  • The Most Controversial Tripod: War Of The Worlds Explained is a video by pupbenny explaining the H.G. Wells Commemorative £2 Coin featuring a Four-legged Fighting Machine from The War Of The Worlds as well as The Invisible Man and references to The Time Machine and H. G. Wells as a futurist. The author of these Victorian Science Fiction novels was honoured by the Royal Mint but the design of the Four Legged Tripod drew some criticism.
    H.G. Wells The War Of The Worlds is a story by British author Herbert George Wells in which alien visitors from Mars arrive in space capsules first in Horsell Common near Woking in Surrey. This is at first thought to be a meteorite by the English men that discover this cylinder with the astronomer Ogilvy exclaiming that the chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one. However, as the Narrator explains, Martian creatures soon make themselves present before using a Heat Ray to disintegrate some of the English people. They soon begin using massive Tripod Fighting Machines and using weapons such as the heat-ray as well as the black smoke begin to lay waste to the British army, leaving people such as the Artilleryman and the protagonist separated from everyone including his wife, and with the defeat of the ironclad torpedo ram HMS Thunder Child the Royal Navy as well succeeding in defeating the biggest Empire in human history, The British Empire at the height of it's power in the Victorian age in which H G Wells wrote the novel. The Martians very quickly establish a dominion over man as they spread their Red Weed across the Earth reaching the capital city of Britain London the Fighting-Machines cause great devastation. Other methods of transport the martian invaders use include the Handling-Machines as well as the Flying-Machines.
    On paper there have been many illustrated editions of the story, the first of which were done by Warwick Goble in the original serial version. Relatively soon after, Alvim Correa drew his illustrations. Henrique Alvim Corrêa was a Brazilian artist who traveled to London in 1902 to present H. G. Wells with drawings that he'd done for the story of The War Of The Worlds and there have since been many been many illustration versions by artists such has Edward Gorey and Lou Cameron. There have also been audio adaptations of HG Wells War Of The Worlds, including the infamous 1938 Orson Welles War of the Worlds radio broadcast and the iconic 1978 album Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds. There were likewise many attempts to bring the story to the big screen as well, including by icons such as Alfred Hitchcock and Ray Harryhausen, but it wasn't until The War Of The Worlds 1953 film by George Pal that this was finally accomplished. Later on, there's been Steven Spielberg's 2005 War Of The Worlds starring Tom Cruise and The Great Martian War 1913-1917 documentary style drama set in World War 1. Recently, the BBC made a TV miniseries the BBC British TV series war of the worlds and FOX, Epic and StudioCanal did a TV series starting in 2019 called War Of The Worlds that claims to be adapted from the source material. There has also been several war of the worlds movies recently as well, including 2021 War Of The Worlds, also known as Alien Conquest, which had a sequel called War Of The Worlds Annihilation and this year in 2023 War Of The Worlds The Attack. There have also been many indie games and art with a survival horror war of the worlds 2005 game which will be a multiplayer survival game based on the Tom Cruise War Of The Worlds movie as well as a faithful adaptation of HGWells War Of The World game set in the Victorian era by GelatoDev and TeamGreen with Team Green also making their survival game a multiplayer war of the worlds game as well and there's another announced in 2023 called The War of the Worlds: Siberia. There's also The War Of The Worlds 1913 game which is a worthwhile, fun and nicely stylised adaption of H G Wells The War Of The Worlds.

    It's interesting to consider the reasons this coin was designed the way it was. It is quite an odd choice that inevitably drew criticism. Either way, I still think it's quite a nice coin, even if it does have a four-legged tripod. Maybe even more so because of that? Somehow makes it more interesting to me. Almost certainly wouldn't have done a video about it if it was a three-legged tripod. Interesting to think about I guess lol.

    I agree 100% with the criticism of the quadrapod, because it is a commemorative coin with the purpose to represent H.G. Wells & **"his"** literary works... & the Tripod is iconic to his story.
    Any artistic interpretation of a 3 legged fighting machine would have been acceptable, even if nobody liked the design, because it would have been a representation of the iconic TRIpod.
    Depicting the fighting machine as a quadrapod, makes it more representative to the ATAT of Star Wars, the Goliath of Robotech, or any of the quadmechs of Battletech.
    This design change would be akin to depicting the Mayflower as a submarine or a GR-75 Rebel Transport.
    Yeah... they are both "ships"... but the image of the Mayflower as a sailing ship is iconic, because it historically was a sailing ship.

