Make a Campfire Chair

- This video will show you step-by-step how to make a campfire chair. These go by several names -- Bog Chair, Stargazer Chair, Viking Chair. It's made from one board. I used a circular saw and jigsaw. No glueing or fastening required. The boards slide together to form the chair. Easy to set up, take down, and store. A great weekend project.
Below is a link to the plans:

Thank you so much, I'll be making this for my mate who is turning 50 next month. I'm going on an 1800km road trip to celebrate with him
Thanks for watching! Have a wonderful trip!
I have spent many, many hours sitting in chairs identical to this one. I also have made many of them for myself and to give to friends. A long time ago there was a simple modification to the usual design which helped mitigate and then remove the unofficial name - "The Tipsy Chair".
Back in the olden days those who sat around the fire in these chairs would have a tendency (for 'some' reason) to become unsteady resulting in often falling over on their side. Mud and wet were always a bad background there.
The answer was a 3' long 2" x 3" (or 2" x 4") bolted with two bolts and wing nuts to the inside dirt edge of the backboard. Long or short, the 3 feet of lateral support instantly removed the word "Tipsy" from the name of the chair.
I'm going to make a mini version for a phone stand on my desk, with a small hole in the seat for the charging cable... thanks for the great video and inspiration.
That's a neat idea!
Brill!!

👍
Good idea! I think I’ll do that too. Lol
Ooooh.cool idea.
That's brilliant 👏
Thanks for the video and awesome plans. I built the chair yesterday and took it in the truck for after my hike today. Sat on it in the sun and carved a wood spirit. Better than an expensive nylon chair made in china.
Awesome! I'm glad you got to build one.
Been watching a ton of these videos and this is the first time i've seen this shorter design and i love it! Would be way easier to store/transport. Also thanks for including the plans!!
Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!
If you tip the top of the chair backwards then you will have a campsite sawhorse frame for holding rough wood so you can saw wood into lengths for your campfire. A pair of them works best as a sawhorse. Also you can put one chair, as a sawhorse, on each side of a campfire to hold a green sapling pole, so that you can hang cooking pots over the campfire.
Thanks! I hadn't thought of that use.

@DIRTYBOB59 Thank you Sir. 💕
Good for those un-expected family gatherings outdoors, Easy to store and to setup. Like it.
A very practical project. Thanks for the comments!
Bought a 12"×2"×12' board today to make two for myself and my lady. Thanks for the plans!
Awesome! Have fun!
@@fouroakscrafts7240 Thanks!
That's actually referred to as a 2x12x12
@@Philadelphia19147 thanks for the update but I'm not a carpenter so Idc.
@@icarusburning2208 you will when you go buy the material and they look at you like you got three eyeballs.
I appreciate this. I made two out of a single 2x12x12 board. I just applied poly and left them unstained. They're sharp. Again, I appreciate this.
Awesome! Enjoy those chairs!
I’ve been sawing lumber since 1986 and looking at the grain on the pattern piece and new piece, I noticed the grain lines up! Same planks beside each other from the same tree!
Yes, I believe I cut the boards from the same plank so should match pretty close. Thanks for the comment!
Looks like a great project to do with my 14 yr old son while we’re in quarantine. Thanks so much for the plans and expert commentary. Stay well!
You're welcome! Have fun making this with your 14 year old!
@@fouroakscrafts7240 I wish I had a son to the project with.
Oh wait, I am the son.
If I may make a suggestion. When applying stain or paint, brush across the grain the feather the finish with the grain.
Applying across the grain helps with penetration & brushing out with the grain looks better because any brush marks look like part of the grain thereby disappearing.
Cheers Keith.
Thanks for the tip! Another thing I would suggest with pine is using a sealer before applying the stain. I forgot to do that with these, and the stain came out a little splotchy.
Just a very simple idea love it. Got 13 grandkids gonna get started making one for each of them! Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks for the comment! 13 grandkids! You're going to be busy. I wish you all the best and good luck on making the chairs.
Might just try building a few of these with my kids during “shop class” (home with the kids during the Covid19). I’ve got lots of rough milled lumber to do stuff with. Thanks!
