Over a year ago I set out to build the Ultimate 4wd remote Super Tourer and choose a Toyota Land Cruiser 105 as my foundation. I started with a 2000 Landcruiser 105 petrol which is the 100 series with solid front and rear axle. It had a 4-speed automatic gearbox and the six-cylinder petrol engine but within two months I also purchased a Landcruiser 100 series 1/2 cut with a 1HD-FTE engine and an A750 5-speed auto gearbox and had Jason from total care combine the engine and gearbox of the Landcruiser 100 Series with the rest of the Toyota Land Cruiser 105 series to create the ultimate super tourer. Over the past year, I have transformed the vehicle to probably one of the best build Landcruiser tourers in Australia. Follow me and check out what all went into the 4wd super tourer build in this walkthrough video.

Finally, the Walk Through video of my Toyota Landcruiser 105 with 1HDFTE and 5 Speed Auto conversion and 4.2t GVM upgrade is out. I spend over a year building the (for me) perfect Super Tourer and learned quite a few things along the way. What do you reckon have I missed something? Please let me know in the comment section.
Hi. Thanks for the update, long overdue. When I got my pioneer platform I picked 1 size smaller and the new backbone mount system. It gives 30% more more load rating and 100% less wind noise than the big one. Still looks reasonable too. They also now do an air deflector, about time! You haven't done a ladder to get up top?
I think you got it down pat to what you need and what works for you old mate.. as you know we keep changing little things along the way it never ends lol myself just camping set up from truck little camp add on ons to make it all that more simple and fun 😎😎 major mods just stay there and repeat what works ..
na mate use spare wheel to get up and down, need to look in wind deflector just don't want to pay $180 for something which should have worked in the first place and may or may not fix it but probably will end up that way.
Could you not have purchased a Series 100 with the 1HDFTE engine and changed the front axle that is found in a Series 105?
Some links to the various products you've used would be great!
This is not a car. This is a beast on wheels. Congrats for having the patience to create such an off-road animal
105 should have been like that from factory! perfect truck!
yes that would have been nice
So far the best Toyota I have seen in a long time well done to you
Thank you very much....
This is the third time I’ve watched this from start to finish. I recently got my hands on a 1HD-FT converted 105, after a love affair with my thirsty 105 Petty. I can’t wait to do some hard yards in her, and this is the definitive video for upgrades. Thank you.
don't forget to watch the two update videos so you don't make some of my mistakes
Well done mate, ripper car!! I also had a super tourer 100 series, twin locked, 33's, remote resi suspension, bar work, etc etc really was a great car!!!
Best built of the Landcruiser 105 that I have seen so far , every modification has a purpose, contemplating doing one my self, 105 with a new HD-FTE engine in it, love to wheel with you one day and get some advice. Thanks again for all the great videos!
I think it's a perfect choice of vehicle and engine.
The rest is just personal taste and requirements. Which as you rightly say, is perfect for you.
Excellent video best one I have watched and it convinced me to buy a 105 series. I managed to pick up a 2001 4.5 petrol with 220,000 on the clock. I will certainly be referring back to your channel many times while I borrow all of your ideas and create my own touring paradise on wheels. Thanks mate
This video convinced me to do a 1hd-fte conversion on my 105. Thanks- continue the great content.
i was convinced years a go but dont have much money and need to find a 1hd-fte for a good price. i am also thinking about going to a 79 but second hand ones go for as much and a lot of times more then a new ones i seen one almost stock it had an after market bull bar and tray with around 200,000 km on it and they wanted $78,000 for an extra $10k i could get a new one.
With the ebay lights mate, alot of them come from the factory adjusted all the way down. Even when I put the stedi LEDs in mine I wasn't happy, they I decided to adjust them to see what happened and well. Holy smokes. Nothing I pass on the highway puts out light like me now! Love your 105 mate and glad you do too!
Thanks for the video! I loved the editing style and the item descriptions that came on screen.
I'm looking to sell my 2012 CRV in hopes of picking up an old Land Cruiser and this video has given me a lot of ideas on what to look for in potential modifications. Thanks! 👍
Wow . . . . Just wow! Nice job mate 👌 thanks for sharing your experiences and a very well planned fitout. I'm rejigging my setup at the moment so it's been very useful to see your walk-thru 👍 keep up the great vids!
