  • At least 79 people have died and more than 100 have been rescued after their fishing boat sank off southern Greece.
But survivors have suggested as many as 750 people may have been packed on to the boat, with reports of 100 children in the hold.
Greece says it is one of its biggest ever migrant tragedies, and has declared three days of mourning.

@@Just_another_Euro_dude There is a minor matter of the temperature of the water. The warm early Summer temperature of the Eastern Med is a quite different beast to the iceberg strewn North Atlantic in Winter. The big problem here is that 95% of them don't (didn't) know how to swim or couldn't because they were locked below. Even flailing around in the water for 20 minutes with lungs half full of water in the end meant rescue for some of them. For those on the Titanic, swimmers or not, if you didn't get into a lifeboat within a couple of minutes, hypothermia got you.

I should be emphasized that the boat and the people inside isank in international water.
The question is why the BBC and other major EU media are implying that it was the responsibility of Greece for not checking the boat etc, Instead of praising the people of Greece for their immense rescuing efforts they are misleading people to believe that the accident happened inside Greek waters, despite the fact that the sunken boat and people have no connection to Greece, and the sinking happened in international water. Yes, they signed a death wather but that doesn't make them no longer a victim. Also most of these people are not on by choice, because they are fleeing persecution so would have died if they didn't. Starvation is also a factor. These people didn't want to risk there lives on this boat, they are victims of the horrific circumstances they were put in by the same countries they are fleeing to.

There is in Libya, but thjis is what TUI are saying about Tunisia 2023/2024,
Ancient cities, forgotten villages, deserts and beaches - Tunisia holidays serve up sunbathing hotspots with a side order of history.
      Markets, medinas and mosques
Shopaholics will be in their element on a holiday to Tunisia. Seek out authentic bargains and gifts while practising your haggling skills in the markets and souks - many of which can be found in the maze-like medina quarters of Tunisia’s towns and villages. Meanwhile, ornate mosques provide historic sightseeing opportunities.
      Saharan sands
The closeness of the Sahara means desert safaris are easy to come by. Hop in a 4x4 and you can hurtle across the dunes, exploring a landscape that’s remained unchanged for centuries. Alternatively, go horse riding, stopping at an authentic Bedouin camp for mint tea along the way.

Greek Coast Guards are always ready to help & rescue anyone in distress but when the Captain of the Boat refused help offered to him by the Greek Coast Guards then it is not possible to provide help. In some cases, International Organisations/Agencies are involved in Human Trafficking because of the huge profits they make from human suffering. There was some of them in Greece few years ago and the previous government closed their offices and asked them to leave the country. The Greek Prosecutor ordered an investigation into this matter and the results of this investigation will be published. In the meantime, all communications are recorded through the Black-boxes installed in Coast Guard Boats and Greek Ports. Unfortunately, as a result of the agreement signed on March 18, 2016, our country is already stopping the overwhelming majority of migration flows to the west, we want this agreement to be cancelled. Sooner or later the government will change and our country's role as a refugee camp for the EU will come to an end. Also, Libya is good for them if they are in the interests of their own citizens and refuse to make their country a buffer zone for refugees. Also, we are used to economic difficulties and no state can force us to do anything with sanctions. Better to starve than dishonor.

Who are they trying to hold to account for this. Blame falls completely on these people. They should not be trying to enter other countries illegally.

But if the Greek police didn't forcefully stop them from committing these crimes, then the criminals won't have to resort to such dangerous methods. The Greeks **choose** to enforce the law

They could rescue them n then to show their law enforcement could later on deport them but they didn't dared to save so many lives .

this report is clear as mud. Were they Greek people going to Italy? No. It was African people trying to illegally immigrate to Europe. It also sank in international waters and isn't really Greece's responsibility at all. They just so happened to put in the rescue effort. Why are they being made to look bad? They were the heroes, if anything. Be clearer in your reporting, BBC. I am not a journalist but I could have done a much better job putting this report together that would be clearer with the facts. Why are the nations from which these immigrants come-- what with their brutal regimes that cause these immigrant crises to begin with-- never shown in these reports? Instead you bizarrely portray Greece in a negative light. Just a poor approach to reporting altogether. Seemingly nefarious in your purposes.

@BBC you think a boat of that size would carry 700 life vests? Infact you honestly report that that boat can safely carry that amount of passengers?

But the BBC and European media will never blame the govts of the migrant countries but it is always our fault. If those parents had any sense why would they allow 100 children on to a boat which sets off after midnight to escape surveillance