      It would've been funny if there had been a minting error that somehow made it look like it had three legs. A few years ago there was a 'First World War Centenary Navy £2 Coin' featuring a battleship, however there was a rare error on some pressings of it which coincidentally perfectly made it seem as though there was a flag on it's mast, which was absent from the standard issue. I somehow ended up with both versions just from my casual change lol.

      By the by, I love your channel. Particularly the War of thr Worlds content. • @pupbenny
      @pupbenny  4 месяца назад +1

      @@josecarrales2842 Ha, I just looked up that coin, it's certainly bizarre how the error really does look as though it was designed to be there.
      And thank you very much, I'm glad you like my channel! Indeed, since doing videos that require me to say 'H.G. Wells' a lot, quite a few people have mentioned the "h" pronunciation, which is quite funny to me as I genuinely had no clue about it. I was very confused when it was first brought up. Which is perhaps odd as apparently 'aiche' is also the dominant way to pronounce it here as well. I think surveys have shown only about a 15-25% of the UK population say it as I do, yet it's something I've never noticed before. Now that I know of it, it's as though I'm hyper-aware anytime someone says "h", taking note on how they pronounce it. Interestingly, I was listening to a radio show and one of the presenters pronounced it as "haiche" multiple times, then one time pronounced it as "aiche" which I thought was interesting. Even within a singular person it can change quite a bit.
      I just looked up "world" and turns out that's a UK/US difference too, which is quite a relief to me as when other people have mentioned it I thought I was just pronouncing it weirdly haha. Again, another thing I was unaware of. There's a lot I've learned from doing this!

    He himself actually admits he didn’t properly read the book himself. On the other hand many of the details are spot on so he at least put SOME time in it. Then the rather close resemblance to some other details in the text actually deny the claim of wanting to be original at all cost. As far as the commission goes: They didn’t read the book either but just got glowing eyes from his already established reputation, assuming that is all there was to it. Talent is always less valued then connections, however often the opposite is claimed. We all know what the real world is like. As far as the top hat goes: that controversy totally pales in comparison to the tripod botch up. And indeed: As a coin design it is very effective. But the extra leg cannot be rubbed away. Not literally. Not figuratively.

      It's called a Slig and it's from a game series called Oddworld. :) Though the series, I think, is more commonly referred to by the title of it's first game, Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. It was very popular back in the PS1 days. If you don't recognise it from that, I also have MANY videos on my channel about the series so perhaps you might've casually seen the thumbnails and recognise it from them maybe.

      At the moment I'm not working on any games and have no specific plans to do so in the near future. If I do start making games again, it probably won't be an oddworld game, ultimately. Perhaps in the distant future I might end up doing more, but I don't currently foresee that happening. As for the information, I gain it from any place I can really. In particular, I like reading art books on the games and gain a lot of information from there.

    "ROYAL MAIL!" You are forgiven, some things are just odd. For example, here in Texas we call it the "mail" however it is the "US Postal Service." Most British people I know call it "The Post," whereas it's the "Royal Mail." Perhaps this is a slip of the mind resulting from a "four-legged" tripod's uncanny imagery. 😂

      Ha, I was literally thinking that yesterday or the day before! 'Why is it called the 'Royal Mail' if British people call it "The Post"?' I'd never considered what you just said though, that's a really good point! It's pretty funny how it's the total opposite in America. 😂

      @@pupbenny I enjoy teaching about Britian in my Human Geography classes. It is a case study on similar cultures, cousin cultures, which still have a lot of nuances and right proper differences.
      That is a great place to begin with War of the Worlds when it is adapted for an American audiences. Distances, for example, I have a 30 mile commute daily....and it is through desolate lands. It takes almost a day's travel to leave Texas. I often, when reading the initial book am amazed how people first treat the invasion. It's like it is so far away and those initially unaffected are oblivious. Here in South Texas the distances would worsen that.
      You know, I have an Indie comicbook. I think I will make a story arc based on War of the Worlds, I call it "War of thr Whirls" and set it in South Texas.

