A Singer Is Only A Singer Because They Have The Courage To Be One

  • In this video, we speak the truth against the lies of the discouragers. Many people would have you believe that you are not worthy to be a singer. They are wrong. You have what it takes if you have the courage to try and to succeed.
A Singer Is Only A Singer Because They Have The Courage To Be One
I want to get a little personal, if that's OK?
More time than not, I see people rise above others because of their chutzpah, their "charisma" or dare I use the word "balls".
So I want to talk broadly first, and then zero in on singing.
We've all heard the term "little man complex" or, where many believe it came from, "Napoleon Complex". We see the short guy dominating the big guy because he has the audacity to stand up to them with abilities that are perceived, real, or both.
In Napoleon's case, of course we know he was an incredible strategic commander with incredible boldness.
Please hang in there with me on this, I believe it will be worth your time.
We see "plus size models" garnering more "views" on the internet and in print publications, as many point out they feel they are "sexier" than the dollies that are skinny and edited-to-perfection picture-perfect. Why is this? It's because they carry themselves with an attitude, and a "bigger personality" than the rest of their competition.
I do want to be clear about something. This does not mean they are "better" necessarily, it simply means that they cast aside the stereotypical mold of what people are conditioned to believe is "perfection" and they fearlessly use their God-given abilities.
The reason I want to be clear about this is no one wants a doctor as their doctor just because he's arrogant, conceited, full of himself and thinks he's the best doctor in the world. They want a doctor based on performance, schooling, and their ability to truly help people.
But there are other professions that are subjective, such as art, music, acting (to some degree) and so on. Whereas in sports there is usually a fairly clear point system that determines ability, art is much more subjective.
With that said, and for fear of sounding like I'm picking on someone, if you look at the Kardashians, maybe someone should have just changed their name to "Audaciousians". I'm not aware of any amazing acting skills, singing skills, or other artistic skills, other than just being plain bombastic.
This now brings me to my point.
A singer is only a singer because they have the courage, or "guts" to be one.
Singing is most definitely in the category of subjective art.
Let me list a few singers that I personally feel do not have "great singing ability" but certainly carved out an incredible career.
The first one is maybe one of the greatest songwriters of our time that has done more to influence people than any other singer that I am aware of.
That singer is Bob Dylan. I don't want to belabor this, but I do want to point out just a few people who covered Bob Dylan's music.
Adele, Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison, Norah Jones, The Black Crowes, Michael Bolton, David Bowie, Garth Brooks, Jeff Buckley, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, Kelly Clarkston, Joe Cocker, Coldplay, Ministry, Phil Collins, Sam Cooke, Joan Baez, Elvis Costello, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Miley Cyrus, Neil Diamond, Guns 'N Roses, etc...
Yeah, between you and me, Bob Dylan could hardly sing his way out of a hat. And yet, he was able to convey his stories, his melodies with his songwriting, and change the face of music history with his artistry.
Again, I'm not looking to pick on anyone, but let's list a few other people that don't have the greatest singing abilities: David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Rick Ocasek, Joe Cocker, Chrissie Hynde, Lana Del Rey (ooh, I'm going to get hate for that one), Johnny Cash, Mark Knopfler, and this list goes on and on...
But what do they all have in common?
Guts, Courage, Audacity, Charisma, Boldness, Fearlessness... all of the attributes that display confidence, regardless of what people or the press think about them.
Now, we could take one of the worst voices here being Bob Dylan all the way to one of the greatest voices being Luciano Pavarotti.
How much gray is in the center? How much room is there between Bob Dylan and Luciano Pavarotti?
    Quite a bit, right?
My suggestion to you is: there is a lot of room in this area for you and your voice to do what you love and to share it with the world.
A singer is only a singer because they have the courage to be one.

Ken, I’ve been a musician for 30 years and a professional engineer for 15. Several years ago I took a nasty fall in such a way that I damaged my finger on my fretting hand. After much PT I eventually had to accept that my guitar playing would never be the same. It was devastating, but I kept on producing, mixing and mastering music for profit.
Some years back I found your channel and it has been wildly inspiring. I have experienced so much trauma in my life that I need to express and I want to do it vocally, with words not just notes on an instrument.
I decided I wanted to take your course but unfortunately a few weeks ago I had a heart attack and had 3 stents put in over 2 surgeries. I had to go back to the hospital Christmas morning because of shortness of breath due to clotting and I’m still here now as I write this. My road to recovery will take some time but recovering and being able to take your course is in part what gives me strength and focus.
As I laid on the operating table partially sedated I thought about how I haven’t been brave enough in my life and not using my voice both singing and speaking up about my experiences left me feeling regret. I promised myself that I would change that.
When I’m recovered, I’m coming for you and your course. Even if it’s just in part, I believe you will help me find my voice.
Thank you Ken for being brave yourself and putting yourself out there. You’ve inspired me and so many others. You’re such an important person to so many of us.
*I’m 41 and live a healthy lifestyle, I have heart disease on both sides of my family.

