Now, in addition to impressing your friends with a suspiciously strong table tennis game, you can play a song or two on the piano... The people who get into the games that give you real life skills are going to have a hobby-level knowledge of the real thing in the real world as a bonus. A little bit like how a lot of people got semi good at drumming by playing Rock Band a lot. Love when games give us real world skills.

The part with the piano keys not being clearly visible might actually be a good thing. As was mentioned, you learn what keys are where and you automatize your finger placement. So seeing your piano keys is more or less to be used like a quick peek at your key-points (Hehe, no phun intended tho) during a presentation.
Hoping to test this out later this week. My best friend plays a bit of piano, her daughter knows the basics and her mom played the piano properly. And then there is me, who doesn't know a single note on any instrument...

  • @TheDarkness2146

I am a piano player and I very like where VR tech is going. But especially for beginners, I would recommend taking piano lessons with a good teacher! At least for the first 2-3 years to really get the basics down, like reading notes and developing a feeling for correct hand placement. A good teacher is always by your side, will teach you how to play right and will highly boost your progress.
I can imagine learning the piano as an adult is difficult, and at some lessons as a kid I was in tears too, but I think a good comparison is skateboarding. It's a longtime sport and you can never stop learning. If you have the *patience* and especially the *will* to learn it, you *will* learn it and you will progress by time. Today, my passion is improvising and composing on the piano and after 13 years, I'm still learning. I wish you a good journey 🙏🏻

Thanks for your help with setting up the app! I was having trouble getting the passthrough to work but I realized the setting you switch on in Sidequest goes to OFF everytime you reset or turn off the headset! So just means you have to plug into SQ everytime you want to use it.
But yeah it's way better than the janky 3D hands. It's still hard to see your actual hands though, and I suggested to the devs that the keys slowly fade up their glow just before the note so you know it's coming out the corner of your eye, instead of scrambling to get there.
It's so much easier to hit the note once it's already lit up so I just wait half a second with my timing. It's in its early stages but man, this is the future for sure! Augmented reality is definitely going to be a big thing this decade.

Interesting video and thank you for showing how I can enable this for myself. This was the deciding reason for buying an QC2 for myself. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing. There seems to be a few others that are developing piano apps and I agree you need to have a bit of experience to start actually learning rather than just rote memorization.

As a traditional trained piano player (not professional by any means), this seems to be really interesting and I can see it being used to inspire beginners! But I am also a little bit concerned, since this could lead beginners to bad habit and prevent them from progress further

Really like this app! Haven’t tried it yet, but with the new pass through feature, I’ll definitely give it a shot! Thank you!

Thanks so much Cas. I saw your first video about VRtuos so long ago, but for some reason hesitated to set up side quest. This video really gave me the motivation to do it, and I have have VRtuos passthrough installing now. Thanks. I'll let you know what I think once I've practiced a few songs :)

$80-$100 gets you a cheap 61 key midi keyboard on amazon. Totally worth it for this app. It's crazy fun.

Zanarkand is beautiful. But that's the first time I've heard it being played too slowly xD

I tried it once before and I had a hard time using it due to the hand tracking occasionally losing my hand causing me to miss hit keys. I tried it again this time with the AR and it is a very big improvement. The only issue I can see is depending on the level of light in your room. Too bright and you may not be able to distinguish the keys on the keyboard. The fact that I can see my hands does help with this so I think with a bit of practice and muscle memory it shouldn't be that big of an issue.

Thanks for the update vid. I thought the previous (non-passthrough) version was pretty cool, but thought ultimately too difficult without seeing my keyboard or hands. This passthrough version is awesome though. I can finally finish learning Fur Elise!!

First, Congrats to Verstappen ! Second, Chary I never knew you could play the piano ! what a turn on. And that does look like an awesome way to learn if you are tone deaf and have a good memory. I'd imagine if you can already play the piano well (Chary) then the VR would be a distraction.

I already use Paradiddle to learn drumming and maybe I'll try piano next time. This looks really good. VR is just amazing.

that's weird.. your passthrough video/image looks a lot clearer/nicer than mine..
at my quest 2 it looks like I'm drunk.. with weird distortions, which I thought were just because of 4 cameras sampling into one picture..but yours is so nice o_O
