    I love how David Tennant's regeneration was so violent and drawn-out it almost destroyed the TARDIS, but Smith's was like "Oops, I farted and now I have a new face."

      Well he had just regenerated on top of the clock tower. He had essentially regenerated all the way, but was just holding the body change back to give Clara time to see him once more. Once he stopped holding it back, he just snapped right into the new body.

      Pat Troughton's Doctor is an interesting Doctor. It is the only regeneration that was not shown to the point that we didn't see who the new Doctor was going to be . After the Time Lords moved the second Doctor to the TARDIS, they sent him directly to Earth. We're supposing that the shock of regenerating to Jon Pertwee caused Pat to lie down on the TARDIS floor while the regeneration completed itself...

      The reason for the fast regeneration, if you were listening is because he already let out a lot of regeneration energy and it reset his body to be younger, he stopped the process for a bit most likely so Clara could say goodbye. Then he didn't have a lot more regenerating to do so it was just a quick flash.

  • @coldfission
    @coldfission 7 лет назад +613

    My headcanon is that the regeneration takes progressively more energy the more regenerations are carried out. Hence why the early regenerations are quite serene. From the 7th into 8th doctor onwards, energy discharges start and increase in intensity up until 10th-11th where the Tardis is damaged by the regeneration and 11ths regeneration in Trenzalor was so big that he shouldn't have survived it (blowing up most of the town of Christmas and a Dalek battleship in the process). Then the 11th-12th's real regeneration was instant and low-energy. This would also explain the Master's appearance in the old series when he regenerated once too many times, turning into a burned husk.
    I hope the trend becomes canon when Capaldi hangs up his rather excellent jacket and serenely transitions to lucky number 13.

    • @Modguy99
      @Modguy99 7 лет назад +6

      coldfission I agree with this theory.

    • @trashpanda684
      @trashpanda684 7 лет назад +14

      I think it could work either way with Capaldi to whoever will be 13 either being a calm regeneration or even more explosive, since yes it is an early regeneration in a new cycle but then again that cycle shouldn't have existed in the first place so maybe it will still end up using _a lot_ of regeneration energy. I guess we'll just have to wait to find out. I think you're right, though. However, why are the other Time Lords regenerating in similar manners now (I suppose at this point all of the other Time Lords are also in their later regenerations, so let's just excuse it that way)? The only thing that might make this theory invalid is how River only had maybe (3?) Regenerations yet they all occurred in similar manners to The Doctor in his late ones. But again, she was also an anomaly, so maybe it works like that.
      Idk, I get way into these sometimes.

    • @marknorth8904
      @marknorth8904 7 лет назад +10

      The high energy regenerations began with Mc Gann drinking the Sisterhood of Karn's mixture into a Doctor much better suited mentally and emotionally to be a War Doctor. The excess energy after that regeneration did not exhaust itself until Matt's regeneration to Perter C...

    • @coldfission
      @coldfission 7 лет назад +8

      I think you're neglecting the movie (which is canon now) and 6-7.
      6-7 was the first to have a kind of wavy-line effect eminating from his face which is reminiscent of the later transitions (in reality this was done to hide the fact that Colin Baker refused to return for his regeneration scene, making Sylvester McCoy the only person to play two separate incarnations of the Doctor!). But more troubling to your idea is the energy discharges that occur with 7-8 in the movie. Now of course, you could explain each individual change as a one-off. So there are electrical discharges in 7-8 because the doctor was accidentally electrocuted before his delayed regeneration. 8 to War was energetic due to the Sisterhood's mixture, War to 9 was the same as 9 to 10 (give or take) as they were both "standard" despite the latter being due to absorbing the energy of the time vortex (!), 10-11 was highly energetic, damaging the Tardis because 10 didn't want to go and 11 to 11 (reset) was explosive just because that's what resets are like but I think my explanation of a trend of increasingly energetic transitions is simpler and answers more questions (like why there is a limit in the first place - which is now explicitly biological and not imposed by Timelord society.). But that's just me!

    • @somerandomguy2073
      @somerandomguy2073 7 лет назад +10

      coldfission: Baker didn't refuse to return fir the regeneration. He said that he would only do it if he could have a final story to lead up to it rather than cameo his own death scene (not exactly a big ask). The producers said they would get back to him and the next he heard about it was when he watched his own regeneration on TV.

