This man is the woodsman's lore incarnate - the skills, the craft, the spirit, the heart! Next weekend I'll be doing my first fly fishing this season. If I have half the blast D.C. is having in this video, then it'll already be the greatest time ever.
I knew I subscribed for a reason.....I LOVE FISHING !!! I also love your other videos too ! This is stuff that will save peoples lives when things go wrong. Thank You !!
Again Dave brings back memories. Never really thought about it until now but back then catching all the little fish was more fun than catching the bigger fish now. Thank you for all of your videos and time you put into them. I do have a question though. I am going to make my own tarp so I can set it up the way I want. My question is what material would you use? I have thought about either canvas, silnylon, maybe even waterproof cordura.
Dave enjoyed your video on the 18th Century Style of fishing, I didn't know in the late 50's & 60's that's how they fished, but that is exactly how My grandparents fished. They taught me how to fish when I was a kid. The bait they would use was big old earthworms that they dug up from the cow pen. Caught every kind of fish there was, in later years I give up on worms after those pesty perch & turtles as they had a never ending fondness for worms. I changed to flies. Great times then.
Dave I have a book that may come in handy for some of those beginning knot tiers. I have a book from back when I was in boy scouts called, "knots and how to tie them." It describes rope development, Making rope, whipping, caring for rope, end knots, knots for joining, tying ropes to objects, knots for loops, other useful knots, splicing, and lashings. I know it has helped me out greatly and thought it may help out other viewers.
Last year in Wally world found bamboo in the garden section, used it to make butter fly nets and spliced some for some cane poles, little one had a ball with them!
i love fly fishing and also picked up tenkara which is pretty much what your doing. i keep a furled leader in my survival kit cause i know if i tie it to the end of a stick it is highly effective. tight lines
That pond seems to have a LOT of fairly small fish. My college Fisheries Management instructor said the way to get bigger fish in a small pond is to fish the hell out of it and not toss the little ones back. They are probably overpopulated. You can put the tiny ones on your garden for fertilizer and eat the bigger ones. You will never fish it out with rod and reel. There will be more food for the remaining fish, and they will get bigger. It looks like you're having a lot of fun! Great video!
Here in Minnesota we still have have over 30 inches of ice on the lakes and its a blizzard out. I wish i could be out fishing in a t-shirt right now. Really enjoy your videos Dave. I check for new ones everyday!
i was doing the same thing only with the black widow pole and ended up catching about a 12 inch bass. was definitely a fun fight and i enjoyed it a lot more than using my bait caster, your channel has shown me so many different things and i thank you for that! keep up the good work!
Ha, it's hilarious listening to Dave laugh like a little kid when a fish flops onto the bank. If anything it shows you love what you do, and we love it too. Keep the videos coming brother.
Dave, if you can find the right time when the Bluegills are spawning, and use that same little tiny top water popper you will just kill the great big "gills" I use my flyrod each year doing that and fill the freezer!
There's no doubt the pond is stockpiled with fish and it stunted the growth. But that being said there's a ton of fish to be had!! That's a great spot to take Layla bug to :-) she would have a blast catching all those pan fish! It's great to see u so excited about fishing Dave!!
We use #36 tarred bank line for trot lines. Have found just 4 hooks over night makes for a good catfish fry... unless a snapping turtle happens to take the bait. Then it gets interesting.
Dang it Dave, I'm not off till Sunday and these videos are killing me. I can't wait to get out on the waters edge. Night fishing hasn't been too good down here in Florida this week, but I did catch my first fresh water eel.
Kind of off topic, but that wouldn't be a Bankline Bracelet, would it? If it isn't, I'm sure it's only a matter of time before someone comes up with one (if they haven't already). Have a bunch of dried bamboo in the back. Seems ,like I'll have another project for it. Thanks Dave.
Hej Dave, We hardly use fly fishing where i am from. Never did like the fly fishing rods, but this looks like great fun! No mus No Fus Getting searching for bait. Could you do a video on the details on fly fishing, with the fly's in particlair. Love the videos.
Would you recommend a pen rod and real for a small fishing kit? Because I was looking them up but I was wondering if you could do a review on them. Thanks
if people are planning on pole fishing, they should have two of them, one like yours at 12+ feet and one at your height, 5-6 feet, ect. this allows you to select a pole for a need. if you're creek fishing, use the short pole, if pod or lake fishing, use the long pole. having a extendable purpose made pole like your B&M black widow would also suffice.
Mono is good for things that float. If you're going underwater/sinking Fluorocarbon is the bomb- fish can't see it even in gin clear water. We have several reservoirs here in San Diego where you can see 30+ feet and fluoro is just about the only way to get 'em. Wish we could go Bass fishin' when I come out next week for Advanced Class! (hint, hint)
Your college instructor was dead right. Glad to hear that's being taught, don't forget it!! Catch and release is drastically reducing the size of fish in fisheries around where I live.
I experienced the same thing years ago. Small pond where they were stunted and overpopulated. Fish would hit anything, even a bare hook. Didn't even really need a pole. We nearly filled up a small boat, then dumped them on land for the critters in hoping to restore the ecosystem. Too small to clean and eat. Whoever owned it put the word out they wanted people to come and reduce the population.
some people have all the luck. whenever i try to fosh, the fish seem to already know that i am at the other end. it's like there's a curse on me or something. i AM determined to catch at least one fish in the remainder of my lifetime.
Thanks for the fishing videos. I am watching them all, helps pass the time watching them at the hospital with my dad.

