Out of stock I feel sad now for seeing this video lol
New batch will be soon back on stock, please check this this again time to time.
Same for me, i already bought uv k6 (k5 8 inside) justo for fun doing this. Thanks for the video
Its back in stock!
@@YU5KBM just purchased was shipped within hours.
The guys at Quansheng must love this - all the free R&D work being done by the community to help make the next version of their radio. Now if it had a more powerful CPU and support for Bluetooth for audio & 'CAT' control :-)
Hey this is what ham radio has always been about. I recall before I had my ticket that ham guys would be on the hunt for decent tube b&w TVs as there was a particular vacuum tube that was good for making a fairly good amp.

If Only Thats How It Worked. Sadly Its Not :(
@@frequencywatcherswe're not here for reality!
Besides, accepting reality as it is would be the death of homebrew stuff like this.
@@n7nja851 i mean, they will not make this mod in yhe next gen ht.
Not hapenin
I was holding my breath while you soldered that grain of sand - capacitor into position!
😆👍
Watched a few videos of this mod and decided to give it a try yesterday. I have a tweezer soldering iron which you can close on each side of the smd caps and resistors. This worked quite well but required careful placement as to not heat near by parts. I have a hot air gun that I planned to use on the eight pin IC removal but I was concerned that it might blow off the adjacent tiny parts. I used an exacto knife to score the leads at the package several times. You can press on the cut and snap of the leads. After that the remaining remnants can be easily removed with soldering iron. That tiny capacitor is smaller that I thought but I managed to get it installed. Happy to say that the mod is working. Thank you for the excellent video.
To remove these small smd, I slip a very thin wire under one of the sides (making a loop) and put some upward lifting pressure while heating the pins on that side (not too much or you will pull up the traces). The chip will pop up from that side, then the rest is easy. Doing it this way saves the chip for other uses (or reversing the mod).
Wow, amasing hardware and firmware mods. It totally changes the stock radio. Very cool, Paul. I dont know if i can do the soldering, but maybe I can find someone to do it for me.
Thanks for sharing, my friend.👍🤠🇦🇺
Good luck my friend with your own Quansheng. I hope you find someone who will help you! ;) Best 73!
Olá colega, estou no Brasil, como faço para adquirir esse kit? Tanks
He has a link to AliExpress in the description of this video.👌
@@machadomachado9224 Olá! Tem um link do aliexpress na descrição do vídeo. Não sei se tenho a habilidade para soldar componentes SMD tão pequenos, mas talvez tente.
WOW Beautiful work! I used to fix printers and servers back in the day, if my resource controller handed me a bag with those capacitors I'd have sworn they'd messed up as I'd never even see them! Truly beautiful work 😮
My eyes and patience are not what they used to be, or I would try this with one of mine. I like them so much that I want to keep multiple firmware's, so multiple radios. Thanks Paul.
Mr. Paul, your soldering skills are superb!
Thank you for compliment :)
@@OM0ETI think a needle tip and digital adjustable Weller station would have prevented that tracer burn error. just sayin.
I don’t think we watched the same video 😂
For low audio I would recommend to connect the audio not on pin 3.4 but after two resistors, I use to short those 😊
Thx, good idea! 73
Thank you! Could you send some sketch of this please? I would try it ;)
Yes, would love to see that sketch bc I'm too new to soldering board modifications so need all the help I can get, lol
Could you show me in more detail where to solder it? The video says it works for me, but I'm not sure what you're suggesting
dear friend, could you clarify for me what needs to be done here for louder audio?
Ah the surface mount. 20 years ago odd, working on this type of thing was my job. I gear due to my age and accompanying health issue my hands and eyesight are as focused and as steady as the once were. Great video.
Thanks for the comment James and for watching! :)
Me too, worked at one of the first places in the US doing surface mount, this was back in the days when the mask was for the glue that held the parts on so they could go through the old school wave soldering machine. I did a lot of rework but my god those parts have gotten smaller over the years. Amazing job with them considering the tools you are working with.@@OM0ET
Adjustable Hot air soldering station, HD overead camera connected to 24" hd display, laptop and a variety of surgical forceps, tweezers and white desktop that is nick, burn proof to decipher a dropped smd and a burn or flux drop.
Thanks for getting the whole modification process on camera. The light and angles let the viewer see exactly what has to be done to get the radio receiving HF!
I didn't know they already made a whole kit for the quansheng, I've been looking into it for quite a bit and I do have another UV-K5(8) coming in tbe mail, I will definitely do this now as I think having a small HF listener would be pretty awesome

