I told him that he was to small to handle the weight, he laughed and said it was for someone else. The someone else was a linebacker for the high school team. I was and still am just Japanese animation fan. That is what we called it back then. He showed me a comic with a large winged man and said here we go. I wish I still had the pictures. They went to the fourth SDCC. The wings were a big hit. So was the rest of the costume. They did an amazing job with limited materials. Wonderful video as always, take care and stay safe.

    Absolutely stellar work! I've always been afraid of using EL panels because I bought one once, and the way it sucked power and was still dim was hugely disappointing. had NO idea I could cut it like that - I was just masking over it with black vinyl! and to think it gets brighter when you cut off more, that's genius! Will have to give this a go again, thank you for being such an awesome inspiration!

    • @alantbaird
      @alantbaird 5 месяцев назад +4

    LED filament is the modern replacement for EL wire. The only reason to use EL is if you need a specific length that you can't get LED filament in as you can trim EL wire where you cant trim LED filament.

  • @Dagdakurai

    It has been years since I have worked with electroluminescent wires or panels, but here are some basics I remember.
    The wires or panels behave from an electrical standpoint more like a capacitor than a resistor. These lights are also not driven via a DC voltage, albeit powered by battery. They usually use some kind of self-oscillating inverter. Generating over a hundred volts AC (can be 400V peak-to-peak) at a few kHz. The 1-2 kHz are also the reason why you often hear the inverter squeak a bit when it is turned on. You can overdrive the voltage to increase the brightness, but you will reduce the lifetime of the electroluminescent material. Depending on the material the colour of the emitted light can be slightly varied by the frequency applied. Try not to use the inverter without a load. The oscillation of the circuit will not be dampened which could kill the inverter. Also look out that all conductive parts on the output are well isolated. If you touch it, it won’t kill you, but it can hurt!
    Because it is usually a self-oscillating (unregulated) circuit made from a few components it is tuned for a certain load. E.g. the driver can drive an element with a few nF of capacitance. The oscillation will happen around the resonance frequency of the circuit. Putting more of the wires / panels in parallel means it will increase (just add up) the capacitance of each element shifting the oscillation frequency.
    Cutting down the panel or shortening the wires means decreasing the capacitance. A panel can be seen as a large plate capacitor. That is also why they can be cut so easily. EL light has some special characteristics, which can not be replicated by other means, and sadly don’t really translate through video. In person it looks quite stunning /eerie.
    Dimming them by controlling the input power of the oscillator is a valid solution. I did it myself a few times till I build a completely overengineered solution 🙈
    Anyways. Nice cosplay, especially for the short amount of time 👍

    Those huge scissors were hilarious! And I had no idea you could just cut EL panels to pretty much whatever shape you want and they still work, that's really cool. The suit turned out great considering the time constraints, and the airbrush finish on the shoes looked awesome! I really like that you put in the comment "sometimes engineering is knowing the absolute bare minimum that you can get away with is" - budget and schedule are both engineering parameters and requirements, and the "best" thing in the world that's too late to be useful isn't "best" anymore. Know your minimum acceptable product, design so you'll at least meet that even when things go wrong, and then everything past that is margin that you can sacrifice to meet the other requirements.

With a lot of projects (and I think Cosplay especially) the 'final' output could ALWAYS be better and it can be very easy to keep working on it forever or put it aside as unfinished to work on later. Having a deadline means it's done. It looks great, everyone sees it and there's nothing to STOP you going back to make improvements if you want to but it's still a completed project. Leather working tools work really well on those foam panels. Love the suit, curious what the power supply looked like

    This is incredibly cool! If you continue to make costumes like this, perhaps it would be worthwhile to make a another form with sanded down "personal areas" off camera, that you can then use on camera? My favourite part how you made the lighting parts of the suit.

    Absolutely loved the process. Didn't care for the hair much. But it's not my channel. The suit over all is awesome!! So very creative. Problem solving is my favorite! Figure it out! Instead of just saying you cant't/don't know how to. The short black hair was what I was most surprised about.

    When air brushing, don’t swivel your wrist. Move your entire arm, keeping the spray nozzle at the same angle relative to the work. Swiveling at the wrist builds up extra paint at the center while making a fainter halo at the edges.

    Have the inverters for EL Wire gotten any better?
    Last time I tried them was 10 years ago, and they made an awful high pitched whine.

    This video gives me a new appreciation for cosplay designers and models. Also how unrealistically proportion the game character is. That transition is quite eye opening.

    • @Twosies20
      @Twosies20 5 месяцев назад +1

      I think part of the challenge is that the character has bare robot arms, but Xyla had to effectively have armored arms, because she couldn't just cut her real arms off for the costume.

      The trick to getting video game proportions is thigh/hip/butt pads and lifts.
      Women tend to be ~1:1 on shoulder:hip, this character is closer to 1:1.4 with what looks like a 36in inseam which makes the legs super long for that torso.
