So helpful! Thank you especially for the tip to mix the potting soil in a bowl with water before filling the trays

This is helpful; I have a whole box of seeds that are leftover from previous years, so instead of planting them in the Spring and losing precious days waiting to see if anything comes up, I am going to test them now.

Erin, don't do them all. Unless u plan on buying more later. Seeds r going 2 cost more in the future. Also, when u do them not all germinate the same time even with same varieties.

I love using a spray bottle with water 2 dampen the seeds in , this way it doesn't over flow plus dislodge the seeds or sink them in deeper.

Good idea for seeds in the spice isle at the grocery store

I use condiment cups. I melt one hole in the lid.
I use both paper towels and coffee filters. I cut them into circles that fit in the container and sandwich the coffee filters inside the paper towels. If the paper towel isn't there the water pools too much. The filters aren't absorbent enough. The roots don't stick to the coffee filters like they do the ppr towels. Bigger seeds I use my sprouter or a jar or whatever. Works great so far.
Ah I see u had the too wet problem. If I put too much water in my cup I just add another paper towel circle until the moisture is just right.

I did this test with some old endive/chicory seeds. Had 4 varieties, not sure the age, one packet was a dud, the rest were so so but I transplanted the ones that germinated. Thx for your videos!

A beginner question - for larger seeds, does it make any difference if they are planted with the radicle pointing upwards or downwards?

I don't think it does - they find their way up no matter what. That said - I'd probably point them all up anyway - not sure what that says about me :)

Greg, I had a sad feeling 4 those Tom seeds u threw 2 the side. Yes, mayb u didn't want them but they r alive and wanting 2 produce food 4 someone. Many Maritimers starting toms now because they have a greenhouse.
I'm happy 2 see u trying again this yr though with the peppers.
R those Bootstrap Farmers seed starter containers 4 windowsills? I was in CT 2day and all they have r those ugly black flimsy ones. If we r still going 2 use plastic, then make it strong at keast so it last 4 yrs!