Its crazy how much fishing has change since the 18th century.just goes to show you can always feed yourself with the basics..Great video!
Your laughter and smile is infectious Dave good to see your having a good time
It's great to see you smile enjoying what you really love. Thanks for the upload.
I knew I subscribed for a reason.....I LOVE FISHING !!! I also love your other videos too ! This is stuff that will save peoples lives when things go wrong. Thank You !!
Thanks Dave, really enjoy your videos!
Looks like you have a new favourite fishing spot
Again Dave brings back memories. Never really thought about it until now but back then catching all the little fish was more fun than catching the bigger fish now. You look like you really had fun , I get the same buzz . Thanks Dave .

Great vid, love the common man approach to everything.
Thanks Dave, really enjoy your videos! What type of fly's did you use?
Awesome Dave, you love fishing almost as much as I do !
That pond seems to have a LOT of fairly small fish. I love Dave's expressions and exclamations!
Have you tried a small piece of paracord for a fly? It slays fish 👍
Here in Minnesota we still have have over 30 inches of ice on the lakes and its a blizzard out. I wish i could be out fishing in a t-shirt right now. Really enjoy your videos Dave. I check for new ones everyday!
alota fun little fish around there dave. a great area to bring the young ones
Great video! Do you have a video on making the flies? Thanks.
Boy, You had a great time today. I'm gonna try that 18th Century style..
I'm on the lookout for the right piece of willow or river cane right now,
i was doing the same thing only with the black widow pole and ended up catching about a 12 inch bass. was definitely a fun fight and i enjoyed it a lot more than using my bait caster, your channel has shown me so many different things and i thank you for that! keep up the good work!
Brother you sure are making me want to go fishing!!
Ha, it's hilarious listening to Dave laugh like a little kid when a fish flops onto the bank. If anything it shows you love what you do, and we love it too. Keep the videos coming brother.
Love these kind of videos
WOW, reminded me of fishing as a kid. That's the way my dad taught me, with a cane pole
I miss fishing so much, Southern CA doesn't have many good fresh water fishing spots. Thanks for the video, looked like you had a blast.
About time u actually took some time to relax . Take care of self Dave
It about time I get out there and start fishing.
As always, lovin' the videos. Wouldn't mind a how-to on your line setup to go with the cane pole setup video. God bless.
Looks like you were having fun there! Its kinda cool how a good fishing hole can turn a guy into a kid again.
awesome, you look like your having a blast