Cool! Good luck!
Had never heard of these before, and it had only popped into my feed 3 days ago. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks! Glad I could help.
Looks like a great chair for busking.
i recently got into the hobby of woodworking and i love how simplistic this is! in addition, you have made the plans available for free thank you so much i look forward to this project. heading to the depot later today
Thanks for the comment! I hope you have fun making the chairs!
The first time I saw a chair like this was in an old curiosity shop in Cape Town South Africa many years ago. It was made of large limbs of some exotic wood and was painted very elaborately in aboriginal art. The back leg was forked to add stability and the seat was such it could hold a rather large man. The curator explained it had belong to a Zulu chief and was his "love" throne where up on he sat for the young wives of his harem to preform their duties. He added too, that he took it with him everywhere.
Ah, such a life a man of the sea is blessed to behold.
I have forgotten about these chairs.... I will put this is my list of things to make! Thanks for sharing!!!
This is going to make a great winter project for my Webelos 2 Scouts... So glad I found this video... Thanks
Right
One of the simplest projects I've seen.
But, nevermind of that, one of the coolest ever !!!
Thanks for sharing this.
I'll try to make it.
Thanks for the comment! Yes, I love the simplicity and the use of the classic mortise and tenon joint.
I have two of these style chairs and I made an Amish Style heart on the back for a handle.
Rango, I'd like to see a photo of those.
Nice easy chair build. Looks like it will last a hundred years. Great video too.
We had these in boy scouts. Great, simple chairs for sitting around the camp fire.
How convenient! This can disassemble and pack or easily store with the rest of my camping gear. Thank you for the video, I’m on it!
Thanks for the comment! Good luck with making a chair.
I made some of these chairs using 5/4 yellow pine, decking type material. They are light weight compared to your 2" rough cut stock. Very simple and very nice design. Easy to store.
Thanks for the tip!
I belonged to a mountain man reenactment club. Back in the eighties. I made them all the time for friends. Still have a couple.
This is a african tribal chair. I work in a museum and we get alot of them coming through from over 300 years old...
Interesting! Someone else had commented that it looked like a birthing chair. And there does appear to be such a thing.
It's a birthing chair. People in Africa do get babies too, you know.
KulaFachi Yes indeed, My close friend Yosef Crowder built these chairs for decades in his Atlanta African gift shop called “Wood Is Wonderful”
These are very common throughout Africa where they are known as Chief's Chairs
Looking forward to building a few of these chairs this week for our firepit. Thank for the tutorial.
I made a couple of these many years ago and they turned out to be everyone's favorite. Simple to transport and store.
They are great chairs! Thanks for the comment!
Its called a campfire chair because after 5 minutes of sitting uncomfortably in it you get up and throw it in the fire
Nice video. I tend to measure five times, cut three times, then throw it all in the firepit.
Great job on the camfire chair. Since watching your video I have 4 chairs started for this deer season camp. I'm going to do some carving on the back and will be doing a video. I'll give you a shout-out for the chair when I put out the video. Have a great day!
Very cool! I've also been thinking about doing something similar. Maybe a wood spirit or howling wolf.
Free plans, just like you said, there is something you don’t normally see! Great project and you know I will be making these for the fore pit. Thank you!
Thanks for the comment! I hope you enjoy your campfire chairs. Great for around the fire pit.
I wish the free plans detailed more....no mention of the curved cut and what to use for the curve and what point it started . Just that you used the old ones. Not complaining (much) but if you added that it would cover everything.
What an interesting project. I’m gonna see if my son can make a couple of these for the back porch. Of course I will help him and now we have your video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge❤. Yours came out fantastic
Very Neat little seat. I am already making new designs of it in my head. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, the design possibilities are great! Good luck!
Thank you for sharing.
Great tutorial 👌.
Stay strong and be safe everyone 🙏.
Thanks for the comment!
Made 2 of these today! And plan on making a few more for family and friends. Thanks for the video and plans!
Awesome to hear! Glad the plans and video were helpful.
