Repairing WORN OUT Planetary Carrier for Cat 740 Truck | Making Custom Boring Bar

  • Опубликовано: 28 мар 2024
  • We're tackling a worn-out planetary carrier from a Caterpillar 740 Articulated haul truck's diff final drive. The challenge? The damaged gear thrust faces are located within a hard-to-reach location on the carrier housing, making them difficult to repair with conventional tools. So that means we need to make a custom boring bar specifically designed to access those tricky areas with our milling and facing head. In this video, we'll walk you through the entire process, from machining the boring bar on the lathe to the precise milling work required on the planetary carrier itself!
In this video we are using:
    - Hafco TM-1740G Centre Lathe
    - Hafco BM-63VE Milling machine

Greetings from Boise, Idaho! The "Michelangelo of Machinists" has done it again! Don't have the right tool? Simple. Just make one! See the finished product and remove what doesn't belong! Simple! Karen, I marvel at your video skills. Your close-up work is remarkable. My only worry is getting cooling fluid or swarf all over your lenses! (Or has the Safety Officer made sure that your cameras have safety glasses?) Keep up the great work, you three! Thank you!

Always love some close-up machining action - and credit for the efforts and edited results of the close-ups, slow-motion swarf etc... The focus work and framing, as well as the audio, is simply superb... This channel takes me back to high school and my first experiences of turning and metal work... wish I had stayed in that trade, my Uncle offered me the chance to build dragster parts as he did for some of the top teams back in the day... really wish I had taken him up on that...

There is more than one heavy equipment mechanic that owes his job to Kurtis and CEE; your tool making is next level, especially fixing an impossible to repair part. The giant fixture-blocks for mill are cool and your eye-precision / hand work required setting the angle for the insert tooling that sits inside the bar. BTW great finish on the bar, and thanks mentioning the insert. Karen, excellent work. Your split screen edits and interior color grading / exposures are wonderful. Two camera shots using timecode? Your precision is awesome!
The hand crank movement lathe drilling was a great idea - Including the spindle slow-down and stop on both splits, no less - are great. The time-lapse dissolve of the finished part at the job's end was really cool. Nice to see footage of Homey and the George the Butcherbird. (in the past - not this video) It would be cool if you had a polarizing filter or second camera set for exterior shots. Its difficult when your pressed for time an running in and out, easy for overexposure, cursing the light and fighting it later. Interesting, your both precise in your own right - yet expressed in different ways.
Filming must stressful. His lines, problems with setups camera angles and exposures eat at equipment deadlines - yet it's your wonderful relationship, the love, giggling and laughter which makes the outtakes and channel great to watch - fantastic job as ever CEE!!!

Hello CEE team, greetings from Belgium. Nice work on the planetary carrier, another job well done and an additional tool in the toolbox, a machine-shop without any side projects for getting the job done isn’t a real machine shop.
    Have a great weekend.

As I watch each video my future tool list keeps growing as well. Cheers from Minnesota, USA!

I spent the first 20 minutes of this video thinking I can see what he is making as a tool holder, but how is the insert going to pass over the face of the work? And now I know. It just reinforces my experiences of working with engineers throughout my career that an engineer’s mind works differently to other professionals, or mere mortals. To be admired. Great content.

A very good example of showing a customer what's involved plus making special tools plus the knowledge to get the job done....people say mechanics are a rip off but there aren't to many old mechanics out there because we end up like me with and toxic overload of petro chemical and chemical exposure so it slowly takes our lives but yeah we're a rip off
