For the price of the Trailhunter you should really consider the GX550 Overtrail. Higher quality interior, better engine, better dealer experience, longer warranty, just as capable.
I think you have to consider that you are getting a lot more for the money-and the Overtrail starts at $69,250, or less than $1,000 more than a Trailhunter. If you’re spending $68,350, another $1K for a shouldn’t matter to you. If it does, you need to reconsider the purchase. Also, for what it’s worth a base GX550 premium starts at $64,250 or $4K LESS than a Trailhunter.
Once the early adopters get their new 4Runners and they start stacking up on dealer lots alongside the Tundra and Tacomas, the dealers will need to build a parking garage to store them all.
EXACTLY what I think is going to happen. It’s pretty telling that I haven’t seen one high trim Tacoma on the road here (truck country) even after it’s been on sale for a year… haven’t seen one single Limited, TRD Pro, or Trailhunter in the wild.

Team Nissan for trucks! Hoping they make it strong and bring back the Xterra! - Always priced fair and good value. Toyota today is Toyota Tax over no value.
As an owner of the 2022 Lexus GX460, I tested out the new GX550 because we needed to add a car and was throughly disappointed at the quality. Firstly, it doesn't feel as stable as the old GX. The interior touch points are nice, but the non touch points are very cheap, unlike the old GX that uses quality material all around. The hood jiggles were one of my biggest annoyances. As well as road noise seems a tad bit higher. Also, I felt little cracks in the road, unlike the old GX, though that could be up to the tires.
Yep! You’re spot on here. The GX460 was built on the last gen Prado which was a luxury on and off road vehicle. The new Prado is a back to basics dedicated off-roader and so sadly the GX inherited all of its traits which don’t hold up in a vehicle that’s supposed to be premium.
After hearing that plastic panels 😳 I'm canceling my 2025 4runner trd sport 4X4 Premium. Prices are out of control. Quality 👎 I'll be considering a Lexus NX or RX 😂
No need to apologize, I agree with everything you’ve said! Land Cruiser is discounting, I have a feeling this 4Runner won’t sale as well as the 5th gen.
Just crazy, but no more out of line than any other brand. Vehicle prices across the board are out of line. SO which companies will go broke first.....last when people decide to not pay these prices.
There are a lot of car companies that are keeping their prices reasonable-high, but reasonable. The fact that the Passport will probably top out in the $50s (so $20K Lower than the 4Runner) and that you can get an MDX Type-S for only $5K more than a TRD Pro says a lot about the value that Honda/Acura offers. This 4Runner is the same price as a comparable Land Rover Defender… that’s not in line with other brands.
Crazy awesome looking 4Runner. With the average car payment $700/mth that equals $2.5 million in 30 years invested wisely. 4Runner Pricing is INSANE! 🤪 $90,000 up in Canada. Basically this SUV is vapourware. Poor value for the money. Simply not realistic in the real world. 👎🏼 🤮
VAPORWARE. 😂😂 100% on point. And also on point with the monthly-though since most people won’t put more than 10% down that’s easily $1,000+/mo for a mid trim. 🥴
@@joshjamescars Honestly it’s bizarre. And the target marketing is so precise it’s amazing. The auto companies want that 1/3 of a persons pay check for life 🤪
Here in Canada, the 2025 Limited is approaching $76.5K with federal sales tax, and even more in provinces that have provincial sales tax. I paid $57.1K out the door, taxes in, for my 2020 Limited, which seemed like a lot then, but I’m sure glad I have it now. The techy complications and overdone interior, along with what will likely be a less robust powertrain is not going to lure many existing owners to “upgrade”.
What you're saying about these new toyota trucks, Josh, is very valid. If you have heard of someone named naveenthemachine, he is the definition of a now turned toyota/lexus Hater. Even if u sound like u are hating, u are giving valid points instead of what naveen has been saying in every toyota lexus video.
You are spot on! I have a 2022 4R TRD PRO. The new one doesn’t do anything that mine can’t. (Updated inter, bigger screen, etc) Not worth the higher coin. We also have a 2022 GX 460 and it seems nicer than the new one as well. I agree with you, the only place we would even entertain is the GX 550. Others than that, there is now where else to go within Toyota/ Lexus.. I don’t understand the strategy either. Their value and quality is just not there anymore for me.