Love the cruiser mate. Just started building a 105 up myself I went for the raslarr front bar due to you video of your bar wor plus many other of your ideas are really helpful for me. Nice build mate!!
Thank you very much....
Have been following you from nearly the beginning.
Your most recent build is very well thought out.
I am nearly finished my build after 18 months and hope to post it soon.
Congratulations and hope many new adventures come from this.
Cheers from NSW...
Thank you very much.... keen to hear about your build when it's done :-)
Awesome vehicle man I have had mine for 7 years and only needed one battery one bush and one puncture. Now for a serious bit of cash to give it a big birthday makeover with a major service new tires and a bloody good clean lol. great video
Awesome showcase of your machine mate. It gives me a few ideas for my 105 Series! I especially like your rear Gull wing windows, very nice!
Thank you very much....
Yes stefan...thats great.....so helpful for a wagon build. Also the video on the slinky suspension was really helpful as well. I really like the rigour you bring to the process which then leaves something of a blueprint to follow..
thanks stefan...can we talk offline?

Wow What an Amazing Rig ... I am down in Puerto Rico and i am the Proud Owner of a 1997 FZJ80, i was recently finally able to upgrade to OME 3 inch suspension and 33's Toyo's AT2's and OMG i am so Happy ... i can only imagine what your Rig Feels and Drives like ... What an Amazing Vehicle you Created ... WOW ... Liked & Subscribed ...
Thank you very much....
Great video and thank you for sharing your experience from Australia to Argentina! If you would like to tour with us through the Andes please let us know. You are most welcome! Best Walter
Brilliant research and set up. Looks like a quality build, and capable.
Your future Canning trip will be a big test and proud ‘brag’ point when you make it through. My experience personally and from assisting others through the CSR and surrounds has taught me.
Failure points...
Long range fuel tanks.
Any electrical work other than standard.
Suspension geometry diverting from standard.
Any weight above what the manufacturers originally accounted for.
Any speeds above what a standard vehicle would achieve.
The one biggest failure commonality is weight. If your factory gvm is XYZZ.... stay under it. A piece of paper ‘saying it can’.....unfortunately CSR can’t read.
Enjoy all your videos and look forward to you proving to yourself just how awesome your ‘super tourer’ is 👍
yep, I agree though I think the double Simpson Crossing this year with 9 days without tracks was a pretty good test, I doubt that anything on the Canning will match that but 9 days is different then 1800ks and it was with a different suspension set up. We will see it will be the ultimate test I guess but to be honest, I'm not too worried .... the Cruiser will have a round of dieting before the trip and I will try to keep my weight well below my 4.2t GVM that is for sure
I kept mine down to 2.8tons with 240l fuel and 60water......last trip, and it was a breeze😉
wow yea not in a 105 Series I will be around 3.8t
Hi,im from borneo.. What i like about the video is its very educational, the way u explain them is so detail, other offroad series i watched on youtube is just pure modification with little explaination on products with their strength and weakness(pros and cons)which will influence future buyers etc, looking forward to your next build👍thumbs up on your 105
Thank you very much....
Hello Stefan, I really enjoyed watching this review. It s so different from some of the self-involved show-offish reviews of some of the other "blokes", very detailed and I like the reasoning of your purchases, so people new to 4x4 learn something at the same time, also the very long detailed list in the comment section. Will come back to you if I ever have money to buy. Also like the German words in your review, like "Saft" for electricity, due to my own German background. Hopefully come back to you in the future when my own time to explore this country comes round. Uli
Vielen Dank Uli
I have a 105 as well. Highly recommend Raslarr for all bar work. They are great. I chose them based off your recommendation in your build video. Happy touring.
Thanks mate glad to hear you are as happy as I am
By far my favourite landcruiser, shame we don't seem many around in the UK, engine mod is a very good idea. Very tasteful and clever modifications. Thank you for your videos👍
Thank you very much....
