  • Urban Knife Guy discusses Functional vs Lifestyle Urban EDC.
He defined functional EDC as gear that one will likely use on a daily basis, regardless of how the tools may look. Lifestyle EDC is heavily influenced by trends, fads or fashion and may not be necessarily practical as EDC gear beyond looking pretty.

What, no fidget spinners? THAT's lifestyle, for most. I do recognize that for some people it is necessary/functional.
I'm on the "elevated functional" trip. I carry a high-end multi-tool, a folder or fixed blade, and a flashlight. From a functional standpoint, the knife is redundant because my multi-tool already has a knife blade, and I carry a high-end one because it just WORKS. I've had enough experience with cheapo multi-tools, no mas. None of my stuff matches. I usually also carry a regular 3x5 notepad (or notecards) and a pen, often a pen I've made myself.

I carry a SAK Explorer in a Victorinox 4.0545 sheath for cleaner tasks like reading small print and clipping newspaper articles & coupons. On the other side of my hip I carry an old Leatherman Wave for dirtier tasks, and a MagLite LED XL50 for nighttime & lowlight conditions. The SAK magnifier and scissors and the Wave’s metal file/saw are my primary tools 👍

I understand people can take notes on their phones, and that it can be functional. I could never understand why someone would willingly place themselves at the mercy of batteries and electronics in that situation.

I divide it by an edc pouch (Mighty Pouch +) which is my wallet, cards and cash, a triple A flashlight, key fob, pen and notebook and a few personal items. I carry it everyday. The second category is a tool pouch, (Maxpedition Micro), which I may take with me when needed. It also fits in my pocket but is bulky. I try to have a quality tool for any situation. Otherwise I have on me an Apple watch and phone, folding knife and often a Leatherman multitool. Your mileage may vary.

I think the leather slip pouch sans spyderco is sufficient as well as the pouch based system of your DIY one. While the signal is a good multitool, it's heavy and not really pocket carry friendly.
Of the 3 I've mentioned I'd go with the leather slip and fine a way so add a sleeve so you can keep the swisscard with it.

I half agree about pen and paper. I got a medical condition, I need to type down appointments, of course I could use my phone but for some reason it is easier to remember when you have written it down on paper. The reason why I say that I half agree about your point about pen and paper is because they don't need to take pocket real estate, for instant, I got Keyport Pivot and their pen, meaning my pen is integrated with my keys and then I got Grim Workshop Credit card sized notebook in my Arc Company Boulder (small size) wallet, again without additional pocket bulk, since I already carry that wallet and key organizer.

I use regular Opinel No8 as ''clean'' knife for cutting food that I carry to work in my backpack.
It is small, very lightweight (45grams) and very handy and sharp.
As for urban EDC, it is either SAK or SOG PowerPint, depending on where I go.
Also I NEVER carry knife with lockable blade as urban EDC because it could be interpreted as weapon by police or anyone else.

I've carried a surefire flashlight (currently the ECDL1-T), a leatherman wave and where legal, a firearm, for 24 years. The only one I don't use many times a day, literally every day, is the firearm. I keep the blade on the leatherman razor sharp and haven't felt a need for a dedicated folding knife. Literally everything else is lifestyle carry and not functional. This is for urban/suburban EDC. Woods EDC is different.

I am used to traveling a lot (pre pandemic), so my load out needs to be bladeless. Currently I have a KeySmart key organizer with a couple tools on it, which makes it a sort of bladeless SAK. (Though I dearly wish Victorinox made better blade less options.) The scissors are fine if I need to cut things, just fold out the blades all the way and I have a straight blade.
I also have a small Maxpedition pouch in my other pocket. It mostly contains medications, a micro pen, floss, bandaids, and other odds and ends, plus a 3500 mAh power bank. In fairness I could probably fit everything but the power bank in an Altoids tin, but I want the power bank so I just fill up the rest of the pouch since I can. Though my new phone has much better life so I could potentially downsize.
What I use the most out of all that? My lactaid, when I am having dairy. :-) Realistically, that plus tiny scissors would be plenty for my needs 99% of the time. The rest just gives me comfort in exchange for weight.

I mean, its not much of a blade, but my wife and I travel all the time (domestic and overseas) with our SAK classics. We both keep them on our key chains, so maybe they get lost in the jumble on the TSA scanners. And they're not too expensive, IF they were confiscated. I've lost two knives walking through White House security, and that was annoying (I was stupid, I knew I can't bring knives to WH meetings!).