Great video, 100% spot on. The subpar quality really kills any argument to purchase one of these. You can’t even justify the price by saying well I’ll just love it and drive it for 10-15 years and 200,000 miles because there is no way this gen 4Runner will last that long. Also, it is highly doubtful that this gen 4Runner will have the same level resale value as older Toyotas always did. Very sad 🤦♂️
I guess this is why Iam considering the Honda passport 26. Top trim loaded is probably going to be in the 51k. Which makes sense. Toyota just went nuts and it’s going to hit them hard. Heck even now Hyundai is becoming dangerously competitive and attractive. Like Toyota u stay Toyota. Stop being a Lexus
Thanks for bringing up all the issues I have with the new Toyotas and pricing in general. Another plus on the last generation 4Runner with the V6 was that you could get the TRD Offroad, put some TRD wheels on it and it looked just as good as the TRD PRO model. However, the new TRD Offroad has cheaper looking black plastic fender mouldings, although this is probably more practical than the TRD Pro painted fender mouldings...so you won't be able to replicate the looks of the TRD PRO on the TRD Offroad anymore with a switch of the wheels. The TRD Offroad just looks cheap to me in the pictures with all that unpainted black plastic on the exterior. Maybe things will look different in person. Also, hopefully some upgrades will be made to the production models as prototypes sometimes have more hard plastic than production models. We'll have to see.
I've owned my 2008 SR5 RWD 4Runner for 16 years and love it. I would only consider replacing it with a new SR5 RWD base 4Runner, but I have a feeling Toyota will never sell a base model.
Some people but not many. I live in Texas, this is truck country, and I have not seen a single high trim Tacoma on the roads. It’s all SR5s, and I suspect that’s because those are leasing for $199/month right now because the dealers are desperate to get rid of them.
I remember when Japanese automakers sold sports cars prices slightly below European models in late-80s and 90s. All of those cars were discontinued (not including the fake Supra). This time, Toyota decided to price their trucks higher than their "Supra." Go figure.
I was also looking forward to the new 4Runner...All that plastic, the smaller turbo and the higher price. Still would want to check them out firsthand before making a decision. ✌
It feels like a betrayal from an old and valued friend. Gone is the over engineering, the quality materials, the long expected lifespan, the build quality, and evidently , also the philosophy.
I just spent $80k on a new Ford F-150, so I shouldn't be shocked at these Toyota prices...but I am. We have a 2008 Sequoia that's getting tired, so I was really hoping the 4Runner prices would make sense. I'm considering the GX, but there's only 1 at the Lexus dealer here, so they seem scarce, meaning $$$. Ugh.
Depends what you need. The weird thing is the top trims of the 4Runner now overlap with a GX550 Overtrail which I don’t really care for but is a MUCH better buy than this garbage. And if you don’t mind going unibody you could get a Passport TrailSport for probably around $55.
Hi Josh. Great channel. I was wondering what your thoughts are on the new passport about to be released? With a n.a. 6 cylinder engine and Honda's new 10 speed transmission. Might this be a relatively safer buy in year one than any of the totally revamped Toyotas in this category? Thanks.
I was hoping to upgrade from my RAV4 hybrid to 4Runner limited (need those power folding mirrors for garage space) but that ain’t happening anymore. Fully loaded Grand Highlander hybrid is still cheaper than mid level 4Runner. Bonkers.
Fortunately, I am not in the market for a vehicle, and with the exception of the 200 series Land Cruiser, I have not been inside a Toyota product in 30 years however, both, this version of the 4Runner AND the current Land Cruiser APPEAR to be massive downgrades from their previous iterations. Both interiors look particularly "cheap". I am in the minority in that I thought the 200 series Land Cruiser with the 3UR-FE engine was the pinnacle of Land Cruiser quality. I have spent considerable time in older and newer Lexus RX products and there does not seem to have been the same drop off in quality and aesthetics as there appears to be with Toyota products. If money is an object (and you care about build quality), it's probably best to look for Toyota/Lexus products of the 2012 to 2020 vintage, especially when it comes to their trucks.