Doing this conversion now, this makes me so excited
You sir just gave me the best ideal setup for a build im thinking off, thank you so much! Awesome vehicle btw,,
Why do I feel like i just watched the world's longest ad? :) The one thing that would have been really useful to round it all out is a costing for all that work. Amazing vehicle by the end of it all.
lol, can hardly leave the products I use out; watch the updated videos as I show what worked and what got changed over time. I be divorced if I disclose cost
That’s a nice ride. I love how you described the timeline topic. Very organized
Thank you very much....
The spline hubs are what Toyota should be supplying to fix this common problem. Great upgrade.
And it's Patent Pending in Australia and USA.
They won't though, since the 70 series is their only current 4x4 with the fully floating rear axle and they only spend the minimum on developing it now.
Pardon me, but what exactly does it do?
That is an incredible build. Well done and thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much....
Great build! I've been looking forward to this video so i can pinch some ideas for my own. Love your work - keep em coming!
Thank you very much....
Would you build one for me on Landcrusier 1992-1998?
You've built a superb truck there! Must be awesome to drive and good fun!
yes i absolutely love it
What a spectacular cruiser! Thanks for sharing this video. I wish the USA got the 105 series 😕
Absolute awesome rig and setup. This is a fantastic vid👍
Good stuff Stefen! Really interesting to see your setup in detail.
Thank you very much....
Hi Si-Fu Stefan... I'm a former student of yours from your martial arts days.... Just wanted to say g'day quickly and let you know I've been enjoying your channel and its been inspiring me to get into the 4WD world. You've got some good production quality on the videos and lots of information which is good to see - the drone shot at the start was amazing. Previously for many years I was all about sports cars and speed but having done that - actually I still have a motorbike for that - I'm now thinking about how great it would be to properly explore this beautiful country in a vehicle that is capable of doing so off the paved highways.
That is great to hear mate, it’s such a beautiful country it ought to be explored ...
This has become the ultimate 105 warm/mild weather vehicle! I learn a lot from your informative videos. You take good care to mention details that ultimately is very important. Thank you for sharing, and good travels :)
Oh, by the way, the Instagram game is strong with this one ;)
Thank you very much....
I like your no bullshit approach. Thanks for making this video!
Thank you very much....
Best looking hundy i have seen!
So many little smart ideas in this build that make this car so capable. Just got my 105 and in need of some ideas for what to do.great video
Thank you very much....
@@AlloffroadAu the rear cargo setup, the new axle and spline, the engine swap, updated torque converter, the complete barwork. this has to be the most capable touring 105
Awesome build Stefan I also have a hundred series but with the petty V8 looking at doing the similar build as you thanks for the awesome videos
Thank you very much....
Awesome tourer build credits to you and the people that helped you with it
Thanks mate
Perfect touring vehicle, well done.
Thank you very much....
The nicest Landcruiser I have ever seen period.
Thank you very much....
Great video summarizing your experiences with your 105 series. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos!
Awesome, thank you! There are two updates on my channel to this build don't miss them
@@AlloffroadAu Awesome!! I will definitely check them out!
Stefan, that is off the scale cool.
Thank you very much....
great work. Makes me wonder about other who are fan boys of the Defender, how often it actually does break down.
yea you have fan boy's in every camp, every vehicle can fail Landrovers just do it a bit more often from my experience. Most issues I had was shitty electrical stuff, ignition barrel relays, fuel lines in most cases car would get me home even driving 1000k's with a stuffed gearbox just too many headaches for me
@@AlloffroadAu And for me its driveline components and ABS.
Love the video mate! Always touring vehicle mate. Amazing eye for detail and we'll though out!
Thank you very much....
What a beast. Love the driveline and all the other underbody mods. So capable. Always loved the 105 series; if I ever change from the disco 2a it would be to that
Thank you very much...., I loved my D2 a was a good vehicle just a bit to small
@@AlloffroadAu yeh the cabin of the cruiser would be nice and roomy. I have the disco setup very nicely tho really efficient for camping but can take most of it out quickly and looks stock and 'clean' inside. Problem with the D2 is it is harder to fit bigger tyres than 245/75/16s without too many other modifications
Great build, love it, thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much....
