It certainly has a way of weeding a lot of people out. A hobby requiring one to be a mechanic-computer technician-jet pilot really requires a unique sort of person, from my observation at least.
Those skills and more. The words you would have to string together would be weird as hell if you saw them all. Gotta add 3d printer in there at least! Oh, and video editor!
It's been tryna give me the boot since I was introduced last year having absolutely none of the skills you mentioned nor any of the other ones I need for this hobby! 😂 The only thing I really got going for me is the heavy gaming background that makes flying itself the easy part. Soon as the computer comes out I have to put my helmet on so everyone knows how to speak to me 😂
@@RandoManFPV It's hard to string ALL of the skills together to be really successful in the hobby. I try to take it slow, do my research and just work it all out. Sometimes it's frustrating that I can't fly because my wire soldering skills on the tiniest micro flight controller in the world are terrible and wires break off and I gotta wait for a smaller soldering iron tip and watch 100 videos about how to solder better...
@@mjodr These tiny FC's are hard to solder. I was doing some surface mount soldering a few years ago and picked up a microsope (I have an Andonstar AD407 but many others will work just as well). This made a huge difference in my ability to do the soldering. That and better solder and soldering time on practice boards. I really liked Mr. Steele's soldering tutorial here on YT.
Hey Nate! This mini documentary was really enjoyable to watch. This is really how this hobby is, its all worth it once you are actually flying. Goggles on, drone ready, whether its a whoop or a long range quad, the excitement is always there. Nothing gets the heart racing when you are miles away with a big quad, or at a race competing with your friends, even with the smallest whoops.
I just completed the first semester of my drone course yesterday, so this is a timely upload. Love your point about the headset not withdrawing you from reality
@NateTreme Nope, it's a course offered by my college, covers everything from software and payloads, to flight training and aviation law, to design and fabrication. Out of interest, what course were you thinking of?
Good video. Skills i have learned as a by-product of being obsessed with FPV: soldering, 3d printing and being able to adjust prints, video editing+ photography/videography fundamentals, how to work on/replace PC components (for video editing), how to build my own batteries, and even how to braid as of my last build. Greatest hobby ever, with the best community behind it.
I'd say you've captured why, if you have the patience, a bit of skill, and a willingness and tenacity to learn lots of new things, then it's absolutely an amazing hobby. I've been flying since August and I love it. I have learned so much. But I agree - it is for only for a very few. I'm so glad I became one of them. Keep flying!
There is definitely something about FPV. When you’re in your goggles and you fly over a ridge and a view hits, or when you nail a hard trick twice in a row. Or when you see the spark of interest spread to a new mind. It makes all the frustration worth it.
whatever it takes, find a way to get back in the sky

