my dad have one Renault 5 gt turbo phase 2 stop for 20 years in the garage with only 52 000 km (32 311miles) is i think one with the lowest km/miles i would never sold the car is a piece of history
Miss my R5, great little fun cars. I found my phase 1 was more reliable than my phase 2 Raider. The common faults I had was wheel bearings, over hearing sitting in traffic (added a lower temperature thermostat and additional toggle switch to turn fan on manually) and throttle cable (I believe it was the same cable for the 11 and 19 so you had to cut it to size and crimp the end bit on). Oh another was exhaust gasket because some places sold the normal gasket for the turbo for some reason and not the reinforced gasket. I think another thing to look into if buying one is after market alarms, Many installers chopped into wires and never soldered them. And you're right about the rust but I've also found they can rust on top of the suspension struts. Another place is behind the plastic side skirts and arches where they hold water. I did see on Wheeler Dealers Elvis did an R5 and got the exhaust manifold ceramic coated to help keep the temperature down. I still kick myself for selling my Raider for £500 many years ago 🤦♂️
Thanks for the comments - yeah, everything you've mentioned there = pretty common faults, so no surprises. Esp the overheating risk in traffic, happened to one of my first cars too! Ouch, your raider would be worth a lot more than that now!
i removed the heater controls and moved them to where the stereo goes..and wacked in a kenwood flip out screen. excellent video..you got a new subscriber.. here..
I've owned a Tungy R5GTT since 1994, recently restored. Your comments on "originality" need explanation. To me, there is original versus building a replica. I joined, and soon left, a FB group simply because its members were turning ownership into a cheque-book sport. It was more about "I can brandish my PayPal harder than you!!" Talk about miss the point of the fun of ownership. To me, originality means "what's still on the car from when it left the factory?" So, when it comes to things like exhausts, a factory-fitted original lasted between 24 and 36 months, depending on what part of the country you lived in. When it came to replacing mine, I went for a full stainless-steel run. My mild steel one had totally disintegrated. My build was with a bespoke back-box with a non-penile-extension diameter pipe out the back. Going to a place where the exhaust can be built for you in stainless will cost the same as a mild-steel "original", or replica. The latter is nothing but a R5GTT Tax rip-off! There's plenty more of those! Experience tells me to avoid replacement parts with "uprated" claims - invariably they aren't and fail almost on fitting. The vacuum technology for the door-cards no longer exists. Unless you have a museum piece, it's no good paying out all kinds of dosh on replacements as the failure point is the cloth to card bonding glue. My car has its original cards, the driver's door one has been strengthened, but then properly dressed in heron-grey leather. So like the body, it's the factory originals, but recovered. The result is sculpting and stitching that are works of art which won't ever need to be re-done. There is a small "trick" by which you can achieve a huge step forward in the "quality" feel of the bodywork. Some judicious placements of sound deadening will make all the difference. The method is to overlap two sheets, by two inches or more, as close to the centre of each panel as you can. For example inside each door create an H on its side with the crossbar overlapping each upright. Avoid the "wallpapering" you often see at all costs! You'll simply create a very low frequency drum. Once the deadening is fitted, replace the standard speakers with some of good quality. The clarity of sound will amaze! It'll make you wonder why anyone needed to overload the alternator with a sub. The doors close with a very satisfying thud too. One other thing - every single motor on the R5 has to be replaced in their entirety. There's no 50p pack of brushes for anything! So, make enquiries about any recent, or more to the point, try and establish any non-recent replacements. The cooling fan and anti-perc fan being cases in point. Checking the heater/demister controls is wise too, because replacement parts are a dashboard-out jobbie. My resto can be followed here... ruclips.net/p/PLQkJvXd3OfzQ9UW9S_rakDZDzhX2In2QZ
Love your passion for the car. Classics are quite fun, but clearly, this is a very special car for you, brilliant. Personally, I love the Lancia Delta in this category, but as funmobiles go, this must qualify as one of the best frenchies you can get!
I had a pearl white one and wished I had kept it. Someone kicked in the paper thin door skin and the respray was not perfect. Clutch cable snapped twice on me once on the North Circular in rush hour whilst on holiday.
@@TABonTV The only thing that impressed me with Renault the company was that after that had stopped making all the 5's with the exception of the base model they did a recall to fix the clutch issue. I am sure most manufacturers would not have bothered. Every time I put it in for a service it was a surprise as to what other issues they had found. I had a few £600 service bills.
@@TABonTV Interesting fact I was told by a Renault employee. The Turbo had a 1.4ltr engine but they also had a GTX or GTL non turbo car with a 1.7ltr engine. When they were developing the 5 turbo they tried the 1.7ltr engine with a turbo attached. After taking it on track they found that the chassis had twisted with the power so downgraded the engine to the 1.4ltr.
Great video! What a car! What would you say are some modifications or upgrades that can or should be made to improve reliability and maybe adding a little more power (20hp), while not modifying the car permanently? My Renault 5 GT is n good shape and stock? Thanks in advance!
had a tungsten grey one e595 xvu bitd. i believe colour wise you missed canary yellow or maybe that was a spanish colour as i saw plenty at the time there
I still have the brochures for Ph1 and Ph2. My Dad had a couple of TCs and a few of the very late 1390cc campus models. My first car was a 5 TL. Sadly we've never had a GT Turbo or any of the 1721cc models. With prices as they are now it's unlikely that I'll ever be able to have a GT Turbo which was the first childhood dream car after seeing a white ph2 in the showroom in the late 80's. My generation destroyed these in the max power era . I'd love another R5 and an origional.factoey spec GT Turbo, GTX or Monaco would be the perfection. Oh by the way the head gasket failed on my 1108cc TL when I owned one in 1999.
Yeah - that's the thing! We're in a funny situation now. People used to take a standard car and then do everything possible to make it non standard & tweak it up! No you have people getting hold of tweaked ones and doing the reverse to take them back to normal!

Thanks for the sub! Sounds like you got pretty busy customizing yours!
Did that 23 years ago and fitted my alpine unit it 👍🏽
Good detailed video mate!! Think it'll help a lot of people looking to get into one
Cheers! The 9 people currently trying to get one! 😂
Best case ever. Got a dimma gt, phase1 gt, monaco, phase 2 gt and a van with gt turbo engine in it.
That's quite the collection! Great taste! 👏🏻

Big fan of the integrale myself, but it's another level up in terms of price and performance. Only LHD too!
@@TABonTV love the intergrale and Uno turbo mk1 but have a Renault 5 gt turbo myself 😍

Clutch cable is a common problem on RHD. It's because these models are rerouted from LHD and the resulting cable run is much longer!

Honestly I think maintaining a standard power car is the way to go with these nowadays. They're in the retirement years 😆
