Hard to believe it 40 years since he won Olympic Gold. He still remains one of the most brilliant natural skaters of all time. Finest of edge work, speed, great musicality. Few skaters could match Robin for that. His skating is still breathtaking all these years later. In an age when skating has gone jump crazy and focuses on racking up points it has lost so much of this artistry. Robin was a true figure skater, an artist on ice. Sad this is missing so much today.
I saw Robin skate this routine at Wembley on the champions tour a few months after this. I was in the front row, rink side. He was absolutely magical, over 40 years ago and still so clear in my memory. Fantastic!
These performances were so much better even than his Gold winning Olympic performance. I still get chills watching this 42 years later. No other skater has been able to match this artistry shown in this exhibition since then in my mind. I still continue to watch this just to remind myself what skating can be.
In my 56 years of watching the Olympics, I have to say that Robin remains my favorite skater of ALL time. The beauty in his "length" that brings grace to his moves still brings me joy to watch. There have been many talented skaters over the years, but to combine the immense talent with the ability to entertain and skate as if they were born on the ice....he has it all.
Best skating routines ever caught on tape. Completely weightless jumps, flawless lines, unbelievable spins. I recorded this performance on a casette player back on 1980, and have thought of his skate since. I would trade 10 years of my life to be able to do a tenth of what he did here. Unbelievable.
He still owns the world record for the longest figure skating jump - 19 ft 1 inch. No one has ever done jumps as huge as these - and, like John Curry, he could do reverse spins too. Amazing.
Agreed! Even though I have found a new favorite: Alexei Yagudin in 2002 (22 years later)! Those steps in the exhibition (and as I recall in the short program too) were out of this world!
I watched the men's ice skating final at the Lake Placid Olympics staying up well into the night to see Robin Cousins win his gold medal. He was my hero then! He hasn't stopped being one of my heroes ever since. What majesty he brought to the ice!
It was that period in all the sports in the 80s that you knew the athletes name you had the Coe Vs ovett thing , Botham, Daley Thompson, wells.you had world class exciting sports commentary .
What about 2002 Alexei Yagudin? Just go for the exhibition first - those steps on the ice - simply incredible! Nevertheless Robin Cousins is still one of my favorite male skaters of all time (and even choreographed Denise Biellmann's pro programs)! :D
@@MusikPiratCH Thanks for introducing Robin Cousins to me:), maybe to some others too. I saw you mentioned him under a Yagudin video, I never heard about him before otherwise. What a dancer, I like his style. And that he skated to Michael’s music more than once. Glad I know about him now.
I am a big Hanyu fan after rediscovering figure skating in 2015 following a 20 year hiatus (life happens!) - but my first men's singles favourite was Robin in the late 1970s - his skating was just stunning in his time, and still now it brings tears to my eyes. I remember staying up late as a teen to watch Robin at the 1980 Olympics! Watching Robin now I can see why I was so immediately attracted to Yuzuru's style after discovering him; technical and artistic brilliance with amazing musicality, just like Robin Cousins. Both axel specialists too! And both edit(ed) their own music. Robin trained as an ice dancer as well as a singles skater, and you can see his beautiful posture and dance skills in his singles skating; just beautiful! Stood out from all the rest, just like Hanyu does today.
this gave me goose bumps in 1980. still gives me goose bumps every time I watch this performancet. I think Robin was the ice skater who sold this sport to the tropical countries.
THE KING !!!.. The only the unique the greatest skater of all time he has everything: Great athlete artistic sense and incredible musicality virtuoso technique breathtaking speed class elegance allure charisma and eternal modernity And what a smile !!.. Sorry guys but no skater comes close to him. And especially not today because apart from jumping again and again, now no current skater has a single one of Cousins' extra terrestrial qualities..
Thanks for posting this. I can't skate at all but I used to love to watch it. I saw this particular performance on TV in 1980 and have remembered it for 30 years as probably the best skating I've ever seen - even remembered the two songs he used. This guy skates like Baryshnikov dances, it looks effortless and incredibly graceful. I'm very happy to be able to watch this again.
Watching Robin again ,after all those years, brings back memories of his Gold medal and his tears watching our beloved Union Jack! He’s the world’s best and always will be! So very proud to be British!
One of my favourite routines - superb dancing to Michael Jackson - gives me shivers every time I see it. Also what a fantastic jump and landing at 6.27
Michael Jackson must have been so proud that Robin chose to skate to his music and didn’t he do him proud. I was just a kid but my mum let me stay up really late to watch him.
"With you I'm Born Again" is the very BEST music for a figure skating performance. Would be my first choice if I were a skater for sure and Robin mastered it to a "T" ... and how!!!! He's truly one of the best figure skaters in the world to hit the ice in my book!! Really miss this sport. It was more than just a sport it was true art on ice.
And I couldn't really get enough watching it over and over again for it has imprinted greatly in my memory which took decades to see this again. It has got the rhythm, so tidy, the connection with both songs is fabulous.. . this song " With you I'm born again" became my favorite and I could still remember used the song of Michael J. for the dance competion when I was in high schoo.Having the rhythm and body type like him, I could do it as well then. Maybe my child will fullfill this dream!
For me Robin will forever be the best ice skater of all times!!!I remember watching this as a child and was soooo amazed❤❤❤❤❤I still have goosebumps after so many years!!!
Have really tried finding this video and found it easily...I just love this performance. It's flawless, well detailed, elegant, FANTASTIC!!! Din't know his name then, but I've seen this when I was a kid and got inspired to do it. But I was in my 30's when I becdame active in the ice rinks and I felt not young anymore to do it. But his interpretation of the music, the rhythm of the movement....really incredible! Big salute!
La classe à l'état pur ! Perfection du geste jusque dans les moindres détails, musicalité,imagination .......! Un artiste et un sportif hors du commun ! J'ai retrouvé intacte la magie de l'époque ! Quel plaisir !
I remember this, thanks for posting. Superb usage of edges, jumps, spins, artistry and music interpretation. Had the audience from the first note. I think he choreographed his programs.
I love watching Dancing On Ice, but I was watching a repeat of a show where they showed a clip of Robin doing the Russian splits, which I thought was amazing. Watching this performance was wonderful, he's so graceful and focused on the ice! It's totally made me respect his scoring and comments on the show even more now. Wish there was more stuff like this on TV than footie and all that :)
Would love to hear Robin talk about what it felt like to do this routine and what inspired him to choose this MJ song. He's been my #1 since these Olympics and wish we had the opportunity stateside to see all his post Olympic successful accomplishments he has had in GB and on the Continent. He should sell DVD's of all his work on his website!
