A sincere THANK YOU! Amazing video with clear instructions, which makes everything looks very easy!
Much love to you brother!
I’m so happy. Glad you liked it. 👍🏻
@@JohnPaulMusicUK I went to your channel and heard one of your songs. You have amazing voice! Such a surprise .... I think it was called " You and me". I thought you are a great techno person but in fact you are a great artist too ... Much Love brother! :)
Thank you so much. 👍🏻
You & Me was from the series we did last year of recording from scratch only using an iPad.

Left a long comment on JohnPaul Music's other video that I found so incredibly helpful -- "OBS Tutorial - How I setup & use OBS" but wanted to say "Thank you!" here as well. Bought you several coffees. I was a desperate singer-songwriter with bad sound but now, thanks to you, I am all ready to go for my first Facebook Live concert on Wednesday night with great audio!! :) You have done the world of quarantined musicians a great service.
That is so lovely to say. Thank you so much and I’m just genuinely happy that these two videos are helping people. 👍🏻
John,
I've spent almost a week trying to sort this out, thank you ever so much!
Steve,
Your more than welcome 👍🏻
Really helpful video JP, I’ve been live streaming for the last 7 weeks, each one has improvements over the last one... you have helped me take another step up! Your instructions are extremely clear and vey easy to follow - thank you !
So glad I was able to help. 👍🏻
Yo JP, thank you so much! I spent all day yesterday researching this set up and i happened to stumble on your video today. You explained it so easy for musicians like myself! Big up to you and i will use your distrokid link.
Hey Cess! 👋
Aww glad its helped. Yeah this is exactly why I did it.. for musicians.
Any questions then ask me. 👍🏻
This is exactly the type of tutorial I've been searching for. Love that you brought in OBS into the mix too!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Check out my OBS tutorial I just made last week. 👍🏻
I think this was probably the most helpful video I've ever seen on RUclips. Great video man and thanks for the efforts, we appreciate it.
You are more than welcome 🙏

What an incredible video. Super clear, no wasted words, completely helpful. Glad I discovered your channel JP!
Wow! What such kind words. I’m so happy you have found it useful.
Please pass it on to musicians and performing friends. We are all in this together. 👍🏻
Why would you ever dislike this video... ?Maybe some people who don’t like more “competition” online? This it really some good crucial information! Thanks @johnpaul !!
Thank you for the kind comment.
You cant please everyone. 👍🏻
WTF I refuse to look. Someone actually DISLIKED THIS?!?
Chasjazzez thanks to th einternet we are discover that the world is also populatedby numb skulls; it’s actually useful to know this once you get over the surprise - revulsion element...
It’s simply information. Take it, use it, don’t use it.
If it’s useful then great.. if not or you wanna go another way.. that’s fair enough.
Totally open and did this video to help others but i appreciate this isn’t the ONLY way to do this.. it’s just the way I do it and i have had excellent results from it streaming to Facebook all last year and restreaming to multiple platforms.
Like i said.. cant please them all. 👍🏻
That has to be what it is.
Great vid, John! Thanks! One thing you didn't mention that is an obvious huge advantage of using OBS as a musician is the option of applying filters to your audio sources. It's like having a whole DAW with basic plugins at your disposal. It's just nice to be able to do it inside the program if you need. I use filters to get compression, EQ, reverb and limiter, and it's all there inside OBS. I can't believe this software is free, it's so good.
Hey 👋
Yeah that’s very true and I have let people know in comments when asked. It’s a brilliant piece of kit.
Long life OBS. hehe.
where do you find all the filters?
I'm SO glad I came across this video. OBS has been sitting in my dock for some time and I had NO idea it could do all this! THANK YOU!!!
You are more than welcome. 👍🏻
Fantastic video! You've prob explained what 90% of musicians out there have been wanting to know for the lockdown, very helpful, well done
Hey Wayne 👋
That’s awesome to hear.. that’s what I wanted to achieve to help people get up and running.
I’m totally stocked how far and wide his video has reached musicians all over the globe.
Thank you 🙏🏻
This ia simply the best vídeo, that I've seen about this subject.

