      Try Blackhole as a Soundflower alternative existential.audio/blackhole/
      Other apps you could try on a mac include:
      Loopback: rogueamoeba.com/loopback/
      Audio HiJack: rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/
      SoundSource: rogueamoeba.com/soundsource/

      J.A. Mena are you using a Ethernet connection to your internet? That will help the most with the quality, but the latency will never be good enough to play together in time with your student.
      I’ve been modifying my teaching techniques away from playing together and doing more call and response. I’m also looking for the types of lessons that fit best, so spending time on the psychology of drumming and “how to think” about things.

    Just 2 things to note:
    1) Soundflower doesn't seem to work on OS X Catalina. BlackHole works as an alternative.
    2) In Ladiocast you can just use one input (the interface), and select both channels directly as L and R. No need to have a second duplicate input.

    Thank you, this was extremely helpful. I'm a guitar teacher from Belgium, trying to keep lessons going during the lockdown. Couldn't figure out why Skype is only seeing the first input of my interface. I used a mixer to combine sources for a few days, but this made the process so much simpler. I'll pass on the word to all my fellow teachers ! How could you know, over one year ago, when you posted this video, that it was gonna help a lot of people to keep their job during this strange time. That is kind of beautiful.
    On the video side, I tried to improve my video quality by using a DSLR (T5i) instead of the macbook's webcam. I had to use two softwares, Camera Live and CamTwist, to be able to use it with Skype. Unfortunately the video quality is really low and unusable. Strangely it's great when I use the EOS Utility software from Canon, but as soon as I use it with Skype, the quality drops. I have a good internet connection (wired with an ethernet cable). I gave up, thinking my camera is probably too old to do the job, but maybe you know something about this issue? I'm gonna browse your channel to see if you already covered this subject !
    Thank you again for sharing this tip, you are my hero today. Hope everything is good for you, stay safe !

      Hi, Bruno, glad you found this video and yes seeing it surge in views due to COVID has been both a surprise and pleasure...not exactly what I was planning for lol! Really happy that it helps in any little way and glad to hear you're staying inside. I'm on lockdown here too, one week in.
      As for the video, it could just be Skype. I do have some vids on here which you may have found about using your Canon DSLR as a webcam and with some of the stuff you found. One suggestion would be to try something other than Skype. Look at StreamYard.com, they have a free plan and I'm really enjoying it.

      @@RayOrtega Hey Ray, thank you for the reply. I found the solution for the video ! I had to set the video resolution and the frame rate manually in CamTwist's preference menu, that's it ! This made me think: tutorial videos on the internet are like the GPS in your car, easy steps but you might forget to think outside of those steps and follow them blindly.
      Keep up the good work and stay safe !

    I would also suggest that you could use a mixer in front of your audio interface. That way regardless of how many inputs you require your Audio Interface would get the final mix as one signal.

    We've got the Saffire Pro 40, and after trying this and another option, involving a cheap 4-channel mixer we also have, we ended up just sending the Saffire's headphone out to the mic input jack on the PC (haven't tried the blue line input jack, but that's next). Done. There's maybe 3/4 of a second delay/lag, but definitely something we can live with, and it sounds way better than just the mic on the webcam. We're running 5 drum mics, 1 overhead condenser, and another one for the drummer's voice through the Saffire and the Skype user on the other end can hear it all and the levels are mixed and controlled by the interface. Also, we disabled Skype's automatic handling of the audio and set the level ourselves to about 7.

    • @RayOrtega

    In my case with Sound Devices Mix-Pre 6 (or 3) there’s a way to combine selected channels into one on the device itself and send it via USB to Skype and receive caller’s voice from Skype via USB input back to Mix-Pre as a separate channel. Basically, it does mix-minus out of the box. Super convenient and “free” or at least less complicated and more reliable.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  5 лет назад

      Yes I love the MixPre series and I will have one soon but I haven't seen where multiple inputs will be recognized by Skype. What is the setting for that? I know all the rest, how the USB goes to it's own channel and this is why you don't get loopback to Skype because Skype doesn't hear the channel 3 USB. I'll know more once I can test this for myself.

    • @pepelsbey
      @pepelsbey 5 лет назад +1

      Ray Ortega I use it as 2 ins / 2 outs device for my Mac, not in multichannel mode. Once Mix-Pre is in advanced mode, I go to Settings > Outputs > St. Out Left/Right and send only inputs 1, 2, 3 to the left and right channels. Both channels are accessible from Skype. Input 4 is set up as USB 1 (you just press the knob and change input source) and I have Mix-Pre as an input and output device for OS sound. Now I can send 3 mics to Skype, receive and record Skype on channel 4 and send Skype + inputs 1, 2, 3 to headphone output where I have splitter.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  5 лет назад

      @@pepelsbey Skype only picks up left side but since you are sending them left, that makes sense. And yes I've seen that ability but you lose multichannel at that point or will it still record discrete tracks to SD card? Cause it's cool that it does that but losing multichannel is not worth it IMO if you want to do post production. With the MixPre you can also select what channels go out of the analog output so one way to retain multichannel is to send all channels besides Skype and connect that to the computer so that you get the best of both worlds. Of course all of this is dependent on your workflow and if a mix works for you then recoding that is fine. This video however is about multichannel and retaining that functionality because in a lot of cases that is why people bought a multichannel device. Still love the MixPre and in fact it's the device that I put most podcasters who have a budget on but of course most can't afford it when they are starting out and they have a hard time seeing the value unfortunately.

