In this episode I finally realize my dream of sliding my seat back into the sleeper of my 359 Peterbilt “Little by Little” thank to the Big Hole Conversion kit that was supplied by the Truck Shroud company (www.truckshrouds.com/).
Big Hole conversion kits available here: www.truckshrouds.com/big-hole...
These are essentially the same rings that are on the Unibilt sleepers that PACCAR started making in the mind-90s that increases the sleeper opening over 60%. It wasn’t nearly as hard to install as I was expecting and its well worth the effort of you have an old Kenworth, Peterbilt, Freightliner, etc and you want to get a little more legroom.
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for all the comments, suggestions, and support!
Keep in mind, I know a little about a lot but not an expert in anything … just doing the best I can, learning as I go ... I do all my own stunts
If you enjoy these videos and like classic trucks, I encourage you to check out and join the American Truck Historical Society: www.aths.org/

Greatest upgrade. I’m 6’4” tall. I’m in the sleeper driving down the road. My 2022 when the salesman delivered it to me. I immediately pulled the seat took it back 4” and reinstalled. The back of my seat is against the bed. You turn 100 thousand miles a year in one. You gotta be comfortable. Patsy Cline playing in the background she was born and raised and laid to rest right up the road from me.

@@TwinStix Please do NOT use silicone, use marine grade butyl tape.
Boaters stay away from silicone, it just doesn't last, like quality butyl tape.
Butyl doesn't degrade, I've seen it last for 20 plus years, silicone, maybe 5 years.
Check it out, do not take my word for it.

I would personally use a proprietary flexible panel sealant, not silicone. There are some very good products available from Sika,3M,Wurth,Kent ind.etc. I've used a couple of different types replacing panels on campervans, motorhomes, truck bodies, caravans etc. with very good results. As someone else mentioned above, butyl tape is another method and one seemingly favoured by bus companies, presumably for ease of regular replacement😊. The two buses I've repaired had taped panels. It's worthy of note and worth keeping in mind that a couple of panels I have removed from buses was that there were instances of moisture/dirt creeping in in some areas between the mechanical fixings, meaning that the tape was no longer sufficiently sealing in those areas, probably due to constant vibration in use.

    • @carlthor91
      @carlthor91 5 месяцев назад

@@notpoliticallycorrect1303 If you do not have a secure mechanical hold on the panels yes. But then everything fails, at some point, when that movement between them is allowed.
The butyl is not the failure, the connection is the failure.
The 3M high strength tape, is wonderful material, it's drawback, is that, once fixed. If you have to remove, you essentially tear the aluminum panels, if they are thin, like body panels.

FunFact: When Bombardier Canada bought the Adtranz train manufacturer in the UK in 2001 one of the first changes they engineered when their first new designs came through was making every panel join Huckbolted not just a few selected areas. So the 23 metre aluminium extruded sides were placed in a frame on the carriage floor with the roof and end panels and they were all Huckbolted. Its just a brilliantly simple way to assemble and later repair panels.
And Little by Little will certainly feel better inside as well as looking Mint outside when you hit the paint gun.

I may have been the lone dissenter on the big hole conversion, still am. Your skills and tenacity to take on that much work is admirable. However, just because it Can be done doesn't mean it Should be done. This was a pretty rare 359 with the twin sticks to begin with. Now, to me anyway, its just another resto mod like many others.
I just fail to see the point unless you are 6'3" or more, and plan to work it daily.
I'm sure it will turn out awesome and you will be proud you did it, just a word of caution to others. After all, you can't undo it.
Still giving a thumbs up, you are a master craftsman!

I have driven both ( 359 with a small hole and 379 with the big opening) and what a difference there is. The guy who said the juice isn't worth the squeeze must be a smaller fellow. I'm 5' 10" and 190 pounds and I always had the seat rubbing the back. So there is no doubt you'll love it now.
As far as the Duke goes I'm on the fence about the teardrop in the back corner. In my opinion it'll depend on the paint job you put on it. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us.

Hey Mark another smart idea;would be an air ride conversion for both the cab & sleeper and an air ride front axle in the future.
By having the front axle and the cab & sleeper riding on both shocks and airbags, will further reduce road vibrations and further improve the overall ride quality of the truck.
I have seen several RUclips videos of some beautifully restored owner/operator Peterbilt 359s that had the front axle and cab & sleeper converted to air ride and had done the unibilt sleeper conversion to provide better comfort for the o/o drivers that are over 6' in height.

