I think he was describing the practice of looking at which key is not pressed in a 3 note chord rather than trying to read all the arrows at the same time.
Hey etienne, great video! It's helped me a lot to build better techniques than what came naturally since I started playing. I just have one question; at 6:20 you mention pattern manipulation, and I didn't quite get what that was, can you explain it a bit more for me?
I'm a wrist up user on mobile, but wrist down on PC. I think this may have to do with how I have different hit areas on each platform. On an ipad, the hit area is surprisingly large, where on PC, you have to hit a specific key, where keys are like 1.5cm x 1.5cm
I've found that I improve best at rhythm games by varying difficulties and practice types. I try to play low level accuracy maps, things at my level, and harder maps at once. I also switch between replaying a map a few times and switching maps every play. I guess just a ton of variation is what I'm getting at :]
Working on switching to wrist up at the moment, and while it's still very tiring for me and often trips me up, but I am noticing that I get these moments of much better control and accuracy. I'm still a pretty new player of just a month or so (Working on charts that are difficulty 8-11) and jumps have been extremely hard to learn, but I've noticed they are so much easier with wrist up (probably just a mental thing but if it helps ill take it)
to make wrist up probably more comfortable, try having the keyboard in a lower position so that your elbows are about a 90 degree and you don't have to bow out your shoulders a bit. in my case, my desk is too high and my chair doesn't go up that much so I'd have to use more muscles to maintain the position. not ideal. one thing you can also do to practice, is trying to type correctly with a wrist up position. it's technically the better way to type though harder to get used to.
Interesting enough I’ve learned to use wrist up and wide finger stance for warming up and accuracy training, then switch to wrist down to zero in on speed files
i tried etterna before and felt that being accurate was much harder, so i stopped and went back to osu mania, but now i am going to try playing etterna again because im tired of goofy mania pp system
Been trying to learn JS for a month or two now, and funnily enough I'm finding the hardest thing is learning the patterns. I still find myself hitting good/bad on the same patterns over and over again, despite downrating to 0.5x.... any ideas?
If youre struggling to learn the patterns youre either playing the same files over and over again and developing mindblock or youre playing stuff way out of your comfort zone. If youre downrating to 0.5x and still cant 96 a file you need to find an easier file and downrate that instead

There is many genres now for download. I actually like Guitar hero, but this is pretty addictive for me still and you could play it with computer keys or dancing, but I prefer computer keys. I am so glad this game doesn't use flash since that flash flash hero went down. I also like how you can change many settings plus that this has been around for so long which is why it has so many songs. Heck, there is even competitions for this game where people used computer keys. I don't mind that FCs are super hard to get in this game too since I am not competitive.

If you mean other vsrg's then yeah obviously. If youre talking about completely different rhythm games like osu then yeah there are bits and pieces you can take from this
facu46 when you go to select a song in Etterna, there’s a “Player Options” button on the side, which is also accessible by pressing enter on your keyboard while a song is loading. From here, move down to “Scroll” and select “Reverse.” This changes it so the notes go from the top down rather than the bottom up, which I prefer, because I started rhythm games with things like osu!mania, guitar hero, such like that.
Being able to actually play without getting lost I would think. True beginners would have to constantly look at the keyboard, and have no muscle memory for the game, making it that much more difficult to play. Someone with a grip on the game has the basic muscle memory down for at least some patterns, and I would say can play up to step 6 songs without much difficulty.
Sounds smart since from what i'm learning from this video, there's pros and cons to each position. By knowing when to switch position for the right patterns, it's all the more easier.

Can be dense or light And many more you will discover and come to understand through experience. Some other ones i dont feel like explaining that you can ask in the etterna discord include jumpstream, handstream, quadstream, dumps, one hand trills, jumptrills, runningmen, anchors, and a bunch of long note patterns that youll probably never see in etterna (such as inverses and shields)

The best advice I can give you is to get it checked out by someone who can give you a proper estimate of when your hands will be cleared up of any RSI-like symptoms. I'm not qualified to tell you whether or not you should keep playing through it but I definitely think it's important you make sure your hands are in good shape before you try to play a game like this.
I was struggling on wrist up on both hands. My current hands position are left hand wrist up, right hand wrist down. And I stucked at difficulty 16-19. Should I wrist up on both hands?
I've gotten this question before and my go-to answer is to usually pick a hand position, as both wrist up and wrist down require different muscles to use. Muscle imbalance could be possible as a result but I'm not exactly qualified to confirm the physiological after effects of using one hand for each hand positions. I hope this helps. @Momento Ronald this the old pc i use, it used to have lagspikes because of background processes hogging cpu and temp problems because it didnt have thermal paste applied, I i got decent pc now, but i dont play Etterna anymore
