    The woo-woos went back to 1974/75 performances of Dark Side and Roger had his female singers harmonize with either him or Paul Carrack or Doyle Brahmall II or Jonathan Wilson (recent tours).
    Only the live performances from 1977 was not with backing vocals nor was David Gilmour's solo tours of 1984 and 2015/16. He did jam on the track for 8-12 minutes, depending on which performance you heard.

    Great video! I own it on CD and bought the remaster version on vinyl. I'll probably seek out an OP before it's too late. This was my first time seeing Pink Floyd, 1988 at Mile High Stadium. 4 days after my 18th birthday. I just brings back memories no matter what version I listen to.

    • @InfectiousGroovePodcast
      @InfectiousGroovePodcast  3 года назад

      And that's the best part, right? No matter what, it'll bring back memories.
      Having said that, I do strongly recommend finding an original before pricing gets out of control. The did reissue the original version last year and it's identical to the OP, so that should be easy to find.

    I knew the album as my dad had the cd which I did listen to a lot. Bought the remix so I could have a copy. I had both versions on my phone and I thought I was going nuts when the remix songs came on. I listened to them one after the other to kind of do a comparison and found a few changes, some I like, some I hate.
    A few noticeable ones were:
    -Learning to Fly has a weaker sounding the remix. The drums in the beginning are toned down so they don’t hit as hard on the new one
    -Sorrow has a longer guitar solo on the remix
    -Time remix the guitar starts sooner and the drums in the beginning I can’t seem to match them up together. Remix has extra drums when played side by side
    -Us and Them remix had a piano intro which was a nice addition
    -Money remix removed most of the quiet middle section with the female acapella and bass solo which is a bummer
    -Another Brick in the Wall remix has extra “Hey Teacher” shouting and it obscures pratts bass slapping between guitar solos
    -Comfortably Numb remix. Lots of changes to his guitar solo at the end. It has a crisper sound but has elements added and shortened. A big one is the “floating guitar” as I call it, is shorter in the remix. It’s not perfect in the original which is why I think he shortened that but that part was really noticeable as it was my favorite part. Also Nick Mason goes ham on the drums during the guitar solo and kind of throws the beat off for 20 or so seconds
    -Run Like Hell remix has additional guitar at the beginning which was a nice touch
    And I think a little auto tune was added to the remixes. His words seem to snap more rather than flow into the next word. I can hear it on comfortably numb the most.
    Overall, the remix has nice crisp sound and is really nice to listen to but comfortably numb and money were the only 2 that really shouldn’t have been touched

    • @InfectiousGroovePodcast
      @InfectiousGroovePodcast  2 года назад

      All of that sounds just about right. The parts removed from Money and the extra bits added to Brick II were enough to turn me off overall. Then there's other things you pointed out like the drums on Learning To Fly being weaker.
      Overall I really wish they hadn't remixed it at all. I would have loved it if they'd just added the extra songs that weren't on the original release. Having said that, I do realize that they're not here to release only what I like lol.

  • @coribald

    it's a fair point about comfortably numb, it's definitely a bit awkward sounding. but if you look at the restored concert film, it's just what Nick is apparently doing during the solo. he seems to be having a moment lol. for better or worse, i think i'd personally prefer an accurate restoration. but in the same vein i totally agree about the money bass solo! for what otherwise seems to be a 'restoration', a cut like that is bizarre!
    having listened to both a bunch, and being a fan of the missing momentary lapse tracks, (and the restored Welcome to the Machine! David's vocal is top notch) i'm definitely enjoying the restoration more. the 80's-style reverb turned way down, and the clarity of vocals, drums, and just the overall sound is a pretty huge upgrade.

    • @InfectiousGroovePodcast
      @InfectiousGroovePodcast  2 года назад +1

      Great analysis, thanks for rhat. This is certainly a "to each their own" situation but I totally get your points.
      I think I'm just so attached to the original that almost nothing was going to be good enough for me lol. I would have loved it if they'd left it as it was but just added the MLOR tracks and Welcome.
      But as you mentioned, many people don't like the overall production on the original. So if they'd done what I wanted, I would've probably been the only person who liked it lol.

    I think this is my favourite video you guys have done so far! Love the comparison, and it helps that I also love the vinyl. I never really played the original Delicate Sound of Thunder much at all (friend of mine owned it on CD at uni years ago, so listened to it a few times then) so when I bought the new version I wasn't "familiar" with the original and didn't notice the changes, so I actually really enjoyed the new rerelease - lovely clean crisp sound. The only bit I don't like is that horrible drum fill in the middle of the solo of Comfortably Numb, but it must have been intentional as the same drum fill is played during the version on the Later Years highlights album (maybe Knebworth?). Clearly the second drummer just getting carried away! Anyway - great vid. Keep 'em coming!

