  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The new 2013 Ford Fusion and the new 2013 Nissan Altima directly compete for the same car buyer. They are both four door mid-sized family sedans that have gotten bigger for 2013. They both get the exact same EPA MPG but that is where the similarities end. The Fusion we tested has a turbo-charged ecoboost 4 cylinder engine mated to a traditional 6-speed transmission and all-wheel-drive. While the Nissan Altima gets a bigger 6-cylinder mated to a CVT transmission. In another fun and informative 0-60 MPH TFLcar review, we compare both cars to see not only which one is faster but which one it the better buy.

Thanks for the nice comment. In most CVT cars, with paddle shifters and/or a sport mode, the engine will hold an rpm (usually, within the engine's power band) and the transmission will feel as if it's spooling up. Sometimes, this feels like it works the same way dropping into a lower gear does - but it's usually a simulation. Some people find it entertaining.

I never mentioned C/D. There are a multitude of periodicals, blogs and television automotive review shows that establish various parameters in which they test. No two are completely alike. We run both ways to see if there is a major variation and to try it in a different mode (paddle shifters, "sport" mode and whatnot). Our point is; we are showing a 0 to 60 mph time in harsh conditions. The Rockies are rough on all cars. If it does well here... you get the point.

  • @ChazBoppin
    @ChazBoppin 11 лет назад

I know what a CVT is. The thing is when you have this particular car in Drive Sport, you have to manually change the gears using the paddle shifters, if not the transmission will stay in 1st gear. When you change gears manually, which he did not do in the video, the digital display shows what gear you have changed into. If not it will just read Ds, as it did in the video, and will stay in 1st gear.

Hi, thanks for watching! Torque is the force that creates the twist that moves your wheels. Without enough torque, your engine has to rev its bolts off to get moving. You need torque to shred the tires and you need horsepower to feed the torque.

Theoretically it will hit a pinnacle point eventually with the effects of Moore's Law leading to smaller and lighter electronics as well as advances in materials and packaging technologies for every component of the car. Think of the new '15 F-150 and the new '16 Miata which are both lighter yet have more gadgets in them than their predecessors. There is hope so it seems a bit of a stretch to say it is not going to happen.

I still see most of these comments are about the assumption that American cars are unreliable. I don't get it. I am biased towards Ford products (obviously), but I have worked in several dealerships; Ford, Land Rover, Private shops and from what I have seen is that they ALL break. Land Rovers by far I have seen broken the most, but we took in trades on BMW's, Mercedes, Fords, Chevy's, Nissan's, Honda's, everything. They all were in no better shape than the others. Biggest enemy of any car is the owner. Don't take care of your car and it breaks eventually.
My 2001 Mustang was still going strong at 230K miles with the only major repair being a failed fuel pump. Was involved in an accident with it and it was totalled. Thats the only reason I'm not driving it now.

+Faerodyn Shepard But Daewoo makes cars for GM now. Of course they're pretty bad because GM produces crap. I saw how a 1993 Buick LeSabre was made and it was made in the most crappy way I've seen. My mom's 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis is an example of cheapness.
My family has owned cars from Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Nissan, and Toyota, and they have been exceptional. Ford, GM, and certainly Chrysler? Not so much, with Chrysler making the worst cars I've ever heard of. My grandma's 1978 Chrysler LeBaron caught on fire in a parking lot in Houston in 1982 and since discovering that plus other terrible experiences with Chrysler products makes me think even Daewoo made better cars than them.

I liked the acceleration of the 2010 Altima so much that I bought another -- a 2012 Altima -- when the 2010 was involved in a crash that totaled it (someone drove into my wife's lane).
My main issues with the Altima -- 1) the sagging of the back when people sit in the back seat; need to find a fix for that because it looks terrible and you get the feeling car will bottom out any second -- may try putting in Eibach springs as has been suggested on the web, 2) horrible driving in the snow with its stock Continental tires (which also wore out by 20k miles) -- last winter with only 12k miles on those tires I got stuck all over place while other sedans did not and were driving around me; am about to purchase new set of Goodyear Assurance TripleTreds.

I didn't have "problems" per se with my '10 Fusion, but every once in a while it would take a few seconds to go from reverse to drive and then BANG into gear when given the tiniest bit of throttle. There was also occasional slippage from 1st to 2nd, but neither one of these issues was a constant, nor particularly bothersome. Loved my '10 Fusion SEL, sold it to buy the wife a bigger SUV after baby #2 was born last year and still miss it.

It's a pretty good vehicle. The Dodge Journey and Durango are great choices, so is the Mazda CX-9 (sporty) and KIA Sorento (you get a lot for the money). The new Durango will have an eight-speed transmission and it should get great mileage. Hope that helps. Good luck!

I've driven both--am currently looking for a new ride. I drove a Fusion SE, Titanium, and a titanium hybrid. I also took a Nissan 3.5 and a 2.5 for a test drive. I know what the guys are saying...the Ford does feel a lot more substantial and better crafted than the Nissan. It's a billion times better looking, and I like the way the Fusion drove better. I couldn't tell whether the 2.0 was faster than the CVT Nissan or not, but 0-60 wasn't my first criteria. I'm still shopping, though.

