Anne, thanks so much for taking the time to clearly walk us through this process. I don't teach many lessons online, but the most recent ones have been very difficult to teach because of these audio issues. One time I couldn't hear the student's piano and most times they can barely make out what I'm saying or demonstrating on my piano.
I came across your video for the zoom quality, and realized you are the famous Anne that all of my student's are obsessed with because of your contributions to the RCM celebration series, particularly Angelfish!
Thank you! I am playing acoustic guitar for a work party, and we tested it Friday, before I had seen this video. My sound did not work, just as you demonstrated here. I think I had not enabled my original sound, even though I said "use original sound".
Thank you so much for this very very clear video! I have been teaching singing and piano lessons online for five years. My struggle has been explaining to the students what they need to do on their end to produce a sound, and to listen to me teaching! I am going to send this to every single one of my students so they have the means to adjust their settings and we don’t have to deal with the choppiness or the cutting out of sound during the music! Thank you so much! Cynthia Speckart , St. Louis, Speckart Music Studio
At my location, I lost almost all of the harp until you changed the settings. Then I could hear the harp fine. Who knew? Great information. Thanks, Anne.
A bit shocking isn't it? 2023 has been challenging for audio completely cutting out. I'm noticing such an improvement as my students are getting this sorted out for their harp lessons.
Anne, once again, this is amazing!!! Thank you again for sharing and a BIG thank you for putting together the 7 Irish tunes - I have a gig to play this Friday night for St. Patrick's Day. Thank you for all you do in the harp world!

Wow! Anne, I heard from my daughter that this happens on zoom. She takes cello lessons with her teacher on zoom. Thanks so much for as always taking the time to help others.
Do you use Zoom for your online music lessons? Perhaps you are using a simple setup like an iPad or iPhone? If so, you might not realize that the default audio settings in 2023 can result in choppy or inaudible sound. I'll show you how to change your settings so you can have better audio quality. This is the best tutorial video I've ever seen for teaching students how to change the default settings on their mobile devices. Most of my students know how to do it, but some of them are not good at remembering. And when I meet a new student, I always have to take valuable lesson time to teach it again. I'm so glad you made this awesome video. I will use this with my students. Thank you!
I was very surprised. My lessons online were done with zoom but Stephanie had so much trouble and just assumed it was my router. We switched to FaceTime. But this sounds awesome.
Certainly your internet connection plays a big part in it. But what I was noticing was that students who used to share really nice audio quality were all of a sudden sounding really choppy. It seems that some of the 2023 updates caused a lot of new problems. Noise reduction is great for office meetings, but not so great for musical instruments.
Thanks so much for this! I have been driven mad by my student's sound disappearing as I am trying to hear them. I will refer them to this video and information!
This is not for students but maybe for some teachers: Another step I took as a teacher was to hook in a Blue Yeti microphone to my laptop and then select on Zoom for that to be the active mic instead of my laptop mic. If I am also on Original Sound for Musicians, this improves the quality of the sound going to my student. But I do find that when I plug the Blue Yeti in to my computer, the Original Sound goes off and I have to re-set it by hand. AND I have to go into audio settings and make sure that "USB" (Blue Yeti) is the microphone that is going to be active. I did also try several other microphones and the Blue Yeti was the best sound reproduction. And the Blue Yeti doesn't improve things at all UNLESS I have chosen Original Sound for Musicians.
Hi Carolyn, the USB Blue Yeti is a great solution for anyone on a laptop or desktop. If I do a video for laptop and desktop users that is certainly a nice simple workflow that levels up the audio quality! Thanks for sharing!
Anne, this was so illuminating! Thank you! Your instructions to improve the sound are so clear and detailed with the screenshots of actual menu choices, so there's no confusion.

Thank you so much! I did not realize that after enabling the original sound for meetings that you needed to tap on the three dots on screen during the meetings every time to enable original sound. How inconvenient that it can’t be set as default! I’d actually given up until today .
This is SO helpful Anne. I knew how to enable this on my laptop, so my students could hear my harp. But my students using an iPad couldn't see how to enable Original Sound for Musicians on the iPad, so I couldn't hear their harp well. Now they will be able to enable Original Sound with your clear instructions. I appreciate that your video helps students without them needing to buy external stuff. Thank you thank you!

We followed your instructions and found such an improvement today. All of your videos are so well produced and the audio is wonderful!
Hi Jonathan! I'm so happy to hear that these hints were helpful! No doubt Zoom will change the settings again, but for now it is making a big difference!
Thanks for sharing Anne. This takes me back to teaching piano during the pandemic. Such a steep learning curve using software which people didn’t understand. I’m fortunate now to have all my pupils back in person.
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic I think the thing I found hardest was not being able to communicate with the pupil whilst they were playing as my sound was cut off. I couldn’t just say, “Ok, let’s just stop there and look at that little section again.” I had to wait until they got further on before being able to go back to work on a mistake.
Definitely a difference! The sound totally cut out in default mode! I never really knew what original sound was. One harpist I know uses a platform specifically designed for musicians rather than Zoom for her online lessons (not sure what it is). I am sure this problem is why. Thanks for the info! 👍
It's quite shocking to find out what the default mode sounds like! Yes, there other platforms like Forte, Rock Out Loud, Facetime and GoogleMeet. You have to weigh the pros and cons for each one. I'm hoping that if I can get all of my students using original sound I won't have to make a platform change.

Very interesting. I can't believe that a major tech company such as Zoom could make such a "defective" product. I sure hope so.

