God this match was incredible. This is why I consider tennis such a superior sport. It has everything, power, endurance, stamina, intelligence, strategy, and mental resilience. It’s just incredible. I love how humble both of them are. They both make legendary plays and yet they walk back modest and aware of the talent of their opponent.
LOVE the vintage opening. Womens tennis was so exciting during this era. Serena was already incredible (she served amazing in this match) but Anna had great talent too, especially around the net and constructing a point. Look at those swinging volleys in the middle of the court. A shame her career was derailed by injuries so young.
I agree with you and I also wonder if the tennis system let Anna down. A super talented, young girl with bags of potential and skill was exposed to the full force of the commercial world that may have taken time away from the practice court, gym and good advice. Anna achieved much in singles and doubles and I wonder what might have been for her but I guess that applies to do many players. We've been very lucky to have great champions on the men's and women's game that make it look easy for extended periods (decades) to play at the top and do it week in and week out.
@@jasonwillcox3208 what? she didnt achieve much at all in singles. she made the semis of wimbledon once or twice but she didnt even manage to win ONE official wta tour title in her entire career.
True, women's tennis was in a true Golden Era from about 97-2005. Had Graf, Seles, Novotna, Sanchez Vicario, Kournikova, Davenport, Venus and Serena Williams, Mary Pierce, Martina Hingis, Jennifer Capriati, Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin and they all were playing one another. The incredible matchups went from being at the Finals and sometimes semis to having incredibly interesting matches between absolute stars at the round of 16 quite often.
both women look absolutely beautiful here. anna's perfect skin tone and love serena's hair with the diamond earrings and hairclip. one of my all-time favourite serena outfits, as well.
@@Kamath.venkat I have never seen a man with boobs like that lmao Serena has such a womanly figure, she was absolutely gorgeous when she was young her body was incredible
Wow! This match is old and I remember watching this match. Lmao. Serena was playing lines way back when. The Williams sister introduction to speed and hard hitting shots. And the rest is History
Dont care who won people came to see Anna all the eyes were on her She made Womens Tennis what is today opened the door to Russian and Eastern European players that dominate the sport today.....
GREAT form from Serena. Kournikova definitely had the game to win Slams in singles too. I think the Barbie Doll celebrity hype got to her head smh. Hopefully she saved money!
These women are both babes! Obviously Serena went on to be the GOAT and it’s so fun to watch her game here vs how she played in her peak periods, because she really changed how she played and approached her game, she grew, but always had an excellent technical foundation on her serve and ground strokes. As for Anna, she had incredible hands and was a truly gifted player and athlete, but her lack of a reliable serve, coupled with bad nerves and a lack of desire to improve really hindered her from becoming the player she should have been. Maybe she didn’t love the game. She had the potential to win slams and be a top three player. It’s really too bad.
At one point i bet anna loved the game and wasnt ready for the likes of the Williams sisters. When you play and everyone is calling you the next big thing but you keep on losing to the same people over and over it could go both ways. You improve or your brain juat starts to wander else where and you question your tennis career
@@onetwocueit’s more complicated than that. I’m sure she loved the game initially but her mother was extremely detrimental to her game and took her away from Nick Boletteri when he wanted to develop her service motion. Kournikova genuinely did not pursue growing her game, it wasn’t about getting disappointed by losing consistently, it was about not moving forward after her 1998 season and listening to the wrong people like her mom.
😂😂 and they swear Anna gave Serena a game 😭😭 this was a cake walk for her like a lion playing with her food Serena to strong for Anna 6-3 6-2 that's not close at all
Even watchin slender beautiful Anna was amazing. She is a winner even when she loses. Prettiest player in the history of the game and can swat a hard shot without muscles at will.
I was surfing in Costa Rica once... and I'm not really that great of a surfer... and I got caught in a pretty massive set... not Pipeline massive but big enough that someone not used to being stuck in the spin cycle out in the ocean might panic in. And I just kept getting drug off the board the rolled by these unbelievably powerful waves. And no matter what I tried I just couldn't get out of their way or back to shore. They were just too powerful and too relentless. I truly thought I was going to drown. And I imagine Anna felt a lot like that just a few serves into this match. No way to win. Completely out-matched. Stick in the spin cycle for the duration. Serena changed the game forever. And I'm sure Anna could sense that blood in the water in this match. She "retired" a couple of years later... after making 50x more from endorsements than she ever earned by winning matches.
It’s something about white blonde girls that makes Serena play pissed off haha. 13:32 what is that? Never seen her do that before shaking hands. I think it was to rub it in her face lol. Just like when she does the number 1 finger thing only against Azarenka and Sharapova hahaha.
She used to do the pre-celebration before shaking hands a lot in the early 00s, so it wasn't about Anna. Something she probably outgrew. A couple years ago she would race to shake the hands of the umpire before her opponent and it created some hilarious situations
@@karamazov93 ya that was funny I think it became a superstition. Maria knew this and tried to shake the umpires hand before her in Miami 2013 and it was so awkward. Maria ended up grabbing her hand haha.