We find ourselves so naked, so exposed.
Singing is so personal, it’s intimate.
And most audiences are hypercritical about singing, as they may feel that anyone can do it.
Ken, this is a fantastic video.
Guys, get a vocal coach, and fly.

Indeed very personal. Many songs hit people differently and say the message just right. Or not, but of course that's the personal part; how we interpret them. Music is indeed a language unto itself, and also a modifier/enhancer to our language.

Really resonate with this Ken, ever since I was 11-12 years old I always dreamed of being able to sing but never really practiced or embraced it simply because I always thought I was always going to be outdone by those who were already mega stars. But last year I finally made the decision to pursue a dream I thought I was never going to be able to do. Since then I’ve worked with an extremely talented vocal coach and released 3 covers and can finally hear a voice in myself that I thought I’d never had. Everyone has their own unique journey and can achieve what they want if they truly commit to the right course of action and believe they can do it. Very happy to hear how far my voice has come even if I’ve only been singing for about 7-8 months, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made☺️

"It's never too late to be, what you might have been". Truer words have never been spoke. I did some chorus singing way back in middle school and high school, sang OK, did a few concerts at my school and others, but I had lousy music teachers that were just there to collect their paycheck - they didn't give a crap about their students. They did no real vocal training, no teaching of the importance of breath support, warm-ups, lip trills and other phonation exercises etc. I had an unsupportive family. I won't go into detail, but suffice it to say they did not have my artistic best interests in mind.
I just turned 59 last week. I started watching your videos and using your warm-up exercises, maybe 2 months ago or so - I should have taken note of the date I got serious in growing my voice. I can't thank you enough. They have grown my voice in ways I didn't think possible by following your 7 minute warm-up routines. I can feel the chest resonance now when I speak and sing, where before I could not. I've also got a smooth connection between my chest voice and headvoice with no breaks. Using my piano for tone reference my range is from as low as F2 or G2 depending on the day in the morning up to C5. I'm taking weekly lessons now from a vocal coach and my singing voice, while not great yet, is improving day by day.
I've also lost my fear of singing solo in front of other people.
I can't thank you enough, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. I don't care what my age is. I'm developing my singing voice, and I intend to go places with it once I retire in a few years. I already have a choir opportunity which I'm sure will help further grow my singing voice. I am so happy I found your videos - they gave me what I needed to finally get going, and find a vocal coach for in-person lessons. Wishing you all the best. I hope you see this comment.

So true! Singing was by far THE HARDEST thing I have ever learned to do. And I've done a LOT! Fortunately my fear was exceeded by my determination and faith (i.e courage). I really wanted to be able to sing while playing piano and guitar to make my live performances so much more powerful. It took years! And I'm still evolving. It really helped playing at a piano bar with a singer and being able to pop in and out of singing with him to take most of the singing.I got to learn a few simple secrets singing live, like in a piano bar:
    1) Pick a song that is right for your voice
    2) Pick a song the audience knows and is preferable upbeat. (Don't worry if you're sick of it or if it's a little overplayed...see points below)
    3) Pick the right key for you
    4) Start on the right note!
    5) Make sure the audience is drunk and/or stoned. (Preferably more than you)
    6) Have fun!!! (Most important......and don't forget - if you practice to the point where it's not practice, it's fun, you'll be ready for pumping out the fun live cause you know the song so well and you just love making the audience happy with that same song you're always playin)
    Love the channel Ken!!!!

Geez Ken, most of your videos zero in on 3-4-5 key points/techinques but this whole video just keeps a barrage of TRUTH bombs exploding. Certain one's we may NOT wanna own up to. When i first started giggin solo, the LEAST lil twinge of FEAR/SELF DOUBT would keep my vocal LOW in the mix, a bit "pitchy"/nasaly, zero projection. THEN, FINALLY.. a tune Ive been doing for 40 yrs allows that "twinge" to go away.. ABRACAPOCUS!, the chest voice kicks in and magically ,a 180 happens and the newer tunes copped (last 5-10yrs) start exemplifying all Ive learned here the last 4 yrs..This video is so SPOT ON ..its scary...(in a good way..lol) Thanks so much!!! Ill be comin back to this one often.