JohnPaul Music UK
Hi thanks for the really well explained video 🙂👍
I have two questions if that’s ok:
1. Can this multi streaming platform link from OBS
2. Can you process the live audio in using OBS or something else (compression, eq, reverb) live?
Hope that’s ok 🙂
Thanks again
Paul
Hey Paul 👋
The short answer is yes and yes! Hehe
With ReStream there is an option for it in obs settings under stream.
And for effects, click on the audio options (gear icon) or right click on the source and pick Filters. There tou can add a ‘filter’ which includes eq and compression but also VST plugins. 👍🏻
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Perfect thank you 😊
You’re welcome 👍🏻
This is THE best OBS tutorial -- I keep coming back to it. Question: I've set up my iPhone as a secondary camera, per your instructions, and it works fine except for one thing: The iPhone camera image that shows up on my laptop includes the button at the bottom of the phone and all the words-- "lapse" "Slo-Mo," etc.--that are below the camera image on the phone itself. How can I get rid of all that and get an image that's exclusively what the phone camera is viewing? Thanks for humoring me.
Hey Bill 👋
Thank you so much for the comment! Wow!
Regarding the camera - have a look at this video. Broadcast quality video, wirelessly from the iphone to OBS - Unfortunately as of June its no longer free.. but its great!
ruclips.net/video/1OyfzQ-sHRs/видео.html
Another option is have a look at an app simply called “Shoot - Clean Camera” - about £4 and will give you a clear image when plugged in.
Hope these help. 👍🏻
Love your Clarity, JP. You made it understandable for a novice tech guy here in North Central Washington State, USA. LOVE the accent by the way.
Glad it was understandable. Thats always good. And the accent.. well, I was born with it. Haha.
Thanks so much JP. Your video is really clear and helpful. Irish Doctors Choir are just setting up our first streamed event and the learning curve is steep, but your video is superb to get things started. You also show how it can be done with limited kit
You are more than welcome 🙏
This was marvellous. I especially appreciated that you basically got on with it and didn't waste time waffling about irrelevant stuff before the main attraction even started! I have a question, if I may; my upload speed is terrible - max 0.5 Mbps. sometimes 0.4. As I understand it this is too slow for livestreaming. But would it help if I was able to have the video only in black and white? And if so, how can I get that? I have an iphone 6+ (and an interface and mics etc). I've got as far as installing OBS, actually the StreamLabs version. If this were to work out, I've been asked by one of my places of work to livestream to Facebook a charity gig, various tuition colleagues have been doing these and some useful ££ raised. Unfortunately, the tradition now is they happen at 7pm...
Hey 👋
so first off, the black and white idea doesn’t matter when it comes to digital streaming cause it’s still sending a certain resolution, not matter the colour. But if you want a black and white look, go to your camera on OBS and right click and add a filter.
However I can let you into a little secret.. I am the same. My broadband currently Max’s out at 0.7 upload.. so I actually use my phone as a personal hotspot for my Mac!?! I know.. mental. I luckily have unlimited 4g on my iPhone so I’m using that to stream.
Streamlabs is an awesome package, especially on mobile and well worth investing the time to understand it.
I have JUST made a new OBS video today. Check it out.

Hope it helps 👍🏻
Hi John!
Firstly thank you for such an awesome video, much needed during these wild times, like you said, especially as musicians a better quality gig is much better!
I have a question, as i'm not that tech-savvy, but i was wondering, I normally do streams on my Instagram, and I have seen a couple people use irig or irig stream, however, this apple camera connector kit looks interesting too!
Just trying to paint a picture of the set up in my mind. I would love to run it by you!
I want to be able to plug in my dynamic, or condenser mic ( either my SHURE SM58 OR ZOOM H4N handy recorder) whilst also playing my backing tracks during the stream ( with an occasional guitar or piano playing) but my main concern, for now, is a good mix on the mic and clear BT's playing.
Is there a way i can use my audio interphase ( m audio m-track 2x2 c series) to do all this, and run it through my LOGIC PRO X so that I can basically run backing tracks and also have a vocal channel allowing me to add some FX to the vocals during the stream?
I hope i am making sense right now, but is there a way to run it through the laptop directly into the phone to get a good sound with the mic and backing tracks? For this would you recommend the irig set up, or the camera connecting cable kit that you have used?
Thanks again!
Warmest
Selin
Hi Selin 👋
So.. theres a few options here but I will tell you my ideas and see what you think.
Basically you have a few options but the first that springs to mind is investing in a small mixer to plug everything you want in and more importantly have control of the volumes quickly.
Then plug the output of that mixer into your m-track.
You can then use the mrrack with the apple usb camera adapter and into the phone.
HOWEVER - since you are using an apple mac for backing tracks, then have a look at getting into OBS - you can send the backing tracks to OBS with a little plugin called Blackhole Audio for mac.
Then you can use the phone wired or wirelessly as a camera into obs with the sound going through there too.
Again, you would have volume control but it would be all digital.
Hope this makes sense. Let me know what your thoughts are and lets talk more. 👍🏻
One of the most helpful videos I have watched. Thank you, Greg
You are more than welcome. 👍🏻
I cannot begin to thank you enough for this vid! I have watched so many confusing versions and wasted so much time and money on useless tech tools and you showed me the answer to every question I’ve had in one simple video. THANK YOU!!
So glad you like it and happy to help.
If you want to support the channel you can do so here : www.buymeacoffee.com/Johnpaulmusicuk
I copied this setup but instead of running it into a focusrite ( i dont have one and they are selling fast on ebay and amazon) I run it into my Mackie 12 channel mixer which is what I had already at home and i just needed to get adaptor cables. The USB mixer plugs in straight away into my desktop and the OBS software. So it is exactly as in a live gig.
Thats the idea I had - to not change your tech too much and have it set up as you would for a live gig and the interface (or mixer) goes out to your audience.
Glad its worked. Ace. 👍🏻
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Cheers mate !
@@JohnPaulMusicUK your video is one of maybe two or three on here that actually break it all down step by step
Glad its all helping Troy 👍🏻
Can you please give step by step instructions on how to get the output from the mixer for a live music gig . Also, what adaptor you are talking about please ..
Hos is the iPhone connected to the computer(so obs can see and use it)? USB cable or via WiFi? Great tutorial! Cheers from Sweden