Absolutely outstanding video. Very descriptive. Just excellent 👍🏼
Thank you kindly!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I have a year 2000 Landcruiser 100 series. No modifications yet. 🤙🏼
That is awesome! They are great cars mate.
great video. i’ve joined the converted.
just bought myself a grandpa speck 105. replacing the blown gear box. then hoping to do it up maybe half as nice as this rig.
Welcome aboard!
Nice walk through mate, I am still building my 200 series tourer and it would seem we have similar ideas. Cheers Steve
Thanks mate
30 mins of awesomeness 👌
Thank you very much....
What a beast😱❤️
Great build 👍
He really has one of the best overlander in the Aussie!
Thank you very much.... I think so too but I'm admittedly a bit biased
Great build 👍👍
on the money with vehicle choice and why. I have researched all of the options and really wanted a 105 for the same reason. but ended up getting a 70 series because I needed a utility for work purpose. love the videos keep up the good work.
Thank you very much....
Thank you very much....
In-joke , in the opening credits? Anyway, great stuff mate. One of my favourite YT channels.
Lol no only spelling mistake on my end . Thanks for following
Impressive review. Good job.
Thank you
Thanks for the details mate, nice work
Any time!
I totally hear what you’re saying about the 70 series. If you buy one stock you will probably need to throw at least $20k on top of the purchase price to get it somewhere near.
yes probably a bit more..
Great explanation. I fell in love with both the vehicle and the video.
Glad you liked it!
Really impressive build! Certainly the most impressive 105 I have seen. Toyota never sold the 105 in Japan.
I think the 105 was only sold to Australia because of the mining industry
@@AlloffroadAu i think you thinking of the 105R its a 105 but with less chrome and none the fancy trim also the rear cargo doors open sideways not up and down like the 105.
awesome truck Stephan. You make a good choise to chainge, and go for the 105. Here in west Europe the 105 is verry difficult to find. And cost a fortune. (minimum €20 000--) And the builing to a offroader cost also a fortune. Toyota parts cost a 3 a 4 time what here cost land rover parts. So i stay with the Disco 2. Thank you for share this great video. And all the best for 2019.
yes very different in Europe, a Landcruiser in Australia is like a VW golf in Germany they build the country and is pretty much the only 4wd vehicle you get spars for in remote communities
I too picked a 105 for all of the same reasons. I have just learned of the 1HD FTE . It came out in the Japanese 100 series and bolts in easy. I still don't get why they never released them as a combination as standard.
Very nice setup I guess my 80 is also a super tourer crawler.
Thank you very much.... yes your 80 is also a nice build
after seeing your build I contacted the alternato guys, thats a sweet set up I have installed a 150MP alt from a toyota sequoia in mine but yours is serious. love your builds so well thought out. @@AlloffroadAu
Awesome walk thru and setup mate!
I have a Defender and it’s reliable but agree there’s always something cosmetic breaking 🤦🏽♂️
yea for me it unfortunately where no cosmetic issues, gear box ,clutch , ignition barrel relays, fuel relays, fuel pumps, fuel lines and the list goes on...
Oh shoot - that’s not good. Maybe yours was built on a Monday or Friday? Hahaha
lol a friend of mine who also had a TD5 a year younger had the same issue as are many of the people I know who still have Defenders. I think it's more the exception if you don't have issues
Awesome work, just subscribed
Thank you very much
Great mods go big enjoy
I fairly love the video that shares a lot things useful
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it
One tough truck. so much better than the defender. People review their own trucks and leave out the cost of the whole build, not sure why. Would be good to get an overall cost of this build.
Good work!
lol probably because we could not sleep anymore or would be close to divorce if we counted everything which went into it. However, it was a little cheaper then my Defender Tourer.
As a Defender owner with a Lexus engine, I agree
Incredible.
Very nice build Stefan! My feeling is most builders / modifiers go overboard, I prefer to keep my vehicle stock as possible and as light as possible - not to say that you have, but I just feel that most mods don't really provide the degree of increase in performance perceived, and they add more things to go wrong when you're out in the bush. And out here, it can be even worse with the nearest COMPETENT garage a VERY long way away. I also have a 105 (2006) but with the standard 1HZ diesel - bit slow on the hills but otherwise capable in almost all terrains except "playing" in the dunes (which I'm not into anyway). I would probably prefer a 1HDFTE but VERY difficult to find it here (South Africa), and then it costs a lot, too much for me. Enjoy your vehicle and enjoy the adventures!!