    As everyone says stuff about tenannt and Matt Smith's regeneration, I think Eccleston's was great, his final line "So was I" wasn't out of sadness or fear, it was the doctor finally loving himself and maybe forgiving himself just a bit over the time war. It was such a beautiful moment, gives me chills every time.

      Depends. The original explanation of what he was was the Doctor's final incarnation, going back to try and take his past self's regenerations, paradoxes be damned. But in the story it was written that he's a 'distillation of the Doctor's evil between his 12th and 13th incarnations (2nd Tennant regeneration and Smith)

      @Jotari 7 лет назад +26

      I reckon he could stay a bit longer. The others were younger actors who didn't want to be type casted and would like to move forward with their careers. Capaldi is already a well established actor who has a big legacy behind him before Doctor Who so he really has no reason to leave so long as he's enjoying it.

    • @scaper8
      @scaper8 7 лет назад +35

      I don't want him to go too soon. A good four or five season stretch would be great.
      I hope the "three and gone" thing doesn't become a hard rule. Vary it; some one-to-two years, some three-to-four years, and occasionally a five-to-six year run. Much more than that may be too long. Even Baker got old after a while.

      The Watcher was a projection of the doctor a sort of embryonic fifth doctor. He waited and bided his time waiting for the fourth doctor to fall to the ground at the Pharos Project. Fourth knew his time was up and fifth knew his becoming was near. Also it's a sly reference to what the second doctor said to Ben. I'd like to see a butterfly fit back into it's chrysalis...

    I adore McGann's regeneration scene. He has always been my favourite Doctor, and that crucial final scene was LONG overdue. I love how utterly broken his Doctor is by the end.
    For my favourite regeneration scene? It might actually be Troughton's. Currently, anyway. I just love how his Doctor sacrificed so much - his friendship with his companions, his freedom, his very life - just to make sure that he did the right thing. It's an incredible exit, and one key reason why The War Games is one of my favourites.

      I completely agree with you man. Tennant's doctor got so self-absorbed. first, he literally regenerated into himself. and then when he did die, he went out like such a whiner 'waaah i don't want to go'. like i get it you're sad. but every other doctor died, and most of them died like real men. hartnell's last words: 'stay warm'. troughton was literally executed so i can't really blame him for being scared in that circumstance. pertwee went out trying to console sara: 'where there's life.. there's...' . I could go on about this forever. and yeah, what you said is another part of why the caves of androzani is so awesome. he goes out selflessly, not selfishly. tennant could have definitely learned more from his predecessor in timecrash. and that's why it bugs me when all the fan girls are like 'waaah it's sooo sad' whereas really they're just sad that their cutie died. but in the end they're not true whovians because they just can't appreciate what being the doctor is really all about.

      Well he did know that the next regeneration would be his (at that time) last one, and only lived for 6 years compared to the however many that other doctors had, so I think at that point it's less a point of "I'm so great dont make me leave" and more a case of, as he said "I could do so much more"

    Being a fan of Tennant's doctor isn't a case of fangirling, he was just brilliant in his own way, his last words suited his personality just the way it is. Fun, quirky, adventurous, he ran his course and he wanted to do so much more, he was alone with no one beside him, this version of the Doctor especially suffered serious relationship issues after the time war. Tenant made the Doctor relatable and that's why I liked him the most out of all the doctors. And I'm younger so I generally favour the post 2005 series, and 10 is my favourite. Capaldi for me is particularly unique but the writing by Moffat has made him a bit flat, you don't really get that stand out feature that Tennant and Smith had with their characters maybe the eyebrows haha.

      also keep in mind he was only 10 for like 3 years, while he was matt for around 1300 years. Most doctors last a couple centuries, 10 accomplished so much in his 3 years, imagine what he would have accomplished if he had lived for 3 centuries.

    1. Davison - C.Baker. Dramatic, nostalgic, and uncertain.
    2. Tennant - Smith. The RTD era is ending, but the show never ends.
    3. T.Baker - Davison. Simply beautiful.
    4. Eccleston - Tennant. Simple, elegant, and just nice.
    5. Smith - Capaldi. It's a two-parter, something different, yet still profound.
    6. McGann - Hurt. 17 year wait, didn't disappoint. Big Finish FTW.
    7. Pertwee - T.Baker. Another beautiful, simple one.
    8. Troughton - Pertwee. Traumatic and heartbreaking.
    9. C.Baker - McCoy. The Brink of Death audio saved this regeneration from the bottom spot. His future is in safe hands, indeed.
    10. Hurt - Eccleston. Convenient but lovely still. Wish Eccleston had actually been there to complete the scene.
    11. Hartnell - Troughton. "It's far from being all over" gives me chills every time.
    12. McCoy - McGann. The Frankenstein imagery is neat (especially given the Eighth Doctor's connection to Mary Shelley) but my favorite part of this regeneration is McCoy on the operating table, insisting that "I am not like you!"
    13. Tennant - Tennant. Great cliffhanger, not very emotional or meaningful.