Re: your two camera setup - is there a way to use a bluetooth pedal to switch cameras in OBS if you're playing live alone?
You could yes with hot keys or have a look at an automatic scene switcher like this very handy one - obsproject.com/forum/resources/advanced-scene-switcher.395/
Thanks John. Very helpful and informative videos.

Super helpful! Thank you for taking the time to create such a clear and detailed tutorial!
You are more than welcome. Glad you enjoyed it and glad it was clear. 👍🏻
Thank you so much for this idea. As it turns out, I have a Peavey PV6 that is a USB mixer, but unfortunately it has no onboard effects. I needed just a barely audible tinge of it to keep the vocals from sounding too dry. Your video made me remember that I have a Fishman Performer, which I've used live extensively. Just plugged into my interface, and the sound is 1000 times better than with the USB mixer, and it still allows me to dial easily as if I were live. Thank you! Sometimes it's better to use what one already has. The mixer was sponsored by a local music shop, but now I realize I never even needed it in the first place!
That’s amazing! Yeah this whole video is to use what you have and I’m glad you have more control for the stream. 👍🏻
Thanku so much for this JP .... really appreciate the time and effort put into this!
No worries Garth. Just glad that helps.

Hi JP just wanted to say thx for taking the time to explain how to use this streaming tech way of life. At 72 and a retired sound tech I get many questions in Eastbourne East Sussex from local acts but none as much as now as we all stay in lockdown about their live stream being unbalanced on their live stream using just the internal mic on their ipad/iphone so it seems to be the mics used by apple are not as good as the android ones. or maybe apple have a built in gain clipping device as it appears to allow louder mic vocals and lower the backing tracks for those setting up as if live to stream a show. where by others using android devices are more balanced I have heard. Of course obtaining any cables or hardware now is not easy but as least after your brilliant video I can share it and help them all have answers so thx again
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I actually went to Brighton University back in the day for my degree and know Eastbourne.
yeah it’s not easy getting cables and connectors but online stores are a good place to go or try GAK in Brighton as they have an online store. 👍🏻
Such a great video! Concise, informative, well spoken and I also noticed you reply to almost all the comments. Very cool!

Thank you very much! Yeah I try to reply to as many as I can.. easier whilst in lockdown but might get harder once I return to my normal job! Hehe.

This is great! I’ve only started with figuring out OBS. This has inspired me to work with it more. I have to put the sound through a channel mixer set up, because I use Ableton for looping. Hopefully I can figure that out!👍

These are good ideas for people who have not done this before. One issue that some people should be made aware of and then you might notice in this video is if you are using the Apple camera connected in the way that you described and is the default way, you will notice that channel one goes to the left and channel 2 goes to the right so if you watch this video you’ll hear that his vocal is pound hard left and the guitars. Heart rate. Ideally you would want those as duel mono and mixed in the center. A good way to fix this problem is to insert a small audio mixer and mix channel 1 and channel 2 in dual mono and send the master output into the airport audio interface. Or if you have an older phone or tablet like an iPhone 6 like I still use, you can use the JK Audio iRig type of device to be able to adjust your audio input into your phone and it will also capture into your phone in a summed mono audio signal that will fix the isolated left and right channel to blend it into a dual mono centered audio experience. Just some extra thoughts.
Hey ZadTrax 👋
This is a brilliant comment and yes it can go hard left and hard right.
I have make another video about how I use my setup and indeed it is dual mono mixed ruclips.net/video/tErt9uASsPs/видео.html
You have really good advice and some nice tips there. 👍🏻
Thank You so much JP.... I've spent the last few weeks looking at RUclips Tutorials from gardening to baking and of course music. This was the most enjoyable and informative video I have seen. What led me to you was that I was looking for a solution to FB Live not seeing my MacBook Pro camera. The error message I am getting is "The browser you're using doesn't support the camera feature in Live Producer. Update your browser and download the latest beta version of Chrome here or use Firefox to go live. As a reminder, Live Producer is not fully supported in Safari, Internet Explorer, or older versions of Edge."
I have downloaded the update but I still cant get FB Live to access my Camera. I had downloaded OBS but I did nt really understand it but I will have another go at it now. I have subscribed to your channel and I look forward to many more broadcasts. maybe you might even share your music with us. Many Thanks Shay.
Hello Shay. 👋

