I'm starting a garden for the 1st time this year. I'm experimenting with several seedling techniques (2 liter soda bottles, mini greenhouses from Dollar Tree, egg cartons, gallon milk jugs and paper towel method- which led me to this video). I put my paper towel in a "Tupperware" type container and it has taken a few weeks for them to germinate. I'm going to try your method of plastic baggies. I like how you taped them to the window - very clever. Thanks for making this video, I wasn't quite sure what to do after they started to germ. in the paper towel. Now they were transferred to the pots and growing well. After the first success, I did some snow peas and saw the sprouts in less just three four days! Feeling comfortable about your method, I bought a bag of lavender seeds from Amazon. Lavender is supposed to have very low germinating rate. just bought a cabin on about 7 wooded acres up against state land this past July and had some "cleaning" to do since the previous owner really wasn't able ( elderly ) to get out in the woodline very much. We rushed out and bought raised beds when it was still thick with snow here and now we are kind of rushing to get some seeds germinating ( yes I went and bought every vegetable and herb I knew we would use ). I remember my grandmother use to just use paper towels and set it in her window sill but the baggie makes sense. Who am I to question a free greenhouse. We started the homesteading lifestyle simply because we just need to step backwards and get back to basics ( i.e. stop eating garbage ). At least this way we know exactly what is in our kids' food.

@mywindowspeaks I would plant them in in when there a inch or two. But depending on the method you use, I would use little cups of soil. Then harden them each day for a week. Bringing them out in the sun for a few hours a day and back in.
Thank you sir! Will be trying this out tomorrow with my fig seeds. I just got into planting recently so I don't know much. Even though this looks super simple I still worry i might mess it up. I will give it a try and cross my fingers!

I started out germinating with just a damp paper towel and I saw most seeds start to sprout. I watered it before work but when I returned home from work the paper towel, seeds and sprouts dried out. I was unsure if they would grow any more but I dampened it all again in hopes they would continue and grow again and it worked. But went to work as usual and same thing happened. Now I am unsure if they will grow! I planted what I saw sprouted and will wait. I am hoping to try this method to keep more moisture and grow spinach and micro greens!
Excellent information, Thankyou for sharing. I also am looking at expanding my garden and was looking at simple but effective methods of seed germination. As some seeds you purchase you only receive a few so you have to make sure your success rate is good. Yes some seeds take longer to germinate ie: capsicum seeds. Thankyou again.
So you wait for it to show green before you remove them? I have alot of them where the roots are just starting to show growth and I can even smell them ! Just not green yet
Question,? Would it hurt to put a piece of the paper towel along with the seed root into the soil rader trying to detach the rooted seed and breaking off the root I figure the paper towel piece will desolve in the soil in time being degradable etc.?
Hi awesome video I did some chilli peppers and in a few days I got all germinated, can I do it with rose seeds,I'm from the Caribbean so the weather is different Thanks a mil
Most seed doesn't like light to sprout. Yet it seems to work. A black sheet around the bags might speed the process up. I set my warmth loving seeds (like tomato) on the stb (TV decoder, modem will also do) they germinated in a day this time!
Thanks for sharing your method. I've germinated my bell peppers and some beans seed few weeks back using the paper towel method but not sticking them on the window and it worked. however, im having a hard time germininating my bittermelon and calamansi (Phil lime) seeds. Maybe too much water on the towel as Ive noticed molding? I will try your method of placing the ziplock on the window. Maybe the sun will have an effect on the seeds. Thanks again.
Very good video, I am watching for do my biology lab in home, I have a question, when I put my seed in the plastic bag, I have to add water in the next days or just the first day?
If the paper towel is damp enough, the should be all the water you need to germinate the seed. Iv never had to add water. Great question and thanks for commenting!
You can just leave the bag in the window? No need to re-wet the paper towel after a few days? It’ll stay moist right? I’m so excited to try your method and your tray cups are brilliant!!
Thank Niki, yes I dont ever reopen the bag. Iv never had a problem with it drying out. Always stays moist, its like a mini greenhouse. Good luck and thanks for the question.
I looked up to see if someone else is doing this. I started doing it randomly and it's been very effective yet I don't know what to do after it germinates and it germinates very fast!
Just one sprouted seed per cup? And do you move them into a bigger container to get slightly bigger before the ground or right into the ground after they’ve sprouted in these paper cups? Can’t wait to plant my window hanging seedlings tonight!
Just curious...would it help the seeds to germinate more quickly if they were soaked in barely warm water for 8 hours, then put in baggies on damp paper towels? I have no idea and wondered if someone on here or yourself could give an educated answer. Thanks. Super towel/baggy method. Gonna do it.