I salute you for making a BRILLIANT video ‼️🙏
Such a gift ❤. Thank You 💐
Many thanks for compliment! :)
This is awesome! I have two of these radios, but plan to buy more, since they are so versatile. Thanks for the videos!
Thank you! Today morning I oredered another one too :D the UV-K5(99) Maybe topic for my next video :D
Great technique soldering the wire-strand jumpers while still connected to the wire. That seemed to give to make it easier to have the wire sheath to hold.
😉 ☝️
Thanks so much for the video. I just bought the board and it did not have any instructions. Now I can follow your video.
Yes, this was also the reason to made this video ;) Good luck with your radio! ;)
I have to say I was most impressed by watching this! Edge of the seat intrigued. :)
No way I'd try this myself, but it's great skills like that - who will get you some nice work.
Maybe even as a side "hustle". Just amazing!
I'll have to drop by the channel and watch some more, eventually.
Two thumbs up, and thanks for sharing this video tutorial !
Trafopajka pobavila, letovanie smd s tym kolom prekvapivo zvladnutelne. Tiez radsej letujem (s vyrazne mensim) hrotom ako s teplovzduchom. Dobra praca.
Amazing what creative and capable people come up with ... by the way you should have soldered the big resistor-alike looking inductor with shorter leads, which is one of the many reasons why everybody is using SMD technology, avoiding unnecessary cross talk - since it seems to be going towards ground it should be easy to do that.
Thanks for showing this so very well visually and verbally documented process - great work.👍
With all the extended wiring and with that additional capacities does it still operate on UHF without signal degradation?
I also love to tinker with radio related stuff all my life and that is why I smiled when seeing this, turning the cheapest Chinese FM radio into an all-mode HF receiver, though as a serious HF enthusiast you question yourself why not spend a few bucks more and get like e.g. a Malachite SDR or Chinese clone and also have a tiny portable HF receiver with serious performance for a device of that size and it is also capable op listening even up to higher frequencies. I guess here this is more a proof of concept that stuff like this, which was unthinkable 20 years ago, is now possible due to the digital backend, relatively capable processor/controller and most of all some very capable people who created these hacks showing us this new dimension of mods. 🙏
This definitely leads us to realize that there will soon be way more cool stuff to come ... like dedicated handheld transceivers that do all this with high dynamic SDR front-ends while being able to send AND receive from HF to UHF in all modes that will come close to the quality of big and heavy traditional transceivers.
These make a very handy handheld multi-band receiver and VHF/UHF transceiver for the price. They don't do anything better, (or as well,) but they sure do 'more' than other handhelds. Ultimately we will be seeing cellphones with 'all band' receivers and HF/VHF/UHF all-mode transceivers all together in one package. As in decades past, hams are pushing the technology envelope for new products. It's good to see.
Grettings Paul from Venezuela de YV2ESB, this video literally blew my mind 🤣
Hey friend! lol, thanks for watching and 73 to sunny Venezuela! :)
Very cool. I love the UV-K5/6. It's a bit of an expensive upgrade though. In my case, that chip board is half the price of what I paid for it. But I think i'll still give it a go. I wish someone would do some work on the firmware for the Quansheng UV-5R plus though because that radio is great. Super awesome video though, thanks.
Thanks, you make it look so easy, great job
Great video and love the Magnetic Loop antenna you have in the background.
Excellent video, really well produced. I really enjoyed watching it. Thank you.
I also thank you! :)
20 minutes + some Canadian dark rum after long exausting work day. Set your solder about 400C to remove old choke. Works like a charm. Don't need to remove screw, just solder the new choke closer to bttns and bend 45 degree to soldering point. Plenty of room there.
thanks for the video friend, i believe the next quansheng model will have the hf band standard in the radio menu....
Wow, that would be fanstastic! I would be the first who buy it :D Let's hope!
Nice job. You did it pretty well without any fancy micro-tools,
Thanks! ;)
