I, personally have nothing against Catalans except when I went to Barcelona on vacation in 1999, I went to stores and asked how much a certain item was in Castillian since I was brought up speaking Spanish first and they looked at me and told me they didn't understand Castillian but they would talk to me in English. I told them in Spanish if they want to make a sale, they better talk to me in Spanish and tell me the damn price..LOL...They did :)

I would say the similarities are linguistic, but not truly genetic (perhaps except that southern French and many central French also descend from the ethnic brothers of Vasconians - the Aquitanians). The catalan-speaking region extends to southern France, but does necessarily mean Catalans are French, remember that France as a nation is a modern (or at best, medieval) invention.

When Visigoth Spain became divided by local loyalties, it was conquered by Muslims. When Muslim Spain became divided into local kingdoms, it was conquered by Christians, see the pattern? You're lucky, I wish I could go to Spain, I would see the architecture, I think the Moorish architecture there is amazing, like in Granada & Cordoba.