I like taking with me only the things I need, but that's the thing, you don't always know what you might need!
A multi tool and a light are the basic for urban EDC, a bigger knife might be for self defense or car accident when you need to cut a belt, or like pepper spray, you carry them even if you don't use them, because you don't know when you need them!
Same with pen and notebook, what if your phone breaks or runs out of battery and you need to take someone's phone number?
You are right, they are comfort items, you feel better having them, and as the saying goes "The best tool is the one you have on you the moment you need it!"
Also that mini elastic pouch you made looks cool, gotta find the tutorial video and put my sewing skills to the test!

I carry functional only. I have a SAK Bantam and a BIC lighter in my front left pocket at all times, and I have a Gerber Dime, a small OLight (forgot the model), a SAK alox classic (for the scissors) and a pill container (for aspirin and a $20 bill) on my keychain, which is a firebiner carabiner (that my daughter got me from the Joshua Tree National Forest gift shop!). But nothing matches and its all functional. I have a lot of flipper knives that I stopped carrying when I got the SAK Bantam (which I use every day).

cant recommend the style PS + bit holder mod enough. absolute EDC champion when paired with a knife. sadly it’s discontinued because LM wants you to only carry big, beefy tools.
I will say my only complaint about the smaller multi-tools is that they often don’t have clips and are easy to misplace, and keeping track of two tools can be annoying. I currently carry the LM Arc and think it’s great, but it’s a bit overkill. the perfect edc multi-tool doesn’t really exist imo. that’s why keychain tool + knife or full size multi-tool has been an EDC debate for so long

    Great video. The ones that puzzle me in the EDC community are;
    (1) Peoples obsession with carrying gear to start fires. When are people in this situation where they randomly need to start an urgent fire without proper gear?!
    (2) Peoples obsession with pliers. Exception for the trades perhaps (and they won't be using dinky keychain size pliers), but for most folk it's an utterly redundant tool outside of your home/garage, and inside of your home/garage you'll surely have a proper pair of pliers not far away!
    (3) EDC coins. Just why?

I think the usefulness of pliers would be highly dependent on what your every day looks like. For my every day, I use the pliers in my leatherman wave more than even the knife blade. But I'm also doing a lot of hands on work, fixing things, building things, etc... where pliers make life so much easier. (I don't work in the trades, but am pretty handy frequently do things that those in the trades would do.) I even used my pliers once at my daughters dance competition when she was little. One of the girls had a nail coming out of her tap shoes and it had to be removed. No one had any tools or any way to fix it. My leatherman pliers made easy work of removing the nail, allowing her to perform her tap dance in the competition.
I do agree though, the dinky keychain pliers are a joke and a waste of space. That's lifestyle so you can "look cool" but are not functional in anyway. I'd argue they are actually a negative since you would "feel" prepared but your tool is inadequate for almost all jobs.

Long ago i was going to get one of those scalpel type replaceable blade knife they boast for hunting but for the price and function that Milwaukee give you a tool with multiple functions
      Utility blade
      Bottle opener
      Wire or rope cutter
1/4” Bit driver which allows you to carry extra screw heads or 1/4” drill bits its a game changer
Also its best for each item you carry to have multi use when building your kits
Also since your a knife guy get your self a boker dvalin tanto and get a tech lock and carry it apendix left you will thank me
      Its the best defense option
      No mapping
      Super stout knife
Your hands rest right on top up it and always at the ready

@@urbanknifeguy Oh, I agree! It's definitely not as universal as most people think, and I'll certainly check that video out.
My main take away from the quote is to get creative. You can use less tools for more things if you experiment with different ways of using them. Like you could theoretically use a knife for more than just cutting tasks, such as: prying, screwing, hammering, splitting, etc. So all tools can theoretically have function beyond their intended one, which means a single tool could fill multiple roles in your EDC.

I just carry a knife in my pocket. I have a backpack whoever I go to put stuff inside like groceries. I usually have bike tools inside of it.
If I'm at work I'm pretty sure my air tools could mess someone up pretty good or maybe a drill or a hydraulic press.

    • @madtownangler

I go to a lot of places where if I were to carry a gun or some sort and they demanded to look at my backpack I'd end up going to jail but a small pocket knife they wouldn't care about.

People changing their EDC in their pocket isnt really called EDC.....if you rotate carries, i have heard this term from a wise man on youtube before but i forgot his name, EDS (Every Day System)

    • @urbanknifeguy
      @urbanknifeguy  5 месяцев назад +1

I believe that was Dave Canterbury. Well technically, EDC just refers what to what one carries everyday. So one can technically rotate the items in their EDC loadouts. But it is semantics. Thanks for the comment!
