  • Overlanding has a growing following and everyone thinks you need the biggest and meanest rig to get out and explore. How does the Toyota Highlander compare to the 4runner when looking at all the factors that go into picking an overland rig?

    I just bought a 2012 Highlander Base with the tech package, cold weather package and tow package. It has 90,000 miles on it. I couldn't be happier with it. I look forward to seeing what you do with your Highlander. Thanks for the content.

    Bought a 2013 limited one year ago. This is exactly my vision for the upgrades. I love my highlander. Hopefully, starting a lift, spacers, tires, and rack. Great job, and I enjoyed videos!

    Hey, I came from your FB post in the group. I agree with all of your points, and its ironic because I've owned my 2010 Highlander for a year now and I'm actually looking to upgrade to a 4runner cause I'm ready to spend to Toyota Tax and go further with modding. Great video!

    • @ThisWeeksWander

      Thanks for the comment! That is exactly the point of this video. For some, the highlander doesn't cut it and 4runner could be a better option. For me, I needed a more specific, true all purpose vehicle for cheap, and honestly as great as the 4runner is, I still think the highlander fits "all purpose" a little better when considering on road manners. Most people over build the 4runner for looks, and that is ok, but I haven't found anything that a stock 4runner can do that my highlander couldn't and mine is on a small lift and ATs.

    Nice video! I am the one that has (probably) the only diff locker installed on the 2nd gen.
    Since installing the locker, the rig has become one of the most capable awd rigs out there.
    I love my HL. And love its looks. I keep wanting to get into a full size truck since i am knee deep already into this HL, but some things keep holding me back from selling the HL.
    Good seeing you on the fb group, and look forward to more content.

    Great video, subscribed. Im in the market for a 4runner in Canada and the prices are nuts. 200k+ kms selling for 30k+ for 2013+ models meanwhile highlanders with less than 150k kms are selling for under 20k. I like your setup, gonna maybe look into getting a highlander and throwing some money on a lift kit, better tires and wheels, applecar play headunit and some HID lights. Might even look badass! haha

      I love it! Id take a built out highlander over a stock 4runner all day. You can have a super clean built HL for under 15k if you find some deals. Im into mine 17k total and its a 2013 Limited with just over 100k miles

    I’ve got an 08 highlander that I got at a steal of a price. Couldn’t be happier with it. I don’t go on extreme trails, I don’t cross rivers, or go rock climbing with it. But I take it on trails through mud, snow, gravel, you name it. And it handles it like butter. I’d honestly even go as far as to say I enjoy taking it out more than my 2010 Outback. I’ve got a 2” lift and some off road tires on the highlander and it’s a dream. My only qualm is that it’s a slept on car. There’s not enough aftermarket parts and mods for it like there is for rav4, 4Runner, or a Subaru. But it’s a solid car

    I have always been a Tacoma/Land Cruiser guy and was pretty smug about the other Toyota vehicles, kind of a jerk about it actually. When my son turned 16 I bought a 2007 RAV4 Limited V6 for him to drive and then when my daughter turned 16 I bought a 2008 Highlander base model for her to drive. Both cars were bought from very good friends and are low mileage one owner cars that we bought cheap. Both have been incredible and I think for anyone looking to explore on weekends, camp, and have a reliable vehicle to drive these are both amazing options. I see no reason why either one wouldn't be a great choice to drive to South America and back, especially the RAV4. They sell that car almost everywhere!

    • @ThisWeeksWander
      @ThisWeeksWander  4 месяца назад

      I agree 100% I was the same way thinking the 4Runner and Tacoma were the only good option. I feel like the highlander has been in the shadows and people really don’t know how great they can be. There are obviously pros and cons to every setup, but like you said, the HL can be a really nice reliable first car, or it can be a cheap reliable alternative for overlanding.. really it can be used for so much more that most think. Tow capacity is better than 4Runner too!

I assume you're pleased with the rack?....I like how low-profile it sits/works with the OEM rack. Thanks in advance! 🙂

    I have a 2019 highlander I’m going to put a 2 inch lift kit from torque engineering on soon. Just hit 60k miles with no issues and pulls a small trailer just fine! I get 26mpg on the freeway, which the 4Runner will never get close to. Highlanders are definitely a better deal at the moment if you’re willing to build it out. Much comfier ride overall too.

    • @ThisWeeksWander
      @ThisWeeksWander  4 месяца назад +1

      Exactly. I feel that a highlander on 1.5" lift and ATs will do everything off-road that a stock 4runner can do, as well as outperform on comfort and MPG all at a fraction of the cost. Its a great alternative option!

    As a Kluger (another nomenclature for Highlander) owner down under in Australia, I wish there are enough experts in Australia that offer these upgrades and products for their Highlanders but also offer a long range fuel tank (extra 70 litres would be nice) and a rear bumper that holds the spare wheel.

    Great video, I’m running a 2013 Honda Pilot…it’s huge! Great box shape, no AWD though. I mostly plan to be on paved roads and at most a fire road on occasion. Currently running an ikamper sky camp and front runner will build me a rack. Hope on not naive to think this is viable for mostly road trips and common camp spots. I haven’t seen to many threads on the pilot but I imagine it’s comparable to a Highlander in some respects.

      @ThisWeeksWander  4 месяца назад

      Thanks for the comment! Seems like a small lift and some ATs is all it takes! I do average more like 20 with my driving style, But I have gotten 22mpg on longer trips (some on dirt, some on pavement) where I'm just cruising along at higher speeds and low RPM. A whole lot better than my old 4runner's 12mpg for sure.

      Im just busting your balls. It was right there and I couldn’t resist. My best friend drove Jeep Cherokee’s (mid-late 90’s style) for years. They were basically tanks with the inline 6. I am running a Nissan Xterra off-road at the moment… I do also own a 2011 Sienna minivan that has been insanely reliable for the 170,000 miles we have put on it (has 201k total).