Nice video. i heard my voice on 27:16 , 4L/SV8DJW . Thank you for copy me from 4L area . Georgia. 73
Excellent! 😀👍
Hello Paul,
thank you for the video. I bought that kit and installed it yesterday. Fortunately it's running but the capacitor was a real challange ( I needed 3 tries 😂). vy 73
Oh great! I am glad you did it! 😀👍
Veľmi zaujímavé, držím palce.
Many thanks and appreciation for your valuable efforts. We learned from you🙏👍
Thank you! I am happy that my video will help to someone ;)
I have two of these radio's now and what a bargain they have turned out to be, I paid £11 for one and £12 for the other and don't regret a single penny, after all what can you get for that money in our days.
I wish my nerves and eyesight would allow me to do this mod but at my age It is not going to happen, I hope some savvy person will start doing the mod for people or Quansheng themselves start doing the mod built in.
Great video and well done 73
Fantastic video! Thanks for sharing this Paul! Best 73, Ben de M7FRS
Jesus, you are a braver man than I! Haha. My eyesight could not cope with soldering any components that small.
Nice job though :)
Hey buddy, great video. I have a few questions for you. What firmware version are you using? Is there any effect on transmitting for the existing frequencies that this radio is capable of transmitting on? The aim for me is to have extended receive but retain full transmission capability. Can you do a video testing power and spurious transmission? Now that you have done the upgrade are there any lessons learnt I.e. any things you would do differently?
VHF/UHF is staying intact.
Thanks, Paul. Great video!
Fantastic guide! I will be following this as soon as my kit arrives :) Thank you :)
Anyway to modify the power output from 5 watt to 8 watt??
Also would like to know if there are and tx chip modifications..
Wouldn't mind if I could hook up my antenna tuner and use like the yaesu 817..
With the rx mod it is like the kenwood th-f6. .. with about a $300 difference..
Fantastic job, well done. A job normally done by robots.. 👍 👍 👍
Amazing tutorial, I followed each step and worked! I coudn't do it without your help. Thank you and 73 from Brazil, PY5LM.
Oh! Nice! I am happy that this video helped you to modify your radio! Enjoy it and 73 ;)
Great video, Paul! Very thorough description, and the images are very clear. I guess now I need to buy another UV-K5 and the mod kit! hi hi Andy - K0ALS
Nice job, but ill wait untill they produce an updated radio after they decide how much memory they need based on the various firmwares being produced.
Sd cards?
Well, that would be amazing, and it would be finally an answer to my calling for it for two years already. To have the VHF/UHF - AM/FM/SSB handheld transceiver! :) I hope they will finally start producing something like that. Best 73!
Nice mod 😊. Btw how efficient is the loop antenna? Is it only for reception?
I made thi modified MC-20 Magloop mainly for 6 and 10m bands for TX also, but I can very nicely listen also on the lower bands :)
Thanks 😊. Best 73s, sy1dal Jimmy
Would LOVE IT if you could do a video on adding a USB C back to the Quansheng UV 56 Plus. What do you think?
I wish I could still do fine soldering work. My hands shake too much.
Felicidades y mucho exito, saludos a todos en casa.
Hey José! Thank you very much! Also greeting to you and boys! :) Best 73!
Hi Paul
Great video,
Is 1khz the lowest tuning step in ssb this unit can do , or is there then a fine tune,
Thanks Dave 2E0DMB
Unfortunately yes, which is pity. Also 5kHz is missing... Need wait for the next fw update :)
Hi Paul
Thanks for letting me know
Thanks Dave. 2E0DMB
Thanks Omet I followed your guide and installed the Board I also have low.audio also 40 Meters RX seems deaf.
Wonderful Video you made and I really like it!
Thank you!
Will it transmit, all band all mode, or will it only receive as I would expect? Nice job, it's most definitely working!
Thanks! It will RX only on those HF bands.
Nice job, good luck.
Well done on a very neat job. You have great soldering skills. 👍
Thank you! 😊
This is simply superbb mod 👌👌
Excellent work and the teaching was perfect. I have one question left, what is the value of the resistance that goes in place of the shock (1k?) and the 100nf capacitor? and that. Thanks.
Спасибо за подробный рассказ, было понятно без перевода, буду повторять ...
AWESOME!!!
Great Content, Thanks!
Did you know UV K5 IJV 3 firmware is out!
Yes, I am testing it already :)