hi I like the way you germinate the seeds my question is can I do that with the outside of a real Strawberry in a Ziploc bag ??? ^~^ just to see what might happen Thank you have a great 🧓🐟♎🕊️🍒on top
I'm not sure I understand the question, do you want to germinate strawberries from the seeds on the berries you have? If that's the case, then for sure. Give it a go!
I've always heard light isn't necessary for seed germination (in fact dark is supposedly important). Though it does seem cool to see them grow this way
It's more about temperature than light - heat from the sun or another source kick starts germination. In some specific cases seeds may need darkness, but you'd have to check which. From what I can tell vegetables need light, but flowers do better in the dark. Just depends.
@@amariahg5450 - Thanks. I just had some pepper plant germination fail on a heat mat using a damp paper towel in a baggie method (used that method many times on other strains), but when put into seedling mix they sprouted just fine. So I guess the medium matters too
Two comments; 1) When you squeeze out the paper towel the moisture content in the ziploc bag isn't going to be sufficient to germinate the peas if they are dry seeds, 2) What's the role of light in germination? I mean why stick it to a glass window to get sunlight?
I already have carrot seeds that I germinated in a baggy. I see the sprouts after 5 days. I need to know when and how to plant the sprouts in soil in a pot.
Great video! Good tip about not getting it soaking wet. I'm getting confused about the lighting though. Some say to put in a south facing window for light and some people say to put it in a dark place. Which is it?
Its heat, dark warm place or in a sunny window. Iv never tried the dark warm place before, maybe I will. Remember when you plant a seed in the ground, it's the heat of the sun that draws it up.

Courtney...they don't want you to fail they're only showing you what methods work best. You have to take into acct how much attention you pay to the seeds elevation, the types of seeds....there's many things that go into this....allot of times they had allot of failures also and they don't show those they show you what succeeded and that's what method they use now. 🙂 Keep trying until you find what works where you live that's what nature does too
Hi Dave, I am about to try to germinate some kale, tomatoes and chili peppers! Thanks for the ideas, will try it out.
Good luck! You should have alot of success with those seeds!
I cannot believe I didn’t think of this method. Thank you. I learned this is grade school with beans and I don’t get why I didn’t apply it. Again thank you for this upload haha
No problem, glad you enjoyed this and hope it works out for you. Thanks for commenting!
just bought a cabin on about 7 wooded acres up against state land this past July and had some "cleaning" to do since the previous owner really wasn't able ( elderly ) to get out in the woodline very much.
I germinated lemon seed. I already have them in 1 gallon pots
I did the same thing but the lemon trees attracted so many bugs.
Thank you for sharing this video. Very helpful, and very simple.
Thanks for sharing your experiences during this pandemic. It helps to know that I can do something with my mask on to the store to buy things.
Your welcome, good luck and thanks for commenting!
Very informative. Thanks for making this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am using Hot Pepper seeds like your idea of taping the Bag to the window, My window faces the east where the sun rises every day and should work out greatThanks for sharing etc
Thanks for watching! Hope it all works out well!
Great video! Going to try this so I can start my veggie garden!
thanks for showing us your methof of the window it is an excellent way

