The diesels are on the train for dynamic braking and fuel conservation purposes. They are freight diesels, not passenger diesels, and so DO NOT generate electricity for the passenger coaches; there are generator cars in the consist for that purpose.
First clip of my 10 day long chase of the Big Boy through the Southwest. Enjoy and stay tuned =)

The old boys who created that whistle knew how to reach into your soul and grab it.
Absolutely agree 💯 the sound is so haunting!! Love it💕
Oh yes. I'm in the UK and very envious of the steamers you had over there in the US, and those whistles, especially that deep Big Boy whistle, and your words describe it perfectly. It does reach into your soul and hug it.
@@richardarcher3435 Hey now don't be envious! In a way, that whistle can trace its origins back to the very birthplace of Steam Power as we know it after all. 😉
True, except I was pleased it stopped at the crossing so one could hear the glorious shunt, shunt of the pistons.
This train has a soul…
Congratulations to the US Railroad enthusiasts and engineers for the reawakening of the iconic "Big Boy" #4104. What a great performance!!!
#4014*
Being someone who grew up watching videos of these titans ruling down the tracks and always hearing how they’d kept 3985 in service but not a Big Boy make me hope and dream that someone would come along and do it. Now that they have, all I want is to get a cab ride and maybe one day, drive that big beast over Sherman Hill.
@@bluefoxy6478 nobody asked for you to do that
Het is ook alles goed wat je wilt bereiken van het er mee alles naar zin hier
what if the engineer accidentaly fell out of the locomotive?
Just imagine hearing this **beautiful** loco when you're waaaaaay out on the prairies!
That wonderful whistle in the distance!
Or in bed on a warm summer night waiting to fall asleep!
imagine being a train spotter, now knowing that it's in the area and then you miss it and only see it from great distance, or only read about it hours or days later :D
Just imagine being clueless 4014 was there, going about your business, cursing the train crossing, then boom. I can only imagine the jaws dropping.
I imagine people staying clueless and not realizing this was special.
@@PatchinPictures yup😂
I live in Las Vegas not far from where this crossing is. I was home that day, and I thought “I hear a train...is that a train? Why do I hear a whistle and not a horn?” Had no idea what that was until I saw this video
I'm one of those people who actually enjoys getting stuck at crossings.
Like that stupid gross bum on the bicycle riding the tracks like an idiot at the end.
I stood 15 ft from the track as this beast rolled by Northwood Iowa in 2019 at about 25 mph and it absolutely took my breath away and i still get goosebumps watching these videos
He was built for one purpose and one purpose only... To help achieve victory against the axis powers. I say he more than help achieve that. The tons of equipment Big Boy hauled is... unimaginable. When that whistle sounds... That's the sound of victory.
Even after that, they handled a lot of America's postwar traffic (and during the Korean War, let's not forget). I never cease to be amazed how few Americans even now know these engines even exist, their role was critical.
When Hitler’s spies told the German government about this locomotive they didn’t believe such a thing was possible to build.
@@kurtvonfricken6829 German rail 'strategy' was very different from the US: the former used 'little and often' for their trains, rather than the US 'one enormous train not so often'! Totally different ideals.
@@paulcaswell2813
Didn’t have the Rocky Mountains in Germany either. And Germany isn’t 3000 miles wide. And they didn’t have to ship things across the Ocean, and I doubt they produced one tenth what the United States did. If you’re going to make stuff you have to be able to move it!
The Union Pacific is the best railroad in the nation! I love how seriously they take preserving history.
The whistle is like Godzilla’s roar. The Big Boy uses it as a show of dominance against the lesser trains.
Union Pacific: Yeah we just need Big Boy to help the main locomotive pull the train for a little while
Big Boy: I AM the main locomotive
Yeah, it's only 12 cars.... that's a light job for a Big Boy.
Its not there to help it's there in case the big boy has an issue. Then it doesn't block the line.
@@troytuckwell3610 The diesel also helps with braking on downslopes, I believe.
The brass at UP NEVER let big boy pull under full power. 99% of the time, the diesel does all the work. It’s been a sham since restoration.
@@ojsefg 1. Why do you claim then don't let her pull? 2. How is her restoration a sham? She steams under her own power. When she came out of the museum pre restoration she couldn't have been fired at all let alone move under her own power.
That steam whistle sounds like spirits cheering from the 1940's.
When Big Boy operates, it truly is one of the grandest sights and sounds in all of America.
It does indeed. All this vid needs is some swing music
Loco provides its own music ;-)
@@thunderbird1921 wow
Absolutely down to the core of the earth~!~
2:12 that low whistle sounds great 👍
Great come back.Thank you all.
What a whistle!!!😃
There is somethin' hypnotic about watching this smokin' whistlin' creature; I can't look away.
I love steam trains and the Big Boy is really amazing!
Such a majestic pass! And the horn sounded amazing!
That's one magnificent beast and a truly amazing engineering accomplishment. Keep on chuggin', 4014.
I doubt very much that the Big Boy even knows it's pulling such a little train ( for it ) it is truly magnificent many thanks to those men and women who worked on her and to Union Pacific management for their backing
It’s like a dragon waking up, and that whistle is waking up the other dragons in the area.
Beautiful old stuff! Sweet memory! I miss those old lovely days! Thank you so much for sharing!

