Petrea volubilis - Fabulous Flowers Float and Spin in the Breeze

- Petrea volubilis is a purple flowering vine from Tropical America. It has rough leaves like sandpaper hence its common name Sandpaper Vine. It is also called Purple Wreath Vine, Queen's Wreath Vine or Nilmani.
My Petrea volubilis plant is regularly pruned to the shape of a shrub like a large bonsai.
Petrea volubilis flowers are very attractive to honeyeaters and nectar feeding insects such as bees and butterflies. Another common name for this plant is Butterfly Vine.
Petrea volubilis flowers have five sepals which form the calyx surrounding the corolla. The calyx persists on the plant after the corolla has fallen and the five sepals of the calyx contain the seed and when the calyx finally falls the seed is dispersed long distances as the calyx spins like a helicopter in the breeze.

I think I use to have this shrub years ago, I trimmed to different shapes but I have never seen them floating in the air.

This is marvelous!!!! Butterflies are so difficult to film and I suppose these flowers are not easy to track as well, but You did it fantastically! Did You film with the iPhone like You wrote me for other slow motion clips of Insects?
Yes, I did use the iPhone for the slo-mo clips. My Canon is good for telephoto and macro but it doesn't have a slo-mo option like the phone. I think it's good to use slo-mo on butterflies only when they are flying very close.

I tried all the options but I am not able to find a way to smoothly follow any Bird in flight avoiding the framing going a bit forward and then back. I like better Your Butterflies and these Flowers slow motion! ^ ^

@@MoreliaAustralia yes they are in NL and Europe. I haven't seen one yet. Our climate changed totally, we have heatwaves and winters are no real winters like when I was young.

That plant is a magnificent specimen and seeing the pollinators enjoying themselves was a beauty to behold. And seeing the flowers spinning like pinwheels through the air made them seem like drones hovering.

It looks great. Please share tips for pruning.
My tip for pruning is prune all the tips of the new growth when it is not flowering. This stops the plant from climbing all over the place and putting too much energy into long vinelike growth. The plant will then have more flowers and look more like a shrub than a vine.

@@MoreliaAustralia It's rare here in Pakistan. I have one but i am trying to train it into a shrub. Its still not that big but it flowers alot. Do you remove the remains of flower too or let them hang?

The flowers have a natural ability to spin in the breeze and this is an adaption by the plant to spread the seed. I used the slomo setting to film the spinning flowers and this makes them to appear to spin for a long time.
