I struggled with opioid addiction from sixteen to thirty-seven and was saddened to hear Andy got cancer after managing to extricate himself from the vice-like grip of drugs. That story of Moz kicking him out of the band for drug use always rankled with me. Why? It's a bloody rock band, Steven, for pity's sake.
@vaseofflowers4619 As brilliant a writer as he is, he still suffers from a serious blindness to see his own dictatorial behaviour. Who admonishes a venue simply for having MEAT cooked nearby ... it staggers the mind. In point of fact, The Smiths only have ONE song that annoys me - and that's Meat Is Murder. It's death FOR A REASON and it's to fill the belly (of the beast ... according to ole Mozza, we'll assume)
I had the awesome privilege of having dinner with both Andy and Mike at the Beverly Hills Hard Rock Cafe. I won a raffle during the Smiths convention in Pasadena CA in the mid late 90s. These blokes were sterling, absolutely sterling. I will never forget that night. I have pictures and I occasionally view them. Thanks Andy for your music. Long live The Smiths!
You can see the pain in Mike there. They must’ve been so close. One of the all time great rhythm sections for me. Mike is a top bloke and RIP Andy. What a legacy you left behind
Andy’s bass was such a big part of their songs and the Smiths sounded like nobody else around. They defined the 80s, amazing contribution not just to music but our lives! RIP
*Very big statement about 'defining' the 80s. They certainly defined a certain style of playing and writing, but so many other distinctive forms were created and elaborated on. I regard the wonderfully 'erratic' and intelligent Sonic Youth as harbinger/creates of an inimitable, furious and captivating sound as well. NIN cannot be overlooked, also (nor WHAM)*
I hope Mike knows how unbelievably important he is to millions of Smiths fans. You were the backbone Mike. I’m in my mid fifties heterosexual and if I met you I’d hug you til you’d had enough. You’re up there with the buggies Mike. Maybe even at the top. Cheers from Toronto, Mike
Such great tributes from Mike here, and from Johnny and Morrissey. For a band that seemed to have a lot of inner friction, they all really loved Andy. RIP 🙏
Still can't quite believe that he's dead....he was only young and it just isn't fair.....all of the sick evil people in the world and it had to be Andy rourke.......just not fucking right is it? Rest in peace mate......love eternal
The Reading Hexagon on the Meat is Murder tour is where I first come into contact with Andy and Mike as naive 16 year old. It wasn’t much, just shook hands with them both and they acknowledged me as a fan standing round the back door of the venue. The other two…….. Salt of the earth Mike and Andy. True friendship between them both.
What a lovely and sincere interview - Andy, you will be sorely missed, and Mike what a joy you brought to me in my youth in 1984. Long live The Smiths!
Andy was the bassist we all wanted to be, but knew it was impossible, he was so gifted, his basslines were almost untouchable. A beautiful tribute from Mike, he'll be very sadly missed.
It's hard to get your head around the fact that we were just young kids back then, and LOOKED like young kids too. We're all the old folks now, with our ailments and grey hair and it still feels to me, like it probably has to a hundred generations before - just strange, what time does to us. My point is just that it's hard and it's sad, to have to say goodbye to anyone we held in esteem. Andy was unique in both style and approach to playing, and very seldom took the path of least resistance, with his playing. The Smiths would not have been as good without Andy and Mike building the strong foundations, the songs sat atop. RIP Andy and Thanks Mike for being a good friend until the very end.
Mike and Andy never got 25%. Morrissey refused to pay Mike or Andy what they were owed for decades even for the many years that Morrissey knew Andy had cancer and required costly life prolonging medical treatments in America, presumably without health insurance. Andy wasn’t a party to the final court judgement giving Mike 25% royalties, he had previously made an agreement for a one time sum due to financial difficulties. But even then he wasn’t paid by Morrissey the remainder of royalties he was owed.
That is so beautiful, and Mike Joyce is one hell of a drummer and human being as well. What a pity the Smiths ended after only a short time. I think that the combination of the 4 of them together was just magic!
Had the pleasure of meeting him. If the rest of the ppl in this mad world had half the sense of humor he had the world would be a much better place. Such an underrated bassist....
Underrated by who? He's always been rated - possibly overrated if anything. This comment appears in every single Andy Rourke video and it beats the hell out of me why people keep saying that.
@Talismanpendants I've noticed "underrated" appears in many music videos on RUclips, even on Beatles videos. I suppose the person saying it is trying to imply some insight or refined taste that goes against the grain.
You could tell how much he cared for this man by the way he breaks up in the last two segments. Rest in peace Andy and thank you for the good times and great music.
I always knew I loved Andy's playing, knew he was one of my favorites. Just before Andy's passing I was playing with some friends and the guy doing sound said, you play great, but maybe a bit too much movement for this song. It was cool, but it got me to thinking, why do I want to move all over. That's when it hit me that Andy was not only one of my favs, but almost certainly the most influential on my style...though I never really realized. About 3 days later I read the news. RIP Andy - and thank you so much! 🙏💙🎸
Bass and drum....strong connection within any band. Andy was one of a kind.....it makes me happy to hear all the accolades for this brilliant yet down to earth musician.