    • @InfectiousGroovePodcast
      @InfectiousGroovePodcast  3 года назад

      Thank you!
      I was thinking about it while preparing for this video and I came to that realization: if you're not overly attached to the original, then this new set must be amazing.
      Having said that, the changes like the one you mentioned with Comfortably Numb are just so unnecessary that they stick out like a sore thumb.
      There's many other things that annoy me BUT that's because I spent far too much time over the past 30 year memorizing every millisecond of the original lol.

    • @nightfall9371
      @nightfall9371 2 года назад +1

      I think I get what Nick Mason was trying to achieve with the fill but it doesn’t really work out so well here. I think he was trying to do higher and lower drums at the same time David is going high and low on the guitar. During the momentary lapse tour he had that drum fill added. If you listen to knebworth, you can hear that it sounds like he has the higher and lower drums down better but it’s still kind of off when listening to it

    • @InfectiousGroovePodcast
      @InfectiousGroovePodcast  2 года назад

      That's a good explanation. I remember watching Knebworth live back when it happened and thinking it looked cool. Then I bought the soundtrack album and hated the fill.

    Great video! I've been waiting for you to do a Pink Floyd episode (btw, I loved the interview with Guy Pratt on the podcast). I think DSOT has always been a lesser played album from my collection simply because how incredible Pulse was. I didn't have any huge issues with the remix although like you pointed out in the video, I really don't know why they changed so much when there really wasn't anything wrong with the original version. Cleaning up a track is one thing, but they really changed the sound on several of the remixed tracks.
    I still enjoyed it, and of course like anything they do PF will always have a great presentation. It's funny how they missed the mark on this remix, but did a great job IMO on the remix for A Momentary Lapse of Reason. I think I would have rather seen them release that on vinyl or the full Knebworth show from 1990.

    • @InfectiousGroovePodcast
      @InfectiousGroovePodcast  3 года назад

      I agree Pulse is superior in just about every way but this one is just sentimental for me. By the time I got the see them in 94, I'd already memorized every micro second of DSOT lol.
      As far as a Floyd episode of the podcast goes, it's kinda tough because Michelle doesn't like them very much and I don't think Kyle does either. So it would be me talking for an hour haha.
      In addition to that, I feel like Floyd would have to be a series of episodes really. I'm gonna have to call in friends to pinch-hit to do some proper Floyd based episodes, I think.

    Been a FloydFan for 45 years and have seen them several times. DSOT is a fantastic live album...one I've been listening to in my car for a few days now. Ordered my reissue about 5 days ago and awaiting it's arrival. I'm a purist and have to have ALL their albums...even have Japanese pressings of a few. I'm taking your comments to heart, knowing if I really agree with you as to the changes,at least I can listen to DSOT Live as it was originally released. both on vinyl and cd. Thanks for your honest opinion. I always enjoy learning from other vinyl officienados.

  • @Dean67

    Those pressings look really cool and certainly the original pressing itself I'd imagine would be a must have for all die hard Floyd fans. That said, I really like the packaging of the reissue and is a nice homage to the original artwork. I've not really properly digested the Gilmore era properly, though the Pulse record got a lot of play on my iPod more than a decade ago - I'll need to get that played again. I also think Coming Back To Life is in my top 10 Floyd tunes, so will certainly need to take another listen to the post Waters era again.

    • @InfectiousGroovePodcast
      @InfectiousGroovePodcast  3 года назад

      The packaging is hands down my favorite part of the new version of Delicate Sound. As far as audio goes, I'll take the original all day.
      As far as their later albums without Waters, A Momentary Lapse of Reason leaves a LOT to be desired in my opinion. The Division Bell is damn near perfect through, in my opinion.
      It's a far stronger album all the way across the board. It's got moments that are "too Dave" for some fans, but I think it's a fantastic album overall. I couldn't agree more about Coming Back To Life as well. That's a really strong, underrated track.

    Can't stand that new remix of "Comfortably Numb". Like you said, that horrid drum freak out during the 2nd solo just spoils everything! I really don't know what they were trying to achieve with it. For the original DSOT version, they must have copied more sedate drum patterns to go over the solo, and that works far better. That original live version of CN is my go to version, and the first version I heard too, so I will always prefer that version. However, I do like all the other bonus tracks from the setlist.

    Genesis remixed Seconds Out and their whole catalog (the original mixes are gone). The Animals 2018 Remix was not that great and neither was the remix of Amused to Death by Roger Waters (James Guthrie altered them worse and re. Was up to Roger he will now use Nigel Godrich for remixing or producing his products from 2014 onwards. The Who remixed Live at Leeds and their catalog and on CD has become canon.

      Personally I love the Animals Remix. I think it's farrrr superior to the original mix but it's just perosnal opinion of course.
