Can anyone imagine seeing this trailer in a theater 50 dang years ago? It’s terrifying now!
I was there after Christmas day, waiting for 2 hours to see this movie and having no idea what this movie was about. I honestly had to cover my eyes. It was the scariest film experience in my entire life.
Oh shit I want to see pazuzu's face. Hail pazuzu
@@monsterpig3270 I loved it can't wait 4 the remake.
A girl on my block went to the movies with her family, and they showed this trailer. I heard they had to rush her out to the lobby she was so terrified, poor thing. It's one of the most intense trailers I've ever seen.
If you ask me, this trailer would've only worked 50 years ago. The movie itself is timeless and classic tho

PSNPS496 true there's a modernize trailer of this movie that shows everything lol
PSNPS496 ikr lol
+KEENG LOUIE No, it was an original preview but it was later replaced by the other trailer. This teaser was included in the 25th anniversary vhs.
KEENG LOUIE
Absolutely not. This is the original, banned trailer
As I understand it, this trailer wasn't banned. It was replaced by a trailer more reflective of the actual movie. All that black and white strobe photography is certainly unsettling, but it doesn't appear in the movie. Also, the highly dissonant music doesn't appear in the movie - in fact, this music was commissioned, but the director was dissatisfied and didn't use it, choosing instead to buy the rights to the already recorded "Tubular Bells" from Mike Oldfield.
I was more afraid of having a seizure rather than being afraid of the actual trailer
@Conline Frost well that is quite interesting
My thoughts exactly this trailer is ridiculous idk how anyone thinks it's well done it shows nothing but the same couple of still frames over and over with flashing lights. Enough to give some people a seizure. Terrible trailer for a great movie.

Audiences in 1973 were not at ALL prepared for this film. It's no wonder so many fainted im the lobby and threw up in the seats. One woman even had a heart attack.
Quentin Barrentine...The ushers weren't prepared either. I t was the biggest third shift cleaning crew I ever saw. The fans stayed on all night and still we couldn't get the stomach acid smell out the seats. It got in our uniforms. It got in our hair. NO ONE wanted washroom detail. We didn't have hooded suits then. Slowly we were issued latex gloves, smelling salts, and clip radios. This went on for well over a year once the theater owner found a loophole in the liability clause after so many people hit their heads against the armrest on the way to the floor. We couldn't touch them we were advised...just call the paramedics. After awhile, the city agreed to two ambulances parked outside full time on standby. It...was...that...bad.
@@shihanUKS Oh man you were an usher during this time? Massive respect to you for making it through that, that must've been ROUGH.
@@alphacraig2001 Oh yea.... What a time to be alive and see what movies were meant to do. Bring audiences together in sickness and in health. Mostly sickness though. Black people helping white people to the washroom before they let go. A white lady asking for ice chips for a black teen age girl who had fainted in the isle. None of that partisan race crap during those two hours. Everyone was horrified by the same thing. Then around January of 75, another novel... something called Jaws. It started all over again. I got a job in retail.
@@shihanUKS was jaws as bad??
@@Mcrclerk Jaws was different . Audiences clapped at the end. Humanity had won the battle. Audiences could sigh relief and hang their hats on it. But it could happen again if you went where it was...the water. And it was a tangible threat everyone understood...a shark. Not with "The Exorcist" which left audiences wide open. They sat there bleeding out. What the hell just happened? Redemption replaced by astonishment. The threat intangible but real. It could happen again and it could come for you anytime...anywhere. Not a shark. But the remorseless evil the shark implies. Which could be you or in you. Anytime. Anywhere hijacking the "Reagan" in all of us. Dread. Impending dread. This was Bits and pieces of nervous conversations in the lobby while assisting in wiping other peoples food and vomit off their suits. A great time to be alive .
This preview ran during a charlie brown christmas special in 1973. Charlie Brown! Thats nerve, man. Im only ten and Im lookin at the lights blinking on the tree and suddenly there are black and white flashes all over the room with music that scratches a chaulkboard. That awful face... Black to white... White to black... desecrating the cheerful reds , yellows, and blues of holiday cheer. ...and that priest shadowed in the driveway. I wasn't ten anymore.
+ReviewCam ...did it run on TV? It wasn't a run. It was a full frontal assault.
shihanUKS I was 9 when it came out and the damn newspaper ad scared the sh** outta me..
The newspaper had the full page poster-like ad showing the shadow of the priest. Couldn't look at it. Other ads had just a blowing curtain. That movie ran in downtown Chicago for two years at the state lake theater. Two years! Same theater. The mayor gave permission to the theater to have an ambulance parked around the corner on a regular basis.

