Epica - The Essence of Silence - Piano Cover by Vikram Shankar

- I first heard this song when Epica released it a week ago, and I instantly fell in love. I knew I wanted to cover it on piano, but it definitely wasn't easy - the song's very guitar based, with lots of almost Trivium-style riffs, and has a lot of harsh vocals as well, which don't really translate easily to piano. (Also, the guitar solo is built off of shapes that are comfortable to play on guitar, but very awkward on piano, hahaha!) Therefore, I had to do a lot of interpretation to make it sound pianistic. I hope I've done this fantastic song justice, despite my significant artistic license! Enjoy!

^A thing my girlfriend and I do together. I happen to really proud of the stuff we've put out, super ambient stuff. Makes for very relaxing night listening, I like to think. We've covered material from bands like Nightwish and Within Temptation, and we're in the process of writing our first original album together.

About me: I'm a 19 year old guy (18 when this was recorded) who plays piano, guitar, drums, bass, tenor sax, french horn, and mandolin. I've been studying piano for 12 years, and I've been playing the others, self taught, for a few years. I mainly play metal (especially melodic and progressive stuff, but I'm into everything), jazz (modal jazz and fusion in particular), classical, classic rock, pop, and lots of other stuff. And listening wise, I'm all over the map... I honestly listen to and can appreciate everything out there.

Woah, this is slick. I like your interpretation of the heavy parts. I play piano but not quite that well. It's like you took the whole song and made a Rachmonninoff prelude out of it! Very nice, and I remember you commenting on all the Epica songs lol.
Viktor Vladenkoph Thanks man!!
oh my... this...this is amazing , this is more than just a cover...that's true talent right there.
+adel dk Thanks so much!!
No words.... just amazing cover. When I was listening it i felt chills - masterpiece!
Thanks so much Eryk!
Wow, man! If I close my eyes, i can hear each instrument of the original song. You have made an arragement whit lots of detail. Great job, specially because it is dificult to match, playing the piano, a work whose strength lies in the distorsions and gutural. My most sincere congratulations for that.
+AM SANTA CECILIA DE BULLAS Thank you so much!!
Very nice performance. I don't even call it a cover, it's a real performance, an original arrangement. Liked and shared.
Normando Moura Wow thank you!!
This is sublime! And that Kingdom of Heaven chorus bit at the end...!
No sé me habría ocurrido nunca una versión de esta canción con piano. Perfecta👍
Thanks so much!
Awesome!
Please do more Epica covers!
Thank you Ziad!
what absolutely lovely articulation of the vocal lines! it's really hard to transpose vocal melody onto an instrument and have it sound good and blend well without just being like "yep that's that ok", and you've really made that right hand work feel like an essential musical element. of course, epica's a particularly appropriate band for achieving this, because of how simone constructs her parts and the band constructs theirs around her, but still. super beautiful, glad I found this late rather than never :)
the "I believe, I believe" after the first heavy portion is a great example, where i guess you split the whole notes of the initial I believe into like a duple-triple walk up for the repetition of the phrase, with a bit jazzy-feeling pause between. every little touch of this is gold!
i was see this video on Epica's fb page

Absolutely fantastic!!! Great job dude!
Thanks Thomas!
you, sir, have travelled beyond reality
Something is wrong
My strength has gone
Thoughts are corrupting my mind
I can see I perceive this ain’t me
Something so strong
My mood has swung
I can’t get it out of my head
I believe that my mind misleads me
(We confuse)
Is it a doubt you try to hide
(Tangle and abuse)
Just have an open look inside
(We appear)
It’s just a dreary memory stuck in your mind
(Memory stuck in your mind)
Retrieve your balance
Use your senses to observe
(The essence of silence)
Search for essence
Find the silence within you
(The essence is…)
You’re searching and bursting
There seems to be no cure
When tension endures
Delusions corrupting my mind
I can see I perceive this ain’t me
There seems to be no way
When light fades to grey
To get them all out my head
I believe that my mind misleads me
(We confuse)
Is it a doubt you try to hide
(Tangle and abuse)
Just have an open look inside
(We appear)
It’s just a dreary memory stuck in your mind
(Memory stuck in your mind)
Retrieve your balance
Use your senses to observe
(The essence of silence)
Search for your essence
Find the silence within you
(The essence is…)
Make a start
Explore your heart
When a persistent memory
Penetrates deep in your mind
Allow the silence to destroy
Your thoughts in every kind
(We confuse)
Is it a doubt you try to hide
(Tangle and abuse)
Just have an open look inside
(We appear)
It’s just a dreary memory stuck in your mind
(Memory stuck in your mind)
Retrieve your balance
Use your senses to observe
(The essence of silence)
Allow the silence
To wipe your thoughts away
Retrieve your balance
Use your senses to observe
(The essence of silence)
Search for essence
Find the silence within you
(The essence lies IN SILENCE)

This seems so difficult to play, but you have done it beautifully. :)
Thank you so much! It's definitely a challenge - probably the hardest of my covers thus far just because it was so hard to convert convincingly to piano. I'm glad you liked it! :)
Did you reference Kingdom of Heaven's final chorus in the end...? (5:49). I really liked it...!