Use a polysulfide aviation sealant to install the rings. If you use butyl to seal rings to cab when the hucks are installed it will dimple around the heads. The polysulfide sealant spreads thin and will squeeze out to leave a flush install.

As someone who owned a party van back in the day that when I got it had small round tinted flat glass “turnpike windows” that just had to replace them bubble style teardrop “turnpike windows” that are made out of plastic all I can say is Don’t, Do Not Pass Go or Collect 200 Dollars. Even back in the day when you could buy quality US made plastic bubble style turnpike windows the were a constant problem. The problems started with the dam things leaked water because the gasket(s) every window kit cam with were made from gasket material/weather stripping designed and intended for automotive window glass and as a result the plastic bubble windows even when made with thick edges were still to thin. Additionally the plastic bubble “turnpike widows” could and would blow out while going down the road if you had the front windows or roof vents open and wind was blowing/gusting hard enough in the right direction. The common patch that people tried after the carpet/insulation/paneling was damaged or ruined was to remove the window and gasket and fill the groves/chanels in the with silicone which might of sealed the leak but then the paint and windows were stained from water/silicone. Additionally the silicone always oozed out in places that were impossible to clean up when installing the windows. Besides leaking, and blowing out the things would break with a hard stare after they were a year or two old and or in cold weather. Lastly when you get tired of the damn things you are left with a pair of holes in the side of your vehicle that are a pain in the arse to patch and make look like they were never there. Besides that did I mention if you buy a set of those windows then you should buy several sets from the same seller because the size of those windows are definitely not the same between makers and even between lots from the same manufacturer. Lastly the damn things feel like they aren’t installed when it is anything other than 70 and partly sunny outside because the plastic has zero insulation properties.
Mark, You do what you want but from someone who owned a vans with plastic bubble style turnpike windows as well as a van with flat window glass turnpike windows I definitely would recommend getting ones made from flat tinted window glass if you are dead set on installing turnpike windows in the sleeper of the Iron Duke but personally I would not.

This was one of the best modifications I've done to mine. The truck is so much more comfortable!! I got my rings and boot from truck shrouds too! I would be so pumped if they started making cab and body panels. I dont think anyone makes the plastic a pillar cab covers either. A fiberglass version of those would be pretty sweet....

hey Mark I have done a couple of 359 complete rebuilds I love them being saved from the grave.I make them look original as I can but like the big hole upgrade as I run all over canada/us with mine and its nice to have the extra space it makes a big differece when you are in them daily.that ring really should be on the inside you will have to rework those corner brackets some more, you might want to measure your boot you will lose at least 1/4 of an inch putting it on the outside and it might be crushing your boot to close together but it might not matter for your application as mine is always moving and lastly I use seam sealer not silicone its much better.have a good day!

Hi mark well, I have to say man. No one can accuse you of being a procrastinator you just get right in there and do it. That's what I love about your show.

I put those rings in my old 1995 Kenworth. I put them on from the inside of the cab/Sleeper.
I got mine from Stahl Peterbilt.

This is why I'm thankful that in Australia we have integrated bunks. We don't even have a big hole. It's just open. There's nothing to leak, nothing to trip over when you're drunk. You can fit your fridge behind the passenger seat and freezer behind the srivers seat. Ou don't smack your head on anything and you can stand up to put your jeans on.
I spent a few years in older trucks with small bunks when I was younger but no way in hell I'd do it now I'm older and fatter.

Lookin' awesome Mark! Gotta says, you didn't hesitate to jump right in and start cutting once you'd measured (not once/but twice) and outlined the exact location for the wider opening. I personally, would've been paralyzed with intimidation to accomplish what you just did alone, without a little guided assistance. I'm thoroughly impressed with your project skill set and determination. Keep on truckin'!

So happy that you were able to get the big hole conversion figured out. LBL is your truck and you have to make it into what YOU want! The only crying shame about it, is having to take apart that beautiful Day Cab Company interior. But outstanding work. Can’t wait to see next weeks episode! Maybe you should have given us a 2fer😂