Yes! Though our new Land Cruiser is a different member of the global Land Cruiser family. The 200 series which I also loved was the full size flagship Land Cruiser. This new one is the midsize Land Cruiser Prado which is also what our GX has always been based off of.
Toyota built their reputation on reliabilty, quality and value. That is no longer the case. It' s going to take a decade for them to restore their reputation, if ever.
Love the rants Josh! These new vehicles are absolute shite!! Gun to my head, the only new vehicle I would buy currently is the GX 550 Overtrail. I don't do cheap plastic interiors.
Overpriced and crap! I agree with you 💯. They are ripping off customers to pay more and get less. What a scam for dummies. I hope all these new trucks Toyota n Lexus is releasing flops and teaches them a lesson.
Having driven the Land Cruiser which has the same powertrain as the new 4Runner, I wouldn’t take any of the new gen trucks until Toyota seriously improves that powertrain. It’s laggy, jerky, and inefficient all at the same time (plus the Land Cruiser requires premium fuel).
Tacoma only had about 500 to 1000 of profit between invoice and msrp. Most dealership didnt even discount it but people saw value in the truck. Now new one ? Come on i cant imagine paying 50k for mid trim tacoma. Its shame as i ownd 88 91 02. LC fell down even worse. I have 99 with 380k miles. Was excited for new lc until i saw it was 4seater buff rav4. Well i m moving on to different manufacturers
Listen, you can't order a 4Runner, everything is through allocation, and Toyota is not going to produce many base trim SR5's, so don't even think about getting a 2025 4Runner for less than 50k OTD. And the top trims are going to be north of 80k OTD.
What options are there? I may be one of those forced to buy that 4Runner in the next 2-3 years. My 2024 Camry is still under warranty through 2026. I have time. I don't want to purchase the first production 4Runner. I know I want an SUV for the space. Should I go GX550? MDX? QX60? Or maybe, Toyota will change by then once they realize no one's buying their SUV's.
well, they'll sell (some). A bunch up front for sticker, and then the discounts will come. They all can't be horrible vehicles, maybe just not worth the asking price, but doesn't that hold true for most new vehicles? A lot of people out there will lots of disposable income, will want the latest and ... latest. Seems like, in general, prices have gone up too much, and quality and reliability have gone down.
Nope, wont even consider it, my last Toyota i bought brand new was a 2016 tundra. I wont entertain the ridiculous prices, love toyota trucks but just cant do it.
Who wants to pay for this prices for 1000lb payload. Toyota got stupid in pricing. I am driving TRD off Road Premium and I paid $49k. Better to buy Lexus for this price.
I have a 2016 SR5 and will be keeping it for awhile as I am not a fan of the new Toyota products. Tacoma and Land Cruiser interiors look and feel cheaply made.
Just wait, the American economy is going to be a bigger shit show over the next 4 years. People better buy a new car before January otherwise they are going to be 10-25 percent more expensive.
75-90k Cad for 4runner limited , Canada is also a shit show in economic poverty, IN BC that can be a downpayment for a new apartment in witch starts at 600k for 400-500 SqFt witch is also quite disgusting.... but a car?? really
Guess im keeping my 1996 4runner for a longer time now lmao, only thing my 4runner doesnt have is a giant infotainment screen , heated etc Cons - 20L/100km Gross fuel economy I can put 120v plug in the back of my 4runner, it was blue tooth audio connection with sub in the back, moon roof 4w drive 4H 4L button control , Locking diff
But Toyota is not the only one charging 1% type of price Who in their right mind will buy a raptor for 100k? Toyota betta pray to not become a Nissan...cause. Even tho Nissan interior is way better than new Toyotas. Edit: I blame the new CEO, when Toyota was under Akio Toyoda....everything was wonders.... The new North America CEO and his team are doing a horrible job. But outside of North America, Toyota have a hard core fan base, special in Africa and Middle East
Yeah, although with the Raptor R you get a seriously awesome truck with a V8 and an interior that feels like you have something special… can’t say that about this or the Tundra 🥴 And agree at Nissan, although if the wanted to get out of trouble they ought to make another body on frame pathfinder or Xterra like thing. Keep the V6 but with Pro4X capability and there’s a solid budget alternative to the 4Runner!