Anne, this is a wonderful video! I'm forwarding this to my online students. What I struggle with on the "teacher" end is dealing with audio being out of synch with video as it leaves Zoom. It's plagued me for the past year. Are there any tricks that you use to synch your interface audio with your camera? Thanks so much for your wonderful content. Subscribed!
There are other platforms that apparently do a better job with syncing (do mean playing along with your student?) If it's syncing your own audio and video that sounds like an internet speed issue to me.
I was very surprised! I noticed that it looks like you have GarageBand open on your computer to use Zoom? Could you please make another video letting us know how to do a more professional Zoom setup like yours? I use an iPad for Zoom. Thank you for this video. It was very enlightening!

It's similar on a laptop, Amelia. You have to enable original sound for musicians in the settings. But again, it always defaults to OFF. So look in the upper left corner and click "Original Sound for Musicians: ON". On a laptop it also makes a big difference to use a simple little USB microphone like a Blue Yeti Nano.
Similar, Jill. You have to "enable original sound for musicians" in the audio settings. Then in every meeting turn it ON, you'll be able to see it in the upper left corner of the Zoom window. Best improvement you could make for a laptop is to get a USB microphone like a Blue Yeti Nano.
Why is this considered to be for musicians? I am a French student who has Zoom lessons in exceptional circumstances, and these gaps in sound happen there too. I plan to share this with my teacher and see if the situation improves. Thank you very much for this video.
The default audio setting is probably the better option for speech. Zoom does a good job at noise reduction and makes the human voice sound clear and rich. Unfortunately the default noise reduction cuts out the sustain of music instruments. Could you hear how when I enabled original sound the audio was noisier, but the harp's sustain could be heard.
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic Yesterday I had an online harp lesson, an exceptional situation, and we didn’t have a lot of time to figure out what was going on. But I did remember your video, although I did not remember the details of the required changes, and this morning I looked for it. Hopefully we will get it right the next time, if there is one, that we need to do an online lesson. Thank you so much for this video. I have sent it to my teacher, who was aware of the different settings, but when you never need to use them you don’t always remember the details. As a follow up to my previous question about my French class, the default settings were fine, but in an online yoga class none of the students could hear the bell at the beginning of class, or the music for savasana at the end of class, so my yoga teacher really appreciated your video. Thank you again for sharing the information.
what about MacBook Air Laptops. i am in classes with a teacher you uses Sound, his voice, when he does scales or hits low or high notes, we lose him, souind is distorted. apparently this problem has been going on for years. i would like to resolve it. is there any way to be in touch with you directly. the Zoom screens are different than what is shown in other videos i am looking at. these classes are very valuable to me, yet they are being distorted, thus diminshing the Sound, diminishing the experience and the value. i would Love to Solve this.
Thank you so much for this Anne, it looks so simple and effective but I don't use phone or iPad. Any chance of a similar video for a desktop (iMac)? That is really different from what you show here.. I've tried everything in the audio section but no difference. Thanks you again.
You're right, laptops and desktops are a little different, so that's why I didn't include them in this video. It still comes down to turning ON original sound for musicians in every session.
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic Thank you so much for replying so quickly. I had clicked on the button for Original Musicians in the settings part yesterday and it still hadn't worked. After reading your comment here I looked again and the message on the top of the screen said it was off, then I realized I had to click on it to toggle to on and it worked! @@annecrosbygaudetmusic Thank you for the info! Your sound system sounds absolutely perfect!
@@lindafitak Thank you! I worked really hard to get there!
Wow, I didn't realize I sounded that terrible! I need to see if this also will work on my laptop. I imagine it would.
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic thanks!
Really helpful! I use my MacBook Pro laptop for music lessons - similar idea?
Similar, Jill. You have to "enable original sound for musicians" in the audio settings. Then in every meeting turn it ON, you'll be able to see it in the upper left corner of the Zoom window. Best improvement you could make for a laptop is to get a USB microphone like a Blue Yeti Nano.
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic thanks Anne! I have a USB mic but couldn’t get it to work - must be a setting I don’t know about!
@@jillgeary1313 It's usually as simple as plugging it into your computer and selecting it in the Zoom microphone settings.
Thank you fro pointing that out. I did a Zoom recording then to hear how it went and although not exactly high fidelity lol, it was WAAAY better.Thank you
@@esmeboone9591 You got it! Well done 🙂

Please can you help me It will be a big help for me .I like piano a lot and i don't want to lose my music course which i am doing from Spain .My teacher has also tried to sort out this audio issue but we both could not remove this Audio Problem
Please do reply ! My god bless you
What mic did you use?
Is the "use original audio" option on iPad the same as " original sound"???? Please clarify
The default settings choppy sound is exactly what happens to my saxophone lessons.
Do I need to be in lessons to do this?? Or can I do this after logging of of my lessons???
Please clarify
I am on a computer using my webcom and a mike...it is relevant for me?
Hi Wendy, good job adding a mic and webcam to level up your Zoom meetings. Just make sure you know how to turn ON original sound for musicians in every session.
I take voice lessons on Zoom. I use my laptop, which is attached to a large external monitor. I assume I can just use the same setting for my laptop as you described for iphone and ipad. Is that correct?
It's easier on the laptop because you can see if original sound is on or off in the upper left corner.
But what about those of us who use a pc instead of an iPhone or iPad?! I know I tried doing this but it didn't seem to work for everything (harp and recorder).
I decided to focus this video on iPhones and iPads, because I was having trouble talking my students through the settings during their lessons. You’re right, laptops and desktops are another kettle of fish!
Android? Same?