I own a 2013 Ford Fusion. Test drove it and a 2013 Nissan Altima, and just overall loved the Fusion more. Even though the Ecoboost wasn't available in any of the 2013 models I checked out (all had the 2.5L 4 cylinder engine), it was still an amazing car to drive, and much more fun than the Altima in my opinion. MPG wise, I was able to make it from Jackson MS to Biloxi MS and back on a full tank of gas with the ability to go another 120 miles. Great MPG to go with a great car :)

Last year I was about to buy a Camaro SS. However, it was too "flashy" for where I currently live. I like tuning... The Fusion is a great platform if you like tweaking your engine. It is not "sport car" expensive and for around 4k you can get a damned fast car. I got mine @$34k instead of the Camaro (which was $50k), spent around $4.5k and a week in the shop... went from 240 to 450hp and got to 4.5" average in 0-60 runs... Bigger turbo, intercooler, cold air intake, all the pipings and a custom tune. Lowered it 1" and still looks kind of an everyday car but it surely surprises everyone when necessary... :)

We have a 2008 and a 2010 fusion and no problems with any of the transmissions. I don't think you are lying its just I have never experienced any problems with transmissions in any ford vehicles we have owned.

That's B/S. Guys... I believe if you ran both vehicles at sea level the Nissan would actually be a little bit faster but anyway both of these vehicles are family drivers I like both cars I own a v6 Nissan Altima 2013 and I can tell you it is faster than 7.8 from 0 to 60 but again like you gentlemen both mentioned this is real world testing. Great job as always

What AWD with manual where? I couldnt find one, what they told is AWD Fusion is available only in AT form and with 2.0 turbo,
The AWD of Fusion is a very heavy system and it makes the car damn heavy 3750+ pounds, the focus ST has just 3233(GPS 0-60 6.6s) pounds so it would have been better to avoid AWD weight and put some adaptive suspension based FWD differential to enhance comfort and handling, Fusion GPS 0-60 is 7.2s even after being an AT that shifts faster than manual Focus ST

What is sport mode on a CVT? It is supposed to simulate a regular automatic, or hold the rpms near the rev line?
Love your videos, and thanks for all the hard work you guys put into them.

I agree! I hate that the Fusion doesn't offer a V6 anymore, just like many family sedans nowadays. I currently drive a 2007 Altima & it's an amazing car!

I can appreciate you point of view. I still maintain that testing exactitude is a falsehood in this world. Our test is honest and simple. MANY automotive reviewers bend the rules as do some automakers. Nevertheless, I agree that our standard lacks technical precision - so do Roman and I. Thanks for watching! .

how does awd ruin it? I have the awd version and it really helps in the wet, and the snow. Plus the ford is the only one in the class with awd. And you can have it with a manual.

You could make a reasonable argument for buying either of these cars. They are giving Camry a run for its money and I don't see that stopping anytime soon.

    Nathan,
Does the Altima still have that low whining sound when turning the steering wheel when the car is stopped? I actually detected that noise on the car when I test drove it. I even noticed that the rear tail lights dim slightly when turning the wheel. I then got a job at a parking garage & noticed it a lot more among the dozens of Altimas in the rental fleet of the location I worked in. It appears that maybe the partial electric steering unit has a pretty high energy drain that the alternator can't give out. I also noticed the same thing on the Mazda 3. What do you think about that?
I definitely agree with you about Nissan making the best V6. It has been the ONLY engine (currently) to ever be listed in Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 6 years straight.
In my honest opinion about the naturally aspirated engines of the top 3 Japanese automakers, I believe in the following:
Honda - Best 4 cylinder (Ex: Honda Accord / S2000)
    Nissan - Best 6 cylinder (Ex: Nissan Maxima / Altima Infiniti G35 / G37)
Toyota - Best 8 cylinder (Ex: Lexus LS460 [Drool] / Lexus IS F)

why do people always go nuts about how these guys test their cars? be real. use your brain. its a great video meant to inform. that is all. they tell you how to correct for their times, they tell you when they are stating 'opinions' vs 'facts'. what more do you want? if you buy a car based on 1 video, you're just being misinformed.

Great review, only question; Did you guys turn off traction control in the Ford, and does the Altima have a similar option? The Fusion is a few ticks faster with TC off, I'd guess the Altima would be as well if it has a similar function.
Either way, you guys are entertaining to watch (likely cause I'm an old big pooh like you guys).

Thanks guys for your videos and your hard work, I really enjoy watching them. The videos have soul and are interesting to watch. CVT does suck and frankly don't get the idea of equipping the cars with it when you have really good automatic transitions or good old fashioned manuals.. The only question I still have is about torque and its significance to acceleration from 0 to 60. There's been lot of reviews and articles written on the fact that it's actually hp that matter for a quarter mile?

I have a new nissan Altima. And I went 0-60 in 6.8 seconds. Although I'm not a mile high either. But I love my nissan. It's quiet, it's powerful, and the seats or to die for. I give nissan two thumbs up on this car. :-)

I really didn't think that was a fair test. The Altima in sport mode did not change gears from 0-60 at all, but the Fusion changed gears. My over-all opinion is that the Altima would be faster if actually changed gears.

From the sounds of the mufflers, I don't think the 2.0 sounds too bad. Sounds pretty good to me. Of course a v6 will always sound better, but for a turbo 4 it sounded good.

By now i am 99.99% sure the Altima's CVT had failed at least once. Also, so little room in the back of the Altima, the Versa has more room!

    • @occckid123
      @occckid123 4 года назад

How about you add front and rear legroom combined. The Altimas front seat can be moved much further back in the tracks than the versa. The altima has more room than the fusion.

Currently, I have a 2018 Altima. It is a comfortable commuter car, decently stylish, great fuel economy, rides smoothly. On the downside, the options are few and overall it's a pretty mundane driving experience. My next car, crossing my fingers, will be a newer Toyota Avalon.

Nice review as usual , the 0 to 60 times are of little concern for this type of car .They are basically sporty looking grocery getters , The Fusion wins in my neck of the woods as all wheel drive can get you out of some pretty sticky snowy situations .