    • @pepelsbey
      @pepelsbey 5 лет назад

      Ray Ortega yes, I’m sending 2 channels to Mac and recording multitracks on SD card at the same time. I believe it’s a pretty rare feature for audio interfaces like this. I used to have Zoom H5 and I was really disappointed with lack of this feature. I’m really happy with workflow where my Mac is just a source of an audio and input a mix for caller’s convenience. All recording is happening on the device itself, including Skype’s track. It feels much more reliable. Also I double checked my settings and I’m sending channels 1, 2, 3 only to L in both St. Out L/R options for some reason. I don’t remember why but it seems I got it right :)

      My pleasure. My advice would be to simplify the process. Don't over think it, try to do the simplest production possible and then grow from there. I saw your comment on another video where the person showed their setup with a mixer and H6 and there were several things wrong with their advice. For starters, for what he was showing, you don't even need the mixer when you have an H6. So many people will waste money on setup on following that advice.

    Hey Ray, that looks great, I will try, thanks!! I am still not sure if the guys you speak to will be able to hear you in stereo? I will do some drum classes on skype and would like to send stereo audio from my sound card. So I am trying to make my sound card as a "sound in" option in Skype. I installed "soundflower" which comes up in the mac prefs, so Skype can detect "sound in" from itunes, but it seems more complicated to have the sound cards pop up as "sound in" in Skype.. and it might still be in mono? Would be so nice if it was possible to use a good pro tools mix through my universal audio sound cards into skype..

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  4 года назад +1

      I think everything you do will be mono because Skype is mono and thus the reason for this issue. The two channel interface which uses essentially a stereo connection to give you the two mono channels will only be seen by Skype on the left channel (1). So I don't think there is a way to do stereo. But I've also seen drums mic'd mono so perhaps just a compromise?;)
      Take a look at another service for connection like StreamYard.com and that might work.

      Glad this worked. It's going to get trickier to try to bring in audio from the same computer. You might need an additional app like Loopback that I listed in the description or what you could try is bringing the output of your computer into the audio interface cause you need some way to get the audio from RUclips into the interface either through an app where you route the browser audio to Soundflower or by physically plugging the computer output which can only be RUclips or else you'll get other sounds, into the audio interface itself and then sending that channel to Skype via something like the setup here with Ladiocast. You can also use an external device like a phone or other computer to input into the audio interface and just play youtube or any other music through that dedicated device.

      That's going to be trickier. If you have an additional input a computer but it will probably need to be a separate computer or tablet/phone. If you don't have any more inputs then you'll need to use some software to send system audio to a channel like I do with LadioCast in this video so that it can be included into your Soundflower channel that Skype is getting.

      Thanks. Not a mix-minus per se however nothing that comes in via USB also goes back out USB so the Skype caller will not hear themselves but you couldn't then also open up software and record the whole thing on independent tracks because the Skype caller is not coming in to it's own track. You could however record the whole thing by hooking up an audio recorder to the headphone output but again you'd have a mixed signal.

      Does your Input 1 have HiZ for your guitar? It needs instrumental level power, turn it on if so unless you are already coming into the interface amplified. Also try seeing if your mic works in input 1 to help understand where the breakdown is happening

    Ray, I never question you on this stuff so I know what you say works. My question to you is why not just do a mix-minus type of thing within the DAW. In other words, I don't want to install more software to interface with my IO, which I know this does and I know it works, when I can just use the DAW and do a send from all of my inputs to an AUX bus that gets sent to the computer where I can use it as a Skype and put her anything. Of course with hardware and cables like a field recorder or an actual mixer, as you showed us how to do that and others have, we're doing the same thing with the DAW. I'm not crazy about other layers of interface, even though I know this works. I say all this only to ask, not to tell, because I know you know the answer. Is there any shortcoming of just using my DAW and doing my own mix minus with it so that I don't add another software layer?

    In my case I'm using a Focusrite Clarett 8Pre Thunderbolt. The output of my recorded tracks in my DAW is going into Thunderbolt 1/2, but Ladiocast does not see that. How can I route that signal in as well?

      @RayOrtega  5 лет назад

      First if you are recoding Skype in your DAW make sure you are not monitoring the audio from the DAW or you will send the Skype audio back as well creating a loop. The output of the DAW can't go into the interface and then have that also work as an input to Skype. I think you'd need to try and use Soundflower to route the output of the DAW to LadioCast. You'll need to expirment since this gets all jumbled in my head lol. You could also route the output of your computer back into the Clarrett and then use that channel as the input for Ladiocast. Let me know how it works out.
