Why I Sent My Miss America Crown to Space

  • Okay, almost space. Near space. Above 99% of the Earth's atmosphere worth of space. TECHNICALLY "space" is generally defined as the Kármán Line (~330k ft, 60km), although NASA and the US Military define it as 12 miles below the Kármán Line because 'Murica is a rebel. Or something.

    ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL THINGS:
    The scientific payload was an RTL SDR radio receiver recording spectrum data from FM broadcast stations as it ascended. This was a collaboration with my friend (and PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering) Kristina Collins, with the goal of submitting a paper to HamSCI eventually. (Collaboration means she did most of the payload and I did most of the get-it-to-the-stratosphere part)
    We were able to track the payload in real time all the way to 112,00 feet because we flew an APRS transmitter using my Amateur Radio Callsign. This let anyone following me watch it in real time as well, it even flew over one of my fan's houses! If you plan on launching a weather balloon, I HIGHLY recommend getting your HAM license so you can fly with APRS.

      Say, uh, person? Could you just ... pass that to Bill for me when you get the chance? Just when you get the chance’ll be fine. So I’ll just go now... then...”

    Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the crown as it fell was: Oh no, not again!

    I live between 2 airports, and this was giving me a bit of anxiety. Glad to read you actually have to fill out a NOTAM and go somewhere safe to do this. Very cool.

    • @seraphina985
      @seraphina985 2 года назад +12

      For something like this you would have to contact the aviation regulatory authorities in any country even far from airports. The height it climbs to means it is going to enter the Class A airspace which is IFR only so ATC needs to know about all traffic in order to provide separation. But yes though the site only has information for the US and Canada I strongly recommend anyone considering attempting such an experiment contact their local aviation regulator to check their notification procedures. Failure to do this may result in fines or worse actually cause an aviation accident.

    • @LouisBertrandTech
      @LouisBertrandTech 2 года назад +4

      Confirmed: a group of my college students a few years ago did something like this (minus the crown) and needed Canadian ATC clearance. Their ship was a styrofoam picnic cooler, carrying a GoPro and an Arduino with a cell modem.

    • @seraphina985
      @seraphina985 2 года назад +2

      @@LouisBertrandTech I honestly would have expected a formal ATC clearance to be required in pretty much any jurisdiction since they pretty much all follow ICAO guidelines. So for me it was more surprising to learn that the US apparently only requires filing a NOTAM.
      Don't get me wrong as an uncontrolled aircraft that cannot fly a clearance a balloon is obviously a craft requiring a general aviation hazard warning for the area. Still I'd have expected there to be a requirement for approval also though perhaps that is rolled in with the NOTAM filing there.
      I am just thinking of the case where someone intends to release from a site directly bellow or close to a designated airway for example. ATC would deny the clearance in that case though perhaps in the US they would reject the NOTAM filing on the basis of the unsuitable launch site also.
      Admittedly if I could motivate myself to wade through regulations I guess I could clarify how the NOTAM filing process works in the US. It's just that wading through regulations that I'm unlikely to ever need to know isn't overly appealing and well the US is slightly out of range for my Cessna 304 from Europe lol.

      I didn’t catch the whole video, but I was kind of watching out of the side of my eyes while I was working, and I was wondering how you prevent airplanes from crashing into these things. Thanks for letting me know. The thing literally falls out of the sky like a projectile. And it goes up slow I know, but it is not that crazy visible. And what about going up into the clouds, It is not visible at all! Small planes don’t have radar’s on them.

    • @seraphina985
      @seraphina985 2 года назад +1

      @@steveperreira5850 Well it is unlikely that the launch would be allowed in the vicinity of IFR flights (ie aircraft flying by instrument navigation) either that or aircraft would have to be routed around the area. VFR aircraft ie those flying visually are not allowed to enter clouds.

    I know this video is 2 years old, but i just came across your channel today and your videos are incredible. I have been watching one video after another and I just want to say, you are an amazing creator. I watch a lot of videos on RUclips and I will admit, most videos i end up skipping forward and can usually get through a 10 min video in about 2 min. Not yours, I absolutely love love love your videos. Its amazing how you can connect with your viewers on dare I say, an emotional level. Some of your videos have me on the edge of my seat, and yes when I heard that beacon beeping I jumped up and was pumping my fist "yes yes yes". When my wife came to see what was going on I tried explaining what I had just watched it really didn't do you work justice so I started the video from the beginning and now my wife is a huge fan as well. Thank you for doing what you do, you are an inspiration to us all. Today started out not so good for me, but thank you for making it so much better. P.S. I didn't get anything done today. but that's just fine by me. Keep up the good work. The world needs more people like you.

      The crown, falling at terminal velocity would have hit the ground way before the rest of the payload with the parachute. The crown would fall much more straight downwards while the parachute would travel a lot with the wind. They are highly unlikely to land that close.

      to be honest her video was really dangerous that crown falling from the altitude it did made it a lethal object
      she is lucky no one was hurt by her dropping a crown at terminal velocity basically from space in a place ware people could be
      if you are going to send anything to space your suppose to make sure when it comes back down it can't hit terminal velocity all she had to do was just add streamers to the crown that way if it detached as it did the streamers would have created enough drag to keep it from hitting terminal velocity and becoming lethal
      and that is not even getting into what happens if a piece of farming equipment found her crown in the crops or somehow a chunk made it into the food supply and someone eat a piece of glass that was in their corn from her crown
      to be honest again she was really reckless and was only thinking about how cool of a video it would make that she did not think about what might happen if things sent wrong like they did but the outcome was worse
      the fact her crown was never found means someone still could be hurt by it all because she wanted to make a RUclips video

      @@LiftoffLumberjack The force and stress on the balloon is more-or-less equally applied across it entire surface. Barring any defects or encounters with sharp objects, I imagine by the time the balloon fails all areas of its surface reach their breaking point simultaneously, and thus it just tears apart. Also, in the very, very thin atmosphere, the escaping and expanding helium is going to move swiftly outward from it's center of mass, adding to the even destruction of the balloon.
      Also, it's pretty to watch!