10 years ago I made 100s if these! Didn't have the heart to sell them! Just made them for family and friends!! As well as friends of family and their friends! I will say do not us poly on them!!! You will be disappointed. At least I was! But it is great to see this vidio on how to make them! If anyone wants to make someone happy for them one of these. Ya can't go wrong
Thanks for the comment! Just curious -- why do you discourage the use of poly? I've left mine out in the weather for over 14 months now, and no signs of rot. I used Spar (or marine) urethane which is different than the generic polyurethane.
Oh Man....I LOVE this chair!!!! Gonna build one (or TWO) myself..looks SO cool !!! LOVE the Grain pattern on the Pine boards you used! Thanks for the tutorial...Cheers!!!
Thank you!
You can always take a torch to the wood and burn or darken the grain even more before staining.
Nice work, not complicated design. Will add to build list and subscribe!
For outdoor furniture, hint I picked up from boat builder, dilute 1st coat of varnish with mineral spirit 50/50 to soak in and penetrate wood, rub between coats, 2nd coat thicken mixture, 3rd coat repeat. Final coat 90-100% varnish. Buff out any brush marks, though it's fairly self leveling
Thanks for the comment! Yeah, that spar urethane is great. This chair has been outside for quite a while now and still doing well.
This style of chair is really comfortable to sit in.
I'm still enjoying mine. Thanks for the comment!
I've made dozens of these chairs for others. Your tutorial is spot on. Great job.
Thank you!
It's so easy to make, and it's so brilliant 👍
Thank you for the plans and this great video!
👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Thanks for the comment! Hope you enjoy making the chair.
That looks like a chair for for a campfire to me.
It may take some time to get going but its better than trying to relax on it.
make simple realy things...
Thanks for video and hello from Russia!!!
Thanks for the comment!
WoW Simple but well made .
Thanks! I love the simplicity of this project.
I made one 4 years ago and I take it everywhere
Cool! They are very portable.
These chairs are African designs, My friend Yosef Crowder is a master creator of this design, he learned this particular craft in Togo
Thanks for the effort... really like the chair. The way you presented making it was clear and easy to follow and with limited tools to I will make two in lockdown London.
Cool! Thanks for the comments!
Maybe a 70 degrees cut will offer more surface for distributing weight equally, but you also did a great job, congrats from a ITALY
Great point! I think I've seen other designs where they've used the 70 degree cut. I just wanted to keep in simple, but some may want to incline more in the chair.
Thank you for sharing this, I can now put to good use some of my extra boards from my previous projects.
Thanks for watching! It's a simple satisfying project. I'm still using the chair from the video.
great for camping use
I made 2 these a couple of years ago. Easy to do but the price of wood is outrageous. I like sitting on them and so do the grandkids. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I was shocked at the price of timber and the dang spar urethane! But it's a 50th present for a mate and he's worth it
Thank you for sharing young man, I need a couple of these outback. 🙏👍
Thanks for the comment sir!!
Couple of boat cushions and you're all set. Great video. :)
This is awesome. Thank you for your generosity with the how to video and blueprints.
If you make the back board longer, you can give yourself something to rest your head against. You can also pad the seat and the headrest; more work, but it makes the chair more comfortable to sit on. I've also seen chairs like this decorated with carvings/painting; turn the simple chair into a work of art
Yes, good idea to make the back board longer if you want to rest your head. Lots of design possibilities with these chairs.
Nice little chair to use while fishing next to a river bank or harbor bank. Add a soft cushion on the seat and some eye bolts/screws on the side edges to hang some accessories with carabiners.
My uncles showed me this decades ago..always a crowd pleaser.
Thanks for the comment! I was surprised how popular these chairs are.
This project is awesome .. doing it this weekend
Good luck with it! Let me know how it turns out. thanks for watching.
Great video, just wanted to share with you that I grew up on a ranch called Four Oaks Ranch/Farms, when you started up our dirt road up to the house at the top of the hill there were four huge oak trees that almost made one huge tree and that's where my dad got the idea to name or ranch. Just cool to see somebody else using such a great name and logo.
That's cool to hear and thanks for sharing! I really like working with oak in many of my projects so I wanted to use that word for sure. For me the "Four" came from family. I grew up in a family of four and now I have my own family of four. Oak is strong and family is strong.
