- Today the story is about an unknown project of the world's best superbike. It has pneumatic valves, an electro-hydraulic gearbox and many truly innovative solutions for the 90s. All this, as usually happens, was built by another Australian genius.
Have a good mood everyone and enjoy watching! - Авто/Мото
The beauty of the internet. A large percentage of the bike and engine test photos came from my camera.
What happened to all your horse porn photos on your phone?
Great story , I actually worked on this bike and later worked for Rod as a mechanic at Parramatta, tig welding the dry sump tanks and fabrication of the swing arms. Rumour is the gearbox was part for part from a Suzuki , someone told Suzuki and they were not happy - probably angry permission or credit wasn't given , they threatened to pull the dealership ( Action sold more Suzuki's in Aus than anybody else ) unless he developed and built his own gearbox design , this would have broken the budget and killed it .
Woow, thank you for this detail🤔
Yes, they were Suzuki GSXR clusters. 6 Speed for the X1R and 5 speed for the cruiser. Suzuki Australia knew about this as Rod had cut a deal for supply. This wouldn't be Ian would it?
@@richardjames7154 Then I stand corrected, i was told Suzuki Japan were not notified - like I said it was just a rumour told me by "kiwi" Simon ,who did the milling and lathe work on the project ,he came from the Hallam boys camp and there was bad blood at the end of it with plenty of mudslinging from both sides . What a shame , there's a real market and financial backing for these type of bikes today .
@@uy7535 yes, there was a lot of mud slinging at the end. Simon (vale) was actually from Rod's camp if you want to look at it like that. He had worked for Rod previously and was the original machinist when the drawings, based on Paul's design sketches, were being produced above Rod's Parramatta shop. He machined the first couple of engines there. He was always based in Sydney even though the rest of the design department moved to Paul's premises. He remained on the project after Rod and Paul fell out and it was only when the project moved to Harrops that he relocated to Victoria.
Yep. Got a copy of the Cathcart article. This video perfectly describes the main problem with many an exciting motorcycle startup. Attention in the press rarely leads to actual sales. For the people behind it it is their lifetime masterwork. For the rest of the world it is little more then just another attention grabber which goes through an accelerated hype lifecycle. This channel is full of such examples. But aren’t they all great homages to the stubborn pursuit of innovation? Real innovation. Not the “we’ll add an extra page to the app” kind. Thanks Wierdbike! 👍👍
Well said...
... and X1R end up being plastered as a now defunct oil brand
Very True and it is a painful moment when you realise that years of work means nothing to the general population.
@@richardjames7154 Sounds like you know the feeling. So do I. The only solution is to stop waiting for others to catch up and simply go on with what you are doing.
3’:26” - 3’:29” of the Rage mule is in our old backyard in suburban Sydney. My brother worked on the design team
Great Hunwick Hallam project insight, personally think just the sports bike concept would have been the best way forward for company success & survival...as the old saying goes, 'don't bite of more than you can chew'...
Having said that, l think the Britten V1000 was the ultimate 'ahead' of the game benchmark project sports bike.
Car? It’s a motorcycle!
15:40 Cylinder diameter of 102 "em em". This guy is an AI.
Lost of mistakes in this script
@@cadecarp11I laughed out loud at "Island of Phillip"!!!
@@dkf2711 Yerp, the accent swings between english, indian, south african, you can hear some other anomalies too. I suspect it's a translated script shoved into a voice bot.
@@SubieSpecs Probably also why all their wikipedia screenshots are written in cyrillic script.

The island of Philip!
Would that perhaps be Philip Island?
Yep, which used to governed by a guy called Arthur Phillip.... after whom it was named.
I still have that copy of AMCN with the X1R on the cover , epic pic.
This bike was promoted through AMCN and Rapid Bikes magazines in Australia I was on the HH mailing list until it folded.
Brilliant, weird bike, keep on rolling. Thanks for highlighting the real men and real engineering motorcycle masterpieces! Greetings from fighting Ukraine.
Так я ж сам з України😅
Дякую!
This is the bike I'm most disappointed that it never made production.
Great story of incredible visionaries and an incredible motorcycle.
Excellent doc. Details are just incredible and fascinating. Love the evolution of good design. I will watch twice indeed.
16:14 : nice "brough superior" t-shirt :)
Thx for vid. Never knew this.
What is this weird power unit GP???
It's a motorbike not a car.
It’s likely an artefact of the translation software. H is pronounced G or J in many European languages. The maps are in Cyrillic which is a clue to origin.
@@ThreenaddiesRexMegistusthe thing you are saying,
There is an absence of H in Russo Ukrainian, Yugoslavian and Bulgarian.
So the language has replaced it with G. Never with J.
And you pronounce it short hard G like in Greg, never Gee like in George.
For that kind of letter there is always it's own letter.
From memory Hallam also made a little V8 motorbike in the late 90s.
Nice to see another New Zealander building great engines. The bike looks so Ugly, not sure they would sell many. The Britten V-Twin most certainly wins this category..