Andy Rourke was just as irreplaceable in The Smiths as the other members were, and it's obvious when you listen to Barbarism begins at home, The draize train and many more songs, that he was a better bassplayer than his famous rolemodels, with a delicious funkiness to it that originated from no one but himself. I was very sad to learn he has passed away, much too soon. This is so unfair.
I swear I feel like the Smiths were the Vermeer of British pop music....raising the mundane and quotidian and very, very human to the level of the divine.
Solid words, Mike. I play bass and Andy was my main influence. I play Fender because he did and, when I learned that he played a Yamaha for his more lively parts, I bought a Yamaha. The Smiths are one of those very rare bands that finds a new following every generation and their fans are forever fans. I have never heard anyone say "I can't believe I used to be into The Smiths."
The magic that Andy and Mike created together has a massive massive part on why the Smiths are so great, one of the greatest rhythm sections of all time!
I've always said that for decades about "the rhythm section" of The Smiths, absolutely solid and new at the same time. Rourke and Joyce don't get enough credit, and the Smiths are truly one of the best bands ever. No on sounded like them in the day and no one still to this day. It's a bummer that Rourke passed so young, but his music with The Smiths will be influential for generations, as it already has been
I didn't know of his passing! Wow he's such a legend. I have been trying to learn to play "Barbarism starts at Home" and gave me such respect for Andy coming up with such a groove. Thank you Andy, sorry to hear of the passing. The music lives on!
oh this made me tear up 😢 i have loved The Smiths since i first heard them in 1984. each member was so, so talented. those songs never get old for me. just as amazing to listen to today as they were almost 40 years ago. RIP Andy ❤
From the heart from Mike and it feels like it hasn't sunk in properly with him. These people created and played songs that saved our lives back in the 80s.
Absolutely. 100% agree. The music on the radio back then was terrible and you're right, The Smiths were there for those of us who disliked all that manufactured synth pop. Radio One, Steve Wright in particular, despised The Smiths - hence Hang the DJ
What a fantastic tribute - the legacy of the music speaks for itself but Mikes words shows the calibre of the man and the friend. RIP Andy and thank you.
59. Not old. Rest in Peace and thank you. Random memories of driving around San Diego in my '67 bug listening to "Barbarism begins at home" and all the other songs of the Smiths.
Mike grew into The Smiths, and his drumming improved considerably, very quickly, during 1983/84 (the recordings of The Smiths’ three Hacienda gigs from 1983 show that rapid improvement). When Andy arrived, however, he was pretty much the finished article from day one, and he gave the group a swing most other indie groups from the time just didn’t have.
Thank you so much for posting this Tysongreer 2 cant explain what this means to me didnt see this on TV. The Smiths were and will always be the Greatest Band ever, and what a tribute from Mike .
I remember first time hearing Smiths and hearing the jangly 80s guitar, and extremely weird but extremely tight bass, and that's what hooked me more and more. What an amazing bass player, I mean "Well I wonder", the bass makes the mood for the entire track.
The bass line on 'Barbarism Begins At Home' is so good Rourke should have got a writing credit for it. Joyce and Rourke were probably the greatest rhythm section of indie rock, and arguably should be spoken of with the reverence as Sly & Robbie. They were that f*cking good.
People seem to be defining “composer” as the one who wrote the music first. Clearly Andy wrote music for the songs, but he wrote it second after the guitar parts, so people wrongly conclude that doesn’t count as writing the song. With some songs like Barbarism, the guitar could not possibly have come first. Clearly Andy wrote the bass part first. The fact that he didn’t get song writing credits is due to human power / politics / control in the band. Morrissey and Marr formed the band and Andy joined a little later, and for Johnny, ever since then, the Smiths and their music were always his band despite the actual musical contributions and role.
@@XY-xn4op I've been thinking about this a bit more and although I think what you say is sometimes true, I do think that any great guitarist is more than capable of writing the bass parts. For example David Gilmour playing bass on Pink Floyds 'Sheep (3 different ones)' as Waters couldn't quite get it right himself. But I totally agree with you about power / politics / control.
When I was in the early days of learning guitar, I had to switch to bass. There was no internet then so I would put on a tape and but by bit learn Andys bass lines. I remember how they seemed so random.. it was tough getting them down.. but it definitely helped build my skills with lead on guitar. Now teaching 20+ years and this is a big part of why.. excellent bass player.. the Smiths were lucky to have him.
Great bass player. One of the best of the 80s along with guys like Mick Karn and Derek Forbes. He should have got songwriting credit on a few songs I think. Particularly something like Rusholme Ruffians. He had the perfect balance between catchy and technical
