Try using coffee filters. The roots tend to have a more difficult time getting stuck in the fibers and they stay fairly moist without drying…even in direct sunlight. I have done this with marigold seeds and you can easily removing them without damaging the roots. I use the cone shaped filters and place them inside like I’m making a pita. I’ll also inflate the bag so the sprouts have plenty of space to grow without being squished by the bag and paper being compressed together. Sort of like a mini greenhouse.
I use this same method with one major exception. I prefer to fold toilet paper. It is easier to remove seed or I plant the paper with the seed. Usually I also space the seed so it is easy to separate them or to clip between them for planting.
Excellently done and without the annoying "background" music some people seem compelled to include. As for me, being someone hard of hearing, and wanting the information instead of the "music", I tend to mostly ignore the youtubers who include the so-called background. You earned a sub from me. Thanks for the great information. Oh, and I like that you don't seem to feel the need to have your picture going constantly in the corner of the video obscuring the facts. :)
I love the germinating process! 💜Seedlings are so precious... each one you care for will give back so much, whether beauty, food, or medicine. 😌I'm in awe each time I work with seeds every year! 🙏🏽
I recently saw a video very similar to this technique, but they advocated toilet paper as opposed to paper towel, as it didn't grab the roots so hard and was more likely to just disintegrate, as it should ~ being t-paper! I'm going to do some old seeds with this technique today. Also, my daughter does this with avocado pits. I never had luck with the toothpicks and the bottom in water technique. She had me put them in wet paper towels into a baggie into a sunny spot and forget about them, and now they're the only ones I've ever had survive into plants. I really love planting and gardening, and love these kinda vids. :)
I LOVE the troubleshooting tips! 😄 My first time doing this and I think some have been sitting in the paper towels TOO long [ 12 days now ]. going to remove and plant today and feeling hopeful after watching this video, if they are tangled or grew through the paper towels. Thanks! 😁
@@MKPhilippines Yep! It is a ver disheartening experience, I know, BUT I am much more encouraged and inspired today because after numerous trials and experiences, I am germinating more and more seeds! 😁
You are a great teacher! I'm a beginner at Hydroponic, but I believe this method will work. Do you leave them outside after you plant them in the dirt? Thank you for the video, extremely helpful. 👍
I'm usually using this technique early in the season to start the transplants that will be placed in the garden in a few months. But if the conditions are warm enough, you can certainly place the seeds directly outside as they germinate. Thanks for watching! Paul
Can you plant them directly into the ground. For some reason my Korean cucumber seeds did not grow this year. I bought them fresh this year from Amazon. I bought them last year and they grew well
Can I ask a question please. I have just germinated some seed according to your instructions. It’s about watering. I usually water from the bottom but as these seedlings are small I have given a bit of water at the top. I don’t want to overwater. What do you do?
Hi Marilyn, a good solution is to just use a spray bottle and mist them until the top 1/8" is wet. That's gentle on the seedlings without the chance of overwatering them. You may have to spray them a couple times a day but once they get large enough, you can switch over to regular watering techniques. Thanks for watching! Paul
Hi John, some seeds can germinate as quickly as three days while others can take up to 20 days but I find the average is usually about a week depending on the temperature. Thanks Paul
Yes Ananya, absolutely. When the roots are imbedded in the paper towel, you can just plant it and the roots will easily grow into the soil. First though, just try to separate as many of the seedlings as you can so you aren't planting them all in the same spot. Thanks Paul
Hi, I just use a sharpie and write on a small piece of paper what it is and tuck it in as I'm folding the paper towel over. It will deteriorate over time but it will stay legible by the time the seeds germinate. I also use the lid from a yogurt container and cut it into squares for labelling. Thanks for watching! Paul
@@GardenWellEatWell thank you for your response. I have tons of yogurt lids. I’ve been saving the yogurt containers to use to plant small vegetable seedlings in for starters. I just use an electric drill to drill holes in the bottom of the container and then I use the lid to keep it from leaking everywhere. I really like to share extra seedlings with friends and neighbors and this is a no cost way to do that. I really like your method of starting seeds.
Just found this channel, the narrorators voice is soothing. I think I'll stick around.
Straight to the point, no annoying music ,and a nice soothing relaxed voice! Thank you for a great video
Thanks for the kind words Lorraine...glad you enjoyed it!

Good video!
My mom used the same method of checking seeds 30 years ago, only back then there was no paper towel, she used cheesecloth.
Perfect timing! I did exactly this with sunflower seeds and now I will try to save as many seeds as I can..I can't wait for your next video!
I need to do this with my sunflowers

Great idea . I have had numerous times where seeds have failed to germinate and this look perfect for avoiding the problem.
I always had issues with seeds coming from online stores and feel so disheartened when they dont grow

What about crops that do not like to be transplanted, like carrots for instance? Will this method work if you plant them the earliest?
Whenever I do this paper towel method, I only see fungus growing there instead of the seeds.
Maybe it's because I live in a tropical place ?
I need to try this. I tried to get a bunch of old seeds going in a germination tray. I got mostly nothing going into week 2. Thanks
Very good germination process.
Great video, thanks.

@@GardenWellEatWell Thank you so much for replying. It is exciting to see the seeds germinate this way,

io uso la carta igienica che si strappa senza problemi
Thank you for showing how to do this as well as how to unf*ck it, like many of us will do once or twice.