I ah, Think You'll Find that "Car" is a Bike!
What an awesome sound.
Great video, really informative but why “the car”?
I vaguely remember the X1R. Can't say I remember the cruiser, though.
Your research into these long lost gems is most impressive.
I'm looking forward to seeing what other motorcycling insanity has existed through the ages you can find. You've come up with some real beauties 😉👍🏻
It would be interesting to see how it would go if released today with modern technology. Truly a wonderful motorcycle. Not a cruiser guy but I’d buy the Boss. Great video and I’m guessing English isn’t your primary language. Well done! 👍🏻
Never knew anything about the X1R , only seen a few articles about the cruiser in magazines . Thanks to this video I know more now , unfortunately the company is not operating anymore .
Ahead of it's time and an inspiration to future designers.
i like the design of x1r :D :D :D
Nice car....😮
Beuatiful story i was not awear about it
why does narrator keep saying car? the channel is called WEIRD BIKE
It appears to be an AI voice, "'reading"' a script translated from a non-english language by Google Translate. That's not to suggest there aren't humans behind this work, just that they are non-english speakers and so use AI tech to turn their work into English. If you've ever seen RacerTV, that's a dude from Belgium(?) I think, who uses an AI voice and auto-translator... I've seen several other non-English channels translations and subtitles that mis-translate 'motorcycle' as 'car' - commonly Japanese custom builders. I think its just a glitch in the transaltor they use....
They can’t even spell weird...
Channel should be renamed weird car, it's so weird it's not a car.
Not a car.
Paul hallam was a Legend, he worked on my harley for years before is passing . He fort for years to get the track bike and he did and i got the chance to sit on it at his farm/ workshop in geelong as for hunwick l Won't say what I think of him because I'll get kicked off you tube he put Paul Through hell, paul was the brain's of the outfit
RIFP PAUL HALLAM
3:30 that's a Moto Guzzi California 1100
Are you measuring power in the units of Gil Points or Gold Points? Why you keep saying 'GP' for power figures? This isnt an old school RPG!
I think WP is Wimm Peterson, the other thing WP is another thing entirely.
“White Power” - that is suspension one
Thank you. Something I knew little about. A nice bit of flesh on the bones. Posh Indian (?) narrator kept calling 'bikes cars, weird. Further weirdness with Russian maps of Australia.
it’s a wIErdbike😁
😅Only problem Honda Produced the Fireblade Engine simple compact and won Everything on the Road and the track , Brilliant Engineering but Dated before it started off the Test Bed ,Honda fireblade is so easy to Ride and a winner before it was released for production 😂 Excellent video production ❤

Bike not car u keep saying
nice video but you ceep saying cars instead of bike.
WeirdBike with at times Weird commentary
*Weird
Calling a frame a chassis sounds weird but it's not actually wrong but calling a motorbike a car is well wrong.
Why do you keep calling it a car.? Is this Ai generated or something? Very bizarre.
Very cool technology! Unfortunately the bikes look, ahem, err, uh, Australian.
WHY i the WORLD did Harley Davidson even get mentioned along side of these models? LOL OBVIOUSLY has ZERO (other than vee twin) to do with any Harley....save perhaps Buell chassis (not the HD engines which only dragged buell DOWN)
Truth is, it wasn't anything Special! The Britten Shat all over it, in every way!
Dscc from Suzuki made the swirls in the eighties.
Not innovative, thieving!
she an't no Britten
Amazing story, but the engine sound not so nice
An average V-twin…🥲
It would be nice if the reader learned how to speak & read some details correctly.. ...But this is a Rusdian Ork channel, so, Orks never learn even if you try to beat it into them.
mm = millimeters,
Cathcart = Cath (sounds alike wrath..) kath-kart,
GP = HP Horsepower), 'GP' is not a measurement of engine power
Car = Bike or vehicle (cars have 4 wheels and you sit inside to drive it, where as bikes only have 2 whels and you sit upon tio ride it).
Im not russian you dumb ass😘
@@wierdbike really, do you know what a car is not ?
@@wierdbikeUkrainian?
it is the v briten
Thats like saying Alexander Graham Bell was French.
@@JT-si6bl he's not?
Doofus
You can’t even spell it right
"Island of Phillip" ? ? NOT ! 👎👎👎
Why on earth are you calling these bikes "car's"???!! , you need to improve your game otherwise this channel is doomed.
Uglier than an early Buell, but at least Buell actually made true production bikes.
And as far as this channel goes; I can’t stand the computer generated narration.
Terrible.
Best superbike? How many did they sell? Sorry, it can only be the best if the bike was bought and ridden by consumers all over the world. They certainly were ugly, I give them that.
Itu standar mu yang kamu bikin sendiri . st3pid y00u
Sounds like they watched the video John Britten put out in the early days monkey see monkey do ..
I want one of each! I don't even like cruisers, but I'd ride that!