If your income (or investment) jumped 17% in the last year, you're then keeping up with the price increase and maybe you can justify buying the new 4Runner. Otherwise, grind harder and earn more
That’s called lifestyle creep, and that’s what keeps people from amassing wealth. Like I could easily afford one of these but there’s no way in hell I’d pay the price for it! 😂

I like the trail hunter, but there is no way I could afford that thing!! I got a 24 TRD off road premium this past summer & am very thankful for it!!!
After hearing that plastic panels 😳 I'm canceling my 2025 4runner trd sport 4X4 Premium. Prices are out of control. Quality 👎 I'll be considering a Lexus NX or RX 😂
Thank you! The best review I’ve seen so far
Glad I got one of the last few of the 2024 4Runner. Super solidly built
@@joshjamescars
Honestly it’s bizarre. And the target marketing is so precise it’s amazing. The auto companies want that 1/3 of a persons pay check for life 🤪
Are they trying for price over quanity now? I love the trailhunter, but basically 70k+ for a mid size truck with a covered bed is wild.
Great vid! Keep them coming!
Calling out RUclips shills = like 👍
Thanks for bringing up all the issues I have with the new Toyotas and pricing in general.
I got the 2024 TRD Sport Taco and I love it, I leased it though. I’ll probably end up buying it out
I've owned my 2008 SR5 RWD 4Runner for 16 years and love it. I would only consider replacing it with a new SR5 RWD base 4Runner, but I have a feeling Toyota will never sell a base model.
I absolutely love my land cruiser 250
I’m glad you love it! Would hate for you to have bought something and hate it.
My local dealer was marking up 4 runners by $10k, those days are probably over.
Thing is people will still be paying it. I heard so many complaints about the Tacoma and people are buying them.
Some people but not many. I live in Texas, this is truck country, and I have not seen a single high trim Tacoma on the roads. It’s all SR5s, and I suspect that’s because those are leasing for $199/month right now because the dealers are desperate to get rid of them.
enjoyed the rant
I remember when Japanese automakers sold sports cars prices slightly below European models in late-80s and 90s. All of those cars were discontinued (not including the fake Supra). This time, Toyota decided to price their trucks higher than their "Supra." Go figure.
I was also looking forward to the new 4Runner...All that plastic, the smaller turbo and the higher price. Still would want to check them out firsthand before making a decision. ✌
It feels like a betrayal from an old and valued friend. Gone is the over engineering, the quality materials, the long expected lifespan, the build quality, and evidently , also the philosophy.
is the i-force hyrbid any good compared to other hybrid options?
You got yourself a sub
My venture is so rare now 😊
Rubbermaid is sending their excess scrap output over to Toyota.
Ugh.
Outstanding video Josh. I have a 2024 Toyota 4Runner Limited. Do you think prices will drop, hold, or increase on the 5th Gens now?
I think the 5th gen will hold value well, in part due to the 6th gen, which is looking more and more likely to be an overpriced flop.
@ I agree 100 percent. Thanks
It’s right in line with the other extremely inflated prices from competitors (unfortunately) except you’re getting ZERO discount on a new 4-Runner
What do you recommend for quality vs value ? Great video by the way !!!
Thanks.
A 4Runner shouldn't cost more than the average salary, which is in the 40's.
I just thanked my wife for allowing me to get a 2024 TRD Pro. Seems like such a bargain now.
Toyota built their reputation on reliabilty, quality and value. That is no longer the case. It' s going to take a decade for them to restore their reputation, if ever.
you are not a hater, you are just voicing online what a lot of Toyota fans are saying offline.
Not a fan of the new iforce max engine, but I'd rather pick the new LC over the 4R.
Hey man! I’m in Brownsville, TX!
Toyota has completely RUINED their entire lineup. No value, no reliability anymore.
Love the rants Josh! These new vehicles are absolute shite!! Gun to my head, the only new vehicle I would buy currently is the GX 550 Overtrail. I don't do cheap plastic interiors.
How glad are you that you bought your 5th-gen TRD Pro!? 😂😂😂😂
@@joshjamescars Right!
