  • The brilliant Robin Cousins, aged only 18 here and before he went to Carlo Fassi, delivered a stunning free skate with five triples to Three Blind Mice which, according to press reports of the time, was performed before nine blind judges, such were his low marks compared to many skaters above him who did not skate to anywhere near this level. He is coached here by the legendary Gladys Hogg and while his skating would develop beyond recognition over the next four years, this is still a very rare glimpse at an absolutely standout performance in his amateur career.

    What an absolute gem from the archives floskate. It has that unmistakable "Robin flow" - so smooth, so liquid and 5 triples. So undermarked.

      @npe1 6 месяцев назад +5

      @@paulasfigureskating5612 Technically with 5 clean triples, two in combination and two gorgeous double axels, this was better than the top 5, including John Curry who landed 3 triples to Robin's 5. As for style and artistry this was better than Kovalev and Hoffmann, although not yet quite up to the standard of Curry or Cranston but Robin already had that lovely flow and that beautiful statuesque carriage. Certainly should have been in the top 5 in the free skate.

      @@npe1that 5.4 is a trash mark.
      I guess they dropped him because he skated "young", but he should have been in the top 5.

    Thank you so much, floskate. I had read about Robin's skate here but never seen it. What amazing line, effortless ease of movement and lightness in the jumps, like he was floating. Incredibly mature style for an 18-year-old. Music: Tres Ratones Ciegos (Stanley Black and his Orchestra)

    This was back in the day when the skating actually went with the music, and skaters skated with flare and style. A single Axel could almost be as affective as a triple when done with height and flare.

    • @paunitka7
      @paunitka7 4 месяца назад +1

      And now skating doesn't go with music? Well, that's news. Have you actually watched any skating recently?
      As for single Axels - sorry, but Hanyu's are more spectacular.
      Don't get me wrong, this skater is great, but there is no need to hate current day athletes.

    • @andrewthompson7526
      @andrewthompson7526 4 месяца назад

      No one is hating the young athletes of today but Robin was a superb technician and like Hanyu Yuzuru had enormous height in his jumps. His open axel remains one of the highest ever recorded. You can’t compare the two different generations though. Skating was a very different sport then to what is has become.

      @@andrewthompson7526 "No one is hating" - are you sure? Because to me the sentence "back in the day ... skaters skated with flare and style" is exactly that: hating the present day skaters. It's the first commentator that compared past athletes with what we see now. I am strongly against such comparisons, therefore I had to react.

    Do you know if there is any footage of any quadruple jump attempts before 1984? For example, I've heard that Robert Wagenhoffer could do them in practice (I think I've heard that he's tried quad toe and quad loop) but I have never been able to find any footage of any quads before 1984.
    edit: I've also read a quote from donald jackson that says he's tried for quad salchows before, it would be really interesting if there was any footage

      I don't think there are any such clips of anyone doing a quad before 1984 on YT. There is of course footage of David Jenkins, World Champion 1957 to 1960 and 1960 Olympic Champion doing a triple axel as early as 1957. It's here: ruclips.net/video/w2unFSmlNjI/видео.html