Thanks for the video it's a great hack. There should also be a hardware mod developped in order to clean out the harmonics in 2m and 70cm. In Switzerland it is forbidden to import it because of this bad transmission quality.
I would welcome it too ;) hihi
This is very interesting ! Good soldering work !

Good Job..
UV 5 R plus is the same??
Great Job Paul as usual! 73

Great video. Does this mod limit the device to only one specific firmware type/version? Also, if you have the instructions, can you post a link to them? I purchased the kit and would like to install it, but have some documentation to go by which is eaiser than following steps in an entire video.
Is the antenna switch between the original antenna and the new antenna you installed done automatically, based on frequency, or do you need to manually switch them using some sequence of keys from the firmware? Thanks
Thanks, I took your advice and ordered a kit from Ali.
Hola, muy buen video, gracias!!! te queria preguntar primero cual firmware instalar para que tenga todas las frecuencias? tu subistes 2, pero cual de ellas es?, saludos
Hi Paul are you able to transmit on them frequency’s ? De M0YQQ.
No. it's for RX only on HF
I've installed this board, but when I enter HF mode, I can't tune any frequency. Attempting to toggle the side up/down buttons to change the band just exits HF mode. Any ideas?
Excellent thanks
That's Fantastic 🙏
I'm impressed ⚡🙏⚡
IS there a shop that sales modified radio"s or radios with this module pre installed? I no longer hav steady hands to solder this into my radio :(
What amplification do you use? Specialty tools?
Pretty good work73
Hello could you tellme what value of The indoctor you out near The antenna please ....73.. thanks
Sorry, but what inductor you mean?
Hello, once again ,the inductor we welded on the antenna connector is ground of the quancheng uvk5. I've been watching the video you posted making the modification to the device. I'm subscribed to your channel. I also have one ,and I had a problem with the reception and when opening the device I detected this component (in smd) shorted
Hello Paul, I have to attempt this mod. I purchased it from AliExpress costing a total of Au$28. Not those tiny capaciter have a polarity??
I just hope I can do it! Thank you and all the best..
Well done. It would be great if the original factory produces a ht like that which is already QRV on 20m in SSB. how much TX watt comes out of that modified HT in 20m in AM or USB ? The reception on 40m LSB sounds detailed, similar to expensive HF amateurradios that have a higher dynamic range, amazing how much HF radio for that little price that modified Quansheng HF provides and on a hilltop there will be all DX to QSO, the small HT size makes it very convenient for that. how is the audioquality with headphones ? you have great manual skill to solder a capacitor tiny like a sandcorn like that, i guess that cam to enlarge the view helped with that soldering. you make interesting videos on amateurradio 👍
16:30 - there is never too much flux :) - regarding the 7MHz band i didnt know there are so many russians speaking english to each other.

Great work. A little too fine for my solder skill.
THANKS for the video! I am wondering if it will also work for the UV-5R PLUS model?
Great video. Beautifully done.
Very good video, do you have to have the stock firmware or can you put any firmware after the CEC_041.HF? 73s
Currently the only CEC firmware is available to activate this chip and its features.
Hello! You have Modification Module KIT schematic diagram?
I tried this modification, howevre when I try to enable the HF by holding 0, I get WAIT on the screen and the HT locks up, nothing else happens.
I tried FW 0.41, 0.5, 0.51 but all does the same. Any ideas as to why this is?
I've checked all soldering etc and it all looks OK
vhf uhf continues to work after modification?
Yes 👍

Can I know the DIP inductor coil capacity after removing the choke coil?
Must admit that mod is rather impressive. It's still a crap radio but the scope of the mod is impressive.
Well done! I respect professionals!
Very good video - thank you 😊
I admire your soldering skills. The GUI still sucks though - I can't imagine using it in the field. When will be the day when we can have a miniature SDR screen (Waterfall and Scope) for the main channel with scroll-wheels and tune knobs, + HF/VHF TX + GPS + flashlight + IP68?
Sooo… do you also loose the ability to transmit on the intended frequencies of the original radio?
Nah
VHF/UHF is intact
@@OM0ET thank you!
Why isn't the new choke SMD as well?
Donno
Dumb question, but why don't they sell this radio with the HF functioning with these parts installed?
Hi, congradulation good job, I hope Murphy did not interfere so often 😂
at 7'52" i can see you have grounded something in the middle of the flexcable pcb to the display. what is that for?
Yes, I know. It was a tiny piece of the wire from my previous project I was working on before this video :) It has been removed before battery plugged in :)