      Tbh the way I see it, the Tennant to Tennant regeneration was a wasted regeneration that also complicated the numbering system of the Doctors. Like, the War Doctor screwed up the numbering enough, having it be one off, but making Tennant's meta-crisis regeneration count just screwed it up even more. Like, why is the Twelfth Doctor really the fourteenth incarnation?

    The Tenth Doctor's regeneration always hits different. It really felt like the fans emotions for David's departure were integrated into it. Meanwhile, I'll never forget how shook I was by Matt's snap change to Peter. (Don't) Blink and you'll miss it. 😅

    There are so many of these videos that only show the regeneration itself. I was expecting the "Official" one to at least show us the moments leading up to each of the Doctor's deaths. It would be great for those unfamiliar with classic episodes to see some context.
    Still, the video presentation is great.

      Agree, the classic regenerations are given much less airtime here.

    • @TheMoonRover

      If you want context:
      1) He seems unwell during the events of _The Tenth Planet_ then collapses. He says his body is "wearing a bit thin" meaning old age.
      2) The events of _The War Games_ eventually result in the Doctor going to his as-yet-unnamed home planet, Gallifrey. He broke the rule of non-intervention, so the Time Lords force the Doctor to regenerate and exile him to Earth, where he remains stranded for some time.
      3) The Doctor goes to confront the Great One, leader of the _Planet of Spiders,_ but is poisoned by radiation present in the caves.
      4) After working together to stop the universe from decaying during _Logopolis,_ the Master tricks the Doctor into falling from the top of the radio telescope.
      5) The Doctor and Peri are both infected with a disease in _The Caves of Androzani,_ but there is only one sample of the andidote, which the Doctor gives to Peri.
      6) The TARDIS is struck by laser beams at the start of _Time and the Rani,_ and crashes, then the Doctor regenerates. No other explanation is given on-screen, although there is a Big Finish audio called _The Last Adventure_ which goes into more detail.
      7) The Doctor is randomly shot by a street gang at the start of the TV Movie. Medical doctors attempt to operate, but make things worse as they are unfamiliar with his anatomy.
      Everything after that is the new series, and it sounds like you know that already.

    My favorite regeneration is Eccleston to Tennant. I think maybe because, even though it was sad, he kinda left me with a happy feel since he went out smiling after sacrificing himself to save someone he loved. It was truly romantic and I thought his last words did him perfect justice.
    On the other hand, I think my least favorite might actually be Tennant's to Smith's. Then again, maybe "least favorite" might not be the way to put it, because it wasn't as if it wasn't beautifully done or anything. It was just the hardest to watch. He went in tears after losing everyone he loved, frightened to regenerate for fear of what he would become. That tragedy is part of what makes him one of my favorite versions of the Doctor, but pretty much the entirety of The End of Time is excruciating.

    Regardless of who's your favorite Doctor, I truly believe that 11th is the most emotional of them all. It's so well thought, brilliantly acted and it really portrays where the Doctor stands at this stage of his life, not only because the new regeneration cycle but also because he is much older and wiser yet still hopeful, that was the best about Matt's Doctor and Moffat really made him justice. Also, for the first time you can sense the actor saying goodbye to this wonderful character and universe that is truly bigger than any of them, which must be really hard, painfully so, and you can feel it in the speech and heartbreaking performance.

    Patrick Troughton had the hardest job out of anyone who has played the doctor as it was up to him to convince the audience he was still the doctor but with a different face. Thankfully he pulled it off like the pro he was because if he didn't, the show would have disappeared right there and then. I would say christopher eccleston had a tough job as the doctor to because not only did he have to not only introduce himself as the doctor and explain who he was to people who might have never see the show before but to older viewers who had grown up with the show that he was still the doctor and like Troughton he pulled it off big time.
