    The Aftermath of colonial era slavery has also left damaging effects on the mental & emotional health of many former enslaved and indentured peoples across the globe. Those families currently whose wealth is tied to slavery and indentured servitude should pay either reparations or compensation for lost wages.

    They were many countries colonised by the British gained independence. But many still adore their colonial master and still using English as their official language. After more than 50 years independence many still believe only the British and English will make their countries successful. Sound weird but it is the reality. They were able to free their countries from physical colonisation but remain colonised mentally.

      Britain was the first to oppose slavery. That was most unusual for the time. Most other societies were more than happy for the practice to continue and in parts of Africa it is still going on.. King of Benin opposed the end of slavery.

      @Black Sparrow Ah, slavery was a small part of it, but it ended up costing loads also. It was more of a burden than a help in my opinion. Read Thomas Sowell books on slavery if you actually want to learn something.

    Becoming a Republic it's a symbolic issue, Barbados was already independent since 1966 and they shared same independence status as Canada, Australia and other crown realms the only difference was their head of state was still Queen Elizabeth II and she was a ceremonial Head, most of the executive powers were under the Barbados government.

      The only difference with Austalia, Canada and Barbados is the ethnic make up of those countries and hence the veiw of the people is different in each one.

      Slavery existed for millennia before the Transatlantic Slave Trade. People of all colours and religions (specifically white Christian’s) have been enslaved. People have always dominated other people for gain. I feel very passionate about my mixed Bajan and European ancestry but I wish people could actually educate themselves on the subject before spouting some virtue signalling ignorance.

      @@8kmkid568 The only difference is they don't come under the protection of the crown. Britain now no longer has a moral obligation to help them if something happens such as a a hurricane, tsunami or they are invaded by an outside force ect.

      @@8kmkid568 No worries. Countries like Australia retain the Queen because it can be useful to them. From their point of veiw it is purley ceremonial. She can't change laws or influence anything they want to do, but if they where invaded or something terrible happened, Britain becomes legally obligated to help.

      @@angelbythewings nope, slavery was a fact of human life in every society on the planet from day one, the British were the ones who abolished it, for moral reasons, black people should be grateful to them rather than bash them, if it had been anyone else, we'd still have slavery. And having been a British colony to this day positively correlates with GDP and the biggest hellholes are Haitis and Liberias of this world that haven't been colonized.

    I still remembers saying that Arabs should be occupied by Turkey and Iran. Because I thought that Turks were nice to Arabs. And I got replies from Arab not in a nice way. But I learned the history of Turks I found it remarkably same as what British did to India.
    Did it mean I hate British?? The answer is no because the thing is they acknowledge their mistakes,their crimes. Though common British still thinks that they helped India by colonizing it.
    That makes them different from Turkey.

      The enslaved individuals didn't benefit, but the british government, which is an institution that still exists, did.
