      Did your transmission just not go into any gear?

    • @WalterCombsLCSW
      @WalterCombsLCSW  3 года назад

      @bill2526 bill2526 This would be a good place to start. Check your fluid that comes out and check the magnet on the pan to see if there is anything bigger than just fine grit fillings. If it is under warrantee though, have the shop look at if first. If you can make them fix it for free, that's always the nest bet. Once they find out you popped the seal they will cry VOID WARRENTEE, and you will be stuck with any future issues as your own. Good Luck with your fix.

      @bill2526 bill2526 I changed the computer on my Chevy Suburban and it turned out to not be the problem. I had purchased faulty O2 Sensors.... not what we are talking about here... I'm not sure what it would be then. I've heard the Solenoids are at fault when shifting is hard or very delayed, but not when it wont shift at all. Still I'm just a DIY guy, so there is a lot of things in this world I haven't experienced yet. Good Luck and feel free to report back if you do manage to fix the problem :-)

    Great video. If you dont want totake the exhaust bolts out of fear of them breaking. Take the transmission mount bolts off and pry the transmission up a bit to get the pan out.

  • @ThisWorldIs5150

    Quick tip, when your putting the pan back on put your bolts thru the pan and gasket. The gaskets are fitted a bit tight around the bolts for this reason. It eliminates the need to adjust while holding the pan up. Keeps the gasket I. Place and the bolts are then ready to fit right in.

Its an inexpensive repair when you do it yourself but it would still be frustrating to spend a big portion of a day doing this and not have it make any difference. • @WalterCombsLCSW
      @WalterCombsLCSW  4 года назад +1

      sikk84mcss I found the following to be a really good explanation to usual faulty solenoid symptoms. www.transmissionrepaircostguide.com/transmission-solenoid/
      There is a section that refers to your question : “If the shift solenoid is receiving too much or too little electric current, or dirty transmission fluid has caused it to become stuck open / closed, gear engagement maybe become difficult or delayed, which can cause the transmission to act as if it is temporarily locked in neutral.”
      I hope you find this article as helpful as I did. 👍

    • @WalterCombsLCSW
      @WalterCombsLCSW  4 года назад +2

      That has got to be frustrating. Worst case scenario, would you have to try and drill out the screw? I didn't have the trouble with the shift cable bracket so I am not sure how it is effecting your progress. Honestly I don't even remember it.
      Would it be possible to lock your car in place with parking break and wheel chocks (or if you have all tires off the ground) and then place your vehicle in a gear other than park in an attempt to get that cable bracket to move out of the way? Then you could return it to park when the pan is down.
      That's just a guess without having my hands on it... Good luck.

    Thanks . Could a dirty or clogged transmission filter cause the transmission to not shift right? I ask because my truck was running great before I parked it. I left it sitting for a week, I started up and went for a drive and the that's when I notice it started acting up. My speedometer wasn't working so I turn back around to the house, checked the fluid. I notice it was low and the stick was a little dirty. It wasn't metal shaving though. So do you think by putting in a new filter and fresh fluid will fix it?

    • @WalterCombsLCSW
      @WalterCombsLCSW  5 лет назад

      Does the fluid "smell burnt"? That's a big test of big problems. If the vehicle has never had a filter replacement it could be a good thing to do. My thought is if you, for any reason, have to drop the tranny pan, you might as well replace the filter. It can be years before you have to get back in there again and they are really inexpensive. If you have a mechanic you trust who is willing to "Look" without charging an assessment fee, definitely take advantage of that. I had a car years ago (chevy celebrity) that sat for a long time--longer than yours--and stuck in gear (not down shift or up shift) without manually moving the shifter. Dropping the pan and replacing the fluid and filter did the trick. Give your transmission a strong visual once over and watch other videos showing what transmissions look like from the "pan off" perspective so you have a better chance of seeing a problem if there is one. And definitely if you see ground up metal in the bottom of the pan... well, that's another problem Good Luck.

    • @WalterCombsLCSW
      @WalterCombsLCSW  3 года назад

      So reverse still worked.... That must have been a frustrating experience...
      All forward gears quit? Meaning you came to a stop... stepped ont he gas and it did not go forward... Did you then grab the shifter and drop it down into First, or Low?
      Just wondering. The last time I had a vehicle to that to me it was a 1973 AMC Hornet and I has bottomed it out on a bad road and crushed one of the lines going to the transmission cooler. The fluid drained out and my gears did not respond. I was able to get it into first gear to get it to a point where I could be towed home. After I replaced the damaged line it held fluid and worked fine.
      Without knowing more it sounds like you ran out of trans fluid... but you would have known that long before you wrote here so that might not be the issue. Start with the Fluid level. Then shift manually and see if it responds. Short test drives. so you don't get stranded again. If you do drop the pan and drain the fluid, be sure to use an empty basin to catch and measure how much fluid you have in the trans compared to how much should be there. You will be kind of pealing the onion till you get to the layer that says "Here's the problem."
      Good luck.