I hear what you saying but would disagree, I have not added many mods which add complexity and in my experience, the additional capabilities and increased strength make it more reliable and provide an additional buffer. I think Afrika is also different terrain wise and is not as isolated? I don't think any modification ever cut a trip short in my Defender it always was a Landrover stock part like fuel pump, gearbox. Weight is an issue but if you spend four weeks in the desert without resupply you can’t get around it. Carrying this loads over very rough terrain with stock parts is waiting for stuff to fail.
Sure, you are correct and I would agree. The only real mod I have is the raised and stronger suspension...as well as stainless steel water tanks under each side of the 105...brilliant. Plus a two-drawer system. What did I leave out?? Oh yes, the snorkel! Haha. I also used to drive a Defender, and they have their place in certain applications for sure, great vehicles. Anyway, I believe in lighter-the-better in general, and in retrospect (with respect to my comment) I think its more perhaps what kit people take with and not necessarily the after-market modifications they make to the vehicle, which are mostly necessary depending on where you are headed or what terrain they will need to negotiate. I'm a guide out here and travel widely...in my opinion the amount of "mod-cons" people attach to their vehicles or PACK to take with in order to make their lives "easier and more comfortable" is absolutely astounding! I opine that they are mostly missing the point of separating themselves from their 'comfort zone' at home and heading out into some sort of wilderness...I notice people, a lot, spending an inordinate amount of time "fiddling and faffing" with all their kit they have brought with them and missing out on precisely what they should be engaging with, a connection to the world around them. They seem to exist in a cocoon of mod-cons which they've brought with them in the erroneous belief that they are necessary, even critical! In contrast, the 'awakening' and 'connection' they experience when actively encouraged to exist a little more "primitively," is a wonderful sight, and well-worth it! Granted, some folks would just like the (in my opinion, insulated) experience of their vehicle, it's movement, capability and their interaction with mates - it's enough for them. But I cannot recommend highly enough that the less kit you take with the more you will (probably) connect with wilderness, inside and out.
yes, 100% agree and I do carry very little mod cons, no showers or hot water systems for instance and to be honest, I'm learning to go simpler with each trip and would agree that you connect more and also will become more resourceful by having to make do...
Hey Stefan, thanks for posting this vid!! I’m looking to do the same and found the vid very informative.
Glad it was helpful mate !
Great build!
Glad you think so!
Gruesse Stef
ja gibt einige 1HDFTE hier in OZ, 80er is auch cool
Marvellous thing!!! Thanks for sharing it
Thank you! Cheers!
May i ask how can i buy this 105 series?
This is an incredible video and ai like it.
Thank you very much....
Awesome rig mate 👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
Muchas Gracias por el vídeo. Muy bien explicado.
Nice one mate. 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
wow and i thought your defender was a nice rig.. not sure why this video has dislikes.. this is an amazingly setup tourer. one of the best ive seen without a doubt. the people who built this for you are absolute masters in their trade. i dread to think how much this build has cost but wow, very nice.
Yes a variety of people involved in the build as it’s super difficult to find good people who have pride in their work and satisfy my standards
i like how you turn my post praising the people who actually built this tourer and make it about you and your standards. ego much?
@@4x4junkie86 wow interesting how you interpret my comment. The people I worked with are in most cases the best in the industry however it has not been an easy ride to find them and that's my comment) But yes I do have a ego and I'm proud of my research, trials and tribulations and the final outcome of the machine which could only happen together with the masters in their trade.
@@AlloffroadAu fair enough, i agree it's hard to find good mechanics which is why i've always worked on my cars myself, at least that way i know it's been done properly, but i've never built anything this nice. you deserve credit for researching and being financial enough to be able to own such a nice tourer, but as for the build and the standard of it, credit where credit is due, to the people who built it and met your needs. (from a perspective of someone who does his own work, ie - engine swaps/rebuilds, major overhauls, panel/paint and general maintenance) i admire the work done on this vehicle.
top build mate.
Thank you very much....