Overpriced and crap! I agree with you 💯. They are ripping off customers to pay more and get less. What a scam for dummies. I hope all these new trucks Toyota n Lexus is releasing flops and teaches them a lesson.
Over hype trucks. More plastic, lower quality, uglier designs, smaller engines, etc...I'll pass.
2025 trd pro or 2024 trd pro? Which would you take? 2024 trd pro vs land cruiser?
Having driven the Land Cruiser which has the same powertrain as the new 4Runner, I wouldn’t take any of the new gen trucks until Toyota seriously improves that powertrain. It’s laggy, jerky, and inefficient all at the same time (plus the Land Cruiser requires premium fuel).
Hey dude, we ALL feel the same. Toyota has lost their way with these turbocharged engines and complete redesigns.
Well said!!!!!
a 4 banger with a price of a V10
Listen, you can't order a 4Runner, everything is through allocation, and Toyota is not going to produce many base trim SR5's, so don't even think about getting a 2025 4Runner for less than 50k OTD. And the top trims are going to be north of 80k OTD.
Right!!! It’s ridiculous!!!
Thank you!
They are out of their minds
What options are there? I may be one of those forced to buy that 4Runner in the next 2-3 years. My 2024 Camry is still under warranty through 2026. I have time. I don't want to purchase the first production 4Runner. I know I want an SUV for the space. Should I go GX550? MDX? QX60? Or maybe, Toyota will change by then once they realize no one's buying their SUV's.
The price is ridiculous I bought a 23 SR5 4x4 and that was $36k I will not be buying the 6th generation
Hard plastic EXACTLY like 1970s toyota carry or corolla
well, they'll sell (some).
WTH, how can a 4x2 be over 50K. No thanks. I like 4runners but not that much.
Why did you roast our boy TRD JOHN 😭😭
4Runners should not be over 50K period.
Nope, wont even consider it, my last Toyota i bought brand new was a 2016 tundra. I wont entertain the ridiculous prices, love toyota trucks but just cant do it.
I was looking forward to this vehicle but now i will have to pass. Its way too expensive.
Who wants to pay for this prices for 1000lb payload. Toyota got stupid in pricing. I am driving TRD off Road Premium and I paid $49k. Better to buy Lexus for this price.
Stupid is the word!
I have a 2016 SR5 and will be keeping it for awhile as I am not a fan of the new Toyota products. Tacoma and Land Cruiser interiors look and feel cheaply made.
Me any car above 40k I’m now buying it period. I rather buy little car and move on with my life .
Just wait, the American economy is going to be a bigger shit show over the next 4 years. People better buy a new car before January otherwise they are going to be 10-25 percent more expensive.
75-90k Cad for 4runner limited , Canada is also a shit show in economic poverty, IN BC that can be a downpayment for a new apartment in witch starts at 600k for 400-500 SqFt witch is also quite disgusting.... but a car?? really
Guess im keeping my 1996 4runner for a longer time now lmao, only thing my 4runner doesnt have is a giant infotainment screen , heated etc
Cons - 20L/100km Gross fuel economy
I can put 120v plug in the back of my 4runner, it was blue tooth audio connection with sub in the back, moon roof 4w drive 4H 4L button control , Locking diff
Id rather buy a Rolex 🤙
Will probably hold its value better!! 😂
Whoa. The screen is butt ugly
But Toyota is not the only one charging 1% type of price
Who in their right mind will buy a raptor for 100k?
Toyota has missed the mark.
You love Toyota but Toyota doesn’t love you buddy 😂😂😂😂
car is trash.
delusional price no thank you
Where are the pathetic yota fan bois !?😅😅
If your income (or investment) jumped 17% in the last year, you're then keeping up with the price increase and maybe you can justify buying the new 4Runner. Otherwise, grind harder and earn more
Yeah you have to pay taxes to cash out of your investment to buy a depreciating asset.
That’s called lifestyle creep, and that’s what keeps people from amassing wealth. Like I could easily afford one of these but there’s no way in hell I’d pay the price for it! 😂
@@bngr_bngryou’re conflating the value proposition of a product vs. what a person can afford. The wise consumer never confuses one for the other.