I would love to get an N-scale model of this locomotive. Absolutely beautiful machine.
Locomotive***********
Athearn is making one
They're out there. My grandfather had two that were made by Con-Cor/Rivarossi, along with a huge selection of multiple GS-4's and matching cars. When he passed, I held onto one of the big boy's, and a GS-4 plus the matching 10 car set for the Daylight.
@@UnionPacificRailFanning They already did long ago. I have one from 2015 though it was actually on my wishlist since 2013.
An O gauge from Lionel will set you back $1600+ this year.
So Kool how we're all of the same opinion, "We Love this train!"
That whistle tho...
It’s kinda creepy
This is the best recording I've heard of it so far. Amazing.
Thicc whistle for a thicc train lol
Dark Creed It’s like a haunted engine

Honestly, 4014's steam whistle is a pipe organ on wheels. Thrilling.
I absolutely love ❤️ steam locomotives 🚂 Big boy 4014 is really awesome 😎.
Gotta love that Big Boys whistle
what an incredible locomotive; amazing engineering. Well done to the engineers for keeping it going
Without question the greatest American steam locomotive ever built
My favorite video of the big boy. Inspired me to go see it for myself for four days through Denver two years later.
Great stuff! Sounds oddly like 844's whistle, but I've been told this is the whistle that was on 4014 since her last shopping in the '50s.
A true piece of American history and poetry in motion.
I LOVE THE WHISTLE!
He lives and breathes , no , he really does and that whistle makes the hair on my neck stand to attention . What a magnificent beast from a ( sadly ) bygone age .
Unfortunately where that wonderful piece of history was originally built is now a casino. Thank you for restoring it so we can all enjoy your hard work.
Wait till ya experience seeing one of these up close.... You'll SWEAR the machine alive!!! They must be continuously preserved through the ages of time!
Although i prefer British locomotives, engines like Daylight and Big Boy sure are quite impressive
I used to own a shop right there just past those tracks, too bad i left in 17, glad you got the shot for me! Thank you
I'm speechless. WOW. Very few things are cooler than a steam locomotive, but this one is just beyond words. OMG.
What a Beautiful Beast I'm happy to see it under steam again after all these years
The 4884 must be classed as one of the 8 modern wonders of the world. Its in the same league as the saturn 5 rocket. Truely AWESOME. Many thanks to all the lads who got it back on its feet👍👍👍
You know what . There is something WONDERFULLY PREHISTORIC about that big 'ol engine powerin' down the track. Thank God, it is not an all electric, self-driving, hyper digital, fully automatic, computerized piece of CRAP like everything else these days. Hey Big Fella, keep on rolling down the line and making us all PROUD........
LEGO Needs to make this a set, i mean, it would be nice to celebrate her, she deserves it.
Back to the future 😉 beautiful beautiful train 🚂
I was so freaking mad that morning that I missed it departing. That's my delivery area and the guy that loads my truck screwed up the load and put me waaaay behind schedule. By the time I got up to Western Ave. 4014 was long gone.
Oh, man. sorry about that! :( no favors -ever- for that guy!!!
Dude, that whistle is SICK!!!!! Like seriously, this engine has balls big as church bells.
These old machines are beautiful mechanical art
Wow Great Union Pacific Big Boy
If you're not having a good day, all you need to do is click on this, and a huge smile will break out! Just tremendous. I never tire of seeing her underway.
Big boy's on the roll!
If i were in that cab, i'd be smiling ear to ear the whole way there and back. What a gorgeous machine.
I love seeing the condensation in the cool air, just like my live steamer but sooooo much bigger!
It is great seeing a big boy running. Thanks for great video...
Refreshing to see a steam engine again and its cars not covered in obnoxious graffiti is the best part.
All the trains I see in my area are covered with it.
Steam locomotives were still in use when I was a kid. I miss seeing them and hearing that whistle blow.
I recall the face full of soot and smoke if you were brave enough to put your head out of the window.
I wish i was like Fan Railer. Always Having the Money to Railfan Trains While im stuck here in NY Railfaning Subway Trains. Great
Wow am lucky am also in NYC I see I eternity of P42s I see Amtrak’s a lot of things
Subway trains are fascinating, too. I love all the videos of NYC subways DJ Hammers has posted on U Tube.
Joshuagareth Ureiro I see a lot of p42s dash 8 and dash 9-44cw
You guys see trains?
I like how when it comes to steam locomotives, the UK and Japan went for _fast_ (see: LNER A4 4468 "Mallard" and JNR C62 17), while the US went for *BIG* .
it didnt just go big, it went for p o w e r
History passing by as unaware and unthinking rides his bicycle.
U don’t know me
This train never gets old! I have videos of it on my channel when it rolled through Oklahoma!
People said it couldn't be done, that we'd never see a Big Boy run again. This consist is just a tiny fraction of what that locomotive is capable of pulling. I hope to see a long freight on the end of it one of these days.
Awesome capture. ... rare steam loco hauled passenger coach
wow, better than the video I got of it, but im glad we both got these videos...wish my tripod wasn't partialy broken