Thank you for this. First video I’ve found that is plain and simple instruction. Understanding this part of musician set up is where I lack. I just plug into my amp and go. Nice overview. I was just experimenting with OBS audio output bitrates so glad you mentioned that.
Yeah the bitrates all depends on what your broadband can handle. 👍🏻
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Took me a while to figure out that you want to go all the way through the Auto-Configuration Wizard to your target streaming platform, because it takes into account both your computer and your internet connection, and sets everything appropriately.

I really enjoy your videos. How come you don’t have more subscribers? You should have at least 5 times more than that. Keep your videos coming. I’m in Canada.
Thank you so very much! That’s very kind and maybe one day I will! My goal is to have more so I can do this full time. Share it out with people who you think it will help. 👍🏻 😊 🙏

Great video JP. I will say that you mention an advantage of Filmic Pro is that you can change the exposure and lock focus. You can do that with the native iPhone app as well. You have to touch and hold and it will lock focus wherever you are touching. To adjust the exposure, you touch and hold and then slide your finger up or down and a slider will appear beside the box and exposure will go up or down as long as your are still press-holding.
Hey 👋
Yeah that is very true and yeah i know about the exposure and also locking the AE/AF 👍🏻
But the downside is that I am mirroring the whole screen on to OBS so you’ll still see the user interface and all the on screen buttons.
I use Filmic Pro to film all my footage for the RUclips channel and it’s just an added advantage.
A cheaper option is an app called ‘shoot’ which can also get rid of the on screen interface.. it’s around £2.99 - apps.apple.com/gb/app/shoot-clean-camera-feed/id964565026
JohnPaul Music UK Yep the interface staying on the screen doesn’t help if you are looking for a clean feed for OBS, but it’s a tip if you are just wanting to record a video. After watching your video I did some searching and found the LiveAir Solo app. It’s free and gives a clean feed for OBS. I tested it last night and it works great. I have my phone tethered to my iMac with the lightning cable and OBS recognizes the phone as a source in Video Capture Devices. Thanks again for your hard work.
Thats a great shout about Live Air Solo app. Didn’t know that one.
Thats the great thing about a community,we all learn from each other. 👍🏻
Thank you so very much for this, the great thing is I already have all the odds and ends of tech lying around anyway!!
Brilliant. Yeah last thing you want to do is go out and buy a load more stuff when a lot of people already have it.
Excellent. 👍🏻 let me know how you get on.
Awesome John thanks for the video and sharing!
Thanks.
Did another video all about re-streaming.

@@JohnPaulMusicUK Just wondering how I can connect my iPhone to my PC in order to use it as webcam? Will you know by any chance?
Have a look at an app on the App Store called EpocCam. Haven’t used it but pretty much what you are asking for.
Brilliant! Thanks so much. Subbed.

Hey Mr Williams 👋
so where is there no audio output? Can you hear okay through the speaker?
where are you streaming to on the ipad?
Is your camera connection kit the new USB3 one where it can supply power to the ipad and the interface or the old on with JUST usb on it.
the newer one is what is needed as the interface needs power through the cable to run it
Okay cool. (Just ticking boxes there to make sure we have the right stuff)
So next question.. is the Audiobox USB96 compatible to use with an iPad?
Can you normally use it with something like GarageBand on the iPad to record audio into?
Okay so do you have drivers needed for the Audiobox for your Mac? Does the box need a firmware update?
Which iPad is it? What iOS is it on?
Hey John - ive been streaming a lot recently but last couple of streams the audio on my FB Live using iphone 8 has been awful. I dont currently use any additional mic just playing guitar and singing through a small PA set up and recording with the iphone mic. its not the phone as the audio is fine when recording video normally. To use my focusrite and connect directly into the iphone like you do in this video do i need the apple connection kit or can i save some money and get an amazon version for less than half price? cheers for your help
Very informative video ! I quite enjoyed your tips with OBS
Glad it was helpful!
Really useful, thanks JP!
