  • Assassin's Creed? Great games. Awesome storyline. Uncannily accurate about the future of techno-genetics. Little did Ubisoft know when they released the first Assassin's Creed in 2007 that the Animus project adventures of Desmond and Altair would successfully predict the future of scientific research in 2013. So, is it possible to pass memories down between generations as depicted in Assassin's Creed? Watch, dear Theorists, and learn!

    I fell asleep while watching your videos on the "Game Theory: The Complete Series" Playlist and ended up dreaming about you the whole time. You had an existential crisis, went into acting, decided that was meaningless and started Game Theory... somewhere along the line we became pirates.

    The first time watching this video, I kinda expected Matpat to talk about the field of epigenetics rather than this DNA encoding thing. See, there are these things called epigenetic tags where certain proteins can attach to a creature's DNA and can actually use enzymes to alter it, turning it on or off or even adding new information into it based partially on the life experiences of the creature. The evidence of these life experiences, in the form of these epigenetic tags, is then passed on through DNA replication to the offspring of that creature. It doesn't pass on memories as such, but there have been broader stretches on both this channel and in games as a whole.

    To all the people upset with the megabytes to gigabytes calculation, he is actually right. After enough people got confused by the incorrect use of metric prefixes, new ones were devised. MB means megabyte, and is now 1000 KB. 1000MB makes a GB now. The terms you are thinking of are now written as MiB and GiB. MiB stands for Mebibyte, and is 1024KiB. 1024MiB makes a Gibibyte, or GiB. So yes, Matt is correct.

    I feel obligated to be the bubble popper. The conversion ratio for different tiers of bytes 1 to 1024. 1 GB is 1024 MB, so the math goes a bit differently. 6.8 GB -> 6,963.2 MB. 6,963.2 * $12,400 = $86,343,680.00, a significant $2,000,000 difference. For decoding, $220 * 6,963.2 = $1,531,904.00, adding a less significant $31,904.00 assuming the price per MB is accurate. The $87,875,584 total cost is ~$1.8 million more expensive than portrayed. I'm going to assume that you rounded strangely, because despite the discrepancies, I've triple checked my calculations. Other than that, this has been informative and enjoyable! Thank you for your work!

      Watch the next assassin's creed episode uploaded in 2013, the leap of faith episode. You'll see that this has been pointed out to him many times already. You can't possibly think you're the first to notice in 2 years.

    • @Shenzao
      @Shenzao 9 лет назад +3

      cordudemax You're right. I'm not the first to notice in two years. However, I didn't see any numbers crunched by others in this setting. I figured that since the numbers were a point of emphasis in the video, the corrected calculations would be of merit to the audience. Hindsight says there are better ways to approach this in the future. I do appreciate you bringing my attention back to this comment, though.

  • @fakjbf

    Actually, life choices can in fact alter DNA. Not the actual sequence, but how the DNA is wrapped around histones. This is called epigenetics, meaning "above genetics" because it's like a separate layer from the code itself that determines what it says. SciShow has a great video on it, but I'll summarize it. Your DNA is wrapped around proteins called histones, making it more compact. If it's wrapped really tight, that section can't be read by the cell. So how the DNA is arranged can change how it's processed. All through your life, your DNA changes how it's wrapped to increase efficiency. If there's a section that isn't used often, it'll wrap tighter and loosen in an area used more often. When gametes (eggs and sperm) are made, most of this structure is erased, but some parts remain. These small sections are then passed to the child, influencing inheritance. Granted, the effect is no where near on the scale needed to recreate actual memories, but it's still events in your life being passed down the generations.

    • @artisticscience54
      @artisticscience54 10 лет назад +1

      The tightening and loosening of DNA around the histones is mainly due to the frequency of transcription events, as you say, however this applies mainly to differentiated cells which serve a specific purpose (i.e. your heart cells do not need to produce digestive juices, however they DO posses the DNA required to, it's just silenced). Also, the heterochromatin structure does not "disappear" so much as disassemble and reassemble, which means it's very unlikely that events (which specifically effect the gametes) that occur in a single generation can significantly effect the phenotype of the next (not to say it can't, just very unlikely), Also you would have a very hard time correlating the slight differences in gene expression rates directly to changes in chromosomal structure, which would make "decoding" these slight differences into useful data (like a text doc) next to impossible.