I love big boy ❤❤❤😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩
No me canso de mirar esta ingeniería la big boy💪
I imagine How they put sweat and tears into the train
Can't wait til November 5th. He's coming to San Antonio, TX. I'm having the day off of work. It will be on display for about 4 hours. Glad I collect cameras and camcorders, bring it BigBoy. I'm ready for ya. I will look at my ho scale model BigBoy in a whole different way after being next to the real thing.
Really where will it be at do you know
Sunset Station. 350 Hoefgen St.
Shoot. I'm gonna be down there in December
Is there a site I can go to find out when it will be at a certain location? I would have really liked to see it when it came through San Antonio.
I heard Las Vegas had some class acts, I guess Big Boy is now one of ‘em!
Dam, I didn’t know this was in town....I would have gone down to see it in person.
Fantastic video
Still undefeated at all crossings.
That thing is sick..and the whistle was awesome
Watching video of this amazing train will never get boring to me
I live in Vegas. Wish I had seen it. Can't even imagine how awesome it must be to operate such a magnificent machine and I'm a Heavy Equipment Operator (IUOE Local 12).
EAT FIRE!
ROLL COAL!
BLEED STEAM!
Man I caught the side view and was like yes you are a big boy lol too too cool I love seeing steam locomotives still in use power to the Pacific

I wish my Dad could have seen a Big Boy run. He took us to Steamtown in Scranton so we could crawl overr the one that's there. He had the AHM/Rivarossi HO gauge model and put as many cars as our layout allowed behind it every time he could...
He just died too damn soon.
That thing is absolutely sick!
That Steam whistle sounds! Cool!
Got close and personal with 4014 last year in WEST CHICAGO last year when touring thru our area. Parked there for a few days, went a few other towns before leaving. Very, awesome and that's putting it mildly. To actually touch it made you feel very humble and not worthy!!! How does man create something so mighty and fail in small, very important matters! Don't get it!
The UP Big Boy is a beauty. Sure wish to visit the US one day and see it for myself. Also, the whistle on 4014 sounds similar to the whistle on the Big Boy in Train Simulator
Great to see one operating and not just being pushed by a diesel backup.
diesel is there for dynamic braking only!
Old is gold
Those amazing history and the services they provided since their creation.
🎵On the backbone of our nation, you can see us make the climb
We're the Union Pacific, AND WE'RE GONNA BE ON TIIIIIIIME🎵
To think this locomotive + the tender weighs the same as two 747s is astonishing.
