This song just expresses "the end of the game is near" so well. Plus, having to hear it for 30+ minutes while you traverse the long, final treacherous obstacles before Specter, in space! This game is definitely and forever will be gold in the archives.
This game will forever have a bery special place in my heart. It just takes me back, especially with the hopeful and uplifting tone of this soundtrack. Been seriously thinking about revisiting this game as of late also.
Holy words. It feels like "the Odyssey is coming to an end". Spike, the hero, is approching the main antagonist, and this song as you said expresses that magical feel of a very long joureny from prehistoric times from the first lvele, especially with the fact you must hear it because the level is hard and tests all your abilities you learned from the beginning.
I love your take on this song! You never realize how impactful things are in the moment. I had this game when I was 5 or 6 years old. Now, I'm 29, and I hear this song in my head when I'm wrapping up an MBA assignment or closing out another month in my accounting career. It'll always be with me.
@@doug366665 I think that the first Ape Escape was designed to show off the functionality of the PlayStation controller's (new) dual joysticks. It would make sense to release a PS5 version showing the best of haptic feedback.
Agreed. I miss Ape Escape. We were also robbed of so many great games as well, as some of the better games of this series weren't even localized here in the states.
I remember it like yesterday. I still remember the first time hearing this music and making my way up on the space station castle to get to Spector back in 99. The first game to actually utilize the analog stick on the ps1 controllers.
Would you believe me if I told you I used to hate this song when I was a kid? (I was stuck on this level for so long my first time through, so this got stuck in my head in the worst possible way lol)
20 years later, and this song STILL gives me goosebumps. This was the second game I stayed up nearly 24 hours playing, just to complete it twice, with Metal Gear Solid being the first. Fuck, I feel so old now!
My favorite track from my favorite PS1 game. Ape Escape 1 is all that makes a good game! Good story, well written and well performed manuscript, good cinematics and animations, fascinating graphics, weird/fun/creative elements, good soundtrack, not too slow and not too fastpaced, NO BUGS (unbelievably right? It's true..), replay value is fine, I just love this game. It makes it to my top 10 favorite videogames of all time.
After some levels when the Game tells you: catch Specter Now finally here you must catch It XDD I think I was losing my mind with this Game... So great!
I cant believe that after all these years after playing Ape Escape this song has been seared in my brain this whole time. I love this track so much. It really does give you the vibe that you're close to the end.
The most controller throwing inducing part of the entire game. I remember getting so upset about not being able to do the massive gauntlet climb after so many tries. Something interesting. During the gauntlet climb section where this music is playing (you have to jump over the three rotating disks, with the spinning chain ball, climb the retracting stairs, and move the platform with the RC Car), if you use the slingshot glitch to get super high, you can see a section of a previous area, as it's used for the camera shot where the painting opens.
That guy's actually really easy if you just hit him then IMMEDIATELY use the Sky Flyer to move up when he counters with the flamethrower. Rinse and repeat.
These games were projected in a time where many people never played videogames, included us born in early 90's. At that time everything concerning videogames world, especially the first real masterpieces of ps1, were perceived in a different concept of space time and brain perception, and much more if you was a child, like many here. The true essence of millennial generation.
This game was such a huge part of my childhood, and the OST was one of those that really shaped my music tastes whether I realized it or not. The whole stage of Specter Land was terrific, just one of those long-haul stages that felt like it would NEVER end, which made me even more determined to fight my way through and get those monkeys, and the payoff for finally reaching Specter was actually well-done and worth it... damn I miss those days sometimes...
Man, I COMPLETELY forgot about this track at the final stage! I was so elated I started Jungle Stepping...I haven't Jungle Stepped since the year Nation closed close to ten years ago lol #OldDudes
If two 3d PS1 games are to be held as rivals for super mario 64 I'd say its its a tie between Spyro the dragon and Ape Escape. Crash bandicoot isn't bad, its just mostly on a track, Still like it though.
Same bruhh those fucking robots tho, the height at this level gave me goosebumps and that view to the earth really makes you think you are in space....
It was so rewarding getting to the very top of this level as a kid. All those giant machines were a pain. My favourite part were the monkey eyes that grew out of the wall though when you used your club.
I captured every monkey, got every Specter coin, but I couldn't complete more than maybe a couple time trials with top scores. That really frustrated me XD
It's actually so good that I just put this in my 800+ DnB RUclips playlist. Never played the game and never owned a playstation but damn this soundtrack is amazing. I should give the game a try one day.
I just beat this game (all monkeys collected) and its become one of my favorite 3D platformers ever. The level design, the creativity with the controls, the music, hell even the wacky story all worked as one so damn well. It's like an orchestra where everyone in it is playing their instruments in perfect unison. Like a piece of art. Sad how games like fucking Crash Bandicoot, one of the most uninspiring and boring platformers ever, get love over something this brilliant.
That line about the free demo takes me back, lol. Those were the fucking days man. Be nice if companies had those kinds of sponsorships, and incentives to customers today.

That is why we want to make all the characters look as realistic as possible. Also, we would like more blood and gore effects. Gotta make the game hip for the new players, if you know what I mean." SCE: "Those are terrible ideas." Sony: "Fine then, there shall be no Ape Escape 4 on the PS4. Furthermore, we shall nerf Spike in SPASBR...again." SCE: "You know what? We don't care! We're just going to make a spiritual successor as an indie game! SCE out, PEACE! *as rep leaves* Can somebody sign me up for a Kickstarter account?"
you know after dying a lot at this part (I was 8) I found this music a little annoying... about as annoying as the entire segment honestly... but after listening to it again... it is a nice composition
PS1 games were like "so long" in our child minds. But the ost were perfect for every level. Every soundtrack of ps1 masterpiece games is perfectly matched with levels and situations. Think at MGS for example.
This is where PS1 music reached it's peak.
Its Peak Point Matrix 😉
Ps1 had the best music
For a game all about catching monkeys this game really knew atmosphere and tension.
Agreed. So simple, yet went so hard. Especially its soundtrack.
This actually is the part where AE fans like 1st game most - It knows when to get serious

i like how this music didnt start right away as you entered the level, only after the monkey pressed that button and the alarm went off
I think this game's OST is the reason why I like dnb today. I loved just listening to the beat as a kid.
Any recommendations to any bands or songs that sound close to this ost?
lol late reply but check out Squarepusher - Beep Street
the album Hard Normal Daddy is very similar to the OST
old games had really good dnb tracks...1080 snowboarding OST was lit too
this game and Asterix & Obelix XXL
This song was the beginning of my drum and bass obsession
🙌🙌
This game did it so well. My love for drum and bass may have originated from this game as well.
The first Ape Escape definitely deserves an HD Remake! 😍
Why not remake the trilogy for ps4 like crash and spyro? And put ape escape racing (PipoSaru Racing PSP) as unlocked? Sounds good right?
@@doug366665 I think that the first Ape Escape was designed to show off the functionality of the PlayStation controller's (new) dual joysticks. It would make sense to release a PS5 version showing the best of haptic feedback.
Sadly that’ll probably never happen. Japan Stuidio has been shut down 😢
I really wish they could remake this game, it's an amazing gem 💎
Facts!!!
This series MUST come back. This song fills me with happiness.
Ape 4 with online multiplayer akin to Friday the 13th gameplay. imagine, now that would be a good use of billions! Dubai was such a waste.

Explosive rounds for the slingshot come handy there and only there.