@@WELSBYROOTS I am trying this window taping method with mt Carolina Hot Pepper Seeds and trying some using the double Solo cup Seed starting in the potting soil also And see which works best its now the end of Juns I got a late start this year but theres time still to put my pots out doors till Sept, If it still stays warm here etc Thanks for sharing etc.
Excellent idea taping them to the window!
When using the ziplock method, I leave my bags unsealed. I find that this way prevents mold. I also put the bags in a box or cabinet, they don’t require sun that early. This is only from my experience, I live in Florida. Thank you for your videos and I love your content!
I have never tryed your way before, I will have to pay around with it. Thank you for commenting!
@@WELSBYROOTS I have a question for you. This is my first for the tender sweet carrots in the ziplock. I started them 2 days ago so, today they look like tadpoles. When do I plant them and how far down in the soil?
@mywindowspeaks I would plant them in in when there a inch or two. But depending on the method you use, I would use little cups of soil. Then harden them each day for a week. Bringing them out in the sun for a few hours a day and back in.
@@WELSBYROOTS Got it, thanks!!
Awesome job. Great video. Thank you for teaching me something new. I appreciate it.
Im you enjoy it! Thanks for commenting!
Thank you sir! Will be trying this out tomorrow with my fig seeds. I just got into planting recently so I don't know much. Even though this looks super simple I still worry i might mess it up. I will give it a try and cross my fingers!
I'm a new subscriber and I love the way you germinate that seeds I learn something new , thanks for showing us your technique about how start seeds from the beginning 👍👌✌🏻🖐 greetings from Sacramento Ca
Thank you for sharing sir how many days before sprouting seeds
I’m germinating lentils and in the first 13 hours, I already see small roots
Awesome!
My seeds started get the green stuff so I transferred it over to a container with the paper towel and next day, they are growing upwards !
Will this work for marijuana seeds
Miguel Ochoa yes
So you wait for it to show green before you remove them? I have alot of them where the roots are just starting to show growth and I can even smell them ! Just not green yet
Those Kale seeds are so cute❤️I use tweezers to pick up strawberry seedlings.
Great tip, thanks for commenting!
The way you say "out" makes me think you're Canadian. Regardless, taping them to the window is a very clever idea - thanks!
Glad you enjoyed this, hope it works "out" for you!
bellofthedesert the snowshoes leaning on the wall are another clue.
@@libbyworkman1666 ha I didn't even notice them.
Nice video - thank you for the tips.
New subscriber here. Love this, and thanks for posting!
I'm glad to hear that! Thank you for commenting and subscribing! Hope it works out for you!
Thank you for the video I am going to try your germinating style today.
That's great, good luck!
Question,? Would it hurt to put a piece of the paper towel along with the seed root into the soil rader trying to detach the rooted seed and breaking off the root I figure the paper towel piece will desolve in the soil in time being degradable etc.?
I’m going to try it. I was wondering the same thing.
Thanks for the video …does it matter if the seeds are dry or straight from the fruit
Thank you! I couldn't remember all of this for the life of me haha
Hi awesome video I did some chilli peppers and in a few days I got all germinated, can I do it with rose seeds,I'm from the Caribbean so the weather is different
Thanks a mil
I heard that it's good to open the bag each day to get fresh air in for a few minutes so that it will prevent it from dying.
Thats something you could try, Iv never had to do that. I would also be careful not to dry it out.
Most seed doesn't like light to sprout. Yet it seems to work. A black sheet around the bags might speed the process up. I set my warmth loving seeds (like tomato) on the stb (TV decoder, modem will also do) they germinated in a day this time!
What if you don't have a window with direct sun light
Do you use used toillet paper to save on compost?
Crossing my fingers for a very late round of snaps (I'm in 6a), thanks for posting!
Glad you enjoyed this, hope it works out for you and the sun takes care of the mold problem.
@@WELSBYROOTS I hope so too. I'll let you know. Take Care.
Keep it up.. 👍🏻 thanks for the vid and info!
Thanks hunky RUclips daddy, I'm about to be up to my eyes in plants this summer.
Good eating!
Tommy M thirsty
You can just leave the bag in the window? No need to re-wet the paper towel after a few days? It’ll stay moist right? I’m so excited to try your method and your tray cups are brilliant!!
Thank Niki, yes I dont ever reopen the bag. Iv never had a problem with it drying out. Always stays moist, its like a mini greenhouse. Good luck and thanks for the question.
This is so cool. Are there any seeds that you have found that don't like this method?
Wow what a great video!! Thank you
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for commenting!
Thanks for the video, it’s really useful I’m trying it out right now, hope it will work with Viola and Pansy flowers too :) fingers crossed
Good luck and thanks for commenting!
Awesome!!! Thank you sooo much!!!
Your welcome! good luck!
I germinated carrot seeds like crazy with your help thanks.. now how to plant them??
Even with Coronavirus you can still be a farmer. HI i bought 2 pounds of strawberries from a local farmer here in my area they have a trailor in town every season. Smaller in size than usual but i took them home and the first thing i did was take off as many seeds as i could -got 45. and im always saving pepper and apple seeds Macntosh my favorite but they only grow in my state and Michigan and Washington But our s are the best..what soil should i get and where do I get it? Thank You.
hi I like the way you germinate the seeds
my question is can I do that with the outside of a real
Strawberry in a Ziploc bag ??? ^~^ just to see what might happen
Thank you have a great

I'm not sure I understand the question, do you want to germinate strawberries from the seeds on the berries you have? If that's the case, then for sure. Give it a go!
I need to try this
I've always heard light isn't necessary for seed germination (in fact dark is supposedly important).
So I guess the medium matters too
How long did it take for your carrot seeds to germinate?
Two comments;
1) When you squeeze out the paper towel the moisture content in the ziploc bag isn't going to be sufficient to germinate the peas if they are dry seeds,
2) What's the role of light in germination? I mean why stick it to a glass window to get sunlight?
Great video. This is my first time starting with seeds. It's a bit intimidating but this video and others are giving me confidence. Thanks
I felt the same way when I started, especially when watching the so called experts. They make everything way to complicated, just have fun with it!
Do you water to the cups before/after you plant?
I already have carrot seeds that I germinated in a baggy. I see the sprouts after 5 days. I need to know when and how to plant the sprouts in soil in a pot.
Doesn’t the seeds need air circulation?
Nope, its perfectly fine.
I use soft tip paint brush to poke in a soil and lift and place delicate seed sprouted into the cups.
Thanks! Great tip!
Thanks for this great video...

What do you do if you find cotton like webbing in the plastic bags? That’s what I have in my onion seeds that just sprouted today
Can you tape the bag of seeds to a window that gets direct morning sun or should they be kept out of direct sunlight?
How often do you water them after you transplant them?