    Despite what many think, DNA is not a fixed construct. A few years ago, there was a study on the DNA of a pair of identical twins. When the twins were born, their DNA strands were exactly the same, but when they both grew up and lead different lives, their DNA was tested again. It turned out that their strands were ever so slightly different from each other. This is because the strands of DNA will become destabilized over time as electromagnetic radiation interferes with the membranes of the cells. This background radiation can come from a variety of sources, such as the sun, radio and cell phone signals, and even the electrical activity of the nervous system itself.

    In a recent experiment, some mices were guided to an electric pataform that would give them a litle shock that would scare them away, later those mices would mate and breed and their offsprings (without any prior experience) would refuse to get close to the electric plataform without trully knowing what it did, just by mere instinct

    Now the question becomes this:
    Psychologists don't know where memories are stored in our brain, nor how to get them out, or how they're encoded (think file formats). The fact that you can store word documents into DNA isn't the same as actually storing memories - that's going to take a LOT more research (and probably a few million more dollars).

    What they're doing with DNA encoding is not a strict 1:1 with what the AC games are doing. I mean, it is cool, but it's sort of like saying ancient cultures predicted spaceships when they told of people canoeing to the moon.

    This explains how they are planning to make videos on dead relatives' graves that's supposed to represent your relative to every detail as if you were talking to them in reality. Basically with this, I'm guessing, they are making some sort of video screen on tombstones at graveyards that recognize you and you can interact with the video simulation as if you are really talking to them. Pretty neat actually

    mistake on the costing of the game made into DNA memory, a GB is 1024mb, so it would cost $86,343,680 to encode "Desmonds Memories", you're missing about $2,023,680, it for the reading it would cost $1,531,904 so we add another $31,904 and you are missing $2,055,584 in your calculations or a total of about ~$88,000,000

      A GB (gigabyte) is 1000 MB (megabytes). They are generally used to describe storage device capacity. A GiB (gigibyte) is 1024 MiB (mebibytes). They are generally used to describe ram capacity. These are defined in the international system of units (SI). So he is actually correct in this video. Source: physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/binary.html

      According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology this video and my previous statement are correct.
      They say that:
      10^6 Bytes (B) = 1000 Kilobytes (KB) = 1 Megabyte (MB)
      10^9 Bytes (B) = 1000 Megabytes (MB) = 1 Gigabyte (GB)
      You are confusing Megabytes with Mebibytes where:
      2^20 Bits (B) = 1024 Kibibytes (KiB) = 1 Mebibyte (MiB)
      2^30 Bits (B) = 1024 Mebibytes (MiB) = 1 Gigibyte (GiB)

    Lots of animals abandone thier offspring at birth, those offspring show signs of knowing things they can't possibly know without a teacher, like birds flying or animals knowing which plant is poisonous or how/where to find food. In those cases the only possible explaination is that they already know it when they are born. Most reasonable theory is that the information is in thier genes.

      technically a GB is both, in base ten it's 10^9, in base two it's 2^30. what GB is completely depends on the number system you use and the context of the conversation(not to mention storage drive manufactures tend to use base 10 in their size calculations).

      Malsherz no. 1 GB is EXACTLY 1024mb there is no rounding up or down otherwise, like example in the vid, an xbox game on an 8GB disc would not be 6.8, but rather 7gb or 6gb to round off equal.
      and no, manufactures do not round up or down or use base 10... they thrive on the geniuses to figure they're maths for them and only tell YOU the simple versions ran up or down because ( and no offence ) but people are not all technologically minded and would probs be totally confused by the "big numbers"

      killer13324 The cost of information encoding, DNA or otherwise, is decreasing by a factor of 1024 every 180 months (15 years), so expect this procedure to cost just under $100 in 30 years.

    Hey Matpat, idk if this has been mentioned yet, because I don't wanna scroll all the way down to the bottom of the comments. But I take Latin now in high school and "animus,-ī", but for your sake 'animus', does not translate to memories. There is a different word for that, and it is "memoria, -ae." Animus, -ī will translate to soul, spirit, or mind, which is as close as you will get, but it doesn't mean memories. Love the 3 channels though and great video still

    Too bad Desmond died before he could get the chance to pass on the DNA memories to create little Desmond Jr.

    • @GabrielS94
      @GabrielS94 10 лет назад

      Hmm... wouldn't be so sure. I really don't think Ubisoft is going to bring Desmond back... And the problem with clones is that you can't "clone" memories, it would a new Desmond, unless... unless they advance the Animus usefulness to somehow insert his original memories back to the "new" Desmond.

    • @GabrielS94

      Me neither, I wouldn't be so sure. Ubisoft has turned that page already.

      What would be the point of bringing him back, and how would he be of any help without his memories?