Fun Horror Fact: The narrator’s “In this house” line at 0:20 has been sampled in the trailer for a recent horror film called Skinamarink, which has the same sort of style as The Exorcist.
Oh my god! I was wondering why that trailer felt so distantly familiar! And that distant familiarity is exactly what that film was trying to convey.

For all those commenting saying this is not scary and acting like they're tough and shit, kindly know that people back then (in 1973 when it was released) are not saturated with scary stuff like we are now. Society now is so used to violence and less believing in the paranormal stuff.
I'm still scared of it, tho. 😰
The context is important, horror films that really pushed the limits from the Slasher flicks of Halloween, to Evil Dead, to the modern day gore films of saw and hostel as made it so that films like these seems like child play on the surface. The Exorcist relies on pacing and atmosphere to make you scared. People who say ignorant things like “I watched this movie and was laughing, not scary at all” are just contrarians. They’ve simply heard that this is the scariest film ever made, and think they’re cool for not being spooked by a barrage of jump scares. Truth is this is one of the best horror films ever made, it’s not my personal favorite but I can’t deny the influence and impact this film had to the Horror Genre. It’s a masterpiece.
That sounds like society all kinds of backwards. This movie tells a true story that actually happened to a boy from Washington whose parents desperate for how to help him moved in w relatives in st Louis MO after the word Louis appeared as if being craved from under his skin. It was in the family's home and the former alexian brothers hospital that they performed his exorcism. The wing in the hospital where this occured was torn down as supernatural occurances continued until even after shut down and sealed off from use until it was decided that it was best to demolish it. The home still remqins tho current owners wish to be left alone.

This movie may not be as scary, but it will always be the most notable horror movie in cinema history. It touched a subject others wouldnt dare touch and yet they did more than simply that, they went beyond that and at the time was seen as more of a reality than fiction. Even to this day, many are still facinated with how amazing this movie is and how it feels as if it can possibly happen to anyone. It also brought psychological fear, which few films successfuly could achieve. And still brings shivers down our spines and inspired the genre of supernatural horror. Although it is heavily over used, few films can manage to almost have that fear and feeling that this movie had, but none will be as good as the exorcist. This is why it still is the #1 horror film of all time.
Bob Ross 2.0 the fuck this movie IS scary as hell. there is no other movie that can make this with me. cheesy hollywood horror movie wil never be at this level of true terror
Yea, it was way before its time when It came out
I can understand calling it one of the most notable horror movies in cinema history, but calling it _the_ most notable is a tricky claim. Films like "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari", "Frankenstein", "Psycho", "Night of the Living Dead", "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre", "Halloween", or "The Shining" could just as easily be argued for that title.
Saddest part is this movie is based off a true story except instead of a boy they changed it and used a girl

This is, hands down, without question, the most terrifying horror movie of not just the 70's, this is the most terrifying horror movie OF ALL TIME. People FAINTED in the theaters or run out screaming their lungs off without having even finished the movie. To say that this movie is scary would be the biggest understatement in history.
You'd think the director had met demons and had coffee with them to get to know what they were really like. The script, the acting, the special effect which were Beyond better than anything before and since, the mood, the music, the noises...those horrifying, pitiful, pathetic, terrifying utterances and grunts from the demon....there will never be another movie like it.
I know a lot of people can get scared easily but I think it’s interesting how scared people were of this film. I went to the Ouija Board Museum in Salem and the guy had told me that even the scene with Regan holding the ouija board made people terribly afraid and running out of theaters. The Exorcist is my absolute favorite movie and I put it on to help me sleep practically every night, I know now there’s people who get used to movies like this after watching it the first time and people now are used to horror movies like that but even my first time seeing it was just love at first sight

I saw a video of people's reaction as they left the theater during its first showing. A reporter asked people what they thought of the movie. One girl just sobbed, she couldn't speak.