Great video Ken. When I first started singing in August 2020 I sucked!! My first voice lesson I couldn’t even stay on pitch on a simple lip trill or hum lol. I wanted to quit. I started off with an average voice at best and oh I was 21 years old. I thought “is it too late?” “Can i really even become a decent singer. I kept at it and every few weeks I would notice improvement, then it became every couple months and so on. Now I am pretty good vocally and have been since April 2021. I get told my voice is nice but most importantly, I see how much I improved . Just gotta have the courage to dig deep enough to keep going even if you think you suck. Just work on taking in and applying the right technique from your vocal coach. Practice the right technique 5-6 days a week for a year you’ll notice a huge difference! My biggest piece of advice is to make peace with the fact that if you didn’t have a decent voice before taking vocal training, there’s a pretty good chance you will suck at first😂. I won’t sit here and sugarcoat it. But I promise you with consistent, effective, and correct practice you will be MILES BETTER in no time. 💯

I have a simple piece of advice against the fear of singing, (mental exercise) Among the 50 listeners in garden pub, you will not find a single person who would venture on stage to give a similar singing performance. That means at that moment, that evening, you are the best of the 50 in singing. You are the winner even before firt note. And from such a first place, singing is much easier. Shortly. You will this evening sing better than anyone else around.

AS you Said, The quotes are For several Things in our lifes... But they're always true, No Matter in which area you use it.
But singers of Course need more or less Courage when they start to sing in Front of Others, i've experienced that myself

Thank you Ken, I didn't see this one when you dropped it. But I have wanted to do your course for a long time now. And a week ago, in December, because of what you did, you made it possible. And now at 58, loving music, loving singing, singing untrained ( and wrong & dangerous I've learned from you ) I am NOW one of your students : ) I am SO JAZZED about this, and this year, and all the possibilities they bring. It is never too late to pursue a dream, until our last day is spent. BUT, we never know when that will be. I lost a good friend in December. Our age. Unexpected. Why wait ? Life is now. "Later" might not be there as we, entitled and assuming, expect. Thanks Brother PR356, Mark

Thank you Ken. I needed this. I think I embarrass my wife when I sing but some people like it. I’ve been very discouraged lately. I think I’m just gonna go for it and let the chips fall where they may.

Thank you so much for making this video! - it helped me a lot today ✌️💛🌈
Edit: You inspired me to record a song for YT after 20 months of not feeling the courage to do it - your video gave me exactly the nudge I needed Ken - thank you so much. And I uploaded it today. It's not perfect, but I feel so happy that I've found the courage to keep going anyway! Appreciate you and your course so much.

This reminds of things 30 plus years ago. I had a great music teacher in HS and she wanted us to make big, loud, powerful mistakes! It also reminds me of Chris Cornell who I believe really internalized criticism of himself, especially about his live performances. He said that he never wanted to disappoint an audience. He toured constantly in many different projects. It must have been so grueling. I think I caught him using backing tracks a few times. Not totally lip syncing but just some pre-recorded tracks of himself to take some of the load off. I can't be sure this was even done, as it could be mismatched audio/video. But, I think it was happening, and I think Chris just hated it. I think he was very hard on himself, though I never doubted his efforts even on an off night. An off night for Cornell was like the best night for most folks.

Wow! You'r just amazing! I have always wanted to be a musician and play in a band since I was a kid and when I watch this, it makes me feel able to do whatever I want to, but I need some advice! How do me and my band develop and get better? I dont mean training, i mean how we can reach more people and get "famous". We want people to hear what we love to do.

I've been reading Steven Tyler's autobiography. Then I watched a couple of Dream On videos. Here's a young kid who just had the dream and basically faked it til he maked it. Dream On vocals aren't always perfect, but he puts his soul into it. Not to mention he wrote the lyrics. I also read Vince Niel, and Ted Nugent. A lot of times, it seems you just have to be down in the gutter broke (Motley, Aerosmith) and just keep striving until you break through some barrier.

Some good messages Ken, Fear is what Elites use to control people, cough... I know lots of Musicians and Singers now unemployed because of Fear, and young people not going into Music because they see no point, if you write songs against that Fear, they ban those songs. Yeah, Fear is a problem, people should learn to objectivise where that Fear is coming from, trust themselves, not those selling it, to quote a song, they are Prisoners of their own device. Keep at it Dude, have a Great New Year..

I really love your videos and I think you're one of the best vocal coaches out there! You should do 'What Makes This Singer Great!' about Little Richard or a voice reaction to the song 'Lucille' of Little Richard or to the version 'House Of The Rising Sun' of Geordie, Brian Johnson really sings wonderful in that song.

I'm just trying to keep a freakin band together. Most people have no idea how difficult it is to get the right guys and or gals together when your middle age to try to keep it together. People start off strong half a dozen rehearsals in all of a sudden WHAM! Sorry guys my workload is talking me outta this band. More turnover than a fast-food restaurant. 6 months in the making..2 bass players and now the guitarist. Now I have 2 bass players in the wings both ready to audition and no guitarist. And no its not my vocals, it's a lack of time and commitment by others...very discouraging.

I sing like shit but I sing all the time. I know I can't sing well, but I do it anyway. I follow all this advice and I'm still a musical failure, but I don't care. Music is too important to me to walk away from it for fear of being ridiculed or ignored.