    • @WalterCombsLCSW
      @WalterCombsLCSW  2 года назад +1

      You bring up a really good point. I remember my grandfather would use a thin line of silicone and a silk string to create a tight seal between parts on his old VW Bug. I did just use the tranny fluid since I had a gasket. Its just a trick I do to hold the gasket in place and absorb some fluid to get the minor folds out from being shipped in a box. If you find you need to use silicon to prevent any leakage, definitely do what you need to do for your personal car. Much of what I show is to help people realize it is possible to do minor repairs on their own vehicles and save hundreds (if not more) dollars.

    I was driving home in my hummer h3 and my transmission start slipping and did not go into gear anymore nor into reverse would this be a shift solenoid problem?

    • @WalterCombsLCSW
      @WalterCombsLCSW  4 года назад

      I guess the most obvious question is to ask if you have a hydraulic leak... ? Sort of like asking if your computer is plugged in the wall when you call tech support ;-) Something like that happened to me years ago when I was driving very fast on a bumpy dirt road in a street car (1970-something AMC Hornet) I bounced the front so bad I broke the hydraulic lines and drained my transmission fluid out. It would not engage in any gear.
      I recommend you do some deeper investigation and plug in your OBD code reader if your check engine light came on. If you don't have an OBD Code reader, many auto shops have one you can borrow with a deposit of some sort. While I was out on vacation and my check engine light came on I stopped in an Auto Zone, used their OBD Reader and they printed out a few pages of stuff for me. Tuns out in that case I was pushing the engine to hard while trying to maintain speed while towing up hill. Once I slowed down and stayed in lower gears I had no further problems. As for your issue, I can't give you a definitive answer... It "might" be the shift solenoid, and while it is a inexpensive DIY project... It would be frustrating to do it and not solve the problem. Grab a mechanic friend you trust and have that person give your Hummer the once over. Most shops seem to be scared of transmission work and try to get you to get a whole new transmission when a small fix will do. Good Luck.

      And now for the rest of the story. After all the good advice I received from Walter, I ended up replacing both solenoids A & B. I do want to tell you some things I would look out for in doing this repair.
      I did this replacement with my front wheels on drive up ramps with 2 other stationary supports to give me some room under the vehicle.
      Put down a lot of cardboard because the transmission fluid goes a lot of other places besides the fluid catch pan you wish it would have gone into.
      To remove the transmission pan it might be a lot faster to remove the bolts with a drill instead of just a socket wrench. I only had a socket.
      When replacing the pan back in I would hand tighten the bolts to start so you don't cross thread the bolts.
      Do have a big crowbar available to help pull down the exhaust pipe that might be blocking the transmission pan from dropping down far enough to be removed.
      When removing solenoid A that I think is the one that had the spring, make sure it doesn't come shooting out underneath the vehicle and lose it.
      After removing each solenoid,
      I removed the spring and then the gear rod so I could clean it. Make sure how the gear rod came out so you know what way to put it back in on both solenoids.
      After replacing both solenoids A&B I preceded to clean out the transmission pan and where the old gasket was.
      At this point is where I forget to replace the transmission filter and I didn't realize this until after I replaced the pan and all the bolts. It is not fun removing those bolts twice.
      DON'T FORGET TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION FILTER.
      I replaced the transmission fluid and started the vehicle and let it run for a while and then topped off the fluid.
      My 2005 Yukon run great now.
      Thanks for all your help and advice.

The Solenoids 1&2 are for forward gears 1,2,3,4. I would recommend grabbing a friend (or just friendly) mechanic you trust to help you Brain storm some ideas. If your forward gears are good but your reverse gear is troublesome, this fix is probably not your answer. Good Luck on your fix.

      mitch christopher maybe. But usually when this happens the shifting is rough. Not the engine dies. However if it’s dies when you come to a stop after driving because it doesn’t down shift, this might be the issue. I had that with a Chevy Celebrity many years ago.

      Most likey yes--- but I have never had the opportunity to look at an 05 Escalade. If they have the same 4L60E transmission then absolutely. If it is different then check other videos out there to make sure you know the difference.
      I did a quick internet search and it looks like you "should" have the same transmission but I also found 1 spot that called it a 4L65E. Maybe that's a typeo. Good Luck.

      I experienced delayed shifting and rough shifting. I also had a check engine light code because the shifting was messing with my fuel ratio throwing off the computer thinking I had bad O2 sensors. Everything kind of lumped into one pile of problems that took a long time to sift through.
      One website says the following "The main driving symptoms that you will notice with the symptoms of a bad transmission control solenoid is that there could be delayed gear shifting, you can’t downshift and your engine will continue to rev, your transmission will be stuck in the neutral position, and the shifting of gears becomes very rough and choppy.
