Description: "Rembrandt van Rijn, in full Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Rembrandt originally spelled Rembrant (born July 15, 1606, Leiden, Netherlands-died October 4, 1669, Amsterdam) Dutch Baroque painter and printmaker, one of the greatest storytellers in the history of art, possessing an exceptional ability to render people in their various moods and dramatic guises. Rembrandt is also known as a painter of light and shade and as an artist who favoured an uncompromising realism that would lead some critics to claim that he preferred ugliness to beauty.
Early in his career and for some time, Rembrandt painted mainly portraits. Although he continued to paint-and etch and, occasionally, draw-portraits throughout his career, he did so less frequently over time. Roughly one-tenth of his painted and etched oeuvre consists of studies of his own face as well as more-formal self-portraits, a fact that has led to much speculation.
The core of Rembrandt’s oeuvre, however, consists of biblical and-to a much lesser extent-historical, mythological, and allegorical “history pieces,” all of which he painted, etched, or sketched in pen and ink or chalk. Seen over his whole career, the changes in Rembrandt’s style are remarkable. His approach to composition and his rendering of space and light-like his handling of contour, form, and colour, his brushwork, and (in his drawings and etchings) his treatment of line and tone-are subject to gradual (or sometimes abrupt) transformation, even within a single work. The painting known as Night Watch (1640/42) was clearly a turning point in his stylistic development. These changes are not the result of an involuntary evolution; rather they should be seen as documenting a conscious search in pictorial and narrative respects, sometimes in discussion, as it were, with his great predecessors.
Rembrandt quickly achieved renown among Dutch art lovers and an art-buying public for his history paintings and etchings, as well as his portraits and self-portraits. His unusual etchings brought him international fame during his lifetime, and his drawings, which in fact were done as practice exercises or as studies for other works, were also collected by contemporary art lovers.
According to the myth that evolved after his death, Rembrandt died poor and misunderstood. It is true that by the end of his life his realism had been supplanted by Classicism and had become unfashionable in Holland. Nevertheless, his international reputation among connoisseurs and collectors only continued to rise. Certain artists in 18th-century Germany and Venice even adopted his style. He was venerated during the Romantic era and was considered a forerunner of the Romantic movement; from that point he was regarded as one of the greatest figures in art history. In the Netherlands itself, his fortunes have once again risen, and he has become a symbol of both greatness and Dutch-ness."

Important to note that at present only 324 paintings are attributed to Rembrandt, according to the most recent painter's catalog by Ernst van Wetering, so many of the images seen in this video belong to Rembrandt students (such as Gerrit Dou), to his school or to followers and imitators.

Rembrandt still part of the old School of Sepia washes, then painting. Mostly with exception dark to light. But what a Light! !! No , one in portraiture past , or present can come near him. Here you have the Art of psychology before the term was invented. But the women were, if flirty , Noble. Men, had his Shakespearian insight into the human condition, in all it's ranges. His most powerful works are his biblical references, played to both past and present. He was also a Gravure/ engraver artist. Most artist , like Leonardo da Vinci, and he, some french an German artist, explain their mastery of light and dark. Working in line ecthing mediums. Is an immense teacher of light! I had the opportunity in my masters research to actually sit with some off his etching relief prints. It was a immense almost religious experience. One his work off very proper for Christmas , Christ rising from his grave! The other his birth. Even the least little line ,or tone was exactly where it was meant to be. So grateful to have had the privilege to view his engravings, and some of his paintings. The corpse of the slayed calf, a late work , could predicate what he could have accomplished as a abstract artist. Yet, you could say some off his Biblical works could be termed the abstraction of human nature. He was not just an Artist but a seer. With the way he used the White colors to sometimes reflect the portrait observed was ingenious. One off the finest Artist off all times.His landscapes incredible, up there with Winslow Homer. Why, with so Manny portraits did he remain in modest income. He was unable to pretend what he saw, not a man of flattery. Only a truly Patrician could appriciate that kind of insight. Most was vain. At least 40% of these paintings are not Rembrandt's. I counted 4 painting by one of his talented students, Carel Fabritius. Probably 15% of these painting are Italian along with another 15% by English artist. Do your homework.

