  • Johannes Vermeer: A collection of 41 paintings (HD)
    Description: "Johannes was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. Vermeer was a moderately successful provincial genre painter in his lifetime. He evidently was not wealthy, leaving his wife and children in debt at his death, perhaps because he produced relatively few paintings.
    Vermeer worked slowly and with great care, and frequently used very expensive pigments. He is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work.
    Vermeer painted mostly domestic interior scenes. "Almost all his paintings are apparently set in two smallish rooms in his house in Delft; they show the same furniture and decorations in various arrangements and they often portray the same people, mostly women."
    He was recognized during his lifetime in Delft and The Hague, but his modest celebrity gave way to obscurity after his death. He was barely mentioned in Arnold Houbraken's major source book on 17th-century Dutch painting (Grand Theatre of Dutch Painters and Women Artists), and was thus omitted from subsequent surveys of Dutch art for nearly two centuries. In the 19th century, Vermeer was rediscovered by Gustav Friedrich Waagen and Théophile Thoré-Bürger, who published an essay attributing 66 pictures to him, although only 34 paintings are universally attributed to him today. Since that time, Vermeer's reputation has grown, and he is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age."

    It's crazy that we can see within 3:37 minutes paintings it took that man about 23 years to paint altogether. This is real privilege - most of us, 60 years back, would not have been able to see all the originals somewhere and not all of us would have bought or borrowed an art book containing prints of the paintings!

    It's always nice to find a few previously unknown paintings of a great master, right? So I got really excited to see this promising title of 41 Vermeers. But here's the problem... The first one and the last 3 paintings are by Han van Meegeren. Saint Praxedis is of disputed attribution for the last 8-10 years, and Girl with a Flute is on the same list for the last 3-4 years. But even counting those two canvases Vermeer's entire known oeuvre consists of 36 paintings. So even with the 4 by van Meegeren it comes to 40. Great job.

      The last 3 paintings in this clip are van Meegeren's too, but he never sold them and they were found in his studio after he was caught. The first one here as well as his other famous forgeries were painted in supposedly early-vermeer style of which the only known sample is Christ in the House of Martha and Mary. So there was not much to compare with. And he was a good copyist and a good painter in his own right. No wonder the public took the bait.

    "A prophet is without honor in his hometown" (Mark. ch. 6). This is very true for such masters as Vermeer and van Gogh. Poor Vermeer was never recognized during his life, neither van Gogh. False artdealers even changed his signatures to Rembrandt so that they would sell!! As for van Gogh, we all know his tragic story... This shows that a true artist paints because he HAS TO, an urge from within himself, not because of vain glory, vanity or deceit.

    Im glad he used this mirror technique to paint (even if it diminishes his artist cred) because its like having film footage of the distant past...so immediate and sharp .like we are right there

    • @dianeshelton9592
      @dianeshelton9592 15 дней назад

      It doesn’t diminish his artistic cred , where on earth did you get that idea?
      It is a theory that he used a camera Obscura but still only a theory. Never completely proven However that really doesn’t matter , however he achieved that photo realistic quality
      It
      What makes him a grandmaster and what no one else was doing was mastering the use of light like he did. That’s what everyone admires the most about his paintings is the quality of the light which no one else for his time had mastered.
      If you standing in front of a Vermeer it almost glows, The lady with the pearl earring is really quite a small painting in the Louvre however it stands out even amongst other grand masters because the canvas seems to glow with the reflected light on those wonderful pearl earrings.
      He used the most expensive pigments and it shows, he even used ultra marine , one of the most expensive pigments , as an underdrawing and that helps with the quality of his paintings.

      @@dianeshelton9592 I appreciate everything you said and understand that he was a genius and a master. Still it doesn't negate the fact that if he was doing something that he wasn't sharing with the world as to a technique but yet going about like he was free handing the whole thing that obviously is a bit different.. the artist using whatever they use as a technique is fine as long as they are not pretending they are doing something they're not in order to get more praise

    • @dianeshelton9592
      @dianeshelton9592 13 дней назад

      @@richeneflowease3622 I think you are missing the point still. The same accurate photo realistic look can be achieved by using the grid system. Which even Michelangelo, and his apprentices were using on the roof of the Sistine Chapel. We know about that now because we can see the under drawing and the grid lines.
      Michelangelo didn’t go around advertising that he used a grid system. Does that diminish your appreciation of him because he effectively drew by numbers.
      You can see on Vameers paintings a series of dots that he could have used to effectively draw by numbers, the same as Michelangelo.
      I feel your hang up on the technique that was used to achieve a photo realistic effect on paintings weird.
      It’s not simply the drawing that makes a grandmaster it’s the composition, the quality of light, the choice of the subject matter etc etc that are all equally important.
      To be honest I know of very few painters that used free hand drawings and some of those are awful painters.
      I can draw extremely accurately free hand but I will never be recognised as anyone special as I fail on choosing a good composition and subject matter.
      That doesn’t matter to me as I paint because I want to paint. If for some reason in 400 years someone looks at a painting of mine, realised I drew it completely free hand would you say I was a genius because of my ability to draw freehand.
      Honestly your hang up is stopping you appreciate great art.
      Many painters used many different techniques. It doesn’t diminish their work as a whole.

    The paintings that show Vermeer's compositional ability, really stand out. I am not convinced that all these paintings are by Vermeer. But, then, he appears to actually been a picture dealer, rather than an artist, and maybe the less impressive pictures were done when he was not really concentrating.
