Make a Campfire Chair

  • This video will show you step-by-step how to make a campfire chair. These go by several names -- Bog Chair, Stargazer Chair, Viking Chair. It's made from one board. I used a circular saw and jigsaw. No glueing or fastening required. The boards slide together to form the chair. Easy to set up, take down, and store. A great weekend project.
Below is a link to the plans:

I have spent many, many hours sitting in chairs identical to this one. I also have made many of them for myself and to give to friends. A long time ago there was a simple modification to the usual design which helped mitigate and then remove the unofficial name - "The Tipsy Chair".
Back in the olden days those who sat around the fire in these chairs would have a tendency (for 'some' reason) to become unsteady resulting in often falling over on their side. Mud and wet were always a bad background there.
The answer was a 3' long 2" x 3" (or 2" x 4") bolted with two bolts and wing nuts to the inside dirt edge of the backboard. Long or short, the 3 feet of lateral support instantly removed the word "Tipsy" from the name of the chair.

If you tip the top of the chair backwards then you will have a campsite sawhorse frame for holding rough wood so you can saw wood into lengths for your campfire. A pair of them works best as a sawhorse. Also you can put one chair, as a sawhorse, on each side of a campfire to hold a green sapling pole, so that you can hang cooking pots over the campfire.

If I may make a suggestion. When applying stain or paint, brush across the grain the feather the finish with the grain.
Applying across the grain helps with penetration & brushing out with the grain looks better because any brush marks look like part of the grain thereby disappearing.
    Cheers Keith.

The first time I saw a chair like this was in an old curiosity shop in Cape Town South Africa many years ago. It was made of large limbs of some exotic wood and was painted very elaborately in aboriginal art. The back leg was forked to add stability and the seat was such it could hold a rather large man. The curator explained it had belong to a Zulu chief and was his "love" throne where up on he sat for the young wives of his harem to preform their duties. He added too, that he took it with him everywhere.
Ah, such a life a man of the sea is blessed to behold.

Nice work, not complicated design. Will add to build list and subscribe!
For outdoor furniture, hint I picked up from boat builder, dilute 1st coat of varnish with mineral spirit 50/50 to soak in and penetrate wood, rub between coats, 2nd coat thicken mixture, 3rd coat repeat. Final coat 90-100% varnish. Buff out any brush marks, though it's fairly self leveling

You can also pad the seat and the headrest; more work, but it makes the chair more comfortable to sit on. Hey, thanks for the video and plans! I used your plans to make one for myself this morning. The only thing I did different was use the table saw to cut the majority of the tenon, then finished off the last inch or so with the jigsaw. I‘m going to make more to go around the fire pit, but I‘ll probably make a router template for the cut-out square in the middle of the back board just to speed things up. My jigsaw is pretty horrible and that part took the longest. Thanks again for the inspiration!

Simple and crisp.. The chair looks beautiful.. You picked a fine piece of board, with an interesting wood grain. Excellent easy project... Thank you.

very cool and in my van i could multi-purpose those as part of a shelf and to get out of the mud in a pinch.

Thanks for the comment! I hadn't thought about a dual purpose for these chairs, but I guess that would work. You might want to use some stronger wood.

As someone who has made, and used these type chairs for nearly 30 years...one piece of advice. On the front "foot" (ie - the bottom part of the chair back), cut a V or half-circle and make it have two "feet". Much better for uneven ground around a campsite.

@@Ojb_1959 - Not really that much. I've been using these, as I said, for 30+ years in medieval re-enactment camping, and I'm a big dude. Never had one do that. Then again, you don't make the "feet" small. Probably 3" or so each. *shrug*
