On Jake Loves Stories, I watch movies for the first time at viewer requests and I give my breakdown during the movie reaction using my screenwriting knowledge that I gained from 8 years of studying screenwriting and earning a Bachelors degree in Film, while also trying to just enjoy the film.

28:00 "You must kill your name before he kills you" He cares more about Maximus' life than about his mission. He's telling him "You've made a name for yourself. Don't do that. Shut your mouth and lay low. The emperor is going to kill you if you don't."

  • @BigGator5

    "Are you not entertained?"
Fun Fact: After Maximus shouts that line in the Zucchabar scene, you can see a crew member in jeans and a white t-shirt in the stands on the extreme left.
Genuinely Merciful Fact: Joaquin Phoenix ad-libbed his "Am I not merciful?" scream. Connie Nielsen wasn't expecting it, and her frightened reaction was genuine.
Home Sweet Home Fact: Maximus' description of his home (specifically, how the kitchen is arranged and smells in the morning and at night) was ad-libbed. It's a description of Russell Crowe's own home in Australia.
Heartbreaking Fact: Oliver Reed died three weeks before principal photography ended. Because Proximo was considered a key character, a clause in the movie's insurance contract would have allowed the filmmakers to re-shoot all of Reed's scenes with another actor at the insurer's expense, about $25 million. However, most of the actors and crew were exhausted from the punishing schedule, and Ridley Scott did not want to cut Reed from the movie. The script was rewritten, and a body double and CGI were used to give Reed's character a plausible resolution.

This is actually much more of a miracle than you realize. The script has been in development for decades, but kept being rewritten over and over. Eventually this film went into production *without* a finished script. In fact, THEY ONLY HAD 21 PAGES and an outline. They basically made up the rest on locations and during reshoots. "It was the dumbest way possible to make a film. We occasionally still get together and laugh about what a bullet we dodged." - Russel Crowe.

Also throw in that Oliver Reed (Proximo) died during filming so they had to scrounge footage from previous scenes and B footage to then insert him into his final scenes in the film. Which is why when the centurions are trying to break into his gladiator training ground and he hands Maximus the keys he looks a bit janky and his final line of "shadows in dust" is B footage from earlier in the movie when Maximus is going up the ramp to fight the un-retired gladiator and Proximo shouts "Shadows in dust" to him, there was extra footage of him then uttering it again to himself as Maximus enters the arena.
Considering this was 1999 they did a phenomenal job to edit that all together and a lot of people don't even realize it happened until someone points it out. (if you search Oliver reed CGI on youtube you can see a video showing the edits).

The actor Oliver Reed, who played the old gladiator trainer Antonius Proximo, died midway during filming. It required some script and filming changes. They used some CGI to complete his scenes.

7:00 i never got from that scene that he could fight. it looks like a bunch of guys holding back letting him think he’s this amazing warrior to placate his ego

I agree with you. If you look at the scene carefully, they’re all carefully choreographed moves, like they’re performing a dance to make him look good. It’s all for show.

They need to make a prequal with Maximus working his way through the ranks.
The ending scene being the starting scene of Gladiator.

Killing a man's name before you kill him. An interesting way of putting it. When dealing with a character like Maximus, you are dealing with something more than a simple man. You are dealing with a living embodiment of an inspiring leader. Killing him in the wrong way or att the wrong time would be devastating to the reputation of whoever orchestrated it. Kill him as a prisoner, he becomes a martyr. Kill him in open battle, he becomes a fallen hero. Let him live and you have an opponent to your political schemes that is growing stronger by the day merely because he exists the way he does.
To kill him, you need to ruin the perception people have of him, Make them see him in a less than favorablle light. THEN you can kill him without public backlash.

No offense, but you need movies and scripts explained to YOU. It's getting silly at this point and it's the reason your channel is shrinking. Good luck with the fake narrative about your credentials.
