about a dozen fotos and you can't imagine how much I'd love to know who these people are. And who knows, perhaps you yourself find that interesting one day, once you stumbeled over an interesting story of an ancestor, die example. I got back as far as the 11th century in one branch of my family. I found professions and stories... so much to discover! It's addicting 🤷‍♀️

I ended up clearing out a house I had sold. As a Realtor one never knows what you’re doing next! It was early 1990’s. The house was stuffed with stuff. In a drawer was a letter from 1954 from the ladies cousin complaining about having to clean out their aunts house (who apparently wasn’t well liked). In the letter she said I hope we never leave this kind of mess for anyone else to clear out when we die! It was an eerie, Twilight Zone moment, lol. But it stuck with me to not hang on to unnecessary stuff. The lady apparently kept buying aluminum foil. I had enough foil it lasted until 2005!! 😳

Denise T, it is ok to keep your mom's things, they have her essence. Use broaches on scarves, hats, on pillows as decorations and on lamp shades to remember her. I place a broach on the outside of my wallet, it was my mom's favorite. If you decide to give them to your children, they can be turned into earrings or charms for chains. What best gift than something from grandma with an inscription from her. God bless.

When I'm doing the Swedish Death Cleaning for my only child, instead of feeling sad &/or making her feel obligated to keep something, I put all the things I no longer want or use in a plastic tub. When she comes over, she can go through my "discards" without feeling like she is hurting my feelings if she doesn't want them! We can talk about some of the items of why she MIGHT want to keep them but NO pressure!! I've already released them but she's welcome to browse through them without having to burden herself! Just because we're in the thrift store, doesn't mean we need to burden our life with more junk!

(But we actually are swedish and live in Sweden). I took a small bag of items that I really like home with me, things that my mother no longer wanted to use. What a joy for both of us that she passed those things on to me while she is still alive (and kickin'!) so that she can see me enjoying her things. I inherited my mom's buttons as well as my two grandmas' and my great aunt's. There are some beautiful, precious ones among them, many of real motherpearl, which is very expensive nowadays.
Whenever I wear a garment I love with "unworthy" buttons, I replace them with my beautiful ones. Now is the time to enjoy them!

You are SO lucky. My little sister, who was an organized hoarder died and my mom took a lot of her stuff, and when I moved my Mom close to where I live to drive her places(she has macular degeneration), I tried to introduce her to minimalism so that her move would be lighter(I moved her along with my husband). Now, whenever I visit her, all I can think about is how much stuff I am going to have to go through after she passes, if she dies before me. She has SO much stuff , loves to shop and I feel overwhelmed. I am a minimalist and when I die, my son will be able to get rid of my things in about an hour.

This was a fabulous video. I'm 69 years old so a little older than your mom and I can relate to this subject/book about Death Cleaning. I haven't read all of it but it's really fantastic. I am going through this myself. I have nothing to leave anyone so I am now getting rid of a tremendous amount of things for one thing I'm sick of cleaning it and around it, but, I'm slowly getting rid of things that were sentimental as well. This is a good thing to do. It's not that I plan on kicking the bucket any time soon, lol, but, it feels wonderful, cleaner, and you don't have to be concerned that people will have to go through the piles of items in your home after your gone. So, I think no matter what age this is a good thing to consider for one's own happiness and others.

Kate hi Kate I am also 69 and house is full of clutter. I don't keep well low energy problems so I've hired 2 sisters to do it for me. I lost my 45 yr old daughter 😢 in April 13th 2020. It was ester Sunday and out of the blue. I have been through a weird time with not being able to concentrate to do stuff. My grand kids have helped in past but I am a hoarder and go out buying stuff and dumping when I get in. I know I must get some kind of high from it but I realise when it's time for me to depart it wouldn't be fair to leave the work to my grankids. Plus it's helping me mentally to get it done. So far my bedroom has been done which I had to move out of and go to spare room and its now cluttered. I don't spend much cash on myself so this is a wee treat for me and (grankids). Girls are coming next week to do my kitchen and dinette which is full of clutter.x I am sure u don't have my problems but it does me good to talk. Thank you for reading.xx 😃😍 ps girls are not related, got them from Google and their great. Best wishes from Scotland xx

You will honor your mom by wearing, using, displaying something of hers. What better way to remember her. Also passing things on to grandchildren, like a broach turned into earrings or charm with the inscription" from grandma". Use what you can, get rid of things you do not. God bless.

Everytime an item came into the home, an item has to go out the home....irrevelant of what item it is.If one buys new shoes....be prepared to throw either an old pair or shoes out , or another item.Very soon , one discovers that one does not need to buy anything new....unless one is going to part ways with other much loved clothing items etc.Do the same with kitchen items etc.

I've been decluttering seriously for the past year. Started in 2013. All 3of my son's are grown n families of their own. My first huge purge was when I gathered their stuff since birth n delivered it to each one of them in different states. My words to them was I've kept all this during your growth what you do with them from here is solely your decision.
Bottom line I don't want them to have the burden of going through my estate having to make decisions. They know all they have to do is ask if they want an item now.
Besides I like living with only things I need and use daily. It's so freeing..like a weight has been lifted from mine n their shoulders.

When my Mom passed away my sister and I went thru her jewelry box and sorted out what we wanted to keep. There was a lot of costume jewelry that wasn't our style but at the time I couldn't part with it. I'm glad now I kept it because I have seen where people take bits of jewelry and create artwork with it. I am going to use them to create the first initial of both my siblings last names as well as my own. It will be original artwork using otherwise unwanted pieces. All the more special because it was our Mom's.
Just a thought for those of you who are reticent in donating/selling anything like this. You can also upcycle old tie's into cell phone holders and wristlets to name a few. Or take an old top and turn it into a pillow. Lots of ways to re-invent something you can't bear to get rid of; but make it useful.