Awesome build and great video. I have an 80 Series factory 1HD-T that I am in the process of building, similar style too, (emu wings etc)
I was wondering what was involved in your GVM upgrade and who the engineer was? Thanks
Good job mate
Plenty of experience enabling you to build your tourer so quickly. Plenty of shakedown trips this year for you too. Age old struggle of weight and ergonomics may keep you thinking in 2019
Cruiser will go trough a slim down in 2019 want to shed at least another 100kg
Should be an interesting challenge for you. I assume you’re still happy with your bunker and 270° awning camp setup, whilst not strictly vehicle related, camping habit generally builds the vehicle in my opinion. We’ve noticed, but yet to confirm, for example, the fuel usage between the swag and the Oztent. Could shave weight moving to crop sensor 😉
lol crop won't happen, but otherwise, Cruiser can still lose a little. Yes, for solo touring bunker and Foxwing is perfect for me.
Thanks for sharing your mods with us Stephan. I will be going to Raslarr, to have a new Bull bar fitted, to the 105 ser, because of your review. I will be sure to mention where I saw it. I also like your battery set up and will consider carrying out the same mod in future. Have you experienced any problems with overheating using those compartments? I understand you have a fan but other than that how is the location so far? Currently my aux battery is under the bonnet and it seems to be fine but Id be interested to to know the pros/cons. Cheers!
Rasslar are great, the battery set up is outdated latest set up with dual 100 Ah DCS LiFePo4 under the bonnet is coming in V2 video in next few month. I changed from Crystal Lead over a year ago here is why ruclips.net/video/Ea91vaNttq8/видео.html
This truly is a dream vehicle...
thanks Clive
Fantastic video, I’ve been waiting for a full run down. I’ve got a 105 and use total care as well. Where is that black cargo net above the rear seats from? I’m looking for exactly that!
thank you, the cargo net is a carry-over from my Defender I think I bought it from Mud UK
I absolutely love your videos..
Thank you very much....
Kudos to you for sharing details of your 105. Obviously well thought out changes. I shall adopt few of those changes to my overland vehicle.
Why do you put so much emphasis on long suspension travel if your set up is for camping and not rock crawling?
What were some of the limits you ran into with the regular bilstein shocks you had to justify a lot more expensive shocks set up?
Would like to see a highlight vid on the engine swap. Thank you!
I do a fair bit of remote Desert Travel and in trackless condition going up and down dunes long suspension travel equals traction. Our Desert dunes they are rarely even like in the Sahara but often have deep depressions and holes created by the wind so often not conquered by pure speed. Suspension set up made a huge difference, the speed I can travel, the comfort, handling, not bottoming out and the added traction in certain situations due to additional travel.
Could you fit a small wind deflector at the front of the rack to help stop wind resonance ? Even a small angled strip to redirect the wind between the roof and the bottom of the rack to alter it's direction so there is no resonance. Bit like steel industrial stacks have the spiral at the top to stop resonance. You have a great tourer.
I think Rhino has a$180 deflector now may give that a go
I’m fairly sure the planks on the Rhino platform are hollow with an opening underneath running the full length. Wondering if that is where a lot of the wind noise is coming from ? If you could cover/plug the openings might help
Really good video!
Thank you very much....
reely cool vid Stefan.. 5 star content as always! I live in canada now.. we dont have the landcruisers and the patrols.. 4x4 choices suck here.. The best i can get is a 80 series. You guys are lucky in australia.
Yes I feel you but at least you guys can modify as your heart contend. The rules in Australia are very very restrictive.
His lancruiser has the same chassis as an 80, the 80 series is the overall superior 4x4
@@bigb3281 that explains why i am scrambling to get the best 80 i can find in the states.. thanks man!
@@AlloffroadAu Stefan, and we have less restrictive import rules in canada.. 15 year rule :) problem is you guys and the japanese have RHD and they r a nightmare to insure. Awesome build Stefan - can you share the path you took your wiring first the roof top solar on the 105? Thanks
Next to windscreen along the plastic rail
Thanks Stefan - I'm also doing a 1hdfte conversion to my Fzj105. One as wondering if you kept standard 4.3 diff ratios and also if you retained function of factory cruise control. Are you returning economy in order of 12L/100km? Thankyou