GREAT VIDEO DAVE AM LOVING IT
brilliant, you just got me interested in fishing!
great video mate! fly fishing is a very good skill for survival. everyone should have a bit of fishing equipment in their outdoor pocket just in case
Dave,
Thanks for posting. Can you do some more creek side fly tying videos? I sure enjoy your videos, thanks again!
Mark
We use #36 tarred bank line for trot lines. Have found just 4 hooks over night makes for a good catfish fry... unless a snapping turtle happens to take the bait. Then it gets interesting.
you can also transplant a dozen Monster bass into the lake. they will be well fed for sure.
Dude!! Green with envy!! What a great time!!
Dang it Dave, I'm not off till Sunday and these videos are killing me. I can't wait to get out on the waters edge. Night fishing hasn't been too good down here in Florida this week, but I did catch my first fresh water eel.

Best series ever! I love fishing too but I fish carps or trouts :)

This would have fed you in a self reliant situation for sure:) Good stuff. Regards, Lars

As they say here in Georgia "You caught you a mess o fish" This video has made me decide to make some cane poles with my neighborhood scouts.
Very cool. Good catch.
Would you recommend a pen rod and real for a small fishing kit? Because I was looking them up but I was wondering if you could do a review on them. Thanks
We have been fishin like that for years and years here.Still make my own cane poles, just like my Grandfather taught me.
You might be surprised where you can get bamboo to grow, it's almost invasive and grows easily in even temperate climates.
Hey Dave what kind of fire steel is that round your neck youve been wearing lately?
Love the series, keep it up, Dave.
Dave, could you do something with primitive bow fishing?
if people are planning on pole fishing, they should have two of them, one like yours at 12+ feet and one at your height, 5-6 feet, ect. this allows you to select a pole for a need. if you're creek fishing, use the short pole, if pod or lake fishing, use the long pole. having a extendable purpose made pole like your B&M black widow would also suffice.
Dave I'd like to see a video about bank line and jug line fishing for catfish and turtles. All your vids are great! Thanks brother!

It will work in a stream too. I had me a willow stick set up the same way at my mine shack and it did not get "borrowed" when I was not there.
how long is the main fly line? and how long is the leader line?
I think I need to upgrade my fishing kit..
Looks like fun
Thanks for the video =D
You ever catch bass or trout?
Your college instructor was dead right. Glad to hear that's being taught, don't forget it!! Catch and release is drastically reducing the size of fish in fisheries around where I live.
Haha, it's a bobber in the south :) Nice Dave!
Outstanding
what kind of hat is that I have seen it in the last couple videos
HEY DAVE,,,I MAY NOT COMMENT ALL THE TIME,,BUT WHEN I WATCH YOUR VIDEOS,,,I FEEL LIKE YOUR SHOW IS CALLED " KICKING IT WITH DAVE " THX MY FRIEND,,,,

Nothing like cane pole fishin
I can tell that fishing is one of your favorite things to do. I like hearing you laugh bro. Good times.
CAN TELL YOU LOVE TO FISH, WE DO TOO!
looks like alot of fun.. should of brought the grandkids
I've never heard it called a strike indicator. we always just called it a cork. rarely even bobber. colloquialisms are interesting.
nice fishing Dave have fun hehehe
You get me everytime with that beard.
Now if you can just flick them up onto the bank and get them to land in a basket. Ha! Looks like fun brother!
Well they sure aren't big ones, but the plate would be full!
I experienced the same thing years ago. Small pond where they were stunted and overpopulated. Fish would hit anything, even a bare hook. Didn't even really need a pole. Haha hes so happy to fish .. But I would be too if I was catching a fish every second..
good times
some people have all the luck. whenever i try to fosh, the fish seem to already know that i am at the other end. it's like there's a curse on me or something. i AM determined to catch at least one fish in the remainder of my lifetime.
I second that primitive bowfishing would be awsome:)
I love your laugh. Like a kid in a candy store. lol
I used to fish like that all the time, back in russia:)
Only i think that its is too rough pulling?
You're having too much fun.
well, i don't know... a barrel of monkeys are a lot of fun... ;)