    • @pupbenny

      @@josecarrales2842 You might as well do a story arc based on War of the Worlds if you wanted to considering it's public domain and anyone can do anything they want to with it haha.
      I think one of the most fascinating things about War of the Worlds is the fact that there's so many versions which can consequently be compared. I often say 'comparison is the most beautiful thing' which is a pretty odd saying, I suppose, and probably not entirely true, but what I mean is comparing things is something people are very interested in and attracted to. I came up with this phrase after being fascinated as a child looking at the covers of Star Wars Battlefront 1 and Star Wars Battlefront 2, one featuring a Stormtrooper and the other a Clone Trooper, and being fascinated at the differences between them. There's something attractive about things being similar yet different, and War of the Worlds is practically a breeding ground for such comparisons. (I suppose it's probably also the reason the 'Tier List' became a fad on RUclips.)

    This design is a very interesting the design, I mean it's not book accurate, but I can see how it could function, I could see it moving like a spider along the hillside or towering over London town, it's in some ways very imposing. Like I'm working on my own War of the Worlds sort of film and I have my own designs for Tripods some taking inspiration from other artists and some from HG. Wells concept of the Tripods and some of The Martians themselves, I've even come up with my own Ideas of How the Martians work and operate, Unfortunately RUclips does not allow us to show pictures on here so I can't really show some of the concepts on here, Kind of a long comment but, Just had to say it.

    I'll be completely honest, I do not mind the quad-pod at all for several reasons, and here's one of em --> If a Tripod gets a leg blown off then it's fallin down " *TIMMMMMMMBEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* " style and it's done for unless it can either detach its head and becomes a UFO or it arrived on Earth with electricity legs like the ones from the 1953 movie; with four legs, if one gets blown off, it can still walk effectively.

    • @ShinyHelmet
      @ShinyHelmet 4 месяца назад +1

      But if designed to use four legs, they would be placed proportionately around the body. Losing one leg would mean it would be off balance and likely to topple over anyway. If not that then it would be unable to move due to an offset to its centre of gravity. In a maintenance capacity, four legs would require more work to keep them in good order than just having three, and when you're invading another planet, overall mission costs can spiral so keeping maintenance costs down is a big factor in your design process.

    • @tommyfox854
      @tommyfox854 4 месяца назад

      @@ShinyHelmet I have no shame in admitting you have some seriously valid points Helmet, those are indeed some valid points.
      And my apology if this part of my reply comes off as me havin a stick up my ass about this, I really don't mean for that message to come across. But I always imagined the walking stile of the minus one legged quad-pod to be similar to that of animals (most notably house cats and dogs) whenever they're missing a leg; I can also imagen that the area of the theoretical quad-pod where the legs meets the hip/body area are on a rail of sorts, kinda like how us humans are able to twist our legs 90 degrees where the femur/thigh bone meets the hips, these quad-pods can rotate its legs too the area needed most for better maneuverability. . and when a leg's blown off it can switch too the classic tripod design we all know and love and keep killing as many people as possible. Hell, it might even go as far as being able to straight up eject the broken leg and fully become a tripod, why lug around a broken bit of equipment when your war machine is able to maneuver around quite well with just three legs, plus it's not like the target planet's militaries are gonna be able to capitalize on the now obtainable alien tech when it's severally struggling to just survive, on top of a even more theoretical possibility of the invading aliens having drones that can pick up the leg pieces and bring it too repair stations well into the secured alien territory where they set up temporary repair stations.

    Well, even if the design contradicted the Fighting Machine's legs from the book, I don't actually mind it. Many people think of War of the Worlds as just tripods from Mars or space attacking Earth and finished off by bacteria, but it wasn't just that as War of the Worlds is about the danger of ruthless imperialism, abuse of technology and evolution. You can make an adaptation of the original book by, for example, replacing Tripods with Flying Machines as their main attack force, redesign the Martians to appear cybernetic instead of organic tentacled blob creatures or don't feature them if you want to have all machines as unmanned automated drones, or change the color of the Red Weed to be blackish purple, as long as it's more faithful to the book.

    Everyone is complaining about 4 legs not beibg accurate to the text, yet no one complains that no adaptation depicts a tripod locomoting like "a milking stool tilted and violently bowled across the ground." There’s room to complain about 4 legs AFTER someone succeeds in accurately animating this fundamental trait of a Martian tripod. Or how about heat rays that don't project light but just cause things to burst in flames with no visible beam. That is also fundamental to the war machines. Hmm, license is taken ther too.