The headwear in the portraits is worth a study in itself, as are so many other aspects of the paintings.

This boy was BAD ASS, he put out such great quality of shade and color. Its a shame and a surprise that he was broke in his latter years. One of my favorite oil painters, wish I could stay home every day and paint my oil paintings :)

There is something interesting in Rambrandt paintings
You feel he was drawing in ease,fine,effortless strokes of brush
But in the same time it is very difficult to mimic him
Dark backgrounds and delighted objects

There are a few paintings here that arent done by Rembrandt but it make the ones that are, seem even better.

Includes a disproportionately huge number of doubtful and patently false attributions stop it. No identification of titles or owners. The incessant repetition of the piano selection is at best wearing after about the second time, and is often at odds with the pictures shown. On the whole a dis-service to Rembrandt and his art!!!!
According to recent research, "The man with the golden helmet" at 11:52 is not by Rembrandt.
41:53 the sleeping dog, jug with a broken top---only Rembrandt could have pulled that off; excruciatingly exacting detail combined with unmatched, serene beauty. I've been painting on and off for fifty years, painting is not easy, it's a literal fight all the way right down to the varnish. Rembrandt painted real people with thoughts and emotions .... not just cheap and stale portraits.
It's very strange to me that 99% of his paintings are lit from his left. I haven't watched the whole video but it is amazingly consistent. Is this the way he thinks or something?

becoz., Our eyes tend to read everything from left to right. It also applies on painting. U can try .. try flipping pictures, lit from left always looks balanced.
It's called "Rembrandt lighting". Used by artists and photographers to create portraits. Use one light source. At a 45 degree angle, so one side is lighted and an inverted triangle of light falls on the opposite side under the eye, but not below the nose. The light can be be diffused with a simple white sheet in front of the light for a softer, feminine look. A window above eye level does the trick. He probably saw this in his studio, and saw how it gave a dramatic and dimensional look to the sitter. He didn't invent it, but everyone else followed his lead.

I think all these replies are incorrect. The answer is probably far less convoluted, he probably just sat his subjects in his studio next to a window which produced the light source on the left.
Although the trappings are different the light that shines through the eyes is the same light that shines through the eyes of people today.
Rembrandt ruined me. I love to draw. I have loved paintings from even before I can remember. I was in my teens... then again later in my twenties... when I had grand dreams of making the greatest paintings. I looked at his paintings and was crushed. I can never even come close to him. O' there are many masters I can never get close to... but Rembrandt is ruthless. He is not the most romantic but most thorough in achieving originality through his Genius.

Then don't try to come close to his style, go far away from it and find your own, and then maby in the near future people will say "wow I could never do that!"
Don't compare yourself to other's. If you are an artist you will do it regardless of other's. Comparing your work to some of the greatest painter's of all time is foolish and gets you nowhere.

According to a web site on Rembrandt this painting was paid for by a rich person, and it is almost certain (according to the web site) that it is supposed to depict Alexander the Great.

Nice video, but sadly, many of the paintings are not of Rembrandt van Rijn. Just one of such examples is this in minute 21:57, Bathsheba by Willem Drost en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willem_Drost. You do not need to lump together many unrelated paintings to lure viewers, especially with Rembrandt's rich production. Shameful.

If you raise a child with Mozart playing in the background and this video (NOT it's soundtrack) playing on the screens that surround him, you will simply get a better human being.

I'm fascinated by the incredibly elaborate clothing worn by the wealthy/elites of his time. I guess when everyone has to dress in such warm thick clothing a lot of wild fashion ideas can come up.

I draw portraits so I use here how could he captured the accuracy of the light where they didn't have the photographs as today's most established artists use? All the details and composition. I would just go back and learn from him, how he mixed the paints, light and dark, composition. Now that art is dead.

I am left handed who are the left handed Artists? So I don’t feel alone.
A few I've heard of : Rembrandt, Paul Klee, Lautrec, Lucien Freud, Holbien, Rubens and DaVinci was ambidextrous, Michelangelo is rumored to be, but he was probably also ambidextrous. Lefties make up about 10 to 15 percent of the world population so probably 13% of the Masters were too.
