  • In this video I'm going to show you several things. First, how to install a damper into your wood burning cast iron colorado cylinder stove. It's a 5 inch damper I install. Next, I show you how to put on the rain cap, but I will not be using it again as it caused embers to fall direclty onto the tent roof (fortunately none burned through). I'll show you how a mr. buddy heater compared to the colorado cylinder stove. I show you a quick review on the envirolog and why I won't be using that again in the stove at least (great for fire pits outdoors). Lastly, I show you how to clean the stove for the first time. It's all quite simple and I hope it's helpful to you. If there's anything in these demos you want to see please speak up by commenting below.
Note: the version is the video is the first edition of this 6170 model. There have been several improvements. Kodiak makes improvements based on customer experience, warranty claims, and engineering recommendations. These include a stronger reinforced upright pole with the joint reinforced, and stainless steel rings vs brass grommets for the pole and guy rope attachment points.

The damper is used to help control the fire burn , open it up and the door damper to have hot fie or to get the wood burning when filling stove then when going good shut both down to let fie burn on a slow burn doesn’t stop the fire foam burning just slow burn and good slow heat ….. been hunting in wall tent for 50 some years .

Lyle, I just took this tent and stove out for our inaugural first camping trip. If I close both dampers all the way will I still get a burn through the night? I found myself getting up a lot to fill the stove up in the middle of the night.

@@adamhilbert8730 yes that’s what you have to do , once you get a good fire going shut both dampers off will burn till wood is gone . If you get up to go to bathroom put some wood in, or if you feel cooling down . Try not spitting all wood if you have whole pices that will fit in use them as many as can get in , burn longer if you put as much as you can . Looking at you’re stove you should be able to put 5-6” maybe 7” in stove , you’ll have to try different sizes .to see what fits best and get lots in , split wood burns a lot faster and quicker .

Spark arrestor with rain cap is fine but not with a heater cap top style like you would see on a propane heater to push heat down. Ash comes out hits the cap and falls on the tent. With a rain cap spark arrestor that does have the heater cap the smoke just comes out as normal and away from the tent.

Do not use any paper product to start your fire. It will create a lot of embers that land on your tent. Use a fire starter liquid instead which will burn clean. We had to put a large flat piece of aluminum sheeting on our tent tied down with rope to protect it.

@@justins8768 Yeah a bit, nothing major. I can feel the condensation in the air when I breath especially with a Mr. Buddy. But I don't see anything beading up on the walls or ceiling. There is a clear difference with the dry heat though from a wood burning stove. I own and use both. I used a Mr. Buddy over the weekend on the Outer Banks and it worked well in the Kodiak screen house, but nothing is quite like a hot stove. I feel like the stove literally dries the tent on both the inside and outside. The Mr. Buddy heater adds heat, but doesn't have the BTU's like a wooden stove. You can get a million BTU's burning a cord of wood for a few hours depending on the tree. The standard size Mr. Buddy is about 10k maybe? There are some pros and cons to both. I'd say the biggest con on a wooden stove is the weight and the wood you need to keep it going. The Mr. Buddy requires you bring propane, but it's lighter weight, takes longer to heat up and isn't as efficient. Hope that helps.

get a proper rain cap for the pipe ... thats for a gas heater ... and useless on a wood stove ... the cap you need is a t cap with fine mesh screen . it will look like a tank gun with muzzle brake as for the fine mesh ... steel wool held in the cap with some mechanics wire ... it provides a cross flow of air drawing up the flu better ... and the damper adjusts the air flow slowing down or speeding up the fire ... (the heat is just a side effect a damper controls air flow) and for that stove a 4inch pipe is proper size .. 5 inc is over kill and will send more crud up the flu than the proper sized one ...

No you're right. I should have done a better job about that. Here's what I noticed with the Mr. Buddy heater - it did okay in temperatures around 40F. It couldn't heat it down to 1F though. It would bring the temperature up closer to 40F when running on high. Could you get by with a Mr. Buddy, sure! Some campsites won't allow stoves and there are burning restrictions in certain times of the year, especially out West. There is a Mr. Buddy that has two elements and feeds in with two propane canisters. That one could keep up much better in this large tent. So, it definitely could work, but once you've fired up a wood burning heater you know you've got very comfortable heat relatively quickly and you don't have to battle the humidity/condensation that's a byproduct of propane. Thank you for bringing this up. I really think I'm going to do another video and compare them as the sole focus of the video.