This was recommended to me randomly. Leaving a comment to hack the algorithm. Super nice short vid, great atmosphere, everything. 2 mins well spent. Very interesting hobby
Like was said in the flowstate documentary, it is an out of body experience. Nice video man! Im new to the hobby (started Sep 2022) and you hit the nail on the head.
This man speaks the truth! FPV is amazing but does require a lot of time, money, skill, knowledge, patience, and a drive to not give up. There will be obstacles, but you must climb those mountains to reap the rewards. Great video, you summed up and captured the hobby very well.
The parts most people hate are my favorite lol. I love the flying too and that's why I got into it but, the engineering behind it is so rewarding and I spend more time designing and building then actually flying lol. Some people like doing puzzles I like designing frames or pcb's, it's almost meditative for me in the same way we get into a flow state when flying the design and build process is just a slower flow to me. I used to build a lot of indoor rc planes and if you think quads are hard try building a 10 gram plane to fly in your living room.
Fpv certainly has its ups and downs, I've been flying for over 8 years now and need a month+ break every once in a while. Getting stressed over your VTX, motors, stack, connectivity, frame, firmware, wires, camera, range, antenna etc etc etc..that leads many people to abandon the hobby when they just try to do too much at once. Good video keeping it real, happy flying mate. 👍
Just keep things flying and you'll get better in no time. There's definitely a steep learning curve, just don't follow the trend of giving up when you find yourself in the pit of despair. If it takes a frankenstein mesh of two builds to stay in the air, do it. You can buy more parts later.
Equal parts science, art, and magic. I LOVE IT. What I love most though is the social aspect. I get to see video snippets of the lives of friends around the planet! I get to visit with friends in far off places without buying a plane ticket. My scientific side loves the detail work from soldering to software configuration and my artistic side loves the videography. When it all comes together well it is indeed magic. Thanks for sharing your adventure. Happy flying amigos!
As long as you are pushing your flying skills you're gonna have crashes. And repairs that seem like big issues now will become easy fixes after you figure em out
Damn!, I was hopping for a video about hobbies, comparison between them and how you come to the conclusion this one was the worst ;) But joking aside, cool video!
I love this hobby a lot , the only time i had my doubts was when i entered professional racing , it hurt my wallet far too much to the point of taking up more of my income than i found ever being comfortable dealing with, even with a propeller sponsor, thats when i draw the line
I'm not a heavy shredder but I got a nazgul last year and been flying a few times a week without any issues. I had a major wreck that dented a motor which I pried back to working order and I've broken 2 arms so if you consider props I'm maybe 50$ in for the year 😊
Yes In the beginning for me there were times when I wanted to give up this expensive hobby. 10 years later, I’m to the point I’m flying by muscle memory along. Still analog, the last couple of years, no major, bust out your wallet crashes. Lol and I fly almost every day. It’s MY therapy!!!
I tell people that Im into FPV drone racing, after explaining that, I tell them its the coolest thing ever and they will %1000 hate it. when I'm excited about getting a 5 min long flight with a new battery, normal people look at me like I'm crazy... then I tell them it only cost 36 dollars for that new battery with tears in my eyes. >:'/
Great video. I had a funny experience, a guy came up to me and said great piloting flying through those trees and what are you watching in your vr headset. I feelt like saying Star Wars, but I tried to explain how fpv works.
Id love it except I cant even keep up with fixing all the crap that breaks goin thru life.... and I cant even afford that...soooo I got a Mini 4 Pro and if I can ever afford the motion controller, and the goggles for 600 bucks, I can "sort of kinda" get the FPV experience...

Yeah the vtx is broken. This was footage of me troubleshooting it. I think the antenna pad is not connected well so I'm not getting full contact between antenna and vtx
you think this is bad try modern project cars. tuning, wiring, mechanical, pain, pretty much the same as this except thousands more expensive and takes up significantly more space haven't flew my drone all year because i picked up project cars instead. sad but still fun
I break less stuff than RC cars and once you are up and avoid hitting anything you tend to break even less. Definitely not a hobby for intellectual morons. If you cant stop thinking you need a challenge to distract you and this is a multi faceted hobby that facilitates brain activity. Knowing how to LOS fly helps tremendously.

is it a Part 107 course? My friend is teaching one of those courses.
@NateTreme Nope, it's a course offered by my college, covers everything from software and payloads, to flight training and aviation law, to design and fabrication.
Out of interest, what course were you thinking of?
@@batmenic365StopMotion I was thinking of a course for getting the part 107 license. The FAA Remote Pilot Certificate for commercial drone pilots
Oh I see the confusion. I live in Canada so our licenses are a little different
I agree... certainly worth it...I never had a hobby before fpv.

I've been in fpv for ten years and I hate it and am still obsessed.
Super addictive once you start you can't stop if you really love it
Bro what. This is the best hobby out there. The knowledge, skills and experience you get from fpv is unobtainable anywhere else

To feel flight without leaving the ground is definitely worth the headaches. Stick with it and it does get easier. 🤘😎
Im 71 and I will admit its a tough row to hoe. But its rewarding whe you succeed. Always a new idea and constant improvement. Nothing like it.