I've gotta make a few of these for my RV. Thank you so much for the plan and video!!
Glad you like them! Thanks for the comment!
i have made these before and they are actually very comfortable, use an angle grinder and engraver for custom look, flowers, fish or whatever
Very cool! Yes, lots of ways to customize or decorate these chairs.
this is the most simplest and easiest chair to make!!! andi love it. Surely gotta make one when this lockdown is over and market opens
Thanks for the comment!
This is awesome, thank you for you're time and knowledge and sharing this with us all
Beautiful yet, simple and sturdy design. Thank you so much for sharing this video, sir...
You're welcome! Glad I could help!
Thank you Sir for you motivating inspiring & directin .. the three things that this world need to continue with.
For some there's therapy.. for the rest of us there's projects, fun, hobbies, livin, hiking, coachin, cookin, wrenchin, peacefulness, and so on !!
Amen to that! Hobbies can be some of the best therapy.
Thank you for the idea and the video. I'm going to build one for each grand child.
That is awesome! Good luck with this project!
You can spend a few more bucks and use a 2x16. A little more seating surface never hurt. If you really want to fancy it up, use your sander to form the seating surface to fit your arse a little bit. Fun project. Thanks for posting.
Nice and simple. Love it.
Finally, a project I can do! Thanks for sharing.
Hey, thanks for the video and plans! I used your plans to make one for myself this morning. The only thing I did different was use the table saw to cut the majority of the tenon, then finished off the last inch or so with the jigsaw. I‘m going to make more to go around the fire pit, but I‘ll probably make a router template for the cut-out square in the middle of the back board just to speed things up. My jigsaw is pretty horrible and that part took the longest. Thanks again for the inspiration!
Thanks for the comments! I like your suggestions to make the process more efficient. Especially, if you make several of these chairs.
Chris McDowell | CMR Woodworks Hello Chris where do I find the plans at? Thanks
Thanks for the video. It’s awesome. Just getting started in the woodworking business.
Thanks for the comment and good luck on your business.
Love it - thanks for posting!
Keep it coming
When I first saw that I said wow I made one of these before, mine was so much smaller, mine was for holding books, yours looks great…
Thanks for watching!
I like your version better than others I've seen. You have a new subscriber.

Simple and crisp.. The chair looks beautiful.. You picked a fine piece of board, with an interesting wood grain. Excellent easy project... Thank you.

Wow. Putting it on a little thick, eh?
Great result
This is my after Xmas project when I get my new jigsaw❤❤❤❤
Awesome and good luck with the project!
Did you get your jigsaw from Santa clause?
Very cool..
I took you plans and scaled them down to use for a phone stand for my desk
That works too! Good adaptation!
Many many thanks to you sir
That's the fastest and quietest jig saw I've ever seen.
Right? You spotted that too!
Pay for what you get. Top of the line. I cheap one will do the job too
So much better when you make it yourself, cool!
Absolutely! Thanks for the comments!
Greetings from North West Coast Canada. Our forests here are full of Red Cedar. I will try these chairs made of Ceder
Nice looking chair this would be great for us while we are out prospecting and sitting around the campfire!
Thank you!
I believe It's an African chair. Historicly first found in North Africa.
Awesome. Thank you.
very cool and in my van i could multi-purpose those as part of a shelf and to get out of the mud in a pinch.
Thanks for the comment! I hadn't thought about a dual purpose for these chairs, but I guess that would work. You might want to use some stronger wood.
Great project, and well explained.
As someone who has made, and used these type chairs for nearly 30 years...one piece of advice. On the front "foot" (ie - the bottom part of the chair back), cut a V or half-circle and make it have two "feet". Much better for uneven ground around a campsite.
Thanks! That sounds like a great idea.
But if the grounds wet they will dig in though.
@@Ojb_1959 - Not really that much. I've been using these, as I said, for 30+ years in medieval re-enactment camping, and I'm a big dude. Never had one do that. Then again, you don't make the "feet" small. Probably 3" or so each. *shrug*
